Baguette decoration of paintings. Framed painting principles

10.07.2019

What fun it is to color pictures by numbers! You can feel like a real artist, even if you don’t know how to draw at all. Therefore, others will surely follow the first. But the paintings lying on the shelf, rolled up into a tube, cannot become either a decoration of the house or an object for joy. You need to frame them and hang them on the wall.

How can you make a picture?

In general, there are three types of design for paintings:

 1. just fix it on a stretcher without any frame;
 2. can be issued in a baguette;
 3. can be issued in a passepartout.

Painting on a stretcher without a frame looks good only if you hang it in a modern interior. To put it bluntly - without a frame, the picture is a little underformed. But some like it - you have to admit it.

Baguette- This is a classic design of the picture. These frames are made of wood or plastic and can sound both modern and vintage, depending on the type of baguette.

Passepartout- This is a wide frame made of cardboard, white or colored. It can give the picture a particular mood, depending on the color and width.

Often in a frame are combined at the same time baguette and passepartout. This looks very interesting:

Where to find a frame that fits the size and at the same time elegantly complements the picture? The ideal option is a frame to order.

Stretching the picture on a stretcher

Suppose you decide to go the easy way and stretch the painting on a stretcher, leaving it without a frame. How to do it?

Prepare materials:

 • stretcher;
 • spray;
 • hammer;
 • stapler for furniture;
 • staples.

Lay the picture face down, let it lie down, straighten up. If she does not want to straighten up, you can slightly moisten her with a spray bottle.

When the canvas straightens out, place it on a stretcher. Align. Start fastening from the middle of either side.

After securing one side, stretch the canvas, and grab the opposite. Pin both sides carefully, being careful not to warp the canvas.

Now fasten the other two sides.

That's all.

Making a picture in a baguette

Maybe you prefer the classic version - it fits most interiors of modern apartments and houses. How to frame a picture by numbers in this case?

You will need:

 • frame;
 • canvas staples.
 1. First, stretch the canvas on a stretcher, as you already know how.
 2. Turn the frame face down. Find out where the frame has the top and bottom. Put the picture on a stretcher in it - also face down.
 3. Connect the frame and subframe with brackets.

If your baguette is not classic, but the simplest one (a frame imitating a baguette), the technology is slightly different. How to arrange a picture by numbers in a frame with a substrate and glass? Not difficult at all!

 1. Turn the frame over, remove the backing.
 2. Lay the picture on the glass, align it. Trim the edges slightly if needed.
 3. Cover with a substrate, fix the fasteners.

That's all!

Making a picture in a passe-partout

Making a picture in a passe-partout is no different from decorating in a baguette. Except one. If you wish and skill, you can make a passe-partout with your own hands!

How to make a picture frame by numbers? You will need for this:

 • thick cardboard, thin plywood or a piece of hardboard;
 • construction pistol;
 • scrapbooking paper or colored card.

From cardboard, hardboard or plywood, we will make a substrate. The substrate should be larger than the picture in order to get a wide border.

We fix the picture on it with the help of a construction gun.

On top of the picture on the substrate, put a wide frame made of scrapbooking paper or colored cardboard.

Now just wait for it to dry, and you will have a wonderfully decorated picture.

Painting protection by numbers

Paintings by numbers are painted with paints that can leak if water gets on them. To prevent your creation from spoiling, it can be protected. But how can you protect painted pictures by numbers?

One of the ways we have already mentioned in passing is glass on a frame. Glass reliably protects during normal use, and even when cleaning. There is only one way to damage a picture under glass - to dip it in water.

If you do not exclude such an option, there is another way to protect the picture - this is varnish. Lacquer cover the picture after it is all painted and already dried.

Any art poster, photograph, watercolor or drawing made with glass can be fixed with clamps or a press-on pendant can be installed on the back. For painting, making a gallery stretch on a stretcher is an increasingly less expensive way of decorating works without a frame, designed for temporary use.

Trying to save money without spending money on a baguette, we miss the opportunity to create not only a clear stylistic and color echo of our work with furniture and interiors, unfortunately, we lose the chance to make an emotionally significant thing out of a child’s photo or a simple embroidery, a memory of ourselves, a pleasant event in our life.

