The best beaches on Koh Samui? Are you seriously?! There are more than ten of them, and each has its own unique appearance, character and temper. If you want - and in front of you are kilometers of snow-white sand powder in the shade of palm trees. Or maybe you like rocky shores, from where you can admire schools of fish in crystal pools? .. So let's choose the best beach for you on Koh Samui!

I will not mention anything about Chaweng, since I have already described it earlier. You can get acquainted with its beauties in the article

Lamai beach on Koh Samui

The central part of Lamai is most chosen by tourists - close to numerous shops, cafes, massage parlors and water activities. Usually it is crowded here, but not as noisy as, say, in Chaweng. Umbrellas and sun loungers are included. As statistics show, this is one of the most.

Bophut beach on Koh Samui

Bophut located near the airport. Low-flying planes always cause a storm of delight among the kids. True, they appear quite rarely and, in general, do not really distract from the rest. The bay is well protected from waves, but the depth of the sea is decent. Nearby are a fishing pier, as well as a temple complex known as the Big Buddha. By the way, in Phuket there is something similar -.

There are indescribable sunsets on Bophut. But for swimming, this is probably not the best option on Koh Samui. The water here is often slightly cloudy, with a lot of algae and. The sand is rather large, dark in color. Nevertheless, Bophut is quite crowded Among other things, there are many sellers of goodies, swimwear and jewelry. To the north, 13 kilometers from the beach, there is no less beautiful, popular for its paradise beaches.

In terms of recreation and entertainment, infrastructure on Maenam pretty well developed. The coastline is always clean. Excellent landscapes. The quality of water can slightly pump up - due to several rivers flowing into the sea nearby, the bottom of the sea is silted up in places.

Maenam has a reputation as one of the most affordable areas to live in. This place is well suited for lovers of peace and quiet.

Not far from Chomgmon there is a small island of Fan Noi, which can be reached by wade. On the periphery of the beach, it is quite easy to retire, but closer to the central part, they are already riding bananas and jet skis with might and main, and even learning how to drive yachts.

The sea in this part of Koh Samui is relatively calm, and the sand is pleasing to both the eye and the feet. Especially in the northern part. Chongmon will only disappoint those who prefer nightlife to picturesque nature.

In this post I will tell you about the beaches of Koh Samui, and I will also try to describe the pros and cons of each, I will show a lot of photos and videos, well, at the end of the article, I will determine the best beach in koh samui in my opinion.

It's no secret that before traveling to another country for a beach holiday, we pay great attention to the hotel and the beach near it. After all, our decision on where to stay depends on it. Today I will try to tell you about my impressions of the beaches of Koh Samui.

My decision to visit Koh Samui was born spontaneously, so I didn't have time to study information, read books, etc. I did not have, and desires the same. This is not always good, but in my case, lately, it turns out that way. It is interesting for me to study everything on the spot and discover some new places for myself.

But for my readers, I do not advise you to practice this method if you are limited in time and you do not know the country well. It is better to choose proven routes, as well as make decisions depending on the advice and feedback from people who have already visited these places. After all, the only way you can choose what you like and not be disappointed by the choice made.

In this article, I will try to help you choose the best beach on Koh Samui.

As I wrote above, there are many beaches here, but let's be more specific.

Here is a list of all the beaches on the island:

  1. Bo Phut
  2. Samrong Bay
  3. Tong Son Bay
  4. Choeng Mon
  5. Chaweng
  6. Chaweng Noi Bay
  7. Laem Nam Beach
  8. Lamai
  9. Hua Thanon
  10. Beach (Nathien Natien Beach)
  11. Bang Kao
  12. Thong Tanote Beach
  13. Pang Ka Bay
  14. Taling Ngam
  15. Tong Yang
  16. Nathon
  17. Bang Por
  18. Mae Nam

The list is impressive, isn't it?! But despite this abundance of beaches, some of them are not at all suitable for swimming, somewhere very shallow, somewhere there are a lot of stones and corals, and somewhere there is a pier or just dirty. Let's take a closer look at those that I managed to visit with photos, videos and descriptions.

Bo Phut area

Bo Phut area or Fisherman Village is one of the three most popular areas on the island. Here, mostly couples, as well as newlyweds, have a rest. It seemed to me that this is one of the most expensive areas of Koh Samui. Judging by the prices of hotels, food, hookah.

