Interview with the director of the Borodino State Military Historical Museum-Reserve Igor Korneev:

- Did you have any experience in the museum field?

For the last few years I have been working at RVIO, and before that I had experience as a director of a cultural and exhibition center in Smolensk. I had to develop everything from scratch, and, of course, when there is a foundation, it is easier to work than to form it yourself: recruit a team and choose the direction of work. In Smolensk, it was possible, in my opinion, to create a unique platform, visiting which people always came across something new, unusual, and really looked forward to our events. The very visit to the center became an event for them. The key to success, it seems to me, was that the center was focused on the visitor. The Internet provided a huge help to our team, as when planning events, we relied, first of all, on the interests of different groups of people in social networks.

- Did you work in similar areas at RVIO?

Yes. At first it was the Museum of the Military Historical Society, then, as an adviser to the executive director of the RVIO, he oversaw traveling exhibition projects, including such a global one as "Remember ... the Soviet soldier saved the world!". According to preliminary estimates, the exposition was visited by more than 1 million people throughout Russia.

- Did you manage the process from Moscow?

Such a serious project requires personal presence in the regions, and its success largely depends on it. I built relationships with local authorities, supervised the editing and the entire media component. I was pleased to work, because I saw that people needed it, including the leadership of the regions. In general, such exhibitions of a federal scale as "Remember ... The world was saved by a Soviet soldier!", "Soviet Nuremberg" in the regions is very lacking.

- Tell us about the project that you supervised as part of the Year of Russian Cinema?

This is a mobile project "Our Movie Heroes". It is unique in terms of implementation. This is a transforming machine that turns into an exhibition hall, where, on top of everything else, we showed films created with the support of the RVIO and the Russian Ministry of Culture. Inside - an exhibition with showcases, information about the actors who served, were participants in the Great Patriotic War. The first reaction of people is surprise, since most do not expect to see a full-fledged exposition, and even more so combined with a cinema hall. For example, in Kostroma, schoolchildren aged 12-14 came to us. So, the whole class sat and watched "Brest Fortress". The development of the Internet, digital technologies has affected children, today they live differently. But when I see that teenagers enjoy watching our patriotic films, I conclude that we are on the right track.

- You have a fairly rich experience in the field of museum and exhibition activities. How do you plan to organize your work in a new position? Will there be an emphasis on unique projects?

In fact, we have three military fields in Russia - Kulikovo, Borodino and Prokhorovka. Borodino is an excellent brand, first of all, in the field of military historical tourism. Now, first of all, the task is to increase its attendance by both Russian and foreign tourists, that is, to make the museum more interesting for the public, a place for family recreation. Tourism is, of course, the main investment. But in order to attract tourists, events should not be monotonous and repeated from month to month - the visitor needs to be surprised. People should know that when they come to the museum, they will always see something new and they will want to come back here again. I still find it difficult to answer which way we will go, since the appointment has only just taken place, but even now I can say that the number of significant events will be significantly increased. In addition, we will solve the issues of transport accessibility and further improvement of the museum-reserve. A memorable historical place - "Borodino" is an excellent field for the implementation of large-scale projects related to the popularization of the history of the country and the preservation of the memory of its heroic past.

Igor Korneev is my advisor on a voluntary basis, I have known him for a long time also as a manager, the first head of the Tenishev cultural and exhibition center in Smolensk.
