Music festival in Europe. The most interesting festivals in Europe this summer

10.07.2019

I propose to combine business with pleasure!

I have selected for you 7 interesting festivals that will be held in Europe in 2017. It is worth planning a visit to at least one of them, especially since most of the cities from the selection are quite easy and inexpensive to get to.

Three weeks of a spectacular holiday opens with a chic show over the water near the Bridge at the Three Arches. The city is literally teeming with outlandish costumed characters, and a variety of theatrical performances and dances take place on its many venues. Where else, if not here, to get to a real ball? Moreover, the costume can be rented right before the social reception.

Dates: 11.02 - 28.02.2017

Lemon Festival in Menton (France)

For about two weeks, residents and guests of Menton are delighted with incredible figures of lemons, oranges and grapefruits. I'm sure you've never seen anything like it! There are fairy-tale characters, entire castles and even edible trees! About 130 tons of citrus fruits are used to create sculptures, and the warm climate of the French Riviera allows for several harvests per year. Of course, not without all sorts of tastings.

This year the opening of the festival is scheduled for February 11, 2017.

Walpurgis Night in Prague

Although this holiday is primarily associated with the witches' sabbath, it is worth knowing that it got its name in honor of the nun - Saint Walpurga - a woman of incredible kindness and an open heart. On this day, people celebrated the arrival of spring and prayed for a rich harvest and healthy offspring.

According to pagan traditions, it is on this night that the unclean forces arrange their covens. To scare her away, it is customary to ring bells and burn bonfires.

It is enough to put on a medieval or mystical outfit - and now you are already inscribed in the holiday atmosphere. Go to the central square of the Old Town or to the Petrin Hill park on the western bank of the Vltava - the most colorful performances and performances take place there.

Date: 30.04 - 01.05.2017

Pflasterspektakel street art festival in Linz and Bodypainting Festival in Klagefurt (Austria)

Heaven for visual art lovers! If you are planning to be in Austria at the end of July, it is worth visiting at least one of the festivals.

Representatives of more than 40 countries of the world come to Linz, who amaze guests with acrobatic stunts and unusual numbers. In 2017, the festival will be held for the 31st time.

The most important world event for bodypainting fans takes place in Klagefurt, and this year it is the 20th anniversary. The imagination of the participants is truly limitless and immerses the audience in an unusual surreal world. It's definitely worth seeing at least once in your life.

Dates: acrobat festival: 07/21 - 07/23/2017, body painting festival - 07/24 - 07/30/2017.

Tomatina Festival in Bunyol (Spain)

This is where they really throw tomatoes! For this tomato battle, the city authorities buy about 100 tons of tomatoes. Local residents prepare for this holiday in a notable way: they board up the windows of the first floors and stick a protective film on the doors. At the beginning of the action, trucks with tomatoes arrive at the central square and for an hour the city center turns into a red-bloody mess. Can you imagine: ankle-deep in tomatoes?

You can get to Bunyol by public transport or by car from Valencia in less than an hour.

Festival date: 08/30/2017.

La Merce Festival in Barcelona

One of the most spectacular events in Europe, the festival makes the competition "castells" - castles made of people. The whole city turns into one grandiose theater and concert venue, and in the evenings many colorful fireworks are launched here. Another traditional entertainment is the parade of giant dolls. This is where you can feel like a midget!

This festival has been held on a grand scale since ancient times, and is dedicated to the maiden La Merce, the patroness of Barcelona.

Dates: 09/16 - 09/22/2017

Light Festival in Berlin

A spectacle that transforms the city beyond recognition. Hundreds of fireworks, tens of hundreds of spotlights and lanterns - all the most famous sights turn into incredible light installations. The city authorities are also launching a special LightLiner bus route to make it convenient to move between objects. On the last evening of the festival, a 10-kilometer running marathon "City Light Run" takes place in the center of Berlin.

Dates: 07.10 - 16.10.2017.

From June to September, the whole of Europe for the summer becomes a huge field of experimentation for promoters who hold not only major international festivals, but also very small events in not the biggest cities. The advantage of such events is that for very modest money you find yourself in not the most obvious European regions, from the Basque Country to the Mediterranean coast, see local life without tourist guides and come up with your own unforgettable summer trip, where good summer concerts are only part of the program.

