According to the plot, Belka tells her children Rex, Dina and Bagel the story of how she, a circus actress, became an astronaut dog. Once she replaced an overslept actor in a dangerous number under the dome of the circus. The rocket, in which the actress was located, flew out into the street at high speed due to a malfunction and landed on the outskirts of Moscow. Finding herself in an unfamiliar area, Belka met a stray dog Strelka and her friend Venya the rat.

Some time later, while running away from stray hooligan dogs, they were caught by a stray dog catcher, who turned them in to the military, preparing animals for flights on space rockets. Squirrel, Strelka, Venya and hooligan dogs, who were also caught, were brought to Baikonur to the cosmonaut training center. The dog instructor - a German shepherd named Kazbek - conducted tough training, which not everyone could withstand. Belka, Strelka and Venya, who had their own reasons to fly into space, made incredible efforts and, thanks to friendship and mutual assistance, passed all the tests. "Space landing in DC MIIT"

Psychologists have a postulate. You will understand the motivation of actions - you will understand the person ...

It is very difficult for me personally to understand the creators of musicals in Russia.

This enterprise is, by definition, one of the most expensive to set up. A huge amount of expensive costumes, scenery, light, color, sound equipment and engineering support groups are required. The action is going on live, so the actors who are used to opening their mouths on TV to the soundtrack and taking picturesque poses do not participate here due to weakness of talent ...
After all, the simplest, cheapest, fastest and most profitable is the modern Russian enterprise. Two chairs, a mirror, an artificial ficus, a lurid picture, two male actors and one actress are taken. It is desirable - well, that at least one of the participants in the performance starred in a couple of TV series.

Everything - the theme, the author, the plot of the "performance" do not matter. A love triangle, a kind of striptease on the stage and a simple plot with two or three gags "on the verge" every 15-20 minutes. And - well, scratching through the towns and villages of the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus - from Adler to Gelendzhik somewhere in August-September with two "performances" a day. The resting public is already happy - and by geographical origin - and is completely unpretentious in its theatrical passions - because it is not spoiled by them at the "place of registration" .. In addition, being in a permanent "relaxation" from the constant inhalation of the smell of burnt meat under the name "barbecue-mashlik" and vapors of "Homemade wine", brewed by local "winemakers" from "Yuppi" with any alcohol containing "chemistry", - the resort "theaters" are ready to perceive any action as a relic of "high art in the immediate vicinity of the place sanatorium rehabilitation ... There are, of course, exceptions, but before them you need to "cut" to the center of Sochi in a fire-breathing train or bus along the serpentine of the "death road" Dzhubga - Adler ....

Well, okay, - I was going to talk about a good and high-quality action - the musical "Squirrel and Strelka", which premiered on the eve of Cosmonautics Day on the stage of the capital's recreation center MIIT. The musical is based on the popular cartoon Belka and Strelka.
The very first and strongest impression is that the musical was made with love in the Motherland, to its recent Soviet past.

