Shorthand skills. Speed reading for children

24.09.2019

Whether you're reading a textbook for a philosophy seminar or the morning paper, reading can be tedious. Master the technique of speed reading to complete this task much faster. Speed reading will impair understanding of the material, but with proper practice, you can partially overcome this defect.

Steps

Part 1

Learn to read faster

    Stop saying words to yourself. Almost every reader mentally pronounces the text (subvocalization) or is distracted by repeating the word. This helps the reader remember the terms, but it also slows down the reading speed. Here are a few ways to minimize this habit:

    Close the words you have already read. When reading, your eyes often return to the words you have already read. Basically, these are short-term movements that do not improve understanding in any way. Use a bookmark to close words after reading them, weaning yourself from this habit.

    • These "reverse jumps" also occur when you fail to understand the material. If your eyes jump back a few words or lines, this is a sign that you need to slow down.
  1. Let's move on to eye movement. While reading, your eyes move in jerks, stopping at certain words and skipping others. Reading only happens when your eyes stop. If you reduce the number of movements per line of text, you will learn to read much faster. But be careful - there have been studies that have found the limit of what the reader is able to see at a time:

    • You can read eight letters to the right of your eye position, but only four to the left. It's about two or three words at a time.
    • You notice letters 9-15 spaces to the right, but are unable to read them.
    • Ordinary readers cannot read the words on the other lines. Learning to skip lines and still understand the material is extremely difficult.
  2. Reduce the amount of movement your eyes make. Normally, your brain decides where to move your eyes based on how long or familiar the next word is. You will be able to read faster if you instead train your eyes to jump to specific places on the page. Try the following exercise:

    • Take a bookmark and place it above a line of text.
    • Draw an "X" on the tab above the first word.
    • Draw another X on the same line. Put it three words further for good understanding, five words for simple texts, and seven words to skim key points.
    • Continue drawing "X" signs at the same interval until you reach the end of the line.
    • Try to read the line as soon as possible, dropping the bookmark down and concentrating only on the text under each "X".
  3. Read faster than you can understand the text. Many programs are built on the principle of increasing the speed of reading with the help of reflexes, so that the brain gradually learns to adjust to the new pace. This method has not been thoroughly studied. Your speed of moving through the text will undoubtedly increase, but you will understand little or nothing at all. Try this method if you're aiming for maximum reading speed and hope that a few days of practice will help you understand the material better. Here's how to do it:

    • Follow the text in pencil. Come up with a phrase that will take exactly one line of text to pronounce at a calm pace.
    • Try reading at the speed of a pencil for two minutes. Even if you don't understand anything, concentrate on the text and keep your eyes open for a full two minutes.
    • Rest for a minute and then speed up. Now try to read for three minutes, but now the pencil should cross two lines while you pronounce the phrase.
  4. Use programs for speed reading. If the above methods did not help you achieve your goal, try a quick sequential visual presentation. With this technique, a phone application or computer program displays text one word at a time. This allows you to choose any reading speed. But do not raise the speed too high, otherwise you will not be able to remember most of the words. This method is useful for quickly skimming through the news, but not while studying or reading for pleasure.

    Part 2

    Quick text view
    1. Know when a quick look is worth it. This way of reading can be used for a general familiarization with the text without a deep understanding of it. You can quickly skim through the newspaper to find an interesting article, or identify key points by skimming through a textbook before a test. A quick look is not a substitute for a full read.

      Read the section titles and headings. Read only chapter titles and all subheadings at the beginning of large sections. Read the titles of all news articles or magazine content.

      Read the beginning and end of the section. All paragraphs in textbooks usually contain an introduction and a conclusion. For other types of text, read the first and last paragraph of the chapter or article.

      • Read faster if you're familiar with the topic, but don't try to outrun yourself. You will save yourself time by scrolling through the extra text, but it is still important to understand the meaning of what you read.
    2. Circle important words in the text. If you want to learn more, then instead of reading normally, quickly go over the text with your eyes. Now that you've got the gist of the section, you'll be able to highlight keywords and mark important areas. Stop and highlight the following words:

Before engaging in speed reading, the child is taught to read. Obviously, but true. As a rule, parents do this with preschoolers. And quite often they make a number of pedagogical oversights. Here are the main mistakes parents make and how to solve them.