Look At Me chooses 20 less obvious festivals, too small to be global and for too many outsiders to know about. In addition, these places are usually famous among advanced tourists in their own right, so a trip can deliver much more impressions than one big rave. Even if you just find yourself somewhere nearby, pay attention - it is possible that what is happening literally 50-100 kilometers away will pleasantly surprise you.

south side

When: June 22-24
Where: Neuhausen ob Eck, Germany

Tickets: festival + camping for all days - 131 euros

Listen

Also: Blink-182, Rise Against, The Temper Trap, The Kooks, Stoned Roses, Gus Gus, Nneka, Die Antwoord, Twin Shadow, Mumford & Sons, High Flying Birds, Kettcar, The Mars Volta, etc.

The rock festival that has been taking place in the south of Germany since 1999 is not the most obvious, like some Primavera, but no less worthy for that. Like its twin Hurricane (which is located just in the German north), it has established itself well in the circle of independent music lovers. The first Southside was held at the air base, and since 2000 the campsite has been located in the picturesque place of Neuhausen ob Eck on the border with Switzerland. 100 thousand people from Germany, Switzerland and Holland come here and hang out there for three days in a row in the noisy surroundings of the European giant festival. Of the pluses and minuses at the same time, there is a large territory: four separate stages are located in different corners, so the sound of different bands, be it pop-punk, country or electronic, does not overlap at all. One of the ideas of the festival is eco-friendly: no glass and plastic bottles, household waste and other rubbish artifacts. You collect a bag with the latest - you get back 5 euros.
The event takes place without any problems in absolutely any weather - there have been hurricanes and heavy rain, the rockers do not care. Disposable raincoats, by the way, are also returned for reincarnation.

Around

From too secluded and super calm rural Germany, you can go to lively and very pleasant French Strasbourg, to Lake Constance, to student and cheerful Munich or to Austria - to look at the secluded European life from the other side. At the Spremberg dam, you can camp with a tent and go fishing, water skiing, mountain biking or horseback riding. The campsite has some amenities: toilet, shower and even a washing machine. You can play golf in the Dreschnitz area, or head to the Debberner beach, where there are many high cable cars, for a dose of adrenaline.

Main Square Festival

Listen

Also: Wiz Khalifa, The xx, Editors, M83, Ben Howard, Florence + the Machine, The Subways, X, Metronomy and more.

The festival has been held for 7 years on the main square and in the ancient citadel of the 17th century in the French city of Arras. This place is very atypical: French cuisine, many Europeans and Flemish gingerbread houses, which are built up throughout the old center. Main Square is by right one of the largest summer festivals in France at the intersection of the main routes of Europe, at an equal distance from Brussels, Paris and London, so it is quite easy to get there. And the sea is not far away - a very good place for a musical, and not only, travel.

Around

From Arras you can go straight to Paris, or you can go on a more exotic journey along the northern coast of France, Normandy with an unpredictable climate, cider, which they love more than wine here, and a tour of the fortress medieval cities - Amiens, Le Havre and Caen.

Hop Farm Festival

When: June 29 - July 1
Where: Paddock Wood, UK

Tickets: three days - 162 pounds, one day adults - 65 pounds, teenagers (13-19 years old) - 32 pounds, children under 12 years old - free of charge. No additional fees.

Listen

Also: Billy Ocean, Suede, Athlete, Damien Rice, Ian Hunter And The Rant Band, Leftwich, Tallest Man On Earth, The Stranglers, The Futureheads, Lianne La Havas, Howling Bells, British Sea Power, I Am Kloot, Field Music , Peter Hook And The Light et al.

The fifth annual festival taking place in Paddock Wood, southeast Kent, UK. During its history, I have seen performances by Bryan Ferry, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, and Morrissey and Prince became headliners. In addition to three large concert venues, there are dozens of other ways to have fun at Hop Farm. For example, there is a popular comedy scene Late Night Comedy, the Ultimate Indie Disco dance floor, amateur gatherings Camp Acoustic and a couple of small stages. It is noteworthy that the festival is not branded, without any VIPs and sponsorships, so the atmosphere is utterly familiar and friendly. The entry of couples with children from two to 12 is allowed and welcome, and if the parents paid for their tickets, then their children have fun absolutely free.

