Using curved lines when processing fur will help give it a 3D look. Using straight lines can flatten the fur, so be careful with that.

SHORT FUR

Here is an example of drawing short fur, which is ideal for all members of the canine family. Many animals have fur of a non-uniform color, each shred has differences in shade and color intensity.

1) Start by painting with the base color of the area where the fur will be. Try mixing several colors so you don't end up with too "flat" a shade.

2) Then use a brush with a diameter of 25 pixels to define the main direction of the fur in short, soft strokes.

3) Now you have to draw the differences in the color of the coat. Continuing to use the 25 px brush, select 1-2 colors for the fur - I chose one slightly darker than the main one, and the second one darker and less saturated (more grey). Here the fur is a little shorter on the left side and longer on the right side, so I added more dark strokes on the left side than on the right side, because the color usually changes with the length of the fur.

4) Now you can select a brush with a diameter of 5 pixels and a lightening shade, which should be slightly lighter than the main color. Now the hard work begins, as you will have to draw short little lines all over the surface, as if you were drawing each individual hair. It seems very tiring, but once your hand gets used to it, it will become a familiar movement for you. Just go over the entire surface, shorter strokes for short fur and longer strokes for long fur, respectively. Once you're done, your fur will already look good enough that you can stop at this point if you want, but if you want to add more depth you'll still have to work on the pattern.

5) Now you need to choose an even darker shade than the one you used before and a lighter one instead of the lighter one. Apply dark color in short strokes, apply it randomly - there is no specific formula for this stage, you just draw as you see fit. Use a lighter color to paint longer strokes and wiggle your pen a bit as you paint to make the tufts of fur more wavy.

6) The sixth stage is the final version. I just created a layer over the fur in the Overlay mode (Overlay) and using the Airbrush (Airbrush) added differences in color.
For the following examples, I will not describe step by step instructions as the process is the same.

LONG FUR

We will now move on to the basics of Longfur. It's very simple - for Short Fur we used short brush strokes, so for Long Fur, we'll use long strokes. Remember that most animals have different lengths and textures of fur on different parts of the body; Long fur drawing techniques are great for drawing the mane, tail and tufts. Try to combine them with the techniques shown above.

1) As with short fur, start by mixing colors to create a base color.

2) Using the Eyedropper, select the colors for the base and use these colors to show the main direction of the fur (brush with a diameter of 25 pixels). Use curves to show that the fur is uneven. Here I also added some shadows at the bottom so that the picture looks more round - always define the shadows before you start working on the fur.

3) Now it will be difficult to explain. Select a color darker than the base color and using a 25 px brush start adding darker color to the areas where the fur is coming off in tatters. This will be the area between the individual tufts of wool. At the base, use the Eyedropper to select the main color of the fur and draw protruding shreds.

4) Now using a brush with a diameter of 5 pixels, select a color lighter than the main one and draw individual strands. Start with short strokes for short fur and then gradually increase them. Paint within the patches you've traced, and try not to overdo the highlights on areas that are in shadow, as they don't reflect light.

5) Now select a color darker than your darkest color and lighter than your lightest. With a dark color, very softly apply fine hatching in the areas of the pattern between the tufts of wool. Use a light color to paint messy strokes! These are small strands that reflect light, and in order to make them more realistic, try to swing the pen from side to side while drawing, so that they turn out to be a little wavy and tousled.

6) The sixth step shows the final result, with improved color, which is the result of creating a layer in Overlap mode (Overlay). If you want to draw fluffy edges, use Eraser (Eraser) with a small diameter and go around the edges.

Basic lines sketch
Whether I use a reference or not, I always start with a sketch of the subject and the background (if any). I try to give a general outline of the form, the location of important details, such as eyes, nose, ears, legs, etc. and designation of the contours of the fur, its direction and texture. At this stage, I also try to imagine light-shadow transitions, although not very accurately. Many of these lines will change as the drawing continues.

Beginning of the first hatch layer
I always start with the subject's eyes and face, and if the drawing has more than one object on paper, then either the dominant or the most central object.
At this stage, it is very important for me to plan the direction of drawing so that later I don’t smear what has already been drawn with my hand. As it turns out, I can't hold my hand firmly unless it's in direct contact with the surface of the drawing, so I usually work in a circular pattern with the paper turning. On a small sheet like this one (5"x7") I worked from my head straight down and then to the right since I'm right handed.
First of all, I drew the eyes with all the details and the nose; both with a 5B pencil. Then I switched to a B pencil and applied a light basic shading to the muzzle. This hatching layer should be about as light as the lightest tones of the fur texture being painted. We look at the highlights and spots of fur, draw a shadow.
Make sure the pencil strokes are in the direction of the hair growth. These strokes tend to show through in the final image and also help define the overall texture of the coat. Stroke length is not important at this point, as long as that stroke layer remains uncovered in the final drawing.

Drawing the first layer
After the main hatching is applied, I continue to work with a 3B pencil. By pressing a little harder and using more precise fine strokes, I begin to create the texture of the fur. Try to keep the pencil as sharp as possible, and the length of the strokes would be approximately equivalent to what we see in the reference. At this stage, lay the hatching of the middle shadow. Darker areas will then be drawn on top of it.
At this stage, some of the shadow zones created in the first layer can still be modified. Here I decided that the ears looked a bit small, so I extended the shadowed areas and moved on to applying some details.

Second layer detail
After the hatching of the middle part is drawn, I switch to a 5B pencil. In larger areas, I will also use 4B, since I found that in small drawings, such detail is completely lost.
I carefully add a small amount of shadows to areas that look a little flat, but not necessarily dark. I did this at the top of the nose and around the eyes and muzzle. Each pencil hardness has a different tone, and even some slight addition can provide depth that can't be achieved with a single pencil.
As with the first detail layer, keep your pencil as sharp as possible, and limit the stroke length to what you see in the reference. Always apply strokes in the direction of fur growth.

Main shading of the next part
After shading the muzzle, I switched back to pencil B. Quite a lot of hair on the head, around the neck and on the front legs is a bright almost white color, so in these places, I use the same pencil as for the traced layer; the basis for hatching is the color of the paper. If, while adding strokes, I saw areas that did not need bright white, then I lightly rubbed the pencil strokes with my fingertips, thereby creating a very delicate, light creamy base.

Hatching Details
As before, I went over the main hatching 3B and 5B with pencils with detailing strokes. At this point, I switched from one to the other, moving around the entire area, adding more and more detail. Lined up the details, slowly making them darker and darker until they matched the reference.
In the area around the elbow, I made very short, contrasting dark strokes to give the impression that the fur is rather short and facing the viewer. A quick succession of compact, dark strokes is all it takes. In the case of cropped furs, I usually apply dark strokes immediately after the main hatching, and then complement with medium shades. The shading is so short that a lot of contrast is created here.
I paint over the paw pads with a 6B pencil to make them as dark as possible.

Next zones
Continuing to work in the same technique, I move on to detailing the torso. I also add basic shading to the hind legs and tail.

Last zone
Added medium shading of the hind legs and tail and dark touches of detailing on the rightmost part of the drawing.
