Straight lines in Photoshop. How to draw a straight line in Photoshop: regular, broken or at an angle

13.04.2019

In this tutorial, I will give 3 simple examples of how to draw a curved line in Photoshop. Let's get started.

Method number 1. Circle.

First, draw a regular circle, using the tool oval region. With this tool it is easy to draw a circle in this way: with the tool selected, change the tool style from "Normal" on "Specified Size" and just set the same size for the height and width of the circle. Or you can do all the operations not with a circle, but with an ellipse. Then just click on the sheet with the mouse, and you will have a selection of the specified size. After that, right-click on the selected area and select the item from the menu Stroke. In the window that appears, select the color and size of the brush. Next, just press on the keyboard "Ctrl" + "D" and your selection will disappear.

Now create another layer on top of the circle. And in a new layer, draw a circle, but without a stroke.

Now just fill inside the selected area with the same color as the background and press the keys "Ctrl" + "D" to remove selection.

Method number 2. Rectangle.

First, draw a rectangular area, stroke, but do not remove the selection yet (how to do this is described in method No. 1).

Then go to the menu "Filter" (Filter) - "Plastic" (liquify). Or press the keyboard shortcut "Shift" + "Ctrl" + "X".

And bend your shape, then press OK. After that, it remains only to remove the selection and remove unnecessary details with an eraser.

Method number 3. Feather.

Perhaps the easiest way is the tool "Feather". Many do not understand what this tool is for just because they do not know how to use it. Everything is simple here. Choosing a tool "Feather", first style it "Contour" (Paths). Then on the sheet, simply put a point with this tool. Release the mouse button and place a second point on the other side, but this time, without releasing the mouse button, drag and you will see how you have the outline of a curved line.

After that, it remains only to stroke the contour, as in the first method with a circle, and also right-click on the contour, select "Delete Outline".

In this way it is very convenient to draw wavy lines.

Wavy lines are more convenient to draw with an anchor pen. To do this, you need to put two points on the page with a pen, which will automatically be connected by a line. And then, pulling the middle of this line, bend the line with the same pen.

Feather

  1. Without releasing the mouse button when creating a new point, you can achieve smoothing of the line.
  2. It is better to put points in places where the line should have a bend.
  3. Holding down a key ctrl you can move the control points of the lines using the keyboard.
  4. Holding down a key alt you can adjust the degree of rounding of the line near the point and its distortion

I was inspired to test Photoshop for its suitability in terms of line drawing. draw lines in photoshop harder than in its vector counterparts and some raster editors - this is the impression I got after getting acquainted with the tools in Paint Tool Sai, Illustrator, Inkscape and others, which have more convenient and flexible tools for creating beautiful linear shapes.

However, not everything is so bad. Having studied the specifics of working with the tool Feather, some tricks have been discovered that make it easier to draw lines and make design work more free.

    Pen Techniques for Creating Lines

Many people know the first two rules, but 3 and 4 became a discovery for me.

Having created a shape, you can correct the shape and position of the bends of the line and achieve the desired shape.

You can change both the point itself and the position of the guide “whiskers”, which define the shape of the corner near the point.

    Working with the finished line

All the lines you create are in the box Path(Ways). It is desirable for each line to create a separate “layer of lines” in the Path panel.

    Crtl+h- Hide/Show lines.

Stroke Path… - line stroke function. You can select the tool that will be stroked. Usually this is a brush, and before using this function, it is advisable to set the brush to the desired thickness, and only after resorting to a stroke.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create beautiful abstract lines that will come in handy in the design of your work. This tutorial is perfect for beginners.

