Online conference with Helena Meraai, representative of Belarus at Junior Eurovision 2017

Helena Meraai: "In The Fault in Our Stars, I borrowed a favorite phrase with which I now go through life:" The world is not a wish-fulfilling factory, but if you want something, you will achieve everything yourself.

Self-confidence is important. I was the first number on the stage, and I gave so much energy to the guys who are in the hall, because for me it was the main thing that I was standing on this stage at all. The rest doesn't matter. But when they announced that I was the winner, I did not immediately understand what had happened. I look into the hall, I see Olya Drozdova (it was impossible not to notice her), I see my mother, these happy eyes, I see the guys from the support group, and I was so happy, you can’t imagine! Everything inside me just lifts, and now I understand that I have such a big responsibility."

A dress rehearsal of the performances of all participants of the Junior Eurovision took place in Tbilisi today. After evaluating the competition performances, a BelTA correspondent asked Anton Samsonov, president of the OGAE Russia club (a Russian club of fans of the competition), head of the Escrus project, who watches children's and adult music competitions almost every year, to analyze each number. Here are the highlights of the conversation.

No. 1. Cyprus

The show will be opened by Nicole Nikolaou from Cyprus. According to Anton Samsonov, the first rehearsal showed that the contestant needed to work on her breathing. Then the problem was dealt with. Now, according to the critic, there is another drawback - in the television picture (at least today), the girl looked somewhat frightened. Perhaps, at the rehearsal, she saved her strength and worked at half strength, and already in the final she will show all the possibilities.

No. 2. Poland

The representative of Poland will speak second. Alicia Rega is perfect in everything: she has a well-written song, she is a professional vocalist. An essential point that can prevent the contestant from taking the top line of the rating is that against the background of younger children, she looks too adult.

Number 3. Netherlands

Group Fource from the Netherlands will represent their country under the third number. As far as this country is concerned, the boys consider themselves stars. However, due to age, according to the critic, the guys have some roughness in their performance. Only one guy out of the four had a voice breakdown, so he has a low tempo and really good vocals.

No. 4. Armenia

Misha (Mikael Grigoryan) from Armenia will perform fourth. At the first rehearsal, he showed the maximum of his abilities, and it sounded very good. Then the boy began to save energy. In general, according to Anton Samsonov, this is a national feature of Armenia. In this regard, he remembered not the best rehearsals of the same Sirusho at the adult Eurovision 2008, which performed the song "Qele Qele". Despite this, the singer reached the final and took 4th place. A typical example at Junior Eurovision is Dalita, a contestant in 2011. At all rehearsals, she held back, but then she gave her maximum in front of the jury and the audience.

No. 5. Belarus

The representative of Belarus Helena Meraai will perform under the fifth number. “From the point of view of vocals, it’s impossible to find fault with anything at all. She works perfectly. And what impresses me very much is that she doesn’t scream,” said Anton Samsonov. Now there is a general tendency in teaching vocals - this is the American style, when they try to give out something in a pseudo-jazz style, as a result of which they just scream. Helena doesn't. "She sings her note, but does not go for sharper vibrations. And due to this, the voice goes very well with the music," the critic added.

A negative point that can affect Helena's result is the neighborhood of younger contestants. An Armenian boy who works in the so-called junior group is speaking in front of her. She is also followed by a very small contestant. And Helena has an adult song, in principle, she is already an accomplished artist, her song is at the level of an adult competition. Nevertheless, Helena looks much more advantageous than all the "age" contestants.

Anton Samsonov admitted that Helena conquered him with her seriousness. Being at a press conference, he asked her what the diminutive form of her name sounds like. The contestant listed the options, but noted that she prefers to be called Helena. Such a formal approach at her age indicates that a person is preparing himself for the big stage.

No. 6. Portugal

Marianna Venancio from Portugal will perform sixth. This is a small child with a charming charisma. She shows an absolutely childish number. In this case, this plays to her advantage, because in a children's competition, the performance usually wins, in which the amount of positive and directly childishness is very large. In Portugal, it's all just rolls over. The girl herself is excellent on stage, works great on camera.

No. 7. Ireland

Seventh - Murenne McDonnell from Ireland. According to the age parameter, the contestant was between the group of adult girls, which includes Belarus, and the younger group, which includes Portugal and Malta. Ireland is a hostage of the image: a girl with a guitar is standing on the stage. For the listener, the composition may seem incomprehensible and unusual.

From myself, I’ll add that this number seemed very interesting to me, and the composition itself will definitely appear in my playlist.

No. 8. Macedonia

Mina Blazhev from Macedonia is eighth. As for the representative of this country, she is also included in the group of adult girls. Mina is very mature on stage and tries to show a teenage number. In terms of vocals, she is very stable. She has a very interesting production, oversaturated with special effects. This number is entirely in the spirit of adult Eurovision.

No. 9. Georgia

The second half is opened by the incomparable representative of the host country Grigol Kipshidze, who will perform ninth. Everything about him is great both in terms of music and vocals. In principle, Georgia has never performed poorly. Why you can love Belarus and Georgia - they are a kind of quality mark. And they always know how to choose the right song.

No. 10. Albania

Ana Kodra from Albania is tenth. Albanian showed progress at rehearsals, the critic believes. She eschewed harsh moments in the chorus, jazz improvisation, which is very difficult for a child's voice and can have consequences. Now the girl began to sound softer and more pleasant. The disadvantage of the contestant is that she can get lost against the background of charismatic children. The representative of Portugal, for example, has much brighter charisma, she smiles more interestingly, conveys emotions, looks direct. Albania has the most serious text that does not fit with a small child.

№11.Ukraine

Next, in turn, Anastasia Baginskaya from Ukraine will speak. The girl at the rehearsals, most likely, did not give all her best. In addition, at the first rehearsals, a very small girl, because of the makeup, looked the same age as Helena.

No. 12. Malta

Gianluca Chilia from Malta takes charisma. He was vocally perfect from the very first run. The contestant does a great job on camera. Malta has every chance to win a third time.

No. 13. Russia

Polina Bogusevich from Russia is the strongest vocalist in the competition. The delegation did everything in its power to make the number look deliberately serious, complex, with a social message. It has a sophisticated dramaturgy. The choreography is good, the arrangement is worked out to the maximum. Polina is an accomplished adult artist, she sings about super-serious things. This may affect its result.

No. 14. Serbia

Irina Brodich and Jana Paunovic from Serbia play their uncomplicated number perfectly. They are very pleasant to look at. In fan tops, they are closer to the end, but as a result, they will not be there. Such performances in viewers evoke emotions, they say, what a charm. And people will vote.

Well, tomorrow we will know the name of the winner.