Only the lazy did not write about the fact that Russia (read the USSR - Auth.) is a country with an unpredictable past. And if historians still have the opportunity to "touch the source" - the historical documents of that time, then people of art are either deprived of this opportunity or ignore it in search of only the "artistic" paradigm that they know.
Taking into account the fact that a generation that grew up after the collapse of the USSR is coming into art, two mutually exclusive features have emerged. On the one hand, we see works about Soviet people who all lived in the Gulags (the film "The Edge", for example), and on the other hand, on screens and stages - a well-fed, contented life of people, all of whom lived at VDNKh ( the film "Spy", for example), made visually according to the principle - "A loser paints the walls of the ancient Kremlin with a delicate color" ....
It is obvious that the truth is somewhere between these polar delights of today's art youth.
The musical "Belka and Strelka" very well avoided political polarity, which makes it ideal for family viewing, in which adults nostalgic about their youth, or about the youth of their parents, and children learn that we were the first in space - today's Russians, descendants of Soviet people... This is very important, because in Rome, for example, - in the Museum of Cosmonautics - the era of controlled space flights in the film that is shown there for visitors begins with the flights of Americans ....
There are a lot of nuances in the musical, both musical and visual. On the one hand, the scenery, reminiscent of the film "Circus", on the other hand, cutting-edge 3D technology. On the one hand, lyrical melodies reminiscent of the songs of Helena Velikanova, Mark Bernes, Bulat Okudzhava, on the other hand, rap dances and hits in the style of The Untouchables and Garik Sukachev. And what else is very captivating is the absolute dedication with which all the actors involved in the production, without exception, work. Even from the last row you can see how their eyes burn, how they “plow” live, and it’s also clear that it gives them pleasure. This mood is instantly conveyed to the audience, and the children, who, by definition, do not accept falsehood, begin to dance in chairs and clap without prompting from adults ...
After the premiere, I had a chance to talk with one of the main creators of the musical "Squirrel and Strelka" - General Director of the KinoAtis company Vadim Sotskov, the creator of a series of animated films about Belka and Strelka, which have now been embodied on stage.

1. Why do people bother and put on such complex productions as a musical? Why not a life-size puppet show or a children's party?

Vadim Sotskov
The musical, as a genre, presupposes a high level of staging, and we try to produce only high-quality products. KinoAtis is an animation film studio staffed by top-class professionals in their field. A series of animated films under the name Belka and Strelka, released in cooperation with the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, is one of the main large projects of the studio at the present time. All projects were completed at a high level, which has been repeatedly noted by both industry experts and viewers. Animated film Belka and Strelka. Star Dogs” was the first Russian feature film released in 3D, received numerous awards at Russian and international film festivals and the most prestigious Russian prize – the Golden Eagle as the best animated film in 2010. The series “Belka and Strelka. The Naughty Family” breaks popularity records on Russian TV. Therefore, we approached the creation of a theatrical show for children seriously in order to adequately present the well-known and loved by many films on stage. By the way, we are also planning a life-size puppet show, primarily for those small towns in Russia where there is simply no suitable stage for showing a musical. But we hope that it will be interesting.
In addition, we ourselves are parents, and the interests of children, and not only our own, but also all our young viewers, their needs are not an empty phrase for us at all, we know them, we study them, we focus on them. I wanted to make a real high-quality production for all the children. Actually, it was the application of the children that prompted us to create the performance.

2. And how did it happen?

Vadim Sotskov
- Well, not exactly children, but the owners of regional theater and concert halls, who complain about the shortage of children's theatrical repertoire in the regions. About a year ago, one of the owners of such a hall called our company and asked if we had a performance of Belka and Strelka? Without blinking an eye, we replied that we were already betting. And so the story of the musical began, I had to fulfill the promise.

3. Why a musical?

Vadim Sotskov
- Children are cheerful people, and what fun without music and dancing? And only when the work began to boil, we realized what a serious matter we got involved in. After all, a musical is the most complex and risky "undertaking" of all that can be staged in the theater. At some point, it even became a little scary. But when they listened to the first versions of the songs and music written by the composer Andrei Kosinsky, the feeling of uncertainty disappeared, it became clear that the basis of the performance was already there, and the result would be very good.

4. You won’t believe it, but I celebrated this New Year in the campaign of my friend, cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov, and on January 1 we watched the cartoon “Belka and Strelka”, which his son Kirill gave him. Yuri Valentinovich's reaction to the cartoon is a separate story, but it is felt that you are familiar with the professional features of the life of the inhabitants of Star City, and even with their slang.

Vadim Sotskov:
- That's what we're talking about. The idea of "Squirrels and Strelka", I mean the film, was originally born after watching the documentary footage of the chronicle. When Sergey Zernov, the general producer of the entire Belka and Strelka series of films, as well as the musical, and I watched a documentary film about the flight of astronaut dogs into Earth’s orbit at the Central Science Film Festival a few years ago, it became clear that this is an excellent topic for large projects - very lively and heroic at the same time. In the film, we tried to take into account all the realities of the events that took place, down to the smallest detail. Up to the fact that Belka had puppies after the flight, which became the prototype of our funny puppies from the series "Naughty Family".