Local restaurants each have their own style, they look very healthy.

There is almost no nightlife here, most of the establishments close around 00:00, but there is a good place with great music, cocktails and hookah. If you stand facing the sea, near the wooden pier, then this place will be on the left, about 700-900 meters from it.

There are almost no young people in this area, mostly foreign couples of age. By itself, Bo Phut seemed to me a quiet place. Not for those who like fun and parties.

Bo Phut beach

Since the area itself is quite large, accordingly, the beach line here is not small. Bo Phut is divided into two bays. One is popular and with hotels, the other is not very and almost without them.

As for the beach and the sea. They are suitable for swimming and beach holidays, and I think this is the most important thing for many.

On the first bay, the sea is not very clean and a little unclear, but from a distance of 5-10 meters from the beach, it looks very decent, see the photo.

The entrance to the sea is good, there is no silt at the bottom, the depth begins already at about 5-7 meters from the shore. The sand on the beach is large, so the foot feels it very well. Unfortunately, in some parts of the beach it is dirty, bottles, bags and all sorts of other filth are scattered.

I didn’t see merchants on this beach, there are sun loungers, but I don’t know whether to rent or not, but I think if they can be rented, then don’t count on a price below 100 baht.

View from the wooden pier to another part of Bo Phut (first bay)

The second Bangrak bay of this area is quieter, there are almost no hotels, and if there are, then across the road. The sea on the second bay is very similar to the one on the first, perhaps a little cleaner, since there are fewer people here.

The beach here is more noisy, as there is a road nearby, the coastline is very small, but enough for a towel. I did not see sun loungers here, so I only come here with my beach accessories. As umbrellas there are palm trees, of which there are quite a lot. The sand is almost the same as on the first bay.

Choeng Mon District

This area seemed very calm to me, although I was passing through here, so the first impression can be deceiving. But judging by the descriptions on the Internet, this is really a secluded place with beautiful natural excellent sea and beach. I also didn’t manage to take a photo, since there is no walking street here, like, for example, on Bo Phut.

This area is suitable for those who want a relaxing beach holiday.

Choeng Mon Beach

I managed to visit the most extreme part of this area, just before the start of Chaweng, and more precisely, on the territory of the Olivio restaurant, the hotel was called Matlang Resort.

There is no beach opposite the hotel, so the guest has to climb over the rocks (about 20 meters) to the beginning of Chaweng beach. For that the sea here is very clean, I liked it, and there is also a great pool / jacuzzi near the bar and with a great view. See for yourself in the photo below.

Chaweng District

Chaweng (in English Chaweng) is the heart of Koh Samui, the busiest area of the island. It has both nightlife and a great beach holiday. Here you will find many restaurants and cafes, massage parlors, hotels and shops, as well as fun and non-children's entertainment.

The area is quite large and lively, especially at night. It is not for nothing that it is considered the most pretentious on the island, since most of the hotels are 4 * -5 *, but despite this, the prices here are much lower than on Bo Phut.

I noticed that during the day almost all stores are closed, and there are almost no people on the street, apparently this is a common occurrence, so the owners of some stores do not open during the daytime, but start their work closer to 16:00 - 17:00.

As on Bo Phut, there are many interesting restaurants here, the choice is so large that in the evening it becomes problematic to choose a place for your meal.

At night, a different life wakes up in Chaweng, here you will find several beach discos, hookahs on the seashore, fire shore, great music and atmosphere.

I think that Chaweng is perfect for those who love a beach holiday during the day and fun at night.

Chaweng Beach

Chaweng has a great beach. Wide coastline (about 10-15 meters, in some places maybe a little more), long (about 3-4 km.), Clean. This is one of the few beaches where the number of hotels, discos, cafes and bars did not affect the purity and beauty of the sea and sand.

I want to note that the sand here is just a miracle, fine and soft, as well as the entrance to the sea and its depth are ideal. Plus, there are no stones and corals that you can accidentally step on and get injured.

Chaweng beach - sea and sand

Even in bad weather, it is much cleaner here than on any other beach.

Chaweng beach video

Bays between Chaweng Noi and Laem Nam Beach

In addition to large areas where there are many hotels, Koh Samui has small bays that are not only quiet, but also beautiful. I managed to visit two.

