04.03.2020

The main events in St. Petersburg in honor of the City Day will be held on May 27, 2016. For one evening, in honor of City Day, Palace Square will turn into an impromptu front hall. The main attribute of the interior - the central chandelier of 200 lamps - will emphasize the beauty of the facade of the Winter Palace. The diameter of the chandelier frame is 2.5 m, the total weight is 620 kg. It consists of 32 small chandeliers, 2500 crystal pendants. It took four people to assemble the chandelier, they worked for about six hours.

By the Day of the City, gardeners also planted 2 million flowers in St. Petersburg, the Committee for Improvement reports. Such a volume of landings was ensured due to the warm and sunny May.

There were not so many people in St. Petersburg even at the matches of the football world championship.

According to official figures, 65,110 people attended the Leningrad concert at the St. Petersburg football arena. So many stadium concerts in Russia have never collected.

Previously, the top 5 was:
Metallica, "Luzhniki", July 18, 2007. 62,000 people.
U2, "Luzhniki", August 25, 2010. 60,000 people.
imagine Dragons, "Luzhniki", August 29, 2018. 55,000 people.
"Leningrad", "Opening Arena", July 13, 2017. 47,000 people.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Luzhniki", July 22, 2012. About 40,000 - 50,000 people (data vary).

We did not include Michael Jackson's concert in the rating, which he gave at Luzhniki on September 15, 1993, since it is now difficult to estimate how many people were there in reality. For example, "Kommersant" (issue dated September 17, 1993) writes: "80 thousand spectators were waiting in the open air for the appearance of an idol." Novye Izvestia, on the other hand, gives completely different data - that 30,000 tickets were not sold, that the stadium was almost empty due to terrible weather, but in the end, somewhere around 60,000 people still gathered. Also on the network you can find information that 50,000 tickets were sold for Jackson's concert.

Artists also performed at the opening ceremonies of the World Cup and the 2014 Olympics at Luzhniki (78,011 spectators) and Fisht (40,000 spectators), respectively, but they should not be taken into account - these are sporting events. Rallies and concerts were also held in Luzhniki - for example, on November 4, 2017. It was reported that 130 thousand people came to the rally-concert at that time. But it should be regarded as more of a political than a musical event.

If we take into account non-stadium concerts, then, for example, the rock festival "Invasion" in 2001 was attended by over 100 thousand people. At the DDT concert on Palace Square in 1993, 120,000 people attended. True, and the entrance to it was free.

The very best concert in terms of attendance in Russia was held on September 6, 1997, when they celebrated the 850th anniversary of Moscow. Jean-Michel Zhar put on a show on the Sparrow Hills that was watched by all of Moscow. Wikipedia has an astounding figure of 3.5 million people! Maybe an exaggeration, but witnesses say: there were an incredibly large number of people.

There were big concerts in the days of the USSR. Not just big - grandiose!

On September 28, 1991, the legendary concert "Monsters of Rock in Moscow" gathered a gigantic audience. Information varies: somewhere they write about 400 thousand, somewhere (for example, in the English-language Wikipedia) - about one and a half million people. Cult groups performed - Pantera, Metallica, AC / DC.

On August 12 and 13, 1989, the Moscow Music Peace Festival was held at Luzhniki. In two days, 180 thousand people visited it. Very powerful rock stars arrived - Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Scorpions, Cinderella.

On June 24, 1990, a concert of the Kino group took place at Luzhniki. It was visited by about 70 thousand people. That is, this is the most visited solo concert in the history of our country. For Kino, he was the last - on August 15, 1990, Viktor Tsoi died in a car accident.

It will open with a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the monument to Peter the Great on Senate Square. The ceremony starts at 10.00. Nevsky Prospekt, Ostrovsky Square and Palace Square will be the venues for the main events of the holiday. Ostrovsky Square will host the Annual Ice Cream Festival, which will start at 11.00 and will last until 21.00. A grandiose procession in carnival costumes will take place on Nevsky Prospekt. The festival will close with a festive concert, which will take place at 21.00 on the Palace Square. The full program of events scheduled for May 27:

"Classics on Dvortsovaya" celebratory concert, in the framework of the City Day - the Day of the Foundation of St. Petersburg Palace Square

About 25 kilograms weigh notes for the show "Classics on the Palace", preparations for which are already underway on the main square of St. Petersburg. The traditional celebration of classical art in honor of the City Day will take place on May 27 and, according to the organizers, will gather over half a million spectators. This year, among the works performed are well-known, but not stereotyped classics. The concert starts at 21.00. Free admission.

The program is designed in such a way as not to repeat itself (the project will be six years old) or the "protocol" of most opera concerts. Light and spectacular arias, duets (and even quartets) from operas by Rossini, Verdi, Saint-Saens, Leoncavallo, Offenbach, Puccini and operettas by Kalman, Lehar, Lecoq, sunny Neapolitan songs and unexpected hits will be performed by outstanding opera stars of our time - for some of these, it will be the first St. Petersburg open-air.

The owner of a unique soprano, a man of the world and just a beauty Sonya Yoncheva already performed in St. Petersburg, but not in an open area. She is called the best La Traviata since Maria Callas, but her repertoire is incredibly wide: from refined baroque to jazz and even rock compositions.

Petersburg debut awaits American opera diva Danielle De Nise. Having received Emmy at the age of 16, the main US television award, for her performance on the stage of the Los Angeles Opera, she never ceases to amaze the audience with daring experiments: in parallel with the conquest of the world's leading opera venues, she writes soundtracks for Ridley Scott films, tries herself in various genres of performing arts such as hip hop for example.