  1. Name the correct names of the letters of the alphabet: "em", "er", "el", "te". The child does not distinguish between a letter and a sound, it will be difficult for him to combine letters into words. Instead of letters call sounds, not letters: [m], [r], [l], [t] and so on.
  2. Use alphabet with pictures. Helps to learn letters, but interferes with reading (for example, it is difficult to understand why the syllable "MA" is obtained from the addition of "machine" and "stork"). Exit: use different methodological material- cubes, magnets, soft letters, pictures.
  3. It is forbidden to move your finger along the lines, offering to return to a new line with a single glance. The child gets tired quickly. It will be right allow to drive through the lines with a finger or a bookmark.
  4. They learn to spell by adding "m" + "a" \u003d "ma". The child gets tired, making "extra" intellectual efforts. Need to teach reading by syllables, even preferably from books where words are divided into syllables.
  5. Use one of the . This lays down certain patterns that may interfere with reading in the future. Costs try to combine methods, after consulting with a psychologist or teacher you trust.

If you are worried that the child is “stuck” on syllabic reading, he can’t read the whole words in any way, watch this webinar (from 2.30 minutes), where teacher Olga Lysenko shares effective methods for teaching children 6-10 years old to read more fluently.

When to start teaching speed reading?

The positions of teachers are similar in one thing: you should not teach fluent reading to a child who still reads by syllables. You can start classes when he already knows how to effortlessly read the words in full and understand whole phrases. Otherwise, reading comprehension will suffer. In addition, the duration of the lessons is not for every kid. As a standard, it is suggested to do 60 minutes a day, in several approaches, if necessary.

If you study for 60 minutes a day, after 10 days the reading speed, taking into account the understanding of the text, should increase by 2-5 times.

So, too early training is rather harmful. This is where the experts agree. But regarding the timely start, their positions differ. Some believe that it is necessary to start in elementary school, because in middle and high school you will have to “break” the usual, but incorrect reading skills. It takes energy and demotivates.

speed reading- literally fast reading. This skill is acquired by people for different purposes, some manage to process documents faster, others read more, others put it in the treasury of their intellectual abilities. In any case, the skill of speed reading brings many benefits to those who have mastered it.

For development speed reading special programs and exercises are used, which increase the results of quick and high-quality perception of information.

The development of speed reading

In order to achieve good results, you need to practice regularly, and in order to learn how to read quickly, you also need to try, because the development of speed reading is a skill that is achieved only by working on yourself.

For most people, an increase in reading speed to 500-700 words will be sufficient, and this speed is achieved quite easily. For those who want to learn to read, understand and memorize more than 700 words per minute, they will most likely have to work hard and go through special programs and techniques.

Sign up for our Speed Reading course in 30 days. If you are now reading 200 words per minute, then after a month of training you will read 500-900 words per minute. Two months later, 900-1800 words per minute. Three months later, 1800-4500 words per minute. And in 4-6 months of training, you can achieve a reading speed of 10,000 words per minute.

Since 2015, 1507 people from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Orenburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kiev, Minsk and other cities have studied under our program.

If you learn speed reading on your own, then it will be difficult to achieve such results and it will take much more time. Without a special program, it is unlikely that you will be able to read more than 500 words per minute.

For comparison, it is difficult for an athlete without special training and a coach not to achieve the results that athletes achieve through special programs and under the supervision of a coach.

How to read?

Remember your childhood, at first you were taught to disassemble letters, then read syllables from them, then read simple words syllable by syllable. Later, you quickly read small words, but large and especially unfamiliar words were sometimes read not even the first time. Step by step, year after year, as a child, you learned to read faster and faster, and your brain memorized and recognized more and more words. No one has ever taught you to read in any other way. At best, you were taught to navigate the text, read fluently, understand its structure and somehow memorize it, so that later you can study it in more detail without mixing everything in your head.

So, first there were letters, then syllables, then words and the most commonly used phrases. People who learn to read even faster read in phrases, lines, and even several lines at a time, and then all at once in paragraphs and even pages.

Also speed reading You can also teach children, in some cases they can learn even faster than adults and they like it. The main thing is to develop the habit of following certain rules, such as not going back and concentrating on the content of the text, automatically following the rules of the chosen methodology and not thinking.