Registration of pictures in a baguette

Unframed canvases lose the feeling of solemnity and presentability, the invisible border of another world, the world created by the artist, disappears.

Registration in a baguette highlights the dignity and emphasizes the beauty of the picture. In the circles of artists back in the 19th century, it was accepted that painting without a frame in a frame should never be shown to the public, since it is the framing of paintings that is necessary to complete all the work in order to give it a finished look.

Our framing workshop, along with ready-made works, also offers services for framing your photographs, embroideries, framing mirrors or bulky objects into a baguette. Long-term and successful experience of our design studios allows us to professionally fulfill any order for decoration.

The main rule in the design is the selection of a baguette to the picture, but ideally, you should take into account the combination of the image, the frame and the surrounding interior. The picture should be in harmony not only with the ornament or texture of the baguette, but also fit into the design of the room itself. Thus, there are 3 components that must be considered when choosing a design for a picture:

 • room interior
 • baguette decoration
 • the picture in the picture

It must always be remembered that the main element is, of course, the picture, and the frame serves to connect the picture with the interior. Here are some tips to help you choose the right frame for your painting:

 • The tonality of the baguette and the image in the picture - the use of a baguette with warm shades is justified only for a picture in warm colors and vice versa - the cold tonality in the picture implies the design of cold shades with a baguette.
 • The size of the picture and the width of the baguette - a wide baguette is well suited for small-sized paintings, and a large picture will look great in a narrow frame.
 • The color scheme of the image and the frame - the baguette and the picture should be combined in color, that is, the color of the baguette should not match the dominant color of the picture itself. It is necessary to achieve a smooth transition from the image of the picture to the baguette. However, it is worth noting that almost any picture will look great with a baguette in the color of a living tree.
 • The style of writing a picture - the frame should not focus on itself, so avant-garde painting is not framed in a classic baguette with stucco molding (stucco molding is a relief decoration).

Other framing

In addition to the usual framing work on the design of paintings, mirrors, photographs and embroidery in a baguette, our craftsmen carry out framing of diplomas, children's drawings and even the design of three-dimensional objects. Volumetric items include collectibles: dolls, masks, weapons, medals, coins, etc. The main principle is the selection of a baguette of the desired depth, which creates the effect of a "box". This approach helps to place all the work, including additional components: passe-partout, glass, substrate, backdrop.

1.The baguette and the picture should harmoniously complement each other. The frame is matched to the painting, not to the interior. Real works of art have a certain artistic value and energy, live their own lives for a long time, regardless of the walls surrounding them. It makes sense to choose frames for illustrations, posters, postcards in accordance with the style of the interior.
2. The baguette should be combined with the picture in color. Paintings in warm colors are framed in a baguette of warm colors, paintings in cold colors - in a baguette of cold colors. The color of the baguette should be half a tone darker or lighter than the main color in the picture, or match some secondary color of the image. Frames in the color of natural wood or dark bronze are suitable for almost any painting.
3.The style, ornament or texture of the baguette should repeat the style of the picture. Graceful lines of graphics fit strict frames without complex decor. Modern impasto painting will look better in modern frames. Realism - in the classical. Avant-garde works - in modern glossy ones.
4. The width of the baguette is proportional to the size of the picture. But there are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes large decorative canvases are specially designed with a narrow baguette, giving the image to the viewer and focusing his attention on the plane of the work. For small paintings, the opposite spectacular technique is used, placing them in a wide baguette so that the area of the frame is larger than the area of the picture. Thus, they emphasize the value or originality of the work, focusing the viewer's eye in the center.
5. We must not forget about the technical features of the baguette profile. Pictures on thick stretchers can protrude significantly on the inside from the "quadruple" recess in the frame. In this case, the subframe on the wall may be too visible when viewed from the side. You should also take into account the depth of the baguette profile and the lighting of the picture, since with side light, deep frames cast significant shadows on the image.

Do you still think that the baguette in the interior serves only to frame the pictures on the walls? We will prove that the possibilities of a baguette are much wider.

Origin

Initially, this was the name of a wooden carved plank intended for the manufacture of frames and cornices. Gradually, the scope of the concept became wider, now moldings, plinths, fillets, platbands are called decorative moldings, with its help they organize space, place accents, decorate walls, ceilings, openings and niches.