4. Does this historicity find a place in the musical?

Vadim Sotskov:
- The stage dictates its own rules and limitations, it is impossible to embody everything in the performance the same way as in the film, there is also the concept of figurative expressiveness of the characters on the stage, which requires neglecting some details. Here I will give such a case. Initially, the costume of Kazbek, one of the main characters, the coach of the cosmonaut team, looked a little strange - it combined a tunic, referring to the harsh Stalinist times, a "Pinochet" cap with a tall crown, giant Brezhnev orders attached directly to the tunic. The costume, representing a wild mixture of elements of military clothing from different times and peoples, painted the image of the hero as a kind of evil and cruel, stupid military man, an overseer, a cog in a punitive totalitarian colossus. Meanwhile, everything connected with space, and this is the turn of the 1950s and 60s, belongs to a different era - the era of romantics, enthusiasts, intellectuals, conquerors of stellar space. Having completely changed the costume of the hero, we stood up for history and for those who built our space industry, and made the image of Kazbek more noble, “humane”, so to speak about a dog.

5. Question: Do such projects as a musical pay off, what are your estimates of the commercial component?

Vadim Sotskov
- For the production of the musical, we chose a team that has been successfully operating in the children's entertainment market for many years, being one of its leaders - the Triumph company. Her musicals - "The Bremen Town Musicians", "Lukomorye", "The Kid and Carlson", "Treasure Island" are very high-quality shows that have been on the Moscow stages with full houses for several years already, paying off and making a profit. It is important that all these performances are made completely independently, and are not an adaptation of well-known Broadway musicals to the Russian stage. So the positive experience of our colleagues allows us to count on the commercial return of the musical Belka and Strelka, despite the serious scale and technical complexity, and hence the cost of the production. Alexey Peganov, General Director of the Triumph HRC, attracted a very talented and professional team to create the performance. In addition, the musical is staged on a theme that is now popular with children thanks to cartoons. Together, this allows us to count on commercial success. At least at the first performances, the halls were full, which means there is interest in the production.

6. And what does the serious scale of the production mean?
Vadim Sotskov:
The musical involves more than 25 actors simultaneously taking the stage, a lot of costume changes, 3D scenery, flights over the auditorium ...

7. Flights to where?

Vadim Sotskov:
- In space, of course ...

8. You said the musical is going on with full houses. Are the tickets expensive?

Vadim Sotskov
- Tickets are not the most expensive for such a performance, their price allows you to go to the musical with the whole family without much damage to the household budget. The play actively promotes the theme of a close-knit family, mutual understanding, respect and mutual assistance between children and parents. So, the audience should come to the show with the whole family. Unfortunately, there are children who do not have a family. This is a separate, completely unhappy topic. But they can also watch the performance, we actively invite children from orphanages or children from low-income families to the musical, making going to the theater affordable for them too. We have already visited the pupils of the charity fund Ksenia Alferova, Oksana Fedorova and many other children.

9. Do you study the opinion of children about the play? What are the reviews?

Vadim Sotskov
- A special study has not yet been carried out, but the reviews are positive. It is not surprising, considering how much soul the creators have invested in this show. In general, everyone who staged the production took it not only extremely seriously and informally, but with such an extremely high share of participation, as if they were trying to tell not about the dogs that flew into space, but about themselves, about their dreams, about their childhood, about their parents. The same can be said about the work of the actors - they play with such rapture and enthusiasm that sometimes you yourself want to go on stage with them. The performance is very far from what is called a "scheduled production", it is very warm and lively. There was not a single indifferent person at the performance who "just did his job." Very different people, with different interests and ambitions, really became one team, united by the theme of Belka and Strelka. This suggests that the theme of space, space pioneers, has been sitting very deeply in each of us since childhood, somewhere in the subcortex, and Yuri Gagarin and Belka with Strelka are just like relatives, like family members for so many people of different ages, status and life experience, real, not invented, national heroes. I hope that this mood will be transmitted to all young viewers. An excellent indicator of the attitude of children to the performance and the biggest compliment to the creators were the questions from our young viewers on the site after watching the musical: “Will there be a sequel? So can't wait to see it!"

10. By the way, will there be a sequel?

Vadim Sotskov
- Will definitely! Only so far not on stage, but in the cinema. The continuation of the adventures of Belka, Strelka, Kazbek, Venya and other heroes very soon, by the next new year, the audience will see in the new full-length 3D animated film Belka and Strelka. Lunar Adventures. You have already guessed where the action will take place. But what will happen there, on the other side of the moon, invisible to us, you will find out by watching the film. We promise an exciting and unexpected plot, dynamic action, a lot of humor, special effects and very high-quality animation.

AFTERWORD
The creators of the musical did not mention another very important story, in which they also became involved. Performances on the topic of space exploration help children make their dreams come true, gain self-confidence, find a common language with their parents, and even learn something new about the history of their country. But most importantly, space helps children overcome a serious illness and gain a second life. The media have already talked about the charity event of the detachment of Russian cosmonauts “We want to show you the Earth”, which was started by Hero of Russia Yuri Lonchakov in his last (cosmonauts do not use the word last - Auth.) flight into space. It so happened that the flight coincided with the treatment of the boy Sasha Gavrilov at the Moscow Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology, to whom Yuri Valentinovich sent his photos from space and even called. The boy recovered and he and Yuri Lonchakov met and became friends, and the photographs that the cosmonaut sent from orbit to Sasha formed the basis of the charity photo exhibitions “We want to show you the Earth”, which a detachment of Russian cosmonauts shows in various cities of Russia and then donates to children's oncology centers. Now this exhibition is planned in the halls of the MIIT Palace of Culture, where the musical takes place, and after the end of the show it will be given to sick children along with other gifts from the creators of the musical Belka and Strelka and ITAR-TASS employees, information sponsors of the action. The creators of the musical are planning a special charity screening of the performance for children who are now being treated at the Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology.

Reviews

Hello, dear Oleg Vladimirovich!
Totally agree with you. Two hands for! And about the pedagogical significance of such actions (as a teacher), and about the great importance of the Russian space theme (as a physicist), and about the charitable significance for sick children (as a person).
But I didn't watch the musical. Only the animated series with the son. But at the expense of musicals - you're right. Now you need to write more reviews of the newfangled musicals of the Moscow Operetta Theater "Count Orlov" and "Monte Cristo" - it seems like they are not Broadway and the libretto with verses was written by Yuli Kim.
And as for the Sochi topic - look at my page "Sochi coast" - how the one who lived there can be any adjustments you make. Only for the Olympics, a lot has changed there. The train "Swallow", for example, is completely unattractive and comfortable;)
All the very best to you!
Sincerely,

“Oh, you people. What was not in the movie, then you don’t need to know, right?”
(quote from the movie "Dogma")

It seems that someone at the top decided that it would be time for our children to learn the history of their native country. The surest way to knowledge goes, of course, through blue screens.

At the very least, we got acquainted with epic heroes a couple of years ago, the time has come to resurrect the glory of the USSR in the hearts of young viewers.

But we have learned to make our cartoons! The first time I personally watched “Belka and Strelka” on the mobile phone of a work colleague, she uses it as a radical mood booster. Perhaps I agree.

I don’t know why Gleb uses “Belka and Strelka”, but I looked YouTube up to the holes. I recommend to fellow cartoonists to urgently bungle something similar about Yuri Gagarin, otherwise the palm of the conquest of space has gone irrevocably to our smaller brothers. I won’t be surprised if they already believe that Belka and Strelka flew into space on April 12th.

Glory to the USSR

May passed under the flag of the USSR. Not a day passed that the child did not ask when we would go to the musical "Squirrel and Strelka", which he had been dreaming of since the moment. In addition, their class was taken on an excursion to, where he learned a lot of interesting things about the real heroes of history.

It turns out that the cartoon is not lying! There was also a special center for training dogs for space flights, and the dogs were only female, and there is a real fact that one of Belka's puppies was presented to the American president. And the fact that Squirrel was more sociable and friendly, and the fact that initially the dogs had intricate nicknames, was also reflected in the film. The luxurious name Bella Raimondovna immediately comes to mind.

Further more. Gleb watched "Legend number 17" and began to call himself Valery Kharlamov. And his impressionable mother sat down to watch real matches of the USSR-Canada super series. And so we already got used to it both in the 60s and in the 70s, which were not at all surprised by young people in red pioneer ties at the entrance to the recreation center of MIIT, and a typical dusty-empiric Soviet interior with poor ventilation and poor audibility was also perceived as due.

And if, instead of the dog Kazbek, Menshikov in the form of Anatoly Tarasov had come on stage and started shouting: “Protect the gates, Bella Raimondovna,” and dogs in spacesuits would have started running with sticks on the ice, we would not be surprised either. As they say, this is your homeland, son.

The image of the era

60s, that is. Something doesn't look like it. Unfortunately, the episodes in the statue of the Worker and Collective Farm Girl were completely removed from the performance, probably due to the complexity of the scenery. From the images of Moscow, there were garbage dumps, the Produkty store, the constantly remembered Arbat and the alleged trip to the Bolshoi to the Nutcracker. I am tormented by doubt about the circus in which Belka performs. It's probably a traveling circus tent. But definitely not a stationary circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard or Vernadsky. And he was probably at VDNKh. There are many places.

A colorful character passes and heralds the end of the first act of a curvaceous ice-cream lady. Offers soda, ice cream, and ladies and something stronger 🙂 I love such flirting with the most respectable audience.

In the second act, there is no connection with real time at all. First, they show the space training center, more like a barracks somewhere in the US military base. The image of the American army turned out to be very close to the creators of the musical, and the audience is more familiar with it, the scenes turned out to be very impressive. I can’t say anything about a reliable imitation of space, I haven’t been.

Bella Raymondovna, Strelka and rats Benjamin

A wonderful trio of space explorers. Together with the famous Belka and Strelka, Venya from the rodent family also visited space. As Gleb said authoritatively, they also tried to send rats into space. Perhaps this fact is reflected in the script. But without him it would be boring, you see.
There must be at least one rational male being next to the pampered, but then discovered the strength of character, circus performer Bella Raimondovna and the girl with a courtyard upbringing, but very well-fed-looking Strelka. Yes, and we also say that we lived poorly. Judging by the well-fedness of Strelka and Venya, they snickered.

The actress who plays Squirrel looks very organic in her role as a small white dog. He sings and plays well. But Venya, of course, pleases the most. Well, this is a role, such a trump role. Like Silver in Treasure Island. But you also need to know how to play it. Not only the audience likes the beautiful Venya.

In the performance, there was one connoisseur of its significant merits - a local psychiatrist, but rather a maniac-murderer Cat. The children probably immediately guessed that it was a cat. But until he let out an identifying meow, I was at a loss as to who it was.

Love will suddenly come when you do not expect it at all ...

And what about without her! From somewhere, after all, Belka's puppies appeared ... And women always love men in uniform, fit, strong and courageous. And with such a commanding voice.

The romantic relationship of the dog Kazbek and Belka begins almost immediately, as soon as our heroes find themselves in Baikonur. And the culminating duet also takes place in a very romantic place - in outer space. Two figures in huge white space suits hover over the stage and sing... Not bad. The kids love it.

The kids really like it

It is clear that the musical is intended mainly for children. For adults, there are only a few moments (among them the already mentioned episode with an ice-cream lady) and this phrase of Venya “my mother is a guinea pig” :). But judging by the fact that very young children are taken to the musical, parents are not at all up to what is happening on stage. Looking after the child is the main task.
