What does a3 size look like? Standard paper sizes for printing - it remains only to choose

22.09.2019

It is known that the dimensions of the sheet formats A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 according to A10 correspond to the approved Russian standard - GOST2.301-68.

At all plants in the Russian Federation, the main dimensions of paper sheets correspond to the values \u200b\u200bthat are presented in the table below.

Paper size Paper sizes in millimeters Sizes of formats in centimeters Format description
A0 sheet 841*1189mm 84.1 * 118.9 cm A sheet of this format has an area of 1 m². This is the largest format. The remaining dimensions are obtained by dividing the A0 format.
A1 sheet 594*841mm 59.4 * 84.1 cm The main scope of A1 sheets is professional design and layout. This format is often called drawing paper, paper sheet or simply paper. This format is obtained by dividing the A0 format in half.
A2 sheet 420*594mm 42*59.4cm The main scope of A2 sheets is the printing of banners, term papers and theses in a printing house, as well as traditional newspapers. This is half of A1 drawing paper cut across.
A3 sheet 297*420mm 29.7*42cm The main scope of the A3 sheet is student work. Sheets of this size are great for floristry, creating decorative panels, collages, paintings. This is the format of tabloid newspapers. In addition, a sheet of this size is the maximum used in consumer class copiers.
A4 sheet 210*297mm 21*29.7cm The main scope of A4 sheets is the use for children who begin to draw. Paper of this size is ideal for small sketches, as well as for printed products. The format is widely used in printing. This is the most common paper format, on which everything is usually printed and xerified.
A5 sheet 148*210mm 14.8*21cm The scope of A5 sheets is the printing of brochures, manuals of small circulation, which are printed either on a printer or on a copier.
A6 sheet 105*148mm 10.5*14.8cmA6 sheets are the size of a small notebook.
A7 sheet 74*105mm 7.4*10.5cm A8 sheets are the size of a regular pocket calendar.
A8 sheet 52*74mm 5.2*7.4cm
A9 sheet 37*52mm 3.7*5.2cm
A10 sheet 26*37mm 2.6*3.7cm

These formats are not changed. In addition to the Russian Federation, these dimensions are also fixed by international standards. I must say that it is very convenient, of course, because documents are used everywhere.

Paper, in addition to formats and sizes, is divided into a number of series. There are three of them: A, B and C. This division corresponds to international ISO standards.

  • A series paper mainly used for documents. For example, in Russia, A4 paper format is used to process various documents.
  • B series paper used for the production of printed products.
  • C series paper used for envelopes.

Paper size is the standardized paper size.

Standard paper sizes were different at different times in different countries. To date, mainly used:

  • international standard ISO 216 (A4 and related) and
  • North American system.

The ISO 216 standard was created in 1975 from the German DIN 476 standard and defined the A and B series of paper sizes. The standard is based on the metric system of measures and is based on the format of a sheet of paper with an area of 1 m². The standard has been adopted by all countries except the USA and Canada.

The most common consumer and specialty paper sizes are A4, A3, and A5. They are used for the following purposes:

  • conducting business correspondence;
  • preparation of drawings;
  • registration of design, technological documentation, diagrams and diagrams;
  • drawing, creating layouts, etc.;
  • print.

The principle of formation of sheet dimensions

The AO format is taken as the basis, which has an area of 1 m2 and dimensions in cm 118.9 x 84.1, and from it other main formats and additional ones are installed. The remaining paper sizes are obtained by dividing by two. This is established in GOST 21.301-68 and the international standard ISO 216, which are used in Russia and other countries. The principle of education is shown in fig. one:

JSC (118.9x84.1) A2 (59.4x42.0) A4(29.7x21.0) A5 (21.0x14.85) A5 (21.0x14.85) A3 (42.0x29.7) A1 (84.1x59.4)

A4 size in centimeters is 29.7 x 21.0. The second most applicable is the size of A3 in cm, it has the following data - 29.7 x 42.0.

Paper types

First of all, depending on the application, all formats produced by the industry are divided into the following series:

  • A - for documentation;
  • B - for printing use;
  • C - for envelopes.

Series A includes formats from A0 to A10 with sheet lengths in cm from 118.9 to 3.76 and widths from 84.1 to 2.6 cm.

Series B includes sizes B0 to B10 with sheet lengths in cm from 141.4 to 4.4 and widths from 100.0 to 3.1 cm. This standard is used in Canada and the USA.

The C series includes formats from C0 to C10 with sheet lengths in cm from 129.7 to 4.0 and widths from 97.1 to 2.8 cm.

The most used size for documents is the A4 format, in centimeters having a size of 29.7 x 21.0.

Attention! In the age of computerization, the size of an image is judged by the size of the file in megabytes. A4 sheet size is 33.2 mb (CMYK 300dpi).

The paper is also divided according to application. There are 10 groups:

  • for printing, including self-copying and self-adhesive;
  • decorative;
  • for writing, drawing, typing and other similar works;
  • packaging;
  • electrical engineering;
  • smoking;
  • photosensitive;
  • absorbent;
  • base paper;
  • industrial and technical.