This is what the final result looks like:

Step 1. Create a new document 800x800 px in size, fill the background with black. Create a new layer above the background, press the P key to activate pen tool(Feather). Create a line like in the screenshot below:

If you can't draw a curve, no big deal. To do this, hold down the ALT key and drag the end of the curve to edit its shape:

Press B to activate brush tool(Brush), select a 1 px brush:

In the window color picker(Color selection) select the desired color:

Activate again pen tool(Pen) (P), then right-click on the created curve and select Stroke Path(outline stroke):

Choose Brush(Brush) from the drop down menu, make sure the option is Simulate Pressure(Simulate pressure) is active, and click OK:

And we get such a beautiful curve:

Step 2 Using the process described above, we create three more lines. Make sure that:
- each line is on a separate layer;
- for the first line, the brush size is 2 px, the second - 3 px, the third - 4 px;
- reduce the opacity of the layers to 80%, 60% and 40%.

We correct the location of the lines and get the following result (4 lines on 4 layers):

Step 3 Create a group "Lines" Layer - New - Group(Layer - New - Group) and move all 4 layers with lines into it. Duplicate the group once and merge the copy of the group into one layer (CTRL+E). Reduce the opacity (opacity) of the new layer to 70% and move the lines below and to the left to create a depth effect:

We continue to duplicate the layer to create more lines:

Now we need to color the lines a bit. To do this, use an adjustment layer. Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation(Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Hue / Saturation) for layers with lines (do not forget to create a clipping mask for the adjustment layer CTRL + ALT + G).

Choose any color you like:

We continue to add more colors. You can use Free Transform(Free Transform) (CTRL+T) to adjust the angle of the lines:

We also adjust the size of the lines:

Step 4 Now let's add some gray lines. For this, we pass Image - Adjustments - Desaturate(Image - Adjustment - Desaturate) or SHIFT+CTRL+U to desaturate one of the layers:

By blending the gray lines together with the rest:

And we get the following result:

Step 5 Almost finished. Now merge the layers with the lines that we created into one (CTRL + E), then duplicate them, rotate, change position:

Let's add abstract dots around the lines to diversify the work. To do this, set up the brush as shown below (press F5 to bring up the brush options window).

Adobe Photoshop has a plethora of built-in features that you can use to create various objects, retouch photos, and more. A novice user who has just begun to comprehend the basics of this program will not hurt to consider such a problem as how to draw a straight line in Photoshop. And for those who have been in this environment for a long time, it may be interesting to remember the basic ways of drawing a straight line. One method or another will be useful in individual cases.

How to draw a straight line in Photoshop?

There are many ways and techniques for drawing various lines and elements. But before you draw a straight line in Photoshop, you need to keep in mind that there are three basic and quick ways to draw lines: the Brush tool, the Pen tool, and the Line tool. Despite their simplicity, it can be assumed that everyone has their own drawing technique and each user chooses the tool himself, guided by his preferences and the task that he faces.

Brush tool

The simplest and most understandable method is drawing with the Pencil and Brush tools in Photoshop. It is worth bearing in mind that these tools draw, and do not create some kind of object, so the image of the lines will be on the most selected layer. You can avoid this situation and draw a line on a separate layer created. In this case, you can freely edit the brush trail without harming other layers.

To draw a line, just select the Brush or Pencil tool. Then click on the left mouse button and set the direction of the line with the cursor. In addition, using the right mouse button, you can call up an auxiliary window with settings where you can select the type of brush, determine the hardness and shape of the tip.

A straight line can be drawn using the tool in question by the method of multiple magnifications of the image. The closer the image is, the more likely it is to draw a more or less straight line by hand. A perfectly straight line can be created by holding down the Shift key and using the same Brush / Pencil tool. Having activated the necessary tool, hold down the left mouse button and the Shift key - we observe the construction of a straight line, controlled by the cursor.

Line Tool

There is another way to draw a straight line using the Line tool in Photoshop. The quick access panel includes a block that combines a number of geometric tools, including the one under consideration. The created lines will be distributed into new layers, which are formed automatically after drawing a straight line.

Before you draw a straight line in Photoshop, you must select the tool of the same name and click on the left mouse button at the point where this element will begin. To complete the construction, you need to click on the LMB again.

