History reference

The Literary Museum is a subdivision of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is a scientific institution within the system of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Pushkin House was founded on December 15, 1905 on the initiative of a number of Russian cultural figures. One of the initiators of the Pushkin House was Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov (grandson of Emperor Nicholas I). In 1899, the Commission for the preparation of the celebration of the centenary of the birth of A. S. Pushkin was created at the Academy of Sciences, which initially planned to erect a monument to the poet, but gradually the idea was transformed into the creation of a museum. The main fund of the Pushkin House was collected by B. L. Modzalevsky. He also owned the draft "Regulations on the Pushkin House", approved by Emperor Nicholas II in 1907. In April 1906, government funds were allocated for the purchase of the Pushkin Library, and it was transferred to the Pushkin House, becoming the beginning of a huge collection of books, manuscripts and objects associated with the name of the great Russian poet. A significant part of the collection was acquired from the Paris Museum-collection of A. F. Onegin (Otto). Onegin's collection was acquired by the Imperial Academy of Sciences on May 15, 1909, but remained in the lifetime use of the Parisian collector. In 1922, the collection of the Pushkin House was replenished with family relics and documents kept in the Hannibal family, they were transferred to the museum by Pushkin's second cousin, Anna Hannibal. In 1925 Onegin died, and in 1928 his collection was also transferred to the Pushkin House. Since 1995, Pushkin House has been included in the State Register of Especially Valuable Cultural Heritage Objects.

Pushkin House in Literature

Alexander Alexandrovich Blok

Poem to "Pushkin House" (1921):

"The name of the Pushkin House

At the Academy of Sciences!

The sound is clear and familiar

Not an empty sound for the heart!

These are the sounds of ice

On the solemn river

Steamboat roll call

With a steamer in the distance

This is the ancient Sphinx, looking

Following the slow wave

Bronze rider, flying

On a motionless horse.

Our passionate sorrows

Above the mysterious Neva,

How we met a rainy day

White night fire.

What a fiery distance

The river opened up to us!

But not these days we called

And the coming ages.

Skipping days of oppression

short term deception

The days to come were seen

Blue-pink mist.

Pushkin! secret freedom

We sang after you!

Give us a hand in bad weather

Help in the silent fight!

Isn't it sweetness of your sounds

Inspired in those years?

Is not your joy, Pushkin

Covered us then?

That's why such an acquaintance

And the sound native to the heart

The name of the Pushkin House

at the Academy of Sciences.

That's why, at sunset

Leaving in the darkness of the night

From the white square of the Senate

I quietly bow to him."

The museum has nine employees and five scientists. The museum's collection includes more than three hundred items, one hundred and twenty items of the collection are on display and are included in the main funds of the museum. The Museum of the Institute of Russian Literature, one of the oldest literary museums in Russia, has the richest collection of documentary and artistic materials related to the history of Russian literature. The official founding date of the museum is considered to be 1905, when the Commission for the Arrangement of the Pushkin Anniversary decided to establish the Pushkin House. Since then, the name and structure of the institution have changed more than once, but its tasks - collecting, storing and studying materials on Russian literature - have remained unchanged. The museum in the broadest sense of the word is the entire Pushkin House with its richest archive, one of the largest in the world, and ancient storage, which includes unique copies of old printed and handwritten books. Initially, Pushkin House was located in the premises of the Academy of Sciences. In 1927, he was given the building of the former Customs House (1828-1832, architect I.F. Luchini), in which he is still located. The Literary Museum, which is a department of the Institute, is located on the second floor. From the very beginning of its existence, the collection of the Literary Museum was formed through donations from private individuals, the acquisition of well-known collections (the world's first Pushkin Museum, founded in Paris by A.F. Onegin (Otto), the Lermontov Museum of the Nikolaev Cavalry School, the Nekrasov and Tolstoy museums, etc. ). In turn, the Literary Museum of the Pushkin House became the ancestor of several literary museums: the Museum of N.A. Nekrasov, All-Union (now - All-Russian) Museum of A.S. Pushkin with all its branches. Many exhibits were transferred from here to the A.A. Blok. Nowadays, the museum's funds contain numerous portraits of Russian writers of the 18th - 20th centuries. (among them are the works of D.G. Levitsky, A.A. Ivanov, N.N. Ge), rare photographs, household and artistic objects of the XVIII - early. XX century, a collection of illustrations for the works of Russian writers, a special place is occupied by paintings and drawings of the writers themselves, memorial personal belongings of many of them, exhibits with autographs of famous literary figures. The museum funds give the most complete picture of Russian classical literature of the 2nd half of the 18th - 19th centuries. There is a large collection associated with literature and culture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection of the museum has only about 120 thousand exhibits. Among them, in particular, are the death masks of famous Russian writers. The permanent exhibition of the museum was opened shortly after the placement of the Pushkin House in the building of the former Customs House in 1927. Since then, she has changed many times. Currently, the museum exhibits Russian literature of the 18th - early 19th century. XX century., A special place is occupied by the names of G.R. Derzhavin, V.A. Zhukovsky, A.S. Pushkin, N.V. Gogol, I.S. Turgenev, L.N. Tolstoy ... The Lermontov Hall was opened with a unique collection of paintings and drawings by M.Yu. Lermontov; the so-called "Silver Age" of Russian literature is well represented. Temporary exhibitions dedicated to significant dates of Russian literature are held in the halls of the museum. The Literary Museum of the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences ("Pushkin House") operates in the form of a non-profit institution of historical specialization, that is, it does not have profit making as its main goal and does not distribute the profit among the participants. The Literary Museum of the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences ("Pushkin House") is an organization of municipal subordination. The museum conducts primarily scientific activities and solves the problems of replenishing and systematizing funds, conducting profile research.