It should be noted that skill fast reading requires long and painstaking work, so first you need to solve a few questions:

  • How fast do I want to learn to read
  • How fast should I read
  • How much time am I willing to spend daily/weekly exercising

There are several ways to quickly read:

Selective reading

Selective reading is the skill of quickly structuring text and understanding its structure, selecting and reading the desired block of text of any length. This approach is used when it makes no sense to read the entire text, but you just need to get specific data from it, for example, the definition of a word in a dictionary or some technical, financial, and similar information.

It is worth noting that this method is not suitable for reading fiction, because fiction requires complete immersion of the reader. There may be exceptions if you learn something specific from a work of art, for example, why and how Raskolnikov killed the pawnbroker grandmother in Dostoevsky's book Crime and Punishment, but this is no longer structured text recognition, but fluent reading, similar to rewinding a video cassette.

Fast reading of the entire text

Quick reading- this is when the entire text is read at high speed, with full understanding and memorization of the necessary information.

In this way, you can read any texts, starting from technical and scientific texts, and ending with works of art. True, it is worth noting that literary texts are more difficult to read, because they are read for the soul. This means that you need to have time to immerse yourself in the text and enjoy it, unless of course there is such a need for this.

It is also not always convenient to read beautiful romantic works at the limit of one's abilities, when you just want to relax in the evening after a working day. But if you are impatient to find out what is ahead and emotions capture and carry away along with the book, then the person himself, without noticing it, begins to accelerate and read comfortably, as quickly as he can.

I warn you that when reading quickly with a good immersion in the text, you can get so carried away that the world around you will cease to exist and fade among the bright images and pictures of the book you are reading, which will also improve with the development of the skill and reading the book will be like a beautiful film that was shot personally for you with your brain.

So beautiful minutes of pages and hours of books fly by unnoticed...

I had the experience of reading both those and other texts, and literary ones were always read more slowly, and if you do not maintain the skill speed reading and read only fiction, then this skill may eventually fall to colloquial speech.

Reading at speeds above 800 words per minute

  1. Stop pronouncing a readable text to yourself, because the speed of speaking even "to yourself" can be no more than 800, maximum (in my experience) 900 words per minute.

    At first, it will be very difficult to wean the brain used to read for centuries without speaking, only with a glance, but then it will be easier. The main thing is not to start speaking again until the skill gets stronger.

  2. Do not go back, read only forward, even if it became incomprehensible.

    Returning, you will only slow down the whole process and then you will not be able to read quickly, because you will return every time. And the brain is lazy, every time it will ask you to go back until you wean it.

    At first, when reading quickly, many details in the text will be incomprehensible and you will want to go back and reread the text again and again, but then the brain adapts and will make fewer and fewer such errors until their number tends to zero.

    It is like an athlete who lifts more weight or speed than he is comfortable with in order for the muscles to grow and develop under load. It is the same here, we take the brain out of the comfort zone and force it to train.

  3. View Width. When reading more than 300 words per minute, you have to move your eyes very quickly through the text. This is useful when reading for a short time, but when reading for a long time, the eyes get very tired and may not even have time to move.

    Therefore, it is necessary to increase the width of the view, to develop peripheral vision.

PhotoReading

Assumes reading by shooting. Text ranging from paragraph to page in size is photographed by the eye, and all information is immediately recognized and understood by the brain, it will take long and hard work to develop such a skill.

How to quickly develop PhotoReading?

The course "Film Reading in 7 Days" will help us with this, which, unlike traditional courses for the development of speed reading, increases the reading speed to 30,000 words per minute in about 7 days, even if you have not studied speed reading at all.

This course uses Andrey Patrushev's proprietary methodology and is taught by the author of the methodology himself. The bottom line is that in a short time you look through the whole book in different ways in a special program, which was also developed by the author of this course.

After one or more views of the book at breakneck speed, you will need to complete the secret exercises from the course in order to get the information you read from the subconscious. It sounds fantastic, but it is also not cheap, since the technique is new and so far no one seems to have copied it.

This is a unique technique. It is used in schools of additional education, for classes at home with parents. What is its peculiarity and how to teach a child to read quickly, you will learn from our article.

From this article you will learn

At what age to start

There are several opinions about the age at which you should start teaching your child to read fluently and meaningfully.

In the beginning, experts advise.

According to the method of Zaitsev, Doman, Montessori

The optimal period is from 3 to 7 years. The brain of a preschooler - a first grader remembers information quickly, firmly.