  1. The first is located near the Coral Cove Resort.
  2. The second one is near Crystal Bay.

These bays are perfect for those who love privacy and silence, there are only a few hotels, there is almost nothing, except for a couple of restaurants. If you want to go somewhere at night, it will not be so easy without your vehicle.

Well, now let's see how it all looks in the photo and video.

Photo and video of the bay near the Coral Cove Resort

On the first bay, the sea is calm, clean, but not azure. The sand on the beach is large, the beach is clean, there are few people, the entrance to the sea is good, but sometimes stones come across on the way.

Photo and video of the bay near the Crystal Bay Hotel

In terms of beauty and cleanliness, this place is much better than the previous one. The sand here is fine, white and soft. The sea is very beautiful, azure, there are many large stones, but they only add beauty to the surrounding landscape. There are a little more people here than on the first bay, but again, not so many, so everyone will have a place under the sun.

Lamai District

The Lamai area is considered one of the three most popular on the island. Its popularity is due to the fact that there are much more hotels from 1 * to 3 *, and, accordingly, the prices for rooms here are much lower than in Chaweng or Bo Phut. As for cafes and restaurants, the prices here are not too different from Chaweng. I didn't notice much difference. The only thing is that there are a little more cheap cafes where the Thais themselves eat.

What else I noticed is that the area looks much poorer and more modest than the other two that I mentioned above, there are also significantly more women / girls of easy virtue and bars than anywhere else on the island. Despite this, Lamai Beach is very quiet at night, as all the concentration is directed to street bars and several discos. At night, there are a couple of restaurants and bars on the beach with hookah and music. Therefore, if you like beach parties, then you better go to Chaweng.

If we compare the contingent of people of Lamai, Chaweng or Bo Phut, then the differences are obvious. There are more poor backpackers here, old farangs who all day long do nothing but drink and, as I said, girls of easy virtue. As well as many of our compatriots.

In general, my impressions of this area remained neutral, for some it may be fun here, but for some it will not be pleasant at all.

This area is more suitable for relaxation for singles (but not for everyone), as well as for those who want to save money on a hotel and a little on food.

If I were to choose a place for my vacation on the island, then it would definitely not be the Lamai area.

Lamai beach

The beach is long, about 4-5 km, at the beginning and in the middle of the beach the sea is not the cleanest, it seemed to me that the sea here is the dirtiest when compared with other beaches on the island. The sand on the beach is coarse, it is far from ideal (soft, white as flour), so if you lie on it without towels, then you will not be enough for a long time. The entrance to the sea is gentle, the depth is good, there is no silt at the bottom, in general, it is suitable for swimming.

There are many Thai families with children on this beach at the weekend, which makes it not the best place for a relaxing beach holiday.

For those who want to go here, know that the state of this beach is highly dependent on weather conditions and some other factors unknown to me that turn the sea into a green swamp.

To my question to the Thais why the sea is of such a color, I could not get an answer, but they said that it was on the trail. day everything will be fine. I was here in October. One Thai told me - “Lamai is the most sinful area, that’s why the sea is like this here”.

Surprisingly, this was not noticed on other beaches, although I specifically drove all of them that day to look at their condition, but it was perfect.

Other beaches and areas of Koh Samui

Traveling around the island without a map, it was very difficult to remember and understand where I am, therefore, the photos that you will see next will not have the names of the beach and the area, they were taken somewhere on Koh Samui, but I won’t tell you exactly where it is .

The only thing I want to note is that most of the areas that I have not written about are quiet, calm areas, where there is almost nothing besides the hotel. Therefore, if you want something secluded, then you are somewhere in these parts. But be careful, as most of the beaches here are not suitable for swimming, there are too many corals, stones and shallow.

You can swim on the beach below, deep sea, long coastline, good sand, almost no hotels, many houses.

The best beach on Koh Samui

Summing up this article, I want to highlight The best beach on Koh Samui in my opinion is Chaweng, beautiful clear sea, a lot of entertainment, there is something to do.

Have you been to Koh Samui? Which beach do you think is the best?

So in order. I will talk about those beaches that, from my point of view, are worth visiting. I liked the following beaches and I personally visited all of them. Some are good for hanging out, some for meditation and relaxation, and most are good for swimming.