Around

Paddock Wood is located 65 kilometers from London, you can get there both by car and by train. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes and costs £16 one way. But it’s even more pleasant in the summer to go not to stuffy London, but to the North Sea coast - to the very popular Brighton or the less hackneyed, but no less charming Plymouth: go to the famous Lido, to the Barbican flea market, find yourself in a marine aquarium and eat seafood a year ahead.

Putte I Parken

Listen

Also: Tinie Tempah, Ane Brun, Slagsmålsklubben, Timbuktu, Thåström, Hank Williams III, Familjen, Markus Krunegård, Melissa Horn, Young Guns, Weeping Willows, Jonathan Johansson and others.

This is a young Swedish festival in typical Scandinavian style - it's very cozy here, there are no superstars and there are a lot of local musicians and tourists from all over Scandinavia who are very patriotic towards their scene. The number of smart bands in Sweden and nearby gives reason to hope that new peters, bjorns and johns, in principle, can be found on any of the sites. On the territory there is a camp and three musical stages, which are located in a kind of amphitheater of natural origin. In addition to concerts of rock, noise-pop and folk bands, various art-punk bands perform at the event every now and then with strange productions - from cabarets and musicals to small performances designed to ensure that the audience is also included in the process. In general, this is a very friendly and human story of Scandinavian persuasion.

Around

Karlstad is the largest city on the pride of every Swede on Lake Vänern. In the week before or after the festival, you can go to relax in the suburbs in a quieter place, besides, at this time of the year in Sweden, the nights are almost white. If time and money allow (get ready to invest in a trip to Sweden right away), you can go east to conquer Stockholm and, if there is time, Uppsala. There, among other things, you should definitely take a cruise on a hundred islands scattered around, drink and dance on floating boats, look at Swedish designers and artists in the SoFo and WIP centers and spend days on the verandas of Stockholm's coffee houses, as the locals call it, fika. Remember the key words - Södermalm and Gamla Stan, these are the main areas in the center where it is impossible to get bored.

Super Bock Super Rock

Listen

Super Bock Super Rock is a Portuguese rock festival, which traditionally attracts all lovers of rock and heavy music, but recently it has been redesigned, and now just good and super popular musicians perform here. Since its inception, the festival has changed its location many times and even took place a couple of times in several cities at once, but in the next ten years it will be held on Meco Beach, in the municipality of Sesimbra, south of Lisbon. There are three huge stages on the territory, where, in addition to the stars announced in the lineup, several winners of the Super Bock Super Rock Preload Competition usually perform. Of course, camping is equipped at the festival. The place itself, like the entire Atlantic coast of Portugal, is very charismatic and unforgettable.

Around

Having jumped over the peninsula on which Sesimbra is located, you can find yourself in the main Portuguese city - Lisbon, which you should definitely visit at least once in your life. It's not just about the unforgettable Old Town, where you have to climb the narrow streets in the mountains among the churches, ride a tram without doors or try the famous salted cod. But also in the fact that the Portuguese language, and in general all Portuguese, is a very special and unusual phenomenon. After three days in Lisbon, you can head to the suburbs to colorful medieval Sintra, one of the most fun and distinctive provincial towns in Europe: medieval castles, colorful houses with daubed walls, an amazing baroque garden and an excellent museum of modern art.

10 days off

Listen

Also: Booka Shade, Lindstrøm, Dj Koze, John Talabot, Holy Other, Gaiser, Sheridan, Len Faki, Matthias Tanzmann, Ambivalent, Salva, Mark E, Maceo Plex, Lapalux, Kutmah, DJ Harvey, Pachanga Boys, etc.

17 years ago, this festival started under the name 10 Days Of Techno, but the days of the unconditional kingdom of techno are long gone. Now it's just a 10 Days Off festival with one of the best electronic music lineups in Western Europe: 10 days (or rather nights) inside the Vooruit art center - an old building in the center of Ghent - there are parties and concerts. The ten-day marathon takes place at the same time as the City Day, so the fun is doubled, plus crowds of Flemish and Walloon Belgians appear in the city, drinking and walking around the clock in several squares in Ghent and in the cities around.