The temperamental duet of Don Carlos and Rodrigo from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Don Carlos" will open their performance in "Classics on Palace Square" world opera stars and good friends Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Marcelo Alvarez. Dmitry needs no introduction, but it is enough to say about Marcelo that he built his career as an opera singer in three years and almost from scratch, leaving the family furniture business, to which he devoted 10 years of his life. All this time, singing was only a hobby, but at some point he realized that he would either seriously take up opera vocals, or fate would pass by. Today, Marcelo Alvarez is in the top 5 tenors of our time.

The Russian opera representation will include tenors unique in timbre and beauty - soloist of the Bolshoi Theater Alexey Tatarintsev and the Mariinsky Theater Sergei Skorokhodov, incendiary soprano Veronika Dzhioeva and deep expressive mezzo-soprano Julia Matochkina.

By tradition, music on the Palace Square will only sound live - performed by Symphony Orchestra of the Mikhailovsky Theater conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov.

The dance line of the evening will be created by masters of Spanish flamenco - a team of dancers with a worldwide reputation Ursula Lopez, and the legendary St. Petersburg dance group TODES. Both one and the other will have to enter their skills into unusual musical content for them - they put on numbers specifically for the "Classics on the Palace".

Undoubtedly, "Classics on Dvortsovaya" should give the impression of a holistic enchanting holiday with an internally built dramaturgy, consonant with musical emotion and movement, - says the director of the project Ekaterina Galanova. - But in order for the picture to develop, the viewer should not get bored for a minute! Each individual performance should turn into a mini-performance - with a plot, with the main characters, with its own dance pattern, with a certain set of images, with an atmosphere and mood ... This year we are installing video projection screens on the stage, on which video content will be broadcast. For each number - its own. The video content was prepared by longtime partners of Dance Open - St. Petersburg and French specialists. To be honest, what Petersburgers and guests of the city will see will be the result of a painful creative search and a careful selection of artifact details from the creators of the best 3D shows in Europe, as well as in St. Petersburg and Moscow. There are 29 numbers in the concert, for each of them 3-4 variants of sketches were created. Believe me, these are terabytes of labor. Of course, we do not promise 3D video in the conditions of the White Nights, but we guarantee an unprecedented spectacle.”

Here are some interesting numbers:

More than 100 concert ball gowns will be replaced by the participants of the upcoming open-air. If translated into the language of numbers, then this is a kilometer of fabric, over 800 meters of flounces, 97 meters of crinoline tape and 72 meters of finishing braid. The gilded chandelier, which has become a symbol of the project, will be raised on May 25 in the morning. Its diameter, taking into account all hinged structures, is almost four meters. It is assembled from 32 small chandeliers and 2500 crystal pendants, the assembly is carried out by four people and takes almost a full day. The total weight of the chandelier is 620 kg. The total power consumption is 8 kW. Wiring to connect all 200 lamps takes 7 days.

The project will take place at the initiative of the Government of St. Petersburg with the support of the Committee for Culture.

A real celebration of classical art, held on Palace Square in honor of the City Day - the Day of the Foundation of St. Petersburg, over the course of several years has turned into a vibrant cultural brand that attracts the attention of not only St. Petersburg residents, but also Russian and foreign tourists.

The audience of the show “Classics on Dvortsovaya” is growing every year, and it is expected that on May 27, 2017, a public concert of world opera and choreographic art will once again gather over half a million spectators.

The program of the show, which has never been repeated in five years, promises to be special this time too: soloists from the world's leading opera scenes - La Scala, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris and Vienna Opera, including representatives of the national opera school, will perform exquisite classical works, old Neapolitan songs, fragments from famous operettas. Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, Gounod, Saint-Saens, Legar, Kalman - the works of these and other geniuses of classical art will be accompanied by the Mikhailovsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov, as well as one of the best youth choirs in the city. The invariable principle of "Classics on Dvortsovaya" is only live music and live sound.

People's Artist of Russia, the unsurpassed Dmitry Hvorostovsky will congratulate St. Petersburg on his birthday - immortal musical hits performed by the headliner of the world opera will again be performed in the concert space of Palace Square. Together with him, world-famous performers who have not previously performed at St. Petersburg open-airs will take the stage: one of the best tenors of our time, Marcelo Alvarez; a star in demand by leading opera venues, an inimitable soprano and the face of popular world brands Sonya Yoncheva; exquisite beauty, American opera diva, owner of the lyric soprano Danielle De Niese; incendiary and bright performer of world renown, guest soloist of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters Veronika Dzhioeva; soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia, tenor Alexei Tatarintsev, unique in technique and beauty of sound; the soloists of the Mariinsky Theater are the melodic, expressive tenor Sergei Skorokhodov and the deep, regal mezzo-soprano Yulia Matochkina.

This year, Classics on Dvortsovaya will surprise you with even greater spectacle. The idea of turning each performance into a mini-performance - with luxurious costumes, full-fledged dramaturgy and artistic atmosphere - will be strengthened by bright scenographic solutions. Five large-sized LED video screens will be installed for spectators on Palace Square.

In general, over 200 square meters of video projection canvas will be used to create visual art effects on the square and on the stage.

As a gift to connoisseurs of ballet art, the program of the classical evening includes fragments from choreographic masterpieces performed by famous artists. A special, truly St. Petersburg atmosphere will be given to the evening by the performances of the artists of the Theater "Mr. Pejo's Wandering Dolls".

The dance part of the show will be adorned by the corps de ballet of the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater named after Leonid Yakobson, the flamenco master of the dance company Ursula Lopez and the show ballet TODES.

The concert starts at 21.00. Free admission.

The project will take place at the initiative of the Government of St. Petersburg with the support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg.