According to the Waldorf School

For a strong assimilation of the skill, children must grow up to 10-12 years. This is due to the fact that elementary school students perceive well the information that is pronounced at the usual pace of speech. By the middle link, the ability to understand fast streams of phonemes will improve. Reading skills are accelerated.

Combining and analyzing both opinions, we can say for sure that it is not worth doing speed reading with first-graders and preschoolers stubbornly, under duress. It is better to postpone this until a later period, when the child matures. In elementary school, use preparatory exercises to develop memory, attention, and articulation. These classes are useful for increasing the rate of assimilation of the text in the future.

Important! For early learning of the alphabet and syllables, use Zaitsev's cubes. They can be used from 6 months of age to introduce letters in a playful way.

Don't make these mistakes

Often, even capable children show poor readiness for reading due to methodological errors at the initial stage of teaching syllables. Self-study at home. Parents commit the following typical violations:

Call the baby a letter, not a sound

Learning letters with an overtone will lead to problems with reading. The child adds syllables like this: “pea-pea” instead of “pa-pa”. Short and clear pronunciation is the main condition for a fast pace of reading.

Build syllables from individual letters

Assignment: look, “b” and “o”, it turns out “bo” - methodologically incorrect. Teach your children to stretch out the vowel immediately, without a pause between sounds: “bo-o-o-o.” Avoid spelling words. It’s easier for children, but it takes time to analyze words into constituent parts, the meaning of phrases is lost.

Long reading texts

Conduct classes often, spend 5-7 minutes on one. It is better to read a short passage, a couple of sentences at a good speed than to keep a student at the table for half an hour and force him to study. Short lessons are more effective. Do not forget to take breaks between exercises, about 2-3 hours.

Important! Consider the mental characteristics of the child: the amount of memory, the period of maximum concentration of attention. If a teenager can concentrate and study for 15-20 minutes, it is not tiring, increase the duration of the lesson, but reduce their number per day to one or two.

From simple to complex

Speed reading training is based on the ability to perceive words as a whole, without dividing them into syllables. At the initial stage, use short words consisting of two or three sounds. For example, "house", "cat". In the future, the baby will not read them, recognize them by letter. He will see this word in the text and immediately pronounce it. This is the essence of the speed reading technique.

Preparation for the lesson: write the simplest words on a piece of paper, one at a time. Show them one by one. Gradually increase the pace of changing words. Replace three-letter lexemes with words of four-five-seven letters after a solid assimilation of the material covered.

Words (“house”, “forest”) are replaced by complex ones (“tree”, “car”), then phrases and phrases. Make up sentences using vocabulary that is familiar to students. For example, he can read "who" and "house" separately. Offer the phrase: “Who is in the house”, then add “lives” to this. Get an offer.

You can start reading short texts when the student has learned to quickly read phrases and phrases. The pace of learning is different for every child. Do not rush if the student hesitated. Sometimes you need to go back to simple, already covered material. This will increase interest in classes, reduce emotional stress, and set you up for success.

Important! As the first books, use bright literature, with pictures, an interesting plot. A boring curriculum will not do.

First grade exercises

The first grade is the most difficult psychologically, but a very interesting period of life. During the first months at school, the baby adapts to the new team, the teacher, learns discipline and learns a lot of new things. It is not recommended to start fluent reading classes in the first half of the year. A first-grader simply does not have enough strength and emotions for an additional load at home.

If you feel that the child can and wants to become the first in reading technique among classmates, then conduct lessons in the form of a game, without forcing you to sit at a book for a long time.

According to Professor I.T. Fedorenko - the author of his own method of teaching reading, the effectiveness of classes does not depend on the amount of time spent on the lesson, but on its quality. Organize a clear scheme: two to three times a day, do simple exercises for 5-6 minutes. If the student is not in a good mood, tired, postpone the lesson for a couple of hours, let him rest and tune in to work.

Important! Rest means a walk, active games, lunch or an extra afternoon snack. Do not allow to sit near the TV, computer. Watching cartoons or online games on the Web do not unload the student psychologically.

If you decide to study with a first-grader at home, without the help of professionals, use the following exercises:

Automated reading of syllables

Download online for free or make your own syllable table. For example, this one:

A first grader can get acquainted with her in the process of learning the alphabet.

