How to evaluate the skill of a musician? By the emotional impact that his playing has on the audience? Or by the number of records sold? But what if you try to evaluate musicians by some other parameters? For example, by the speed of playing the drum. The way some musicians handle sticks fascinates the viewer, helps to create the right rhythm and mood, and sometimes even introduces them into a kind of trance state. Some virtuosos managed to reach unprecedented heights in their game and even set real records...

Who managed to surprise the audience not only with skill, but also with the speed of drumming? The article describes the most amazing drummers in the world.

Tom Grosset

Based on the information given in the Guinness Book of Records, the fastest drummer in the world at the moment is Tom Grosset, a resident of Canada. In July 2013, Tom Grosset managed to bypass all previous record holders: within one minute, the musician was able to hit the kit as many as 1200 times. The achievement was recorded at the sports percussion competition, which is held annually in Tennessee. By the way, in order to measure the skill of a drummer, the organizers of the competition use a specially designed device - a drumometer, with which you can measure the speed of both hands and feet of musicians. It turns out that in just one second, Grosset hits the instruments about 20 times, which, of course, cannot but amaze the imagination.

Rory Blackwell, the former drummer for the band Beach Boy, holds a mind-boggling drumming speed record. However, this is far from the only achievement of this superman of the music industry. For example, Rory set one of his most bizarre records in 1985 when he played the song "When the Saints March" on 310 instruments at the same time. Moreover, it took him only one and a half minutes, although it was originally assumed that it would take five minutes. Rory later told reporters that the only thing that kept him from playing the song even faster was the need to use such a huge number of instruments. Then he was called "the fastest drummer in the world."

On October 24, 1991, at the British Finlake Park, Rory Blackwell was able to impress the crowd by hitting the drum 3,700 times within 60 seconds. This phenomenal threshold is considered absolute, and no one has yet managed to surpass the unique musician.
Rory Blackwell holds many other world records in music and is recognized as the most virtuoso drummer in the world. Once he was able to play his drum for 126 hours without ever taking a break. And in 1995, the musician managed to hit four hundred drums in just 16 seconds.

Blackwell plays not only the drums, but the guitar as well. Here he also managed to set a steep record: within one minute he played more than nine thousand notes.

Blackwell is famous not only for his achievements in the world of music. He has always been in great demand and played with many famous musical groups. Ringo Starr himself even took lessons from Blackwell when he was just starting his musical career.
At the moment, the famous musician is on a well-deserved rest, and, most likely, hardly anyone will be able to beat his best records.

Another famous drummer is Joey Jordison. We can say that he went to the record from an early age. Joey's parents were fond of music and presented him with a musical installation as a child. Joey mastered the instrument with amazing speed, as he had an innate sense of rhythm and an absolute ear for music.

The talented young virtuoso has joined the band Slipknot. The first album that Joey took part in recorded was a tiny one, but the second one was already included in the Billboard list. Constantly touring the country with the group, Joey began to play more and more virtuoso. And everything is faster.

In 2010, Joey Jordison topped the list of the fastest drummers in the world. He has the ability to do over 32 beats per second. And this is not the only talent of the musician. The pedals of his drum kit are not connected, so he has to set the rhythm with his feet. Not without reason, after the measurements made by experts, Joey got into the Guinness Book of Records. Most likely, talents like Jordison appear no more than once a century.

Interestingly, Joey Jordison is friends with Merlin Manson. Joey starred in the videos of an extravagant singer, and Manson himself has repeatedly stated that he considers Jordison one of the best musicians in the world.

Mike Mangini, the drummer of the musical group Dream Theater, is one of the record holders for the speed of playing the drum, and he managed to win victories in several categories at once.

For the first time, Mangini sat down at the drum at the age of five. While in high school, he played in a band. True, having entered college, the young man abandoned music for a while, concentrating all his attention on studying computer technology. Mangini even worked in his specialty for some time, but he realized that he could not live without the main passion of his life: music and drumming. And, abandoning the boring programming work, Mike began to play in the musical group Annihilator and give lessons to all people who want to learn how to play the drum set.

The talented musician owns several titles at once in the nomination "The fastest drummer". He has the fastest symmetrical grip, and his hands are recognized as the fastest in the world. In addition, Mike showed the best result in kicking speed: he is able to make more than 13 thousand kicks in just 15 minutes.

Mike Mangini has not only amazing musical skills, but also an outstanding intellect. He authored two books devoted, of course, to polyrhythmic structures.

Matt Smith

On June 26, 2008, a young drummer Matt Smith from Romania managed to set a world record. At that time, the young man was only eighteen years old. Within one minute, Matt was able to hit the drum as many as 1130 times. Also, Matt is the youngest record holder who managed to overcome the milestone of 1000 blows in one minute at the age of 16.

Matt's interest in music is not surprising, because the guy's father and grandfather were quite famous jazz musicians. In addition, Matt's father holds the title of Professor of Jazz Studies at one of the Romanian universities. Matt began playing the drum set at the age of nine, when one of his father's friends gave the boy drumsticks. At the age of 12, Matt was already performing on stage, and at 14 he recorded his first album.

Since 2005, the young man began to set drumming records. He is not only the fastest young musician in the world, but also the most enduring. In 2007, Matt was able to perform 5130 strikes on the instrument in just five minutes.
It is difficult to say whether such mastery of the instrument is an innate feature or develops as a result of relentless training. In any case, the amazing speed of drumming cannot but amaze and cause sincere respect and surprise.
