Venues 12 June. The most interesting events to go to on Russia Day

26.06.2019

In Moscow, during an uncoordinated opposition rally "We demand answers" on Tverskaya Street. In terms of the number of arrests, the rally thus approached the action "He is not Dimon to you" on March 26, when more than 2,000 people got into paddy wagons. However, the differences from the action almost three months ago were significant. About the main ones - in the DW report.

Split in the ranks of the opposition

The anti-corruption rally of supporters of the opposition politician Alexei Navalny was authorized by the authorities and was supposed to take place on June 12 at 14.00 on Academician Sakharov Avenue in Moscow, but at the last moment the organizers' plans changed. The night before, Navalny announced on his website that due to the impossibility of reaching an agreement with sound equipment suppliers, the rally would take the form of a peaceful procession along Tverskaya Street. According to the politician, the mayor's office issued a ban on the installation of sound, which is a violation of the constitution and a humiliation of the opposition.

Some of Navalny's followers and traditionally government-critical figures reacted unexpectedly harshly to his call, saying that he uses people as "cannon fodder" without concern for their safety. For example, Vladislav Inozemtsev, director of the Center for Post-Industrial Society Studies, wrote on his Facebook page: "Aleksey suggested that citizens take a step that is extremely dangerous for them. I would not advise anyone to succumb to this call." Those who agreed with this position decided not to abandon the idea of a rally against Sakharov and to come there.

Other oppositionists, in particular the editor-in-chief of Ezhednevny Zhurnal Alexander Ryklin, called these plans cowardice and spoilers. "And why are you going there (to Sakharov. - Ed.) will you go? Have you already made up your mind to protest, but is it dumb to go out on Tverskaya? Yes, come on! We won't even notice... Better stay at home," he wrote.

As a result, two opposition actions took place in Moscow at once. At the same time, the capital was splendidly celebrating the Day of Russia - several dozen venues hosted concerts and the Times and Epochs festival, which is a large-scale historical reconstruction. On June 12, it was dedicated to the victories of Russia.

Total renovation to help the special services

The procession on Tverskaya on June 12 differed from the action on March 26 mainly in that a huge number of construction fences and equipment appeared on the sidewalks and the roadway, preventing the passage of people. As a result, Navalny's plans, who, as in March, proposed to walk along Tverskaya Street towards the Kremlin, were violated, and people moved chaotically, both up - towards Mayakovskaya and Belorusskaya, and down, diverging into side streets in the hope of finding an opportunity to get to Tverskaya in the place where there will be no fences or special forces columns.

By the beginning of the event, part of the exits from the Tverskaya metro station was closed, and by 15:00, access to the underground passage leading to the metro was open only to the entrance. Citizens were asked to enter the city through the Chekhovskaya station. Among the lost and confused people there were many elderly people who, due to stuffiness and pressure, did not know how to find their way. The loudspeakers announced that the action had not been agreed upon, and suggested that those who wished to go to the agreed rally - on Sakharov Square.

Since the action took place on Russia Day, Navalny suggested that supporters paint the Russian tricolor on their faces and take Russian flags with them. There were very few people with symbols on their cheeks, and there were few who carried flags.

As the girl who sold the flags told DW, there are buyers, but not many. Only a few met with large flags. In particular, at the Izvestiya newspaper building on Pushkinskaya, two young men with banners gathered a large crowd around them, which from time to time chanted the traditional opposition slogans: "Russia without Putin", "We are the power here." And when the spetsnaz column tried to divide the crowd, - "Shame!"

Detentions on Tverskaya Street and "sterile" rally on Sakharov Street

However, there were no arrests. One of the first to be detained was Alexei Navalny himself - in the entrance of his own house. In accordance with Part 8 of Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (repeated violation by the organizer of a public event of the established procedure for organizing or holding a meeting. - Ed.), he faces a sanction of a maximum of 30 days of arrest. On the evening of June 12, he was taken to the Simonovsky District Court.

Context

By 7 pm Moscow time, more than 730 people, according to the human rights media project OVD-Info, were also detained among the marchers. They were taken to 39 police departments. Among them are minors, foreign citizens and journalists. Some, according to OVD-Info, were beaten, in particular, for disobedience to police officers who forbade the use of mobile phones.

Despite the coordination of the action, the arrest took place on Sakharov Avenue - the main organizer of the action, the director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), Roman Rubanov, fell into the hands of the police. According to him, he tried to draw the attention of the police to the fact that people who were not declared at the event were speaking from the stage, after which he was detained. The rest of the rally on Sakharov passed quietly. His main topic was the fight against the demolition of "Khrushchev" in Moscow. During the event, activists collected signatures for the resignation of the Moscow government. The action ended around 16.00, leaving the participants with mixed feelings. "The rally on Sakharov turned out to be degenerate," one of the observers shared on her Facebook.
