Artistic director of the theater modern. "Modern" (theater): repertoire, troupe, director, history

24.06.2019

Grymov, who has proven himself more than once as a theater director (productions at the RAMT and so on), speaking of an “unexpected appointment for himself”, no, no, and jumped to the sore subject of Russian cinema, in which he is now “completely disappointed”:

Our cinema as an industry has disappeared, but the theater, thanks to enthusiasts, has retained its face. Theater is the most provocative, lively art, which cannot be said about domestic cinema, which has lost its audience, and nothing good will happen to it in the next five years. And it’s not without reason that we first of all organize a children’s studio at Modern - we will educate not artists or directors, but future viewers, so that it doesn’t turn out like with the audience of cinemas, which comes to the hall only to eat (popcorn, - I'M WITH.), and what looks at the same time - but anyway ...

Grymov has been appointed for only a month, but managed to get acquainted with the administration and the production part (“they are good professionals”), and also fired four artists out of 35 due to their “disbandment”.

I'm sorry that the actors of "Modern" are people unknown to the media, - the new artistic director condoles, - in my opinion, an actor should work everywhere - in the theater, in the cinema, in serials, he becomes trained. Therefore, there can be no slavery or serfdom on my part: work in different places, become famous.

In Grymov’s project, to turn Modern into a kind of open area free for other actors and directors: in particular, guest stars Anna Kamenkova and Igor Yatsko ( the latter will play in the subsequent work of "Modern").

I absolutely will not tolerate the actors doing nothing, and at the same time receiving a meager salary, - Grymov said, - we calculated here - if we don’t put anything at all, then we will be in the red by 12 million rubles! Moreover, after the scandal with Vragova, 10% of our funding was withdrawn from us. So they have to work very hard and normally get paid for it. Let's say in "Brave New World" the whole troupe is involved - under 30 people.

It is clear that a few enemy performances will remain in the repertoire of "Modern", now without a solid sign at the end (the successful and visited "Loop" will be transferred from the hall for 70 to the hall for 300 seats):

I live in the territory of common sense: the viewer does not walk - you have to shoot!

“It seems that they pumped out oxygen there,” nothing has happened for the last 15 years: Grymov was extremely surprised that the main hall was white - no blackouts for you, nothing ... Now both the hall and the lobby are being repainted. Purchased new lighting and sound equipment. The stage is being reconstructed. A special place is given to the buffet: Grymov is annoyed when during the intermission everyone crowds into a queue, then they grab a sandwich and run back into the hall. Now it will be possible to order a mini-lunch (lunch) on the website in advance, and forget about the queues.

In general, I must say that the theater now begins with the site. There is the first meeting. Therefore, we pay such attention to our electronic platform: for example, we will post interviews with various theater figures on topical topics (Grymov hopes to get the first of them from the brilliant director of the Vakhtangov Theater, Kirill Krok, - I'M WITH.), open a channel on YouTube.

By the way, Grymov plans to expand the main hall to 400 seats after negotiations with firefighters. In total, he promises to release 3 adults and one children's performance in the foreseeable future, and he will stage two himself, “to create a vector and style”, and will actively invite directors (open competitions are organized for them): “otherwise today no one is looking for talented strange people, but they do exist!

What is theater? - The artistic director summarizes. - This is not a building (do not tie it to architecture) and not budgets. Theater is people. Theater is always a statement. Well, one theater should not be similar to another. Our new "Modern" is a theater of hope and light, a person in the hall can experience all sorts of emotions, but you never need to "finish" him!

An architectural masterpiece in the neoclassical style has retained all the highlights of the interior decoration of the beginning of the last century. The mansion on Spartakovskaya in Moscow has a Parquet and Marble halls, two spacious and bright foyers, and a living room. The auditorium has a capacity of 355 seats.

The ergonomic arrangement of the seats allows you to see everything that happens on the stage from any point in the hall. The stage is equipped with professional technical sound and lighting devices. In the repertoire and on the posters of "Modern" you can find performances for every taste. The theater also has a children's theater studio.

In order to ensure maximum comfort for all guests, the organizers ask you to refrain from sportswear, shorts, T-shirts and T-shirts. The minimum dress code for visiting the theater is smart casual, which allows casual jeans, dresses and informal suits.

The Council of Artistic Directors of Moscow theaters supported the candidacy of film director Yuri Grymov, nominated for the post of artistic director of the Modern Theater. The Izvestia correspondent met with the new theater director.