Paper is also distinguished by the following parameters:

  • whiteness;
  • density;
  • color;
  • transparency;
  • type of surface (coated, matte, glossy, coated).

A4 size in cm, which is indicated above, is considered office paper, because. most often used as a consumable for copiers and printers, for business correspondence, making catalogs, promotional materials, drawings.

Like all objects around us, paper has its own measurements and dimensions. Moreover, this is not just length, width or area, these are the accepted ratios of these parameters. There is a table of paper sizes, where all the information is recorded, regarding a sheet of paper, which are called A2, B1 or C3. It's not just letters and numbers, it's an encoding of a certain paper size.

What is format

Format is the size of the paper. It replaces such words as "length", "width", "diagonal" and "area". Agree, it is much easier to ask for A4 or A3 than to name the sizes of sheets of paper in cm. The very concept of this term appeared relatively recently - only at the beginning of the 20th century. Before that, every publisher, and every person who dealt with a printing house, used different paper sizes that were convenient for him.

The most popular was the Golden Ratio. He was very fond of painters and sculptors of the Renaissance, respectively, these parameters were also used to measure sheets. This was inconvenient for the development of typographical business and, in general, for widespread use.

In the end, a sheet whose sides were related as one to the square root of two was recognized as a more convenient size for the sheets. If such a "piece" is bent in half, we get a rectangle whose sides are similar to the first, only having a smaller scale. This was the first step towards the creation of an international standard: the ISO 216 systems. But this is not the only classification of formats. There are others:

    North American standard;

    Japanese standard;

    guest accepted in our country.

International system

ISO 216 and the North American standard are the most common. Sheet sizes A1 A2 A3 A4, etc. refer to the first system, which is common in Europe and the former Soviet republics.

The basis on which the dimensions of paper of format A are measured is whatman paper A0 - it has an area equal to 1 m 2, and all subsequent dimensions are half of it.

That is, A1 is half of A0, A2 is a quarter of A0, and so on.

Printing paper most often has A4 format - it is standard. In English-speaking countries such as the UK, New Zealand and Australia, it has long been the main business letter size.

Our country had its own measurement system - according to GOST, the paper size format in cm differed from the international system. The main difference is that in ISO 216 measurements are made in millimeters, while for us, centimeters are more familiar. But since we mainly use imported equipment, which is focused on European standards, then we also have format A the most popular.

Other Options

Paper sizes of the format according to the international standard are divided into several series:

Everyone understands where A1 A2 A3 A4 sheet sizes are used, they are very common in everyday life. Other series are also often found, they are just not as well known.

For example, the B series is almost never used in the office, but is often used to create books, posters, envelopes, or any kind of ID. B0 is somewhere between A0 and A1, and is 1 meter wide, unlike A0. But format C is used only for envelopes, and its definition can be found in the table of ISO 269 standards.

The North American standard is used in the US, Canada and parts of Mexico. It relies on generally accepted parameters, but at the same time it has slight differences: firstly, they use inches as a unit of measurement, and not mm, and, accordingly, different paper sizes have a different designation from ours.

Knowing the formats is a must if you are dealing with construction, architecture, or you need to make drawings and visual aids for other reasons.

Hello to all those who are not all equal to the life of a blog site and, of course, to people who looked for information. I am glad to see you all on this blog. Today I want to tell you everything I know about paper sizes What are the sizes and their standards. Agree, anyone needs to know the paper size and format, I’m already silent about artists and designers.

Let's first understand what are paper sizes. The world's most common ISO 216 format according to GOST 5773-90.
All paper sizes according to the ISO 216 standard, they have the same aspect ratio. In simple words, the length of an A1 sheet is equal to half the width of an A0 sheet, and if it is even easier to explain, then look at the picture below and you will understand everything that I tried to explain.

I propose to consider where and what paper formats are often used:

Sheet A0 and A1- drawings, posters and posters.
Sheet A3, B4 and A2- drawings, diagrams, newspapers
Sheet A4- office paper, documents, letters, letterheads, magazines, catalogues, advertising materials, consumables for printers and copiers.
Sheet A5- greeting cards, identification cards, notebooks, notepads, leaflets, letterheads, promotional materials.
SheetB5, A5, B6, A6- books, booklets, brochures, postcards.
C4, C5, C6 formats- envelopes for letters on a sheet of A4 paper: not folded (C4), folded in half (C5), folded in three (C6).
C series formats- This size was designed for postal envelopes to fit A-series paper.

Photo format and dimensions

On the topic of paper sizes, I have everything. If I missed something, add it in the comments.

Best regards webmasterok2009

    Yes, indeed, these formats are not treason, they have a certain size, which is determined by international standards. It will be the same in Russia and Turkey, for example. Which is very convenient, because we use documents everywhere. They come from the A0 format (there is one). It has an area of one square meter. And everyone else divides it in half and they are already measured. Here's the arithmetic.