Around

It so happened that, finding themselves in Belgium, they first of all end up in Brussels, then in Antwerp, and they never reach Ghent. This is an unfortunate omission: great music plays in the usual bars of Ghent, and the local embankments are not inferior in beauty to the over-praised Bruges. The best place to hang out is around the Blandijnberg student quarter. The main attraction of the city is the Cathedral of St. Bavo, which houses the famous masterpiece of Jan van Eyck "Adoration of the Lamb". Pub lovers should stop by the Waterhuis aan de Bierkant at Groentenmarkt 9, a pub with 400 beers. Otherwise, this is a fantastic opportunity to travel around the charming and distinctive Belgium city by city: Antwerp with its high-brow fashion life and harsh climate, cozy French-speaking Brussels, which looks like a big village, quiet Leuven with a monumental cathedral and quiet Bruges, about the nightmares of which There are a lot of lies in the film.

Paleo Festival Nyon

Listen

Also: Manu Chao La Ventura, Camille, M83, Foreign Beggars, Justice, Miles Kane, Raggasonic, Caravan Palace, Chinese Man, etc.

The largest and oldest festival in Europe takes place in Switzerland - more than 200 concerts are expected at this event over six days and nights, and it has been held since 1976. The lineup is completely unpredictable, and next to strong headliners from the 2000s, an old folk band and even a retired rock star can easily worm their way in.
The territory of the festival has already been developed and is quite developed - now it is a prosperous tourist village with a pleasant design, corrosive choice of organizers in relation to food and placement of stalls, so that lunch turns into a concert, which in turn becomes a market or a picnic with summer games.

Around

For convenient and quick movement around the city and its surroundings, it is better to rent a bicycle directly at the station for 30 francs per day. In 20 minutes you will be on the shores of Lake Geneva. And if nature impresses you, you should go to the Jura National Park to look at the Swiss mountains - here, in ideal summer conditions, you can camp for several days. And in half a day you can get to the south of France - from bourgeois Cannes and Nice to the colorful half-Arab Marseille and the secluded Camargue reserve with white horses and the charm of the small French city of Arles, where Van Gogh painted his most famous canvases.

Arenal Sound is a large musical settlement on the Mediterranean coast. Four camping areas right next to the beach, dance floors on land, water and even a boat and a summer set of everything you need - a lot of sun, sea and southern chill. The zones are geographically separated, and the infrastructure is thought out to the smallest detail, so that after six days of intensive rest, the probability of being among other people's things, friends and piles of bottles is reduced to a mathematical error. Nearby there is also the official hotel of the event and, of course, a parking lot. You can dance to almost all the music until the morning, and there will also be two competitions on the territory of the festival - one for DJs, and the second for live bands. But the real pinnacle of Arenal Sound is a boat party with an afterparty right out to sea. The boat departs every hour during the day, including at sunset.

Around

It is better to come to L "Arenal beach early, otherwise you may not find a single free sun lounger. From the most obvious tips: you should not buy a budget paella at all, it looks like undercooked pilaf with rarely found seafood. It is worth paying a little extra, and you can really Burriana architecture lovers will love the 19th century churches of El Salvador and La Merced Convent.Like any small town, it has its own absurd museum, the Orange Museum, where you can learn everything about one of Spain's main exports Nearby on the coast is lively Malaga, and a little further down is Gibraltar with its surfers and steamboats to Morocco, which leave every two hours.

SMS - this is how the event is called for short - takes place in the second week of August near Frankfurt. On the territory there are two main open stages, a large circus tent and four smaller ones; each of the tents resembles a separate club, and the pleasure boat is equipped as a dance floor. Nearby there are several camping areas, divided according to the distance to the festival site, so when choosing a place to stop, you can decide whether you want to live away from everything that happens or sleep practically by the stage. It is also one of the rare festivals where drinking beer and dancing to the musicians is not the only thing you can do. Sports competitions are held on Sonne Mond Sterne: volleyball and football, not to mention frisbee and badminton.

Around

Immediately after the end of the festival, it is worth going to Frankfurt, and then to Cologne. The main attraction in Frankfurt is its cider houses in Sachsenhausen, where you should meet the summer season. In addition to the Goethe house, the botanical gardens and the old center in an indescribable baroque style, there are five not the most popular, but no less interesting museums - from cinema to classical art, a flea market on Saturdays and boat trips along the Main. And no matter how much they say that the Cologne Cathedral is an eye-catching attraction, to see it with your own eyes, or better to stand close, close to it, is a truly indescribable experience.

