Read a novel from the darkness of ages. The book "Out of the Dark Ages"

01.07.2023

Idris Bazorkin collected material for the book for many years, after which he began writing the novel. The process took 152 days. During the day, Bazorkin wrote a novel, and in the evening he read it to his relatives and they discussed it. If they didn’t like something, then Bazorkin redid such episodes.

After the novel was published, it became very popular. The novel was hard to come by and some even stole books from each other.

The action of the novel begins in the 60s of the XIX century, and in the first five chapters does not go beyond the mountainous Ingushetia. In chapters 6-9, the actions go beyond the borders of Ingushetia and unfold over a wide field: Vladikavkaz, Petrograd, Prussia, etc. Although there are few historical figures in the novel (Abrek Zelimkhan, Mussa Kundukhov, Georgy Tsagolov, Sergey Kirov and a few more), “ From the darkness of centuries” is perceived as a historical novel. Bazorkin, in his characteristic style, describes in detail the life, temper, customs, rituals of the period when the majority of the Ingush people still adhered to paganism. Characteristic in this context are the images of the priest Elmurza and Mullah Hasan-Khadzhi. Many critics in the description of pagan rites saw the author's admiration for them, almost their idealization. Others explained this by the author's desire for authenticity in depicting these events. The central figure of the novel is Kaloy. Through the attitude towards him and his attitude towards others, the significance of most of the characters in the novel is revealed, their character is shown.

The writer planned to write a sequel to the novel. According to his plan, the epic novel was to consist of three books: the first - "From the darkness of centuries" - ends in 1918; the second, under the code name "Inhabitants of the Towers", was supposed to end on the events of 1941, and the third - "The Secret of Olgetta's Castle" - until 1958, when the Ingush returned from exile.

For the second and third books, blanks were already prepared, the main storylines were outlined, characteristics and some dialogues were written. The writer published two chapters of the second book of the novel in 1982 in the Grozny Worker newspaper, under the title "Great Burning". One of the plots of these chapters is the dialogue between Vladimir Lenin and Magomed Yandarov, who was heading to the North Caucasus as the Extraordinary Commissar of the South of Russia (later he was replaced by G.K. Ordzhonikidze). To depict the image of the leader of the revolution, it was necessary to obtain special permission from the party leadership. Lenin's meeting with Yandarov was not documented, although Bazorkin logically assumed that it took place. Thus, the party propaganda check slowed down work on the continuation of the novel. The story with the first chapters from the continuation of the novel made it clear to the writer that further work on it would be associated with even greater censorship: after all, he had to cover the forbidden pages of the history of the Civil War, collectivization, deportation of peoples during the Second World War. Therefore, the author decided not to write a continuation of the novel until better times.

During the Ossetian-Ingush ethnic conflict in the Prigorodny district of North Ossetia and in Vladikavkaz in October-November 1992, the writer was taken hostage by representatives of the North Ossetian gangs, and personal property, including the manuscript of the continuation of the epic novel, was taken out by unidentified persons . According to neighbors, it is known that four people in civilian clothes, accompanied by a platoon (12 people) of fully equipped armed fighters, who arrived at the house where Idris Bazorkin lived in a car and a UAZ military minibus, took out and took away from the writer’s apartment several large cardboard boxes full of papers. The fate of the manuscripts is still unknown.

“This book is not an encyclopedia of the life of the Ingush people over the past century. It will talk about the formation of personality, about the struggle of characters in the context of significant historical events, about the people who created this story.

Chapter first

The setting sun has whitened the rocks of Tsey-Loma, which wall around tiny terraces of arable land. In the middle of these lands rises a stone block. Hundreds, and perhaps thousands of years ago, it broke away from the mountain and froze here, halfway to the abyss, crushing an entire mountain field under it. Songs were written about her in the old days. But time left people only the legend that this rock in anger brought down the great sledge Seska-Solsa on his enemies. So it is called - the rock of Seska Solsa.

The month of the cuckoo was coming to an end, and the highlanders were preparing for field work. Autumn showers, winter snow landslides cause stones on arable land and meadows. Without removing them, you can neither plow nor mow. And for the third day now, Dawley has been walking up the slope and dragging the stones to the edge of the field, where, over the centuries, whole mounds have grown from such stones. When it is a long way to the mound, Dawley lays stones on the edge of the boundary, leveling the low side of the terrace. The third day she is at work alone, because the meat harvested in the fall has run out, barley flour is running out and her husband has gone into the blue rocks, to the snowy peaks, to get a tour or a chamois.

Dawley was tired, the stones scratched her hands. My back hurts, and there is still so much work ahead! They have to fertilize their plots this year. For three years, Dawley had collected manure, and now she had to carry it in baskets and scatter it on arable land. Otherwise, the earth will not give birth.

All this was normal for her. But now Dawley was expecting a baby. Sometimes the work fell out of hand. She was afraid to pick up large stones from the ground. After all, the gods have already taken two children to themselves. The husband reproached for the fact that there is no heir.

Five years ago, when the tsar ordered the Ingush to be driven out of their flat auls back into the mountains, Dowley, along with others, came here to these grandfather's bare towers. The house and everything that they had remained in the village of Angusht, surrounded by green gardens. And here I had to lift not only manure, but also earth onto the fields. There was no one to look after the children. In the first year, they barely harvested what they sowed. Winter in the tower, like in a stone bag, then - hunger ... The children weakened. And when in the spring they had to get food for themselves in the forest, there are different herbs, they withered and died one by one.

Since then, Dawley has had no children. Her husband, who became a Muslim when he was a child, somehow brought her water heaped from the mullah, bought an amulet, but nothing helped. The old women explained this by the fact that the “change of life” spoiled her, and advised her to turn to the help of local gods. Doley obeyed. She secretly went to the village of Kek, where in front of the fertility temple of the divine Tusholi stood a stone pillar - a sign of male strength. She pushed a triangular cake with the image of a cross into the window of the temple and lit a home-made candle in a niche, then, falling on her knees in front of a stone statue, showed him her bare chest and begged to send children. And here is the fruit of her prayer, her hope lives in her heart.

And this most precious asset of the Ingush is being cruelly attacked by the tsar's associates, mercilessly driving the peasants from the land of their fathers and taking away all their few property. Personally, being an eyewitness and participant in most of the events of that era, Idris Bazorkin describes with great skill the features of life, life, traditions and customs of the Ingush people, which gives the story an unforgettable national flavor.
