The trees depicted in the background seem to be woven from a huge number of stained-glass windows flickering with greenish hues. In 1935, Gerasimov went to rest and retire for creativity to his homeland in the city of Kozlov. This is where the much-loved painting was created.

The painting "After the Rain" was painted spontaneously, literally in one breath. However, it is not a momentary creation. The artist has been preparing himself for the creation of this work for a long time. He made sketches from nature of foliage, grass and various objects wet from the rain. Gerasimov's acquaintances admitted that this experience was especially good for him.

Sister Gerasimova in her memoirs described the process of creating a picture: that day a heavy summer rain began. After him, everything around looked especially picturesque and fresh - the water, shimmering with colors in the sun, sparkled on the floor of the veranda, foliage and paths; above the trees was a cloudless, rain-washed sky.

Delighted by the view that opened, the master grabbed the palette and stood at the easel. In a matter of hours, he painted a most picturesque canvas, which became one of his most successful creations. After exhibiting the picture at various opening days along with his other works, Gerasimov noted with some surprise that it was she who enjoyed special attention from the audience.

Why is this light poetic work so attractive to the average viewer? The painting depicts at first glance an ordinary landscape - a corner of a veranda with carved railings and a small bench along them.

On the right, slightly disturbing the compositional balance, the artist placed an old table and a vase of flowers. On the left plan we see the floor, as well as the bench and the railing of the veranda. Drops of water glitter and shimmer on all the objects depicted. Just beyond the veranda, a garden is visible, wet from a recent downpour.

The colors in the picture are crystal clear and major - the juicy green of wet foliage, the dark bronze of wet wood, the sky blue reflected in the puddles spilled on the floor of the veranda. A separate color accent is a bouquet of flowers in a vase - an intense pink color is successfully combined with green and white strokes.

When working on the painting, Gerasimov used a highly refined technique of reflexes. This pictorial technique involves careful study of small but important details of the composition.

In the case of the painting “After the Rain”, the key points, thanks to which a special state of freshness and purity is achieved, are reflections of light and reflections: juicy green strokes on the walls of the veranda are reflections of green foliage; the pink and blue spots on the table are reflections left on a wet surface by a bouquet of flowers.

The entire painting is as if permeated with intricate interlacings of light and shadow. At the same time, the shadow areas do not cause an oppressive feeling in the viewer, since they are made in many colors and colorfully. There are a lot of silver and mother-of-pearl shades in the picture - in this way the artist conveys numerous sun glare on wet foliage and wet surfaces of objects. While working on creating the pictorial effect of wet surfaces, the artist applied the glazing technique. In the process of using this technique, the paint is applied to the canvas in several layers. The first stroke is the main one, the subsequent ones are light translucent strokes. As a result, the surfaces depicted appear shiny, as if varnished. This is especially noticeable when considering the fragments of the picture, which depict sections of the plank floor, a bench, a table top.

By 1935, having painted many portraits of V. I. Lenin, I. V. Stalin and other Soviet leaders, A. M. Gerasimov advanced to the major masters of socialist realism. Tired of the struggle for official recognition and success, he went to rest in his native and beloved city of Kozlov. This is where the "Wet Terrace" was created.

The artist's sister recalled how the painting was painted. Her brother was literally shocked by the sight of their garden after one unusually heavy rain. “Nature was fragrant with freshness. The water lay in a whole layer on the foliage, on the floor of the gazebo, on the bench and sparkled, creating an extraordinary picturesque chord. And then, behind the trees, the sky cleared and whitened.

Mitya, rather a palette! - Alexander shouted to his assistant Dmitry Rodionovich Panin. The picture, which my brother called "Wet Terrace", arose with lightning speed - it was written within three hours. Our modest garden arbor with a corner of the garden received a poetic expression under the brush of my brother.

At the same time, the picture that arose spontaneously was not painted by chance. The picturesque motif of nature refreshed by rain attracted the artist during his studies at the School of Painting. He succeeded in wet objects, roofs, roads, grass. Alexander Gerasimov, perhaps without knowing it himself, went to this picture for many years and secretly wanted to see with his own eyes what we now see on the canvas. Otherwise, he could simply not pay attention to the rain-drenched terrace.