The beautiful old building, now occupied by the Institute of Russian Literature, was built according to the project of I.F. Lukini on the Makarov embankment for the St. Petersburg port customs in 1832. Initially, as part of the preparations for the celebrations dedicated to the anniversary of the birth of A.S. Pushkin, it was planned to erect only a monument. However, over time, on the initiative of the Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, the idea arose to create a museum - the Pushkin House - which was opened in 1905.

Since 1995, the Pushkin House has been included in the collection of especially significant cultural heritage sites. Employees and directors of the Pushkin House (and among them were N.A. Kotlyarevsky, M. Gorky, A.V. Lunacharsky, P.I. Lebedev-Polyansky and others) according to the concept of the Museum as a collection of collections of materials (both documentary and artistic), having a close connection with Russian literature and its history, fruitfully worked on collecting, storing and studying materials on Russian literature. As a result, today the Pushkin House keeps the richest archive, one of the largest in the world.

More than 120 thousand titles of documentary, visual, historical materials that are directly related to Russian literature of the period of the 18th-20th centuries: rare copies of handwritten books and early printed literature, portraits of writers, rare photographs, author's illustrations for works, art objects of that era, personal things, death masks, relics and household items. Since its inception, the Literary Museum's funds have been formed through donations by private individuals and purchases of famous collections. Many exhibits were transferred from the personal collection of A.F. Onegin-Otto, founder of the Pushkin Museum (Paris).

Personal correspondence, a literary archive, a collection of autographs were bequeathed to the museum by Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich; The museum keeps relics of the Vyazemsky, Vrevsky, Arapov, Pletnev, Longinov, Raevsky families. Priceless materials were donated by the Department of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences and the Society of the Tolstoy Museum. The Alexander Lyceum (where A.S. Pushkin studied) donated the collection of the Pushkin Museum, and the Nikolaev Cavalry School (the place of study of M.Yu. Lermontov) - the Lermontov Museum. Museum funds have been substantially replenished at the expense of the memorial heritage of prominent representatives of Russian society - Ya.P. Polonsky, S.S. Abamelek-Lazareva, A.F. Koni, N.N. Wrangel.

Over time, the activities of the Pushkin House became more and more multifaceted - other literary museums appeared from its depths: the N.A. Nekrasov, All-Union Museum of A.S. Pushkin (with its branches), A.A. Blok, Museum of F.M. Dostoevsky and G. Uspensky. In addition, the museum organizes personal literary exhibitions dedicated to N.A. Nekrasov, F.M. Dostoevsky, I.S. Turgenev. It should be noted that the collection of the Tolstoy collection is a whole independent museum. In fact, the expositions of the Pushkin House level the absence of memorial museums of famous writers in St. Petersburg - Gogol, Lermontov, Tolstoy.

The premises of the Pushkin House host exhibitions dedicated to the significant dates of Russian literature, and the following main thematic halls are open: "Russian literature of the period of the first half of the 19th century"; "The life and work of the poet M.Yu. Lermontov"; "Russian literature of the period of the 2nd half of the 19th century"; "The life and work of the writer Leo Tolstoy"; "History of Russian Literature: The Silver Age".

“The name of the Pushkin House in the Academy of Sciences” is not just a poetic line by Alexander Blok, but a sight of St. Petersburg that is very interesting for any connoisseur of Russian literature to visit. The Pushkin House collection includes many hundreds of personal items of the "sun of Russian poetry", as well as rarities associated with the names of other Russian classics - Belinsky, Goncharov, Gogol, Lermontov ... Most of the port customs building of the early 19th century, which now houses Pushkin House, is closed to visit - scientific departments are located here, but everyone is waiting for the Literary Museum with several wonderful expositions dedicated to the history of Russian literature.

A bit of history

Pushkin House is, first of all, a separate scientific institution, which is part of the system of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its employees are engaged in scientific work in the field of literature - hence its official name - the Institute of Russian Literature. However, the history of Pushkin House began with the idea to erect a monument to the poet on the centenary of his birthday in 1899. The initiative group set to work with such enthusiasm that soon the idea was born to create a museum of Pushkin, and later of Russian literature in general. The first storage unit was the library that belonged to the poet; later the collection was supplemented with relics kept by the Hannibals, and then with many other exhibits. They were put on public display in the Pushkin House Literary Museum - today this is exactly the part of the institution that anyone can visit.

In the exposition of the Pushkin House Museum you can see the personal belongings of the poet, the death mask and the couch on which he died after being wounded in a duel.

What to watch

Pushkin House and its museum occupy the building of the old St. Petersburg port customs on Makarov Embankment, not far from Birzhevaya Square. It was built by the Italian architect Luchini in the first third of the 19th century. The building is interesting in itself - a classic facade with columns overlooking the Malaya Neva, an elegant rotunda and dark stone sculptures surrounding it.

The collection of the Pushkin House Literary Museum is divided into several expositions. The main one is dedicated, of course, to Pushkin - here you can see the poet's personal belongings, a death mask and a couch on which he died after being wounded in a duel. Pushkin's office has been recreated to the smallest detail: pay attention to the extensive library and desk. The enfilade of rooms illustrates the everyday life of that era, in addition, it contains objects that belonged to the poet's relatives.

The exposition "Poets of the Golden Age" tells about the writers of the 19th century who lived in St. Petersburg. It is worth paying attention to the memorabilia associated with the names of Goncharov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, as well as to the extensive collection of Lermontov's memorial items, including his wonderful paintings.

The Silver Age Hall presents manuscripts, lifetime editions, autographs, portraits and photographs of Mandelstam, Blok, Akhmatova, Gumilyov, Bunin and others.