The syllabary table is used in every lesson. A first grader reads one to three lines in one lesson, gradually speeding up the pace. If the training takes place in a team, first the lines are pronounced in chorus, then individually.

Thanks to the syllable table, the student easily understands the structure of words, learns to read words faster - automatically. Letter combinations are pronounced vertically and horizontally. In an introductory lesson, it is better to carefully work out one line with the same vowel: GA, YES, etc. Read the syllables lingeringly, without dividing into sounds.

The use of the syllabary table is invaluable in speech therapy classes: the articulatory apparatus is trained, problematic sounds are posed. Simultaneously with the improvement of speech, the child acquires spelling skills, neutralizes the tendency to dysorphography.

Choral reading

Used as a warm-up at the beginning of the lesson. Kids receive sheets of paper with text, preferably poetic, or sayings. The material is read in chorus at an average pace. Then each student pronounces the chosen tongue twister in a whisper or loudly. This trains articulation.

Complex of tasks

Includes the following exercises:

  1. multiple reading for speed and time;

Children are given a text. They read it on their own, quietly. The teacher marks 1 minute. After stopping, the children mark with a pencil the place where they stopped. Rest 3-5 minutes. At this time, tongue twisters can be spoken. Do articulation exercises.

  1. reading at a good pace;

We take a familiar text in our hands, again we read for a minute. Compare the first and second result. More often, children read a familiar passage faster, making fewer mistakes. Success creates a positive attitude. Let's move on to new material.

  1. familiarity with the new text and reading it with expression;

For lessons, it is better to take such texts that cannot be read fluently in a minute. Children should have a piece of new material for speed reading training. Read an unfamiliar part of the text in chorus, quickly, but with expression.

Use a set of exercises in each lesson for 1-2 weeks.

Mission "Tugboat"

Lexical material is read together with the parent. The adult chooses such a pace that it is not difficult or too easy for the child. Two or three sentences are read in chorus, the parent falls silent, continuing to read silently.

The kid does not stop either, reads to himself, trying to maintain the set speed. After one or two sentences, the adult begins to say the text aloud. If the student does not slow down, he will read the same thing with the parent.

This exercise can be done in pairs. Children assign roles. A strong student plays the role of a tug, and a weak one pulls up behind him. For the first lessons according to this scheme, use a hint: run your finger over the text at the moment of silent reading. The student who follows the strong one will continue to read aloud, focusing on the partner's prompt and his speed.

Jump-stop

The exercise is like a game. Develops attention, visual memory, orientation in the text.

The task is performed as follows. The child is sitting at the table, in front of him is a text. At the command of an adult, reading begins in a high-speed rhythm. When the order to stop sounds, the child closes his eyes and rests for 10-15 seconds. Then the teacher gives the command to read. The first grader needs to quickly find a stop in the text and continue reading. This is an easy way to improve attention and visual memory.

Important! No need to help find the stopping place in the book. Reception is based on the principle of complete independence.

half

Prepare didactic material. Write words of two or three syllables on an A4 sheet, large. For example, "cat", "spoon", "girl". Then cut the sheets so that the words can be folded from two halves. Shuffle the cards.

Suggest in a playful way to find and put together parts of words for speed. But speed is not the most important thing here.

A properly conducted lesson develops imagination, memory.

For reference! An interesting method of teaching children to read from the cradle are Doman-Manichenko cards. These are pictures with words. They are shown to the child quickly, 2-3 seconds. Four to ten a day. After 5 days, the baby will name the words that are written on the card. The method is based on photomemory.

And here is another interesting way, which is very simple and at the same time effective.

For children over 8 years old

Continue to improve your reading pace in the second grade. Children at the age of eight are independent and fast. They have outgrown the first-grader assignments, so offer them other interesting activities and games:

Looking for a word, a line

The meaning of the game: the student finds all the words in the text that begin with one letter. Searching for a whole phrase is a complicated version of the task.

Exercise teaches attention, develops the left hemisphere of the brain - language.

Insert letters

The second grader is offered a text with missing letters. To read it and understand, you need to think of endings, prefixes. This speeds up the rate of perception of the text in the future, helps to combine letters into whole words.

Fixing the error

The teacher reads the text, the children follow. The teacher deliberately makes a mistake in the end of the word, the root, etc. The task of the student is to correct the inaccuracy.