Types of baguette

Thanks to modern technologies in production, the possibilities of using a baguette are expanding. Now polyurethane molding is difficult to distinguish from baroque gypsum stucco moldings, the unreal shine of the aluminum profile evokes thoughts of spaceships, light plastic skirting boards imitate richly gilded frames.

Planks are made of wood, plastic, aluminum. Each material has features that should be considered when planning the design of ceilings and walls.

Wooden baguette - a traditional and understandable solution. Until now, the best material for framing paintings has not been invented. Especially if the frames are made by hand and keep the positive energy of the master. Unfortunately, for mass production, this is a complex, capricious material in processing and storage. Although its use is justified in country and Provence style interiors.

Gypsum baguettes fit perfectly into classic or luxurious baroque interiors. They emphasize the respectability and solidity of the house. It is difficult to work with gypsum, it is fragile, heavy, afraid of moisture. Therefore, more and more consumers prefer the use of decor made of polyurethane and plastic.

Polyurethane moldings are quite light, flexible and durable. Therefore, in addition to walls and ceilings, they are used in the design of curved structures. Due to their low weight, they can be glued only from one edge, for example, to the wall when installing stretch ceilings and lighting cornices. Manufacturers are constantly releasing new collections, expanding their range, trying to match fashion trends.

plastic baguettes in the interior they are used in the construction of stretch ceilings and plasterboard structures. Outwardly, they are plinths with grooves for locks, most often white. There is a decorative baguette on sale that imitates the pattern of wood or marble. Having the skills to work with paints, you can apply a pattern or paint the baseboards yourself.

aluminum profile used in the installation of stretch ceilings. Planks are easy to bend, follow the contours of a curvilinear structure. The possibilities of using aluminum are quite diverse. For example, in high-tech style, metallic gloss serves as a worthy frame for a poster, mirror, photograph.

Beware: Styrofoam baguettes are cheap and easy to use. But do not be fooled by their pretty appearance, because the material tends to crumble, the work will look cheap and untidy.

Summing up, we note: the most natural baguette is made of wood and gypsum, the most durable is made of aluminum, the cheapest is made of foam.

Ceiling decoration

The ceiling baguette has a double task: on the one hand, it masks the seam between the wall and the ceiling, on the other hand, it belongs to the decorative elements, decorates the room. Installing it is simple. For installation, a special glue is used, which is applied to the baguette and the pasted surface of the walls. For the convenience of consumers, corner models are produced so that you do not have to think about how to cut the corner correctly.

A modern solution: a ceiling plinth with a thickened bottom and a special groove is glued at a distance of 20 cm from the ceiling. An LED strip is placed on top along the perimeter of the walls. An interesting ceiling lighting effect is created.

Wall design

In the design of the walls, the baguette is many-sided and varied. It highlights a certain place on the wall, attracts the attention of the audience. For example, a collage of family photos or an antique cuckoo clock.

In another case, it zones the space, smoothes the boundaries between wallpapers of different patterns. The joint becomes invisible, and the space is more harmonious.

You can install a contrast baguette around the perimeter of the niche. This design will draw attention to the object. To make the niche look mysterious and romantic, frame its inside, add lighting, complement the composition with a light, elegant curtain.

Pictures and posters on the walls no longer surprise anyone. Designers went further, the paintings were removed, leaving only the frame. Here it is, the highlight: the baguette in the interior acts as a frame. It is often made of expensive exquisite materials. Depending on the style of the room, baguettes made of wood, polyurethane, gypsum or aluminum act as a frame on the wall.

Advice! Two or three A3 size frames located at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other will look harmoniously on the wall.

Framing small items

Mirrors, paintings, engravings, posters, tapestries, photographs... Everything becomes the object of the designer's close attention. Proper use turns these elements into interior highlights. A decorative baguette gives them a new sound, organically fits into the space.

Tip: even a simple rectangular mirror will become modern and attractive in a new baguette frame. Cut the strips of the required length, glue them around the perimeter. The interior will sparkle with new colors!

The finishing touch

 • A narrow ceiling molding will visually increase the height of the walls, will make the ceiling higher, vertical thin lines will give the room severity, and horizontal ones will add dynamics. Wide options are suitable for large rooms, they will “weight” a small room, visually it will seem cramped.