Chaweng beach(Chaveng Beach)- the most central and popular on Koh Samui, a kind of analogue of Phuket's Patong Beach. Located on the east coast of the island - you can meet the dawn. As for me, Chaweng is suitable for swimming starting from its central part and further south. A good gentle entry into the sea, a clean bottom without stones, more suitable for couples with children. In favor of this, soft and fine white sand is pleasant to wander on. Along the edge farthest from the water, the beaches are all lined with sunbeds and cafes, you can only use sunbeds if you live in the appropriate hotel. Not a fan of lying on the beach - so it didn't bother me at all.

Excellent infrastructure, a lot of expensive and not very hotels, as a result, many package tourists rest here. Chaweng is crowded even in the "low" season. As a result, there are many merchants of all kinds of food. It storms here mainly from November to January, the rest of the year is calm.

There are a lot of all kinds of marine entertainment here - jet skis, bananas and catamarans.

Silence on Chaweng comes in the morning - from 9.00 to 11.00 in the morning you can safely enjoy high-quality sand, sea and silence. At this time I recommend to visit.

Chaweng Noi beach(Chaveng Noi Beach)- in fact, this is the southern part of Chaweng beach. It doesn't look like central Chaweng at all and I personally vote for this beach with both hands. This is where I lived. Pros: there is no such movement as in central Chaweng, not such a shallow and gentle entry into the water, fewer people, there are practically no merchants. Close to Lamai beach and the market where we bought grilled seafood. Our hotel was located above the road and this did not bother us at all - we were not tied to a specific beach and looked at 75% of everything that can be seen on Koh Samui.

Lamai beach (Lamai Beach)- Another popular beach, which is more preferred by independent travelers. Mostly in the vicinity of the beach there are inexpensive bungalows and hotels. The sand is larger and for some reason you fall into it, on Chaweng it is smaller and denser, nevertheless, the beach was somehow hooked. Probably because it is less commercialized than Chaweng. There is no special beauty, there are palm trees over the sea. Spacious and serene, the people are much less than in Chaweng. In my ranking, I put it in 2nd place. From here it is most convenient to get to many attractions of Koh Samui - waterfalls, temples and simply beautiful places.

Coral Cove

Very picturesque bay, between the beaches Chaweng NoiAndLamai Beach. Only 130 meters of sand. The main feature of the beach is the huge beautiful boulders of coral origin. The landscape is somewhat reminiscent of the Seychelles, between the boulders is full of secluded places. Ideal for lovers of silence, only the sea, sand and boulders, there is nothing else. The nearest bar-restaurant is upstairs along the Koh Samui Ring Road, where the Coral Cove Hotel is located, from whose bungalows you have a great view of the Gulf of Thailand. You can get to the beach only through the territory of the hotel, many people think that the beach also belongs to the hotel - this is not so. There are no private beaches on Koh Samui, you can freely walk and sunbathe and swim. Nevertheless, strangers practically do not go to this beach - which makes it just an ideal place for a secluded atmospheric vacation.

A big plus of the beach is that it is a secluded place, but not far from active parties and nightlife, you can get to the nearest party on Lamai or Chaweng by songteo (local form of public transport) in 10 minutes for a small amount.

Thongtakian

This is the most beautiful bay on Koh Samui, in my opinion. She is especially beautiful from above. Finding it is easy, after Coral Cove if you go south, the ring road turns sharply in the area of the Thongtakian hotel, Cristal Bay Resort, La Mer Samui Resort and Samui Yacht club are also nearby. There are signs everywhere, so it's hard to miss. The path to the beach goes towards the sea, follow the signs of the hotels and get to the beach.

The bay is also called Silver beach or Crystal Bay. There are picturesque cliffs on both sides, and a coral reef under the water. If you're lucky, you can meet turtles or small rays. Mask and fins are a must. The beach itself is unusually green, in addition to palm trees, it is full of other deciduous trees that create a cozy and private atmosphere.

Here, white very fine as powder sand and clear sea. On the left side of the glibok bay, literally immediately, there are boulders nearby, on the right, shallow water is ideal for children, for families with children there is expanse.

There are cafes on the shore, a few restaurants of a good standard are further away, including the famous The Cliff, naturally with a steep sea view.