Reading at speed

The second-grader independently measures the reading technique, noting the minute, keeps a diary of success. Normally, by the second grade, children read at least 70 words, in the third - 100 words, in the fourth - 120.

Playing Hidden Words

The game is like reading anagrams. Children find words in the box with letters. It looks like this:

Words can be selected on one topic or randomly. It is better for primary school students to provide a list of words to be found, leaving the task of isolating them on the field.

And one more option that you can print out and use with your child.

We read and count

The second grader reads the text and counts the given sounds. For example, in the following poem, find out the number of sounds "o".

The ball is bouncing along the track

We can't catch up with a fast ball.

The skill of multitasking, concentration of attention develops.

Special exercises

Expanding the field of view

  1. Shulge table.

Needed to increase the viewing angle. For second graders, use this version of the table:

The child looks for numbers with his eyes in order: from 1 to 25, for example, only black or only red. Record time, limit it gradually. Searching for numbers in the table will increase the rate of speech, since the student will see more words with peripheral vision, that is, subconsciously read them in advance.

  1. Wedge tables.

The student needs to concentrate his gaze on the upper numbers, gradually going down. The numbers are spoken aloud. After several exercises, the student will see all the signs on the left and right at the same time. Download methodological material from letters and numbers on the Web.

Regression Suppression

Looking back at a line you have already read - regression - greatly slows down the pace of reading. To get rid of the unwanted effect, use the following training exercises:

  1. Specify the direction of reading.

Take a pointer or pencil, lead it along the lines only forward. The child intuitively follows the pointer without looking back.

  1. Close the read text.

Prepare a special bookmark for the student. Have the second grader put it on top of the text, gradually moving down as they read. So the passage read will be hidden from view. It is impossible to return to it.

  1. Check your speed constantly.

Measure your reading technique every day. To improve the result, you will always have to move forward without looking back.

Articulation suppression

  1. musical accompaniment;

We read to the music without words, then with the included song. Pay attention to understanding the meaning of the text.

  1. "Bumblebee";

Ask students to buzz while reading. This is a complex but effective method.

  1. rhythm;

Read and drum with your fingers and pencil on the table. Increase the pace gradually.

  1. lock;

We press our lips tightly, cover our mouth with our palms. Read to yourself as fast as you can.

Important! After reading, ask the student questions about the text to check reading comprehension.

Exercises to correct attention and concentration

  1. We compose words.

Take a long word. For example, "representation". Short words are made from it: “forest”, “shaft”, “toast”, “harm” and others.

  1. We find differences.

In pairs: "horse - laziness", "sleep - tone", "kitty - fox" differences are sought. It is necessary to explain in detail how they are similar and different.

  1. We change fonts.

Type texts on the PC in different fonts. Have your child read. It is necessary to gradually increase the speed of reading such texts so that attention is not focused on the size and type of font.

  1. We confuse words.

Write on a sheet of sentences with the words rearranged in the wrong order: "the bull on the go sighs sways." The task is to find a place for each word.

  1. We note the main thing.

After reading the text, you need to underline the controversial points with a pencil, highlight the main thoughts.

  1. We include both hemispheres in the work.

We read with the left and right eyes alternately. Use this technique as homework and as a warm-up in class.

  1. We make riddles.

Trick questions, tricky riddles develop attention well.

  1. We name colors.

Use this field:

Task: without reading the words, name the color with which the letters are painted.

The development of the ancipation

This skill is well developed in adults. Guessing the word according to the meaning of the text, without seeing the end of the sentence, develops when performing the following tasks:

  1. text upside down;

First, the text is read in its normal form, then it is rotated 90 ° or upside down. Worked out.

  1. ruler;

Place a wide ruler on the sides of the text. The beginning and end of the sentence will not be visible. The child will have to guess what words are written there in meaning.

  1. halves;

Now with a ruler we close the upper halves of the letters on one line. The child is reading.

Memory training

  1. visual dictation;

The child is given a text to read. Then all phrases are closed from the eyes, except for the first sentence. 7-8 seconds are allotted for memorization, the child writes from memory. Thus, the text is gradually processed completely.

  1. chain;

We read words on the same topic. For example, a forest - a tree - a cone - a bear, etc. The student listens and reproduces the chain orally, in writing. You need to start with three to five words, gradually increasing to ten to twelve.

