Steampunk style in scrapbooking. Scrapbooking from Anna Dabrowski: wonderful steampunk work Characteristics of the style

10.07.2019

And today we would like to tell you about this interesting, extraordinary and provocative style in scrapbooking - about steampunk.

steampunk (steampunk,from English. steam - steam and punk - protest) is a genre of science fiction that has recently become a fashionable trend in design. The steampunk style is based on the technology of steam mechanisms, which has replaced electronics. As a rule, steampunk implies an alternative version of the development of mankind with a pronounced general stylization for the era Victorian England (second half of the 19th century) and the era of the early capitalism with a characteristic urban landscape and contrasting social stratification.

The term steampunk itself only emerged in the late 1980s, as an ironic version of the word "cyberpunk". It is believed to have been invented by the writer Kevin Jeter , who tried to find a common term for the works of "The Anubis Gates" Tim Powers (1983), James Blaylock's Homunculus (1986), and his own works Night of the Morlocks (1979) and Infernal Devices (1987). In all these works, the world was at the level of technology of the 19th century, and the style of narration imitated Victorian fiction.

However, this genre became most famous thanks to comics, anime, and cinema. Now it has found wide application in scrapbooking.

What makes Steampunk exactly Steampunk?

Characteristic style elements:

Factory chimneys, red brick;

cobblestone pavements;

The sky is gray, smog;

Various steam engines that have reached a high degree of development: flying ships, airships, antique cars, locomotives, steam locomotives, steam carriages;

Robots and various complex riveted metal mechanisms;

Dials, arrows;

Telegraph;

Primitive arc lamps;

Mechanical prostheses;

Non-electronic calculating machines;

Pocket watch on a chain;

Cane;

For aristocrats - top hat, tailcoat;

For workers - a cap, a strong jacket, boots;

For ladies - a corset, crinoline, stockings with garters, a bonnet on the head.

Based on the listed characteristic elements of the steampunk style, it is worth notingkey points for work V extraordinary style:

The background is predominantly dark;

You can print appropriate pictures, for example, pictures depicting blueprints, steam engines, airships, old cameras, typewriters, as well as industrial landscapes: factories, brick chimneys, train stations;

The font can be stylized as a typewriter font or handwritten;

When performing work, use gears (which can be removed from unnecessary hours);

The image of antique dials and the dials themselves will be relevant;

Various chains, buckles, keys, locks, keyholes;

Wire, and metal wires, and ropes will find their application;

Various numbers;

Feathers may be present;

Decoration with flowers is acceptable, but only dark ones.

Scrap material manufacturers such as Graphic 45 and their Steampunk Debutante paper collection also contribute to the development of the style.

Steampunk. Hearing this word, I want to say in a hard voice: "Back to 80" s ... 1880 "s! .." The first thing that comes to mind: metal, gears, the Victorian era!

The main thing I read most often about steampunk is that it is for containment. n but-men's works. But the ability to use lace, sewing and velvet in the work softens the work as a whole, while by adding flowers to the work, you can get something absolutely feminine.

Yes, the colors are more masculine, but all these corsets and outfits of the Victorian era are very feminine in my opinion ...

Winged
The style is very recognizable, well-defined, and also firmly established in scrapbooking. As far as I know, one of the sources of steampunk is science fiction of the 19th century, especially Jules Verne here in the subject with his love of mechanisms.
Modern steampunk is a stylization, mainly of Victorian England (second half of the 19th century), but now, it seems to me, it has become somewhat wider - elements such as microcircuits-transistors-resistors and others are also used.
However, I doubt that this is pure steamman

Indy
Initially, the concept was based on a steam engine(steam) and all that. There, the electrician was in its infancy, I don’t remember exactly how they began to convert steam into electricity, but there is a system of levers and all that!

Who first of all associates the word "steampunk" with what? For some reason, I have strangely dressed people (steampunk is also very widely represented in fashion) and insanely beautiful home-made jewelry from all sorts of gears. In scrap with Finnabai r art and the Graphic45 collection, and now Prima has a new collection.

V.S.
I have - with viciously aggressive aunts with wings and the cold of metal, represented primarily by gears from real mechanisms. Maybe that's why I don't understand this style and don't like it)))

Smilla
I have two images A associations (and both in the form of scrap works), the first is people - women with mannequin bodies and men in top hats and glasses, the second - a bunch of gears, light bulbs and other details, and a thick layer of textured paint.

bestia_cat
My associations: women with chiseled figures, in corsets, long skirts of the Victorian era, with wings behind their backs; men in pilot suits of the same era or in formal suits and bowler hats. Goggles are obligatory, in my opinion a very characteristic subject of the image of any steampunker. This is about fashion. As for interior items, these are gears, various mechanisms, light bulbs, rusty and not very pieces of iron. Color scheme - gray-blue-brown, so to speak

Kamaik
Yes, I also associate with gears, ladies in corsets, rather even leather ones, and with airships :)) Something like this :))

Indy
I believe in scrapbooking steampan To will be closest to mix media, as it involves mixing many styles and using completely different materials. Very characteristic materials for this style, it seems to me, are metal (foil, sheet metal or its imitation), natural (and not so) leather, old newspapers, elements of the Victorian style (sewing, lace, velvet), various small mechanisms (especially , sentries), chains and coarse ropes, wire, keys (but even wrenches!), blueprints, tubes, metal fittings, typewritten inscriptions, letters, metal-effect brads, dirty glass, zippers, buttons and grommets, light bulbs ... Uff what did I miss??