- For many, it was a surprise that you, a film director, decided to head the theater ...

It was a conscious choice, I knew what I was doing. I have an old love for the theatre. And over the years, it only gets worse. “Flowers for Algernon”, my production at RAMT, has been sold out for the fourth year. Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride, which I staged in 2005, has been performed at the Novaya Opera for more than 10 years.

I personally do not like what has been happening in the domestic cinema in the last decade. If the Russian theater has preserved the traditions of continuity and the state policy towards the theater is quite wise, then this is practically not the case in Russian cinema. There, films that are similar in aesthetics to American ones have relative success. I'm not interested, because I love Soviet cinema.

- At the artistic council you presented the theater development program. What is it?

We have a lot of hard work ahead of us. There are 12 plays that I would be interested in directing. The very name of the theater - "Modern" - says that this is modernity. And then the art style. It is important to bring the concept of "modernity" into the theater. Let our site serve as a springboard for the debut works of young and talented people.

For me, in general, a team of bright personalities is fundamental. This applies to both the actors and the staged part. In the cinema, they have recently stopped looking for bright unexpected people. I would like to eliminate this omission in the theater so that young people have the opportunity to express themselves. But, of course, I will put something myself.

- Have you already met with the Moderna troupe?

No, I have plans to do it after the New Year. It just all happened unexpectedly. Of course, the appointment of me to such a position is pleasant and responsible. Many thanks to the Union of Artistic Directors, Chairman of the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation Alexander Kalyagin for the trust. I'll try to justify it.

- Often, the arrival of a new artistic director is accompanied by scandals. Aren't you afraid that the actors will meet you with hostility?

I am a non-confrontational person. For me, dialogue is the key to everything. I would like to be heard. We must not forget that the theater is a large number of people. We must become a team and move towards creation.

- How do you imagine your theater?

This is a theater of living emotions. There should be laughter and tears in the hall. I think that it is necessary to cry in the theater, and not in life. When people cry at your performance, it is a great happiness. Fortunately, today a person goes to the theater to look at his own kind. Other people are already coming to the cinema - chewing, making phone calls. So in that regard, I'm a big fan of the theatre.

Today I see many good performances at the Vakhtangov Theatre, the Yermolova Theatre, Et. Cetera and others. And you know, I am proud that I had a warm relationship with Pyotr Fomenko (creator of the P. Fomenko Workshop. - Izvestia). As life has shown, half of the actors with whom I worked in the cinema are his students.

- The work of the artistic director will take a lot of time, but what about the cinema?

I'm ready to shift the focus ... There can be no excuse - they say, I'm completely busy with cinema and there is no time for the theater. I'm interested in making a theater with a good reputation. So all the energy and time - on him, and 1% - on his personal life.

Sergey Bezrukov, having become the artistic director of the theater, actively promotes his artists in the cinema. Do you share this position?

It seems to me that today the return of good domestic cinema is, first of all, the creation of acting cinema. And where can an artist get knowledge about his profession today? Only in the theatre. It's always been that way, it's a must. Yes, a good actor should be in demand both in the theater and in the cinema. And my task as an artistic director is to make the artists become famous, and most importantly, receive adequate money.

In the summer you shot a film based on Chekhov's play "Three Sisters". There is a wonderful acting ensemble of theatrical artists ...

Yes, these are Maxim Sukhanov, Igor Yasulovich, Alexander Baluev, Irina Mazurkevich, Anna Kamenkova and others. People with a capital letter. And we find a common language. So I do not understand how you can conflict with the artists. They are the ones to take the stage. I can tell my story only through talented people - actors and playwrights. And all these conflicts are nonsense. And so we have a lot of hard things in life. I think that strife in the creative environment is a crime.

- When can we expect the film to be released?

In April, my film “Anna Karenina. Intimate Diary. Three Sisters is scheduled for October. First a film version, and then a four-episode project for television. The Three Sisters will not have a blockbuster release. We, unfortunately, live in the realities of American cinema. And Chekhov does not fit into these realities.

I always try to do what I like. For example, he tried to tell the famous play by Anton Pavlovich from a different angle. If his heroines are 20–25 years old, then mine is 55–60. This is a completely different level of relationship.

And yet, Chekhov's appearance on the big screens is a step forward. Usually only commercial projects are presented in cinemas.

Today I do not pin any hopes on producer cinema, it has discredited itself. The commercial component of cinema is an important focus, but let's count by a column how much money was spent on production, including state funds, and how much was collected at the box office? The difference is colossal.