  1. word repair;

The child is given a text with missing letters. They need to be guessed while reading. The advantage of the technique: the student keeps the meaning of the text in his head, expands his vocabulary.

Reading with an adult

Imposing reading speed is an effective teaching technique. Use the following systems of joint assignments:

  1. reading at the same time as the parent;

The adult reads aloud, the child reads to himself. The speed is constantly changing. The task of the student: do not stray.

  1. relay race;

Adult and child constantly change roles. First one reads, the other follows, then vice versa.

  1. tail;

The teacher reads the text first, the student picks up a little later, three or four words behind. Parallel playback aloud has a minus: the voices interfere with each other. You need to read in a whisper or in an undertone.

Speed Reading Books for Children

If you do not know how to teach a child to read quickly, but want to do it yourself, pay attention to the following author's materials:

The self-instruction manual is a collection of exciting tasks to increase the pace of reading, develop memory, and attention. The exercises are accompanied by detailed instructions.

The last pages of the book are a diary of success. It contains the student's data, the results of equipment checks. It motivates, makes education effective.

The manual is a collection of exercises for the development of the pace of reading in children from 6 to 17 years old. The book includes a theoretical block. Here you can find answers to questions: why a child does not read well, how to instill a love for works of art, and so on.

This is a set of benefits. It includes workbooks, success diaries, work programs, cards. The material allows you to conduct classes on speed reading, the development of memory and attention. According to parents, in 10 days of work on this program, the reading speed of children increases by one and a half to two times.

With a little effort on the part of parents, children will learn to read quickly in a couple of months. Remember that speed reading classes will have a positive impact on the child's intelligence, academic performance, and success in life.

IMPORTANT! *when copying article materials, be sure to indicate an active link to the first

Try to read without speaking the text to yourself. Now read a page of text without distraction and without rereading the sentences. Turn the book upside down and read the paragraph. It turns out? These and other simple exercises will help you master the skills of speed reading.

People who want to become professionals in their field must work through a huge array of information. In addition, there are so many in the world, but there is sorely not enough time. There is a solution - to learn to read quickly. And this is possible: quickly, up to 2 thousand words per minute, they read John F. Kennedy, Maxim Gorky and others. For example, Napoleon read one rather voluminous book every morning before breakfast, managing to mark thoughts important to him in its margins.

And the former American president, who reads at an incredible speed, developed his own, which is successfully used even now by those who want to learn it.

It can be argued that fast reading reduces reading comprehension and assimilation. But practice shows that the opposite is true: with normal reading, about half of the information is assimilated, while with speed reading 70-80%.

Why is it so? Because fast reading requires more concentration than normal reading, during which we read less carefully. We have parallel thoughts: we think about current affairs, for example, that it would be time to turn off the refrigerator, about the upcoming vacation, or we return to past events with thoughts. It is not surprising that reading progresses slowly, and new information is poorly remembered.

You can master the methods of speed reading at special trainings: 5 lessons of 3.5-4 hours are enough. Their advantage lies not only in the fact that the classes are conducted by specialists, but also in the fact that, firstly, the person who paid for the training is unlikely to want to skip classes voluntarily. Secondly, teachers form pairs of students, making classes more effective. Thus, those who risk missing a lesson will let their partner down - the obligation to him will serve as an additional incentive not to shy away from classes.

You can do it yourself. To do this, you just need a great desire, faith in the result and daily training. And if many have a desire, then with faith it will be more difficult. Let's remember how children learn to ride a bicycle: whoever thinks he will fall, really falls; those who are sure that they will immediately go, by some miracle keep their balance and go. We believe we can do it!

As for training, we do special exercises daily for 30-40 minutes during the 21st day. Psychologists believe that it takes so much time to get rid of an old habit and instill a new one.

For exercises, you need to choose a convenient time and place so that nothing distracts from reading. It is useless to do this, for example, in the subway, where it is impossible to concentrate.

What slows down reading?

1. Pronunciation of the text when reading “to yourself”, or subvocalization

This habit is laid down in us when we learn to read and pronounce each word aloud in syllables. We learned to read, but the habit remained. Some not only internally pronounce the text, but also move their lips. Naturally, fast reading is out of the question, because with all the desire a person is not able to say more than 500 words per minute. This means that he will read at the same speed. Those who master the methods of speed reading will be able to read up to 2 thousand words in the same time.