It seems to me that this list can be directly printed out as a memo on materials for steampunk works: )

Indy
AND another notable component steampunk has an emphasis on decadent, deviant feelings, movement with low passions - lust, anger, vanity, greed and envy ...

Winged
Here! There is something in common between steampunk and "anatomical" style. There is an element of such frankness, bordering on cynicism, a share of black humor ... All these mechanical parts of the body in steampunk ... So slightly shocking, provocative, designed to evoke emotions. In scrapbooking, by the way, all this "prosthetics" is rarely used and quite softly. Unplowed field :) And very emotional.
The insides of a person are replaced by the insides of a machine. Those. the same gears are perceived as some kind of inside. And all this, as it were, in a section, i.e. gears, in fact, are what should be hidden. Such is my kind of stable parallel with the anatomical style.

I really like that instead of the insides of the gear, they look nicer than the real insides, so I'm not shocked, rather happy)))

So I never thought about such a parallel, but now I realized that Olya was right. I really like the anatomy, for me it is a very daring style, and steampunk is just akin to it in this regard.

bestia_cat
I I think that this style e anything else like romance in an era of rapidly developing technological progress, hence all these wings, mannequins, etc.

Winged
Initially, steampunk appeared, probably, more as a belief in the progress of technology (well, a share of humor over this progress), and now, on the contrary, it exists as nostalgia for this naive belief!) That is, now no one seriously believes, as at the time of the birth of steampunk, that these mechanisms, gears and steam engines are a symbol of progress and our path to happiness. For us, this is a charming retro and captivating naivety :)

Winged
What about steampunk flash drives, cell phones and laptops?

It seems to me that this has a lot in common with the current fashion for film cameras, instant analog photography and all these photo processing on Instagram (crooked colors and imperfections :))
I mean the same craving for old technologies as the embodiment of some soulfulness and romance. Everything is so digital now :)

Smilla
Ol, it didn’t occur to me - but the truth echoes with steampunk. It seemed to me that this craving for analog photography is just such a fashion for retro and vintage.

Winged
Between themselves, I think, it is not connected, it just has one source - nostalgia for something more "simple and sincere" than "figure".
This, it seems, has been characteristic of man in all ages: the contradiction between the thirst for progress and the illusion of a "golden age", which is certainly in the past. Here's a typical example: people dream of having the latest iPhone, but they don't mind paying a lot of money to make it look like a huge ancient machine with a steampunk twist.

lovecreative
It seems to me that now steampunk is understood as almost any use of a brutal piece of iron in work. Initially, everything was clear: steam is steam in English, and it was about the technology that was in the days of airships-steam locomotives. And now, if a rusty key, a light bulb or a metal flower or a beer cap is at work, then immediately steampunk :-)

Winged
Yeah, I just wrote about this above - both transistors and beer caps :) Transformation in scrapbooking has clearly occurred. First, it is complex mechanisms, steam, pipes - in scrapbooking there are more individual parts (gears, dials, light bulbs, airships). Well, it’s understandable - you can’t glue a steam engine on paper, at most, its drawing - but you want relief :) In this regard, Finnabai r really made a breakthrough IMHO - the illusion of some kind of complex mechanism is achieved, plus this mechanism as a continuation of the body - the most steampunk idea (all sorts of mechanisms on the eyes, arms and legs - like, with the progress of technology it will be possible to tune a person :))

Smilla
Yes, I agree, in scrapbook steampunk is a stylization, and it can be soft, just take a brown-gray scale with metallic accents, images of gears and steampunk is ready. Or complex brutal compositions, like Finnabai r , using all kinds of details, pieces of iron ... I really like such works also because you can organize a bunch of rubbish into something whole and beautiful)) I myself still only dream about it, I put the rubbish in a bag in order to someday make a global collage of everything :)

Winged
Finnabai , however, a little differently - as I see it, this symbolizes the inner versatility and inclusion of a person in the world of technology and all these details surrounding us.

Smilla
Well, Olya sees Finnabai r the inner versatility and inclusion of a person in the world of technology, but I see an attachment to a heap of rubbish for business))) What a simple person I am)))

There would be more, how to put it more delicately ... there are works in the steampunk style, and there are with elements of steampunk. Perhaps this is boring, but if you make a brown cover with a clock for a notebook, then no stretch will let you call it Steam. No, well, really, some gears are not enough! We need such a microscopic legend! Story. Sad, romantic, funny - what's the difference! The important thing is that the work must be imbued with the spirit of that time. It should not just be with traces of time, but be time itself!