There is no tension in the picture, there are no rewritten pieces and an invented plot. It is indeed written in one breath, as fresh as the breath of green foliage washed by rain. The image captivates with spontaneity, it shows the lightness of the artist's feelings.

The artistic effect of the painting was largely predetermined by the high painting technique built on reflexes. “Juicy reflections of garden greens lay on the terrace, pinkish, blue ones on the wet surface of the table. The shadows are colorful, even multicolored. Reflections on the boards covered with moisture cast silver. The artist used glazes, applying new layers of paint over the dried layer - translucent and transparent, like varnish. On the contrary, some details, such as garden flowers, are written pasty, emphasized with textured strokes. A major, elevated note is brought into the picture by backlighting, the reception of lighting from behind, at point-blank range, tree crowns somewhat reminiscent of flickering stained-glass windows ”(Kuptsov I. In Russian painting of the Soviet period, there are few works where the state of nature would be so expressively conveyed. I believe that this is the best picture of A. M. Gerasimov. The artist lived a long life, painted many paintings on various subjects, for which he received many awards and prizes, but at the end of the journey, looking back at the past, he considered this work to be the most significant.

Despite the fact that the weather, when the author painted the picture, has not yet completely improved, it is all filled with light, bright brilliance, amazing purity of nature washed by the summer rain. The artist himself was so delighted with the beauty of the refreshed nature that opened up to him that he wrote this wonderful work literally in one breath, without modifications or corrections.

The picture shows a terrace with simple furniture and a wooden floor. In the background you can see a garden with some buildings. It's nice to think that someone cut the flowers, which smell like this because of the fresh air, and put them in a transparent glass jar. Now drops of rain, and a gentle wind tousled them. And tender petals are scattered on the table. This adds a certain romantic note to the picture, brings fresh colors to its description. My fantasy immediately adds what happened before the rain, and what will happen, as soon as the final touch on the finished picture is done.

I suppose that the people in the garden and on the terrace had fun until large drops predicted rain for them, and then they ran into the house with loud laughter and jokes. They began to look out the windows to see if the water flows would end. And the rain kept pouring and pouring. But in an instant, the drops began to fall quieter, less often, smaller. Rain stopped! There was a revival in the house, everyone started talking about future plans. And only the unfailing romantic saw the perfect picture worth capturing. He rushed for brushes and paints. Over time, the rest understood his intentions, calmed down and began to enjoy, almost without breathing, watching the skillful movements of the brush of the great artist. No one expected that this day would end with a masterpiece!

Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov is a famous Russian painter. He was born on July 31, 1881 in the town of Kozlov, into a merchant family. The artist spent his childhood and youth in this provincial town, surrounded by Russian nature. The young man knew how to see beauty in the simplest everyday things. And this became the basis of many of his future works.

Only a truly talented artist can notice the most inconspicuous, at first glance, details of the environment. We see it in his paintings. And we can't help but admire it.

In his youth, the artist was attracted by impressionism. But then he became an adherent of socialist realism, a new artistic direction. Gerasimov painted portraits of political leaders of that time - Lenin, Voroshilov, Stalin and other Soviet leaders. The artist was considered a recognized master of socialist realism, he was Stalin's personal artist. Gerasimov's works were considered canonical at that time.

However, Alexander Mikhailovich himself, already in the mid-thirties, was tired of the constant desire for official recognition. And he decides to go on vacation to his hometown of Kozlov. It was then that the artist created an amazing painting “After the Rain”.

This work is strikingly different from all the paintings that were created by the artist. He himself believed that this is the best work of all that he created in his life.

The sister of Alexander Mikhailovich recalled that the artist literally shook the garden after the rain. It was an amazing sight that Gerasimov definitely wanted to capture on canvas. “Nature was fragrant with freshness. The picture was painted very quickly, in a few hours. This testifies to how great the artist's admiration for the amazing beauty of nature was.

In fact, the creation of this picture was not accidental. Even in his youth, Gerasimov was attracted by the motive of nature after the rain.