Laem Set

The place is very quiet and unpopular with the mass tourist. Located south of the beaches of Hua Thanon, on Cape Laem Set. A very gentle entry into the water, as a result of an unpresentable view at strong low tides. An absolute plus can be considered a long coral reef away from the coast. In addition to snorkeling, the beach is ideal for active sports - kiting or windsurfing.

The place is located near the mega-popular Lamai beach. The eastern part of the beach is a great place to watch the sunrise.

From here it is convenient to get to the waterfalls of Na Muang 1 and Na Muang 2, near the Aquarium, Butterfly Garden and Tiger Zoo.

Other attractions include Buddha's Footprint (see map)

Bang Kao and Natien (Bang Kao, Natien Beach)

This is the south of Koh Samui. From the west, the beaches are closed by Cape So (Laem So), on which the southernmost point of the island is located, and from the east by Laem Set Beach.
Cape So is the best place to watch the sunset, although the Surat Thani coast, which is in full view from here, interferes with beauty. In addition to sunsets, the sunrise is clearly visible from here, which is often no less beautiful than the sunset.

Bang Kao has a gentle entrance to the water, soft and pleasant sand. Ideal for morning walks and relaxing alone. Nearby is a small coral reef where you can dive.

Not far from the beach in the depths of the island is the temple of Wat Khunaraam. He is famous for the mummified monk who died more than thirty years ago during another meditation in the lotus position.

Another attraction is the Laem Sor Pagoda, which looks very beautiful in the evening light against the backdrop of the turquoise sea, it is located on Cape So (Laem Sor). On the same cape is the White Pagoda (Khao Chedi)

Samrong Bay

This is the most expensive bay of the island, the northernmost bay, and from here it is the closest to another paradise island, Koh Phangan. Two hundred meters of coarse yellow sand and picturesque rocks, a gradual increase in depth - a brief description of the beach. Few tourists know about this bay, so it is also called the Secret Bay.

Nearby is the airport and airplanes - the only thing that worries people who are vacationing here, but you quickly get used to them.

Here is the most expensive hotel of the island Arayaburi Boutique Resort. The entrance to the beach is through the hotel, you can leave your car upstairs and not worry about anything. The beach is miniature, less than 200 meters long and very picturesque. This is the quietest beach on the island, there are plenty of tables around where you can sit and watch the sea. It is better to swim in slippers, sharp fragments of corals and shells come across.

In addition, there are a couple of beautiful beaches on Cape Samrong.

Choeng Mon

Located in the northeast of the island. The beach is surrounded by greenery and is about a kilometer long. Fine coral sand in some places alternates with coarser sand. The beach is conditionally divided into two bays, the entrance to the water is convenient with a gradual increase in depth. The water is clear, and the bottom is cleared of small corals and cameos. Plus the beach - calm and clear water.

The coastline is lined with mostly high-end hotels. The beach is equipped with sunbeds, showers and toilets. Full of cafes, restaurants and of course massage corners. Like many Koh Samui beaches, it is suitable for family vacations and those who like to dine right on the beach in a restaurant.

There is no active nightlife and related entertainment. There is a golf club nearby. The landmark of the beach is a huge figure of a football player made of coconuts.

Maenam Beach

This beach is located in the north of the island. It also offers views of Koh Phangan. Coarse yellow sand, a gentle entrance and a length of about 5 kilometers. The water is cloudy, as two rivers flow into the bay in this area. At low tide, the bottom is not exposed, there is enough depth. Not far from the beach there is a morning market, in general, the concentration of local residents here is the highest. This area is good for a long stay on the island. It is here that it is ideal to observe the life of local residents and this, in my opinion, is the most authentic place on Koh Samui. Suitable for those who want to immerse themselves in the environment and live a little among the Thais.

Bophut

Bophut beach is located in the north of the island, east of the beach Maenam Beach, and borders on neighboring beaches - Maenam and Big Buddha.

The length of the sand spit is about three kilometers. The sand here is about the same as on Maenam.

Bophut Beach is best known for its unique cafes, signature restaurants and concept boutique hotels.

Along the main street of the beach there are many small Thai shops, most of which are handmade. The place is quite crowded, but pleasant. Here is the most delicious Thai Tom Yum soup.

The famous Fisherman's Village or "fisherman's village" is located on this beach. Most of the chefs of famous Samy restaurants buy local fish in this market.

Most of the hotels are expensive, but you can find a fairly decent one.