Winged
And let's talk about why you (not) like steampunk.
For example, I rather like it. Gears, watch mechanisms - this has always attracted me with terrible force precisely from an aesthetic point of view. There is some mystery in this, there is a riddle. Well, I also like to attach "garbage".
Well, there is some "underside" in this. Something like an anatomical topic, only the anatomy of the non-living :)

Smilla
M not in steampunk, I like the use of different crazy materials, their unexpected combinations. And romance - all these mysterious semi-mechanical people :)

Steampunk is an offbeat and provocative style in scrapbooking. Steampunk is a challenge!

Steampunk steampunk (English steam-steam, punk-punk, or steampunk) is a genre of science fiction, which is based on the technology of steam mechanisms.

Steampunk implies an alternative version of the development of mankind with a pronounced general stylization of the era of Victorian England and the era of early capitalism.
The attributes of this style combine 19th century clothing and household items with retro-futuristic elements.

As a genre, steampunk originated in literature, but gained popularity through comics, anime and cinema. Now steampunk has gained acceptance in scrapbooking as well.

The term "steampunk" itself did not appear until the late 1980s, as an ironic version of the word "cyberpunk". It is believed to have been coined by writer Kevin Jeter to characterize his book Night of the Morlocks.

To truly understand the philosophy of steampunk style, it is better to read books of this genre or watch movies.

Many literary works now attributed to steampunk appeared long before the introduction of the term "steampunk" itself. For example, such as "Worlds of the Imperium" by Keith Laumer in 1962, "Queen Victoria's Bomb" by Ronald W. Clarke in 1967 and "Warlord of the Air" by Michael Moorcock depicted worlds close to the definition of "steampunk".

More examples of representatives of this genre in literature: William Gibson, Scott Westerfeld, Alexey Pekhov, China Mieville, Bruce Sterling and others. The books of these authors will help you immerse yourself in the atmosphere, understand the whole essence of steampunk.
In cinematography, films such as "Van Helsing", "Wild Wild West", "First Men in the Moon", "City of Lost Children", "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" will introduce you to the philosophy of steampunk.

Before doing steampunk work, you need to feel it.

So a new era is coming
machines obedient to us!
So the mechanic of the eyelids rises
golden century...

Characteristic elements of "Steampunk" in scrapbooking:

  • a large number of metal decorations (mandatory) (gears, keys, eyelets, nuts, etc.)
  • an abundance of parts of different mechanisms (clockwork, chains, bolts, etc.)
  • the presence of airships, balloons
  • drawings of intricate machines, drawings of skeletons and steam engines
  • metal lamps and wings
  • the presence of genuine leather
  • gloomy colors (you can accent red)

Steampunk as a style can be divided into separate sub-styles, each of which has its own main theme.

Types of style "Steampunk":

  • clockworkpunk The main theme is clockwork.
  • Teslapunk The main theme is electricity.
  • Timepunk The main theme is time and time travel.
  • Sailpunk Main theme: aeronautics.
  • Fantasysteampunk Main theme: any of the above in the fantasy world.
  • spaceshippunk Main theme: space.
  • Shebbysteampunk. Main Theme: Any of the above.

The Steampunk style can be called perhaps the most difficult in scrapbooking.
And before you create in this style, you should catch the general mood of the steampunk style.

Mysterious and fantastic steampunk style became a separate direction in scrapbooking. Since it deserves attention, it is worth looking into it.

Before describing the characteristics of the style, I want to show a few illustrations to make it clear what I'm talking about.

Characteristics of the steampunk style

These images can be described in words: vintage, industrial, technical, fantastic. The steampunk style reflects the era of the 19th century. It is either an English Victorian style or an American Wild West style.

In accordance with the times, the achievements of the industrial era play a big role: steam engines, airships, steam locomotives, dreadnoughts. Hence the name of the style - steam (English) means "steam".

Steampunk characters wear 19th century costumes. For ladies: travel suit, corset, puffy skirt, hat. For gentlemen: three-piece suit, aviator suit, cane, hat.

()

The colors are usually dark. Shades of brown predominate. The presence of metal is mandatory: aged copper, bronze. Alter objects may also contain leather, glass.

()

Additional elements: balloon, airship, pilot's goggles, wings, gears, pocket watch, metal pipes, mechanisms, steam locomotive, etc.

Steampunk craft supplies

Special collections in the steampunk style were produced by some manufacturers: Graphic 45, Prima, Tim Holtz, LaBlanche. Below is a small selection of materials with which it is easy to create works in the steampunk style.

Steampunk scrapbook examples

You have already seen the notebook with gears. Be sure to check out Anna Finnabair's panels.

()

And here are some more pages with natural metal elements.

()

()

But the steampunk style does not have to be expressed by means of mixed media. You can do the work using classic scrapbooking paper.

I haven't worked in a pure steampunk direction yet, but I have a few works that come close to it.