Ms Dockville

When: Art Camp from 26th, Festival - August 10-12
Where: Hamburg, Germany

Tickets: festival - 69 euros, festival + camping - 87 euros

Calling Ms Dockville just a music festival is fundamentally wrong. This is a large art parade, consisting of two stages: Art Camp, an exhibition of contemporary art objects, and the actual musical part. Among the docks and industrial buildings there will be a whole village where designers, artists and media artists from all over the world will place their installations and galleries. There will also be concerts and parties two weeks later. Sound, light, video, music, all kinds of physical objects - all together in one area. Of course, there is a separate recreation area and camping with all the necessary options.

Around

In itself, Hamburg is worth it to stop by and stay for a while. The third most important German city (after Berlin and Munich) with a port spirit and northern charm - strong winds can blow here even on hot summer days, and fresh fish and seafood are always served on the verandas of the city with local German wine. About how to spend time in Schanz and not spend an hour in Berlin in vain, Look At Me.

Listen

Also: The Cure, The Black Keys, Bloc Party, High Flying Birds, The xx, Lykke Li, Wilco, Ed Sheeran, Cro, Enter Shikari, etc.

This annual festival will take place in the Green Park in the heart of the Austrian city of Sankt Pölten on the banks of the Traisen River. It began in 2000, and then only six groups performed here. Since then, the festival has grown noticeably, and now even a cursory glance at the lineup just makes your eyes widen. In addition to the musical action, the Spy Game field game is held during the festival - spy stuff, gadgets, appearances, passwords, etc. - in several stages using everything that comes to hand. The territory also houses an art park with many installations, pieces of graffiti and other impressive specimens of spectacular modern and street art. You can live quite inexpensively in excellent conditions in a green campsite, and around - just great views.

Around

Sankt Pölten is considered a hinterland, so you can easily find a real Austrian Baroque town there. Residents often wear national clothes, especially on weekends - this is considered a sign of good taste. If the prim Austrian province quickly bores you (and with cities where all life stops at 9 pm, this happens), Vienna is 2 hours by train, and Vienna in the summer is a very special place. In addition to the all-consuming tendency to ride bicycles, there are several excellent exhibitions here in the summer, and young wine made this summer is bottled in the wineries, which makes the city much more fun than usual. And in order not to wander around Vienna for a long time in search of bars and clubs, go to Spittelberg, Josefstadt and Neubau.

Zurich Open Air

When: August 23-26
Where: Zurich, Switzerland

Tickets: 1 day - 80 Swiss francs (66 euros), 4 days - 160 francs (133 euros)

Listen

Also: Skrillex, Tocotronic, SBTRKT, 2 Many DJs, Maximo Park, White Lies, Lykke Li, Orbtal, Soulwax, Magnetic Man.

A mainstream festival with a large camping for 6,000 seats and all the charms of a civilized pastime: you can get here by anything - from an airplane to a train or bus. Just a great option for those who decide to visit Switzerland at the end of the summer, plus the most boring Swiss city, which always comes to life during the arrival of European tourists.

Around

The easiest place to start is Zurich, which always has something to see - for example, the famous Kunsthaus Museum and the green city zoo with amazing exotic views. Later, if you don’t feel sorry for the money for the train (it will be cheaper to get by bus), you can ride to French Geneva and Italian Locarno to find out how three different lifestyles differ within the same country. Then it is worth getting to the mythical county of Liechtenstein, where you probably will not have another opportunity to come. If you have a free day, then boldly go to the Uetliberg mountain, from where a stunning view of the city opens. And even if quiet Switzerland does not seem secluded enough, you can do like many Swiss - go to rest on Lake Constance with a landscape of a real alpine idyll.

Listen

Also: Gang Gang Dance, Rustie, L-Vis 1990, Sepalcure, Kwes, Chris Clark, Caribou & Four Tet, The Field, Michael Mayer, Speech Debelle, Eskmo, Jimmy Edgar, Mouse On Mars, The Black Dog, Hot Chip , John Talabot, Morphosis et al.

