How to integrate disparate fragmentary knowledge and local understanding into a single historical panorama? The Memorial St. Petersburg Research and Information Center has been implementing the idea of creating a Virtual Gulag Museum for the fifth year.
We consider this project as a set of various museum and exhibition initiatives united in a single virtual space for comparison and search for ways of integration, in such a way that the regional and author's specificity would not be lost, but entered into a single whole as part of it.
The ultimate goal of the project is the creation of a Virtual Museum that represents both the general picture of the history of terror and the current state of the memory of it, in its material embodiment. The "non-museum" memory of terror is also an integral part of this picture, and in our collection it is represented by two separate components : "Traces of the Gulag" - signs of the past in the landscape and anthropogenic environment surrounding us, and "Necropolis of terror" - hundreds of preserved, semi-preserved or almost disappeared from the face of the earth burial places of terror victims.
The next stage of our project will be the construction of a real virtual museum based on the collected collection - with a multimedia presentation of exhibits, with detailed museum documentation, with a reference apparatus, including thematic and other rubricators, indexes, virtual card indexes, with thematic expositions, temporary and permanent exhibitions, with a developed virtual tour system.

4. British Museum
The collection of the British Museum has more than eight million objects. Today, the world-famous museum from London has introduced the ability to view online some of its exhibits, such as "Kenga: textiles from Africa" and "Objects from the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum". In partnership with the Google Cultural Institute, the British Museum offers virtual tours using Google Street View technology.
5. National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution
