Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov was born on May 15, 1848 in a family with a speaking, ancient Russian surname. He studied at a religious school and, of course, took drawing lessons, by the way, his younger brother followed in the footsteps of his elder brother and also became an artist, but did not gain such popularity as Victor. Already in 1893, Vasnetsov became a full member of the Academy of Arts. He made an incomparable contribution to the development of all Russian art, and especially painting, as he was an unsurpassed painter, a master of the brush.
The painting "Alyonushka" was created in 1881, but before starting work on the painting, the artist wrote a number of sketches, which depicted forest landscapes, and in the final version, he seemed to combine them together and added a girl. It turned out to be a beautiful, fabulous canvas. In the background, you can see a sprawling dense forest, which at the same time beckons, but also induces horror with its blackness and impenetrable firs, in the foreground we see a reservoir on which already yellowed leaves float imposingly, which indicates the approach of autumn.
On the coast, giant boulders lie calmly, and a young girl sits on one of them, she bows her head to her knees and looks sadly at the water. What is she thinking? About your fiancé? About brother Ivanushka? Or about the evil Baba Yaga who lies in wait for her? Everyone thinks out his own story, composes his own fairy tale. I think he drank from a puddle! Well, he drank stupid dirty water (with germs) and got poisoned. Almost ended up in the hospital! In a fairy tale, this is called - "became a kid." And he drank from a puddle, which was shaped like a goat's hoof print.
By the way, all kinds of demons also have goat prints! Not without tricks of evil spirits here and dark forces. Here Alyonushka sits and cries. How now with such a brother to live? What if someone fires it?
The picture is autumn. Near the heroine, even small trees - Christmas trees and birches. They look a little like her. Autumn yellow leaves on the surface of the water. The sky is gray and rainy. Here comes the downpour!
Alyonushka would not have sat here, otherwise she would get wet and fall ill. Why cry over such a stupid brother?

Painting "Alyonushka" became one of the most famous works of Vasnetsov. The artist is known for depicting scenes from Russian folk tales in an unusually realistic manner. There was so much longing, loneliness and purely Russian sadness in her eyes ... Some kind of special Russian spirit emanated from her. It is interesting that initially the picture was called differently - “Fool Alyonushka”. In the 19th century, the term "fool" was used to refer to orphans.
After the work on the painting was completed, Vasnetsov presented it at the Traveling Exhibition, where she enjoyed great attention, and one of the critics, Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar (1871-1960), even called this work one of the best paintings of the Russian school.
The atmospheric picture makes you feel its mood. The girl, whose eyes and whole image express inexpressible sadness, tells about the difficult fate of the heroine of the picture. The composition of the work includes only one heroine - a fair-haired and young girl dressed in a Russian folk dress. According to the fairy tale, she had no parents, and the closest person to her was her brother Ivanushka. That is why, at first, the artist wanted to call this canvas “Fool Alyonushka”, because before that, orphans were called that.
In the picture you can see how a dark forest surrounded her from all sides. He does not want to let the heroine out of his captivity. The girl's tears drip into the water. Most likely, the artist wanted to warn about the danger that would happen to her brother or had already happened. Alyonushka is sitting in an old gray sundress, with disheveled hair and barefoot.
She is full of thoughts about Ivanushka, suddenly Baba Yaga turned him into a kid. The artist managed to perfectly describe the landscape of the work, which goes well with the character. Nothing can distract the viewer from Alyonushka.
Looking at the ingenious picture, it seems that the heroine finds solace at this pond. The girl, as it were, dissolves in bright colors and becomes part of the picture. Her humility and scratched feet not only attract the audience, but also enchant to her pure image.
In accordance with folk signs, at the end of the day, nature acquires the ability to convey human emotions. The background is copied from the Akhtynka pond, the artist depicted ominous dark green firs and a leaden gray sky. From 1868 to 1875 Vasnetsov studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. His first works were drawings and paintings on everyday topics. However, only in Moscow did he fully find himself as an artist. It was in Moscow that Vasnetsov worked on his well-known paintings: “Flying Carpet”, “Alyonushka”, “Bogatyrs”, “Ivan Tsarevich on the Gray Wolf”, “Knight at the Crossroads”. Her face, although sad, is beautiful and kind. Quiet autumn nature complements the touching image of a peasant orphan girl. Sadly young birches, aspens, and firs froze around. The trees are fragile and thin, like the heroine herself. They seem to protect her from the evil world. Nature is in tune with Alyonushka's mood: it seems that she is mourning along with the heroine.
A dark forest is reflected in a deep pool. Yellowed leaves lie motionless on the surface of the water. There is not a single ray of sun in the forest, and Alyonushka has nothing joyful and bright in her soul.
The coloring of the picture emphasizes its sad content. It is no coincidence that the artist resorts to soft deep tones of dark green, blue, yellow, red-brown colors of nature. Vasnetsov introduced other, contrasting tones into this modest color scheme. These are pink flowers on a sundress, a gentle blue sweater, juicy green sedge. Although the most popular work Viktor Vasnetsov was written based on a Russian folk tale, painting "Alyonushka" cannot be called a mere illustration. The artist pursued a different goal - not so much to recreate a well-known plot, but to “revive” a fairy-tale character, make the image close and understandable, organically fit into the surrounding nature, create a psychologically accurate portrait of the heroine.
Vasnetsov confessed to Roerich that Alyonushka was his favorite work. He began to paint a picture in the summer of 1881 in Akhtyrka, near Abramtsevo, the estate of Savva Mamontov, where the best artists of that time gathered. And he finished the work already in the winter in Moscow, where the artist often attended musical evenings at the Tretyakovs - perhaps this is one of the reasons that the picture came out so lyrical.
An old sundress with faded flowers, disheveled hair, calloused bare feet betray in Alyonushka not an abstract fairy-tale character, but a very real girl from the people. Although in facial features many guessed the resemblance to Savva Mamontov's daughter Vera - the same one who posed for Serov for "The Girl with Peaches", all other details indicate that the peasant woman became the prototype of the heroine. Vasnetsov saw her in Akhtyrka, where he was at that time.
This version is confirmed by the words of the artist himself: “The picture seemed to have been living in my head for a long time, but in reality I saw it when I met one simple-haired girl. There was so much longing, loneliness and purely Russian sadness in her eyes ... some special Russian spirit emanated from her.
Initially, Vasnetsov called the painting "Fool Alyonushka", but there is nothing insulting or ironic about the artist's attitude towards his heroine. The fact is that the word "fool" in those days was called holy fools or orphans. Let's remember the fairy tale - after the death of their parents Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushka are left alone, and desperate to find a disobedient brother, Alyonushka feels like an orphan, lonely and abandoned. Some critics insisted that this was not a fairy-tale image, but the embodiment of the orphanage of poor peasant women, such as could be found in every village.
The artist creates the general mood with the help of precise landscape details: the quiet autumn withering of nature, the dark pool at the feet of Alyonushka, muted tones, the gray sky in the clouds, fallen leaves on the shore and in the water seem to emphasize the longing and hopelessness on the face of the heroine. At the same time, the landscape cannot be called conditional or abstract - it is a recognizable nature of central Russia.
It was one of the first paintings in the history of Russian painting, where the inner experiences of a person were transmitted through a subtly reproduced state of nature. Given that the picture was created based on a fairy tale, this is quite justified - psychological parallelism is inherent in many works of oral folk art.