The convenience of this method lies in the fact that the lines can be combined into a common layer and provide full editing of a group of constructed elements. The merged layer, after finishing work on it, can be rasterized, however, working with the merged elements in the vector graphics format will no longer work. You can format a rasterized layer just like any other layer. Another advantage is the fact that you can edit the lines themselves without losing quality. The vector line editing menu is located at the top of the program - its header. Here you can set the color of the line, its outline, shape and thickness.

Pen Tool

A versatile tool for creating figures of varying complexity. Using this function and the image magnification method, you can select hard-to-reach areas in the image in the new shape. So, for example, you can draw both straight lines in Photoshop and curves. It is extremely important to master this tool - it is used everywhere in many creative works when it is necessary to cut out some image or create a new graphic interpretation.

Interaction of the Brush and Pen tools

Using the pen, you can easily draw a straight line in Photoshop. To do this, you must first select the "Brush" tool, where a dialog box opens with the right mouse button and the desired stiffness, size and color of the future line are entered. Now you should activate the Pen tool in the quick access panel (in addition to the usual pen, there are other types of the Pen tool in the block, but we will not need them). We put the first reference point in the place where the beginning of the line should be. Then we put another point - the end of the line.

The Pen tool does not create a work object, but only a path. In order for the user to be able to turn the path into a real object, he needs to stroke the path. The Paths panel is located by default in the lower right corner, where layers are usually located. In this window, the "Contour" tab is selected, where you can see our work path. Right-click on the path and select Stroke Path. In the Photoshop window that appears, the brush is by default in the field - you don’t need to change anything, just confirm the action.

How to draw a straight line in Photoshop?

It is not difficult to draw a straight line in Photoshop.

You can simply hold down the Shift key while picking up a pencil or brush. Then the line will be flat with a fixed point.

Or with a rectangular area if you want a thicker line.

You put a point with a pencil without pressing Shift, then you press Shift and put the second point. A straight line will appear between these two points.

I recently needed to do this, I didn’t find the function, but I guessed to hold down the Shift key and just draw with a pencil (or brush). A straight line is drawn, but only either strictly horizontally or vertically (no oblique). Although, in principle, if you need to obliquely, you can rotate the line.

PS. I'm still in Photoshop at an amateur level, so maybe there are some special tools for drawing a straight line that I'm not aware of.

To draw a line, you need to select a tool in Photoshop from the very top called Rectangular Marquee and draw a line of the desired thickness and length with it. Next, it needs to be painted over with tools like Gradient, Pencil or Fill...

Hot key U on top of the toolbar will be a line.

Choose a brush, color, put a point where you want to start the line, then press Shift and without releasing put a point where you want to end the line.

2 days before entering the program, refrain from drinking alcohol and intoxicants

    • Select the brush tool.
    • We set it up in such a way that any dynamics of shape and size would be turned off.
    • hold down the shift and draw up / down or left / right, depending on where you want to draw a line. If you draw in a new layer, then you can then rotate it to the desired angle with the transformation tool - ctrl + T
  • In order to draw a straight line in Photoshop, we just need to use the pencil in this program to press the left click and without releasing press the button Shift (Shift). After that, we direct the mouse in the direction we need and we get a straight line.

    There is nothing difficult here)

I wish you good luck in drawing in Photoshop.

As I remember, you can draw a straight line in Photoshop if you press and hold the Shift key and at the same time select a brush or pencil then draw your straight line, but you can not draw either vertically or horizontally ..

For example, when I need to draw a straight line in Photoshop, I just take a pencil or a brush in the program, then put a point in the required place and, without releasing, press the shift key and lead my line in the required direction.

  • How to draw a line in Photoshop

If you take the Rectangular Marquee Tool, you can easily make a thin horizontal selection in the form of a line, which can be filled with some color (Edit -> Fill...).

There are quite a lot of different questions on Photoshop on BV. For example:

  • Drawing a straight line in Adobe Photoshop is not difficult at all. First you need to select a brush or pencil (if you need a thin line, then a pencil is better, if a thick one with a feathered border, then select the appropriate brush), set the desired thickness and color. And then, holding down the Shift key, draw a line. It will be perfectly flat.