 • Want to pick up a baguette with a relief- be guided by the general style of the interior, color, texture solutions. Remember that white color is universal, it is in harmony with all shades. If you think that the design should be of a different color, experiment and paint the baguette before starting work.

 • Competently combine style in interior design, measure, fantasy. Then you will not have to regret the time, effort and money spent. The result will please you for many years.

Apartment design with a baguette (2 videos)

With the wrong frame, even the most beloved work can cause negative emotions and irritation.

It is in order to avoid this that we present some rules for the design of works in a frame, under which you will be able to choose the appropriate option yourself or take an informed part in the discussion.

Painting decoration should be based on the main principle - the baguette is selected to the picture itself, and not to the furniture of your apartment or to the interior. Otherwise, after the repair, you will need to go back to baguette workshop and order new picture frames.

The baguette frame and the picture should complement each other, enhance the impression, and not compete. This is achieved if the baguette is combined in color with the picture, if the texture of the baguette repeats or complements any details of the picture, and if the picture flows smoothly into the baguette frame.

And most importantly framed picture should please you.

Baguette selection

 • Pictures where warm tones are used are framed in a baguette of warm shades and vice versa, paintings of cold tones are framed in a baguette of cold shades.
 • The picture looks inexpressive if the frame falls exactly into the tone of the work. The color of the selected baguette should be half a tone lighter or darker than the main color of the picture.
 • For bright avant-garde painting, sometimes a very interesting artistic decision is a play on the contrast between the tone of the picture and the color of the baguette. But even here you should not change your sense of proportion and taste.
 • Pictures, where simple lines of form predominate, are framed in a not too intricate baguette.
 • A classic natural wood color baguette fits almost most paintings.
 • It is important to remember the style in which the work is performed. Avant-garde painting is usually not framed in a wide classic gilded baguette with a large number of monograms and stucco, and a classical-style painting is not framed in a modern glossy frame.
 • As a rule, a wide baguette is selected for a large picture, and a narrow baguette for a small one. However, in some cases, you can play with the width, trying to visually "increase" the size of a small picture so that the total area of the framing frame is larger than the area of the picture. The result can be a very interesting and unusually designed image. You can try to do the opposite, choosing a thin and narrow frame for a wide and bulky picture, as if pulling it together.
 • When decorating a picture in a baguette, it must be remembered that the baguette only plays the role of a link between the picture and the interior, and the main role still belongs to the picture.

Passe-partout selection

 • It is important to remember that the passe-partout is only assigned the role of a link between the picture, the frame and the interior.
 • When choosing a passe-partout, you should give preference to those shades that are secondary in the work or coincide with the background color.
 • Usually the best option when choosing a mat is a mat that is slightly darker in color than the lightest tone of the picture being framed.
 • The frame should not merge in tone / color with the selected mat.
 • For a painting that depicts movement, it is better to choose a wide passe-partout, especially if the perspective of the painting goes beyond the frame.
 • Most often, the passe-partout is made 5-7 cm wide in each direction.
 • The bottom margin of the passe-partout should be wider than the right, left and top margins.
 • If the picture is vertical, then the top margin is made wider than the sides, and if the picture is horizontal, then the right and left margins should be wider than the top.
 • For a square picture, the left, right and top margins are the same, and the bottom is wider.
 • The wide brim of the passe-partout look impressive. Do not be afraid to make margins of 10 - 12 cm. This is especially true for small jobs. As a rule, the total area of the fields of the passe-partout is made no less, often more, than the area of the picture being drawn up.
 • To outline the additional space of the image and create a visual contrast between the edge of the mat and the image, it is recommended to use an edging (slip).
 • The passe-partout should not focus on itself, but on the contrary, emphasize the work, create “depth”. That is why, try to avoid bright saturated tones when choosing the main mat. Bright shades, well-chosen in tone, look great in combination with several layers of passe-partout.
 • We advise you to use a multi-layer passe-partout. The combination of several shades creates a stunning effect of depth and advantageously emphasizes the picture.
 • In the design with a multi-layer passe-partout, the “tunnel” principle is often used, when the top layer is lighter than the bottom ones.
 • Additional depth of design can be obtained using a "deep" passe-partout (bevel).