    Paper sheet formats are determined according to the published and approved standard: GOST2.301-68

    The main sizes of sheets of paper produced at all factories in the country are:

    • A1 (594841 mm.): Used in professional layout and design;
    • A2 (420594 mm.): Professional option for artworks of masters from different fields of art. It is used most often in a printing house for printing banners, by students for diploma and term papers. Fans of DPI will also like this format: it is quite extensive and will harmoniously fit into the surroundings;
    • A3 (297420 mm.): 2 times enlarged A4 sheet format; optimal for professional student work assigned in educational institutions. Pictures, floristry, decorative panels, collages, made in this size, look elegant, miniature, are a universal gift for the holiday
    • A4 (210297 mm.): a universal option for creative people, especially children who begin to learn to draw. The A4 sheet format is suitable for small sketches with ink, felt-tip pens, pencils, gel pens, as well as for printed materials. Widely and often used in printing houses.

    A PHOTO: Picture made on A1 sheet format

    Depending on the functional purpose, various types of formats, sheets of paper can be processed with special components or have a unique structured surface, for example: watercolor paper, perforated paper, decorative colored paper, pastel paper. When working with oil art devices, thicker, moisture-proof paper is used, most often canvases stretched on a stretcher.

    very handy little thing in this matter)) rescued several times already))

    In accordance with ISO standards, which are international, paper is divided into a number of series (A, B, C). Below is a table with these series, format and sizes.

    As can be seen from the table, A-series paper is mainly used for documents. For paperwork in Russia, A4 paper is used.

    Series B paper is usually used for printing products. And C series paper is used for envelopes.

    A1 format - 841cm by 594cm - this is the largest format, the so-called drawing paper, A2 format - 420cm by 594cm - this is a sheet of exactly half of whatman paper cut across, A3 format - 297cm by 420cm - this is again cut across the A2 format, but the A4 format - 210cm x 297cm is the most common paper size that is usually printed and xerified.

    I used to get confused all the time, although I only use the A4 format, I need other formats for selecting a passport or picture frames. That's thanks to this picture, everything became clear. I am no longer confused. I hope it will come in handy for you too.

    The size of the formats of the A series (established by the International Standard for Paper Sizes, ISO 216, based on the metric system of measures, coming from the format of a paper sheet having an area of 1 m - size A0).

    size format: width x length (mm)

    For technical documents, formats with a large aspect ratio are used, which are formed by repeatedly applying one of the standard formats along the long side of the sheet. For example, for series A, the following additional formats can be formed.

    For the first time I encountered paper formats at the institute. Then only I found out that the format called

    A1 has a size of 841 by 594 millimeters,

    A2 has a size of 420 by 594 millimeters,

    A3 has a size of 297 by 594 millimeters,

    but the most popular format, which is now in the office, and in the store, and at the university, is A4. Its format is 210 by 297 millimeters.

    The largest format is A0 (841mm by 1189mm.)

    Then - A2. A2 will have a size of 420mm. at 594 mm.

    After that there will be A3 format. A3 Format has a size of 297 mm by 420 mm.

    The smallest format is A4. And we see format 4 almost every day and use it during copiers.

    A4 has a size of 210 mm by 297 mm.

    I think my answer helped you.

    Wish you luck.

    A1, A2, A3, A4 are international paper sizes.

    The A1 format measures 841 millimeters by 594 millimeters;

    The A2 format measures 420 millimeters by 594 millimeters;

    The A3 format measures 297 millimeters by 594 millimeters;

    The A4 format has a size of 210 millimeters by 297 millimeters (the most common format).

    A1 format size - 841x594

    A2 size - 420x594

    A3 size - 297x420

    A4 size - 210x297

    All series (A, B, C) of existing paper formats refer to the world standard ISO 216

    Sizes of formats A series:

    A0 format - 841 cm * 1189 cm

    A1 format - 841 cm * 594 cm

    A2 format - 420 cm * 594 cm

    A3 format - 297 cm * 594 cm

    A4 format - 210 cm * 297 cm

    A5 format - 148 cm * 210 cm

    A6 format - 105 cm * 148 cm

    Below is the table of size formats of all series:

    The standard paper sheet size complies with ISO 216, the international standard.

    The sheet size can be easily calculated by yourself if the sheet size is A0. Its area is 1 square meter and the dimensions are 8411189 mm. The subsequent dimensions of the sheets are obtained by dividing it by half:

    A1 594mm x 841mm

    A2 420mm x 594mm

    A3 297mm x 420mm

    A4 210mm x 297mm

    Each image format of a file contains information about its width as well as its height in pixels. It is most convenient to judge the image size of the file size in megabytes.

    A1 - size in mm - 594 x 841, CMYK 300dpi - 265.5 mb

    A2 - size in mm - 420 x 594, CMYK 300dpi - 132.8 mb

    A3 - size in mm - 297 x 420, CMYK 300dpi - 66.4 mb

    A4 - size in mm - 210 x 297, CMYK 300dpi - 33.2 mb
