Explanatory note

In the painting curriculum for 1st year students of the specialty "Painting", a significant place is given to still life: 36 hours in the 1st semester and 132 hours in the 2nd semester. Another 50% of this time is devoted to independent homework. A consistent development of still lifes is envisaged, starting with simple natural productions and ending with complex thematic still lifes. In productions made up of everyday objects, problems are solved related to the study of chiaroscuro and tonal solution of form, color relationships and color, that is, those means of expression that the artist uses when creating a work.

Simple, clear geometric forms, which underlie the study of still life, enable first-year students to get acquainted with the means and methods of constructing a three-dimensional image on a plane in connection with the environment.

Mastering the technique of watercolor painting is a mandatory requirement of the program for the 1st course. Watercolor has great pictorial possibilities, convenient and efficient, allows you to use a variety of techniques.

Both in classroom practical classes and in independent homework, special attention is paid to the acquisition of knowledge and skills in building a form, the ability to see and convey a diverse state of nature depending on lighting conditions, and the correct methodological sequence of work on still life painting.

When performing a still life sketch, the number of stages is determined by the complexity of the field setting, but the following are considered to be the main stages:

1) compositional placement of the image of the entire group and individual objects on the plane of the sheet;

2) linear-constructive solution of the form, taking into account their proportions, movement and spatial position;

3) determination of the overall color tone; transfer of general large tonal and color relationships proportional to nature;

4) modeling the three-dimensional form of objects, identifying the gradations of light and shade and their pictorial study, taking into account the aerial perspective;

5) a generalizing stage of work on the completion of the study; identification of the main and secondary in the color structure of the study; subordination of all parts of the image to the whole.

A cycle of homework in still life painting, in close connection with homework in drawing and composition, leads to the development of artistic observation, figurative thinking, creative imagination, a sense of color and color relationships.

Ultimately, students should acquire a solid knowledge of still life painting, necessary for independent work.

hot enamel(from French email) - an enamel technique in which a pasty mass colored with metal oxides is applied to a specially treated surface and fired, resulting in a vitreous colored layer.

There are several types of enamels, depending on the technique of its manufacture:

  • Miniature on enamel, finift- a technique of artistic enameling, which uses the technique of brush easel painting. The first registration of the image is performed on a white enamel background of a copper base plate. After underpainting, the plate is dried, fired in a muffle furnace at 800 degrees and again prescribed. To obtain maximum color sophistication and detail in the drawing, the enamel artist repeats this process many times.
  • Painted (picturesque) enamel- on the front side, the outline of the image and its details are written with saturated enamel paint. Since the enamel is applied in fragments, firing is done 10-15 times, taking into account the different level of melting temperature of the enamels used.
  • cloisonne enamel- for its manufacture, a thin metal plate is taken, on which the contour of the future image is cut through. Then, thin metal strips are soldered along this contour, obtaining an image from cells of various shapes and sizes. Each cell is filled with enamel of a different color to the upper edge of the partitions and the enamel is fired.
  • Enamel on filigree (filigree)- a floral or geometric ornament is soldered onto a metal surface from an intertwined metal wire, which forms cells. Each cell is filled to the brim with enamel of a different color, which, after firing, settles and turns out to be below the filigree ornament. As a result, enamel is not polished on filigree.
  • champlevé enamel- a plot or ornamental image is deeply cut (removed) on a metal plate. The resulting recesses are filled with transparent or opaque enamel and the enamel is fired. In the technique of champlevé enamel, several techniques are known to achieve an artistic effect.
  • Engraving enamel is a type of champlevé enamel technique.
  • Enamel on guilloché background- a kind of engraving enamel technique. Engraving is done mechanically, using a special machine. In the guilloche enamel technique, only transparent enamels of the widest range of colors are used.
  • casting enamel- the image is obtained by casting it together with a metal base plate. Then the recess on the plate is filled with enamel.
  • Relief enamel- a technique used for artistic enameling in high relief, when the enamel coating repeats the shape of a metal relief image, acting as a glaze.

Plein air.

Dmitry Revyakin very often paints from nature. Any artist will confirm that the only way to gain the experience of a real painter is to work en plein air, studying nature. It is a fascinating activity to find a place in nature and early in the morning to paint a beautiful landscape from nature. It is best to work in the morning or in the evening, because the colors at this time are most interesting for the artist. By studying nature, you will learn real, not fictional shades, find and compare complex color combinations with the reality around you.
"A painter's picture will not be perfect if he takes the pictures of others as an inspiration; if he learns from natural objects, he will produce a good fruit" Leonardo Da Vinci.

1) Selecting a topic:

In my thesis, I turned to one of the types of fine art - painting. Landscape was chosen as the theme of the work. It is appropriate to quote the famous Russian landscape painter I.I. Shishkina: “The picture should be a complete illusion, and this cannot be achieved without a comprehensive study of the chosen motifs, to which the artist feels the greatest attraction, which remained in his childhood memories, that is, the landscape should be not only national, but also local.” (Abeldyaeva I. G. School of Fine Arts. Issue 5. - M., 1962).

The criterion in choosing the topic was my personal attitude to the local seascape. The desire to convey in the picture the sunny state, the view of the Tsemes Bay, familiar from childhood, complemented by modern buildings of the seaport.

2) Collection of material:

a picture is the creation of a holistic image of nature, it is an artistic generalization, a transformation of nature with the help of the artist's imagination. It is impossible to beautifully transform what you have no idea about. Therefore, the creation of a landscape is always preceded by a long work on sketches from nature. “You should look at nature simply, carefully, trying to understand its general impression, and go from it to the details ...” (Masters of Soviet Art on Landscape, 1965).

To carry out the work, a collection of preparatory material was carried out. These are sketches, pencil sketches, picturesque short-term and long-term studies made from nature.

(Appendix A, figures A1-A6). The main advantages of a landscape study are the transfer of a certain state of illumination of nature, the influence of the air environment and a significant space. The sketches were made at different times of the year, different times of the day.

3) compositional and coloristic solution:

The compositional integrity of a pictorial study depends on the relationship between the main and the secondary, on linking the entire image into a single work. When highlighting the compositional center, the artist has to consciously generalize the details, weaken the tone and strength of the color of objects moving away from the compositional center, and subordinate all tone and color relationships to the main one.

4) cardboard (preparatory drawing):

having specified the idea in sketches and sketches, having found a linear and color composition, you need to start drawing the entire composition on cardboard or paper (Appendix A, Fig. A7). Cardboard is made in full size with a pencil, charcoal. In it, the compositional solution, the nature of the form and proportion of objects, the tasks of aerial and linear perspective are honed and brought to completion, the landscape planning is determined, and the compositional center is being worked out. After that, the drawing from the cardboard (through tracing paper or powder) is transferred to the canvas.

5) Painting on canvas:

after compositional searches and making cardboard, you can start painting on canvas, starting with underpainting, clarifying tonal and color relationships, laying shadows, working through details. Next comes the summary and completion of the work (Appendix A, Fig. A8-A14).