It is impossible to make a movie for the sake of profit, and even in such a way as to deprive the director of the right to speak out. If it is not there initially, then I see no reason to shoot. I have no complexes: few spectators will come to the "Three Sisters" or a lot. I am proud that I have my own thinking audience. I am for cinema, where the actor is the person through whom I tell the story.

Artistic director

The theater was created by Svetlana Alexandrovna Vragova - People's Artist of Russia. Her first directorial work was the play "Spring Changelings" in the Theater for Young People in the city of Kirov. Then Svetlana was still a student, but her work was already distinguished by a high level of professionalism and originality. After graduating from the institute, S. Vragova worked as a director at the Moscow Drama Theater named after A. S. Pushkin. Her most famous production of that period is The Fifth Ten. The next stage of the creative path was the work of a director at the Moscow New Drama Theater. In 1981, Svetlana created the studio "On Spartakovskaya". She accepted graduates of the famous "Sliver" into the troupe. The first performance of the studio was the play "Dear Elena Sergeevna". The troupe took this production on tour in the United States. In 1995, the studio was transformed into the Moscow Drama Theater "Modern". With the new status, the repertoire expanded. The performances of the theater demonstrate a special view of the world, a refined style and artistic novelty.

Where is it located and how to get there

At the address: house 9/1a, the theater "Modern" is located. How to get to the drama of Svetlana Vragova? The best way to get to the theater is by metro. Get off at the Baumanskaya station. From it to the theater you will need to walk only four hundred meters on foot. You can get off at the station "Rizhskaya". It is also convenient to get to the theater by bus number 778. You will need to get off at the stop "Spartakovskaya Square".

Theater "Modern" under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Svetlana Vragova (formerly the Theater on Spartakovskaya Square) has been on the cultural map of the capital for 15 years. The theater was formed in 1988 on the basis of the graduation course of the Shchepkinsky Theater School (this was the last course led by the People's Artist of the USSR M.I. Tsarev), under the name of the Studio Theater on Spartakovskaya Square. Already the first performance of "Dear Elena Sergeevna" by Lyudmila Razumovskaya glorified the young troupe, which subsequently made a triumphal tour throughout Yugoslavia with this production (the Perestroika in the USSR festival, 1989), and then toured the United States for several months (Los Angeles - Chicago, 1990). It was one of the first professional studio theaters that could not only prove their viability, but also declare their own creative credo. The performance "Dear Elena Sergeevna" became a hit for several seasons. Bright avant-garde performances "Rasplyuev's Happy Days" by Sukhovo-Kobylin, "Video. Boxing. Bullet" by E. Kozlovsky received prizes at prestigious competitions more than once. The performances "Let's Laugh!" and "...Looking for a meeting!" gained such success with the public that they remained in the repertoire for many years.
Since 1993, the Theater on Spartakovskaya has become the theater "Modern" and begins to develop the problems of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, associated with such an exceptional phenomenon in culture as the "modern" style. Svetlana Vragova's play "Katerina Ivanovna", staged in 1995, became a turning point for the theatre. He represented Russia at the jubilee Belgrade Theater Festival, where he was called by critics as a performance that forges new paths in art.
Theater "Modern" lovingly arranges its aesthetic space. It envelops those who have already come from the threshold, "calms down with the simplicity and completeness of the stairs, the modesty of the chandeliers and quickly turns us to the stained glass window leading to the Looking Glass, Stained Glass is a preface to action.
It represents the aristocratic beginning of the style, while the flights of stairs and its landings are its business incarnation. The theater, having changed the name of the theater-studio on Spartakovskaya Square to "Modern", can be said to have brought it into line with the building in which it is located - a mansion erected in the Russian modern style of the early 20th century. There are many such houses in Moscow, but this one has something exceptional in itself: in the midst of a district that is just beginning to revive, there is this fragment of a different, as it were, irrational world, a witness to Russia's pre-revolutionary past.
The full name - Theater "Modern" - clearly resonates not only with past times, but also with today's day. In theatrical art, director Svetlana Vragova was one of the first to understand this. The theater carefully probed the boundary between the end of the century and the next century, which in Russian art received the poetic name of the "Silver Age". Modern in the understanding of S.A. Vragovoy is an avant-garde with serious cultural traditions, a connection between modernity and classics.
Theater "Modern" exists according to these laws: relying on a serious psychological analysis, assimilating Russian traditions and modernity in order to search for new forms.