The naive name "New Music" in the case of Poland is a long-term brand and the embodiment of what the organizers dream of - to open to the general public as much new music as possible and to let the legendary electronic artists present their fresh program here. Indeed, Autechre, DJ Krush, Prefuse 73, Jamie Lidell, Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, Battles, Bonobo, Fever Ray have played at Nowa Muzyka in six years. In 2010, the event was awarded the title of "Best Small European Festival", besides this is the first and only open event taking place in a non-modernized industrial zone, namely in the territory of abandoned coal mines, the infrastructure of which was frozen and left open. So if someone suddenly wants sharp man-made sensations to the sounds of The Black Dog - here they are.

Around

Poland is generally not the most obvious travel destination, however, in addition to pretty Katowice, where you should not stay longer than a couple of days, you can go to completely unique in its beauty medieval Krakow with castles and baroque mansions in an exceptional Eastern European style, or even more mysterious Polish Łódź, where David Lynch once filmed.

Rock en Seine

Listen

Also: Grimes, The Shins, The Black Keys, The Dandy Warhols, Foster the People, Bombay Bicycle Club, Eagles Of Death Metal, Social Distortion, Little Dragon, Ed Sheeran

This summer, the Rock En Seine festival in Paris is celebrating its 10th anniversary, traditionally, the program includes not only music, but also carnivals, a photo exhibition and even, oh my God, magicians and big top artists. Park Saint-Cloud, west of Paris, can be reached directly by metro or bus, of which there are a lot. Camping tickets may be sold out, but there are several nice hotels not far away, and it is also better to take care of the rooms in advance so as not to overpay on arrival. And while you're dancing to Grimes or The Shins, kids or little brothers hang out at the Mini Rock themed festival, where they learn to sing, play the guitar, and draw posters.

Around

Having been there at least once, you immediately understand why Saint-Cloud is considered not only one of the favorite vacation spots among the townspeople, but also the most beautiful park in Europe: once the first cycling competitions in Europe were held here. On an area of 460 hectares, there is the rose garden of Marie Antoinette, an English park founded by Louis XVIII, and a French baroque garden. When the park gets boring, you can go to the charismatic museum of the Saint-Cloud castle and the Pasteur Institute. Also, in addition to the festival, there is a display of vintage cars. To save time, money and not miss the fun, it is best to stay at a campsite located near the festival. In addition, Paris is very close, in which it is especially free and relaxed in summer: Parisians undress, drink cold white on the street, lie on the grass in the shade of chestnut trees and dance salsa at Place de la Bastille at night.

Electric Picnic

When: August 31 - September 2
Where: Stradbally, Ireland

Tickets: whole festival + camping - 230 euros, one Sunday - 99.50 euros

Listen

Also: Azaeli Banks, The Roots, Patti Smith, Squarepusher, The xx, SBTRKT, Bat For Lashes, Roots Manuva, Greezly Bear, Metronomy, Ed Sheeran, etc.

A unique Irish art festival that brings together people from all over the world to not only listen to the music of their favorite celebrities, but also watch theatrical performances, comedy performances, listen to poetry recitation and prose reading, and generally join culture and art in a relaxed summer atmosphere.
In addition to the above cultural events, visitors can relax in the shade of 400-year-old Irish oaks and dine in a cafe with local cuisine. And all these theatrical and interactive activities are just a bonus to the dozens of first-class concerts that take place on several stages. Well, the Irish themselves and the local way of life, to which almost everyone has a weakness, is also an argument.

Around

Boring but practical advice: we advise those gathered at the fest to take an adapter with them, because all electrical sockets have three holes. With public transport in these parts, things are bad, so a rental car will be very useful. Ireland is, in principle, a small country (except perhaps very expensive), and you can go around it in two weeks up and down. But if you need to choose a couple of cities, then it’s worth heading, of course, first of all to Dublin - for beer, the city and landscapes described by Joyce, very tasty and simple Irish food, which consists of various hearty combinations of potatoes and meat, and green the bluffs of the Hout coast.

The largest festivals in the world began in the era of hippies. Today, breathtaking action takes place on beaches, deserts, villages, hills and ocean platforms all over the planet. Discover 50 of the best, weirdest and biggest festivals in the world. Perhaps this TOP will become your "to-do-list" for 2017.