2. Regression reading

The main brake that hinders the speed of reading is the return movements of the eyes to the already read text. It seems to us that by rereading a phrase or paragraph, we delve deeper into its essence, but in reality this is not so. The logic of the text itself is violated, and we are forced to return to what we read again and again, which only aggravates the situation. Speed reading experts believe that, if necessary, it is better to return to some place after the entire text has been read.

By getting rid of the regressions that most people read with, you can increase your reading speed by 2-3 times.

3. Limited field of view

The field of view is the space of perception of the text. For people who read slowly (and most of them), it is 4-5 cm. They can be compared with peeping through a keyhole, who see only a small part of the picture. Experts say that it is impossible to expand the field of view with training. But with their help, you can learn to perceive information that is located in the area covered by peripheral vision. And as a result of training, it can be up to 10 cm.

Exercises for developing the skill of speed reading

Knowing the "enemy" of speed reading "in person", we can eliminate it. Do not expect immediate results and be disappointed if they are not there or they leave much to be desired. Developing any new skill takes some time. It's like in sports: high results are achieved only by hard training.

1. Reading with a pointer

To make our eyes slide forward smoothly, we read with a pointer (sushi stick), moving it a little faster than our understanding of the text. You can also do this with your finger, if that's more convenient.

This exercise is called the speed reading exercise. The gaze should only follow the lines along which the pointer moves, and in no case let it out of sight, returning to what has already been read.

After a while, we will get rid of the regressions and be able to read without a pointer.

2. Suppress articulation

Some experts consider subvocalization to be a natural process that helps reduce the burden of learning new material. However, it significantly slows down reading.

Suppressing articulation - the work of the speech organs (tongue, lips, larynx) while reading “to yourself”, and not aloud, can be done with the help of distraction. That is, in parallel with reading, we (or a partner studying with us) can tap some kind of rhythm on the table with a pencil. This will distract us from the mental pronunciation of the text.

In addition to tapping, you can use the countdown method: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, etc. We will keep track of the score so as not to stray, and we will not be able to pronounce the words. Instead of counting, you can hum some motive (out loud or “to yourself”), read tongue twisters or simple rhymes by heart.

3. Green dot method

This method allows you to learn to perceive information in the field of peripheral vision. In the center of the page with some text, draw a green dot and focus on it for 10 minutes. Mentally imagine a green dot in front of us and when we go to bed and close our eyes.

After practicing with concentration on the green dot for two weeks, we begin to consider the text located horizontally and vertically from it. We try to cover as many words as possible with our eyes - they do not need to be read, just seeing is enough.

The green dot exercise can be complemented by classes with Schulte tables, designed specifically to improve peripheral vision. The tables themselves and the methodology for studying them can be downloaded from one of the sites.

4. Practice gibberish

Training in the so-called gibberish reading, or reading from right to left, develops thinking, attention and the ability to concentrate.

To get started, you can practice reading from right to left using a palindrome (from the Greek. "back" and "running") - words or phrases that read the same way from left to right, which is vice versa. Examples of a palindrome: “A rose fell on Azor’s paw”, “Rome is dear to the city or Mirgorod is dear”, “The cat will soon be forty days old”, “The boar pressed the eggplant”, etc. And then you can start training on a regular text. On the Internet, you can find a site that offers right-to-left e-books and order them for free.

5. Reading upside down

Upside down reading exercises can increase your reading speed. First, we read a paragraph in an inverted book, then return it to its normal position and reread it. We will immediately feel how easy and fast we can do it!

6. The tick-tock method

While reading, we capture only the beginning and end of the line with our eyes, and not every word, as in normal reading. This will be enough to understand the meaning of what is read, while the speed of reading will increase significantly.

7. Reading diagonally

The gaze glides along the diagonal of the page. Eye movements to the left or right are not allowed, return to what has already been read is also not allowed. At first, the gaze will cover only a few words, but as you practice, the amount of perception will increase. The main thing in this method is to learn how to highlight key phrases and skip verbal garbage. You need to start reading from the top left corner of the page to the bottom right. People who have mastered this method need only take a look at the page to understand what is at stake.

Those who want to thoroughly master the methods of speed reading should find the right book. This may be "Learning to read quickly" by I. Golovleva. There are also a lot of training video courses on the Web, for example, "More than speed reading."

It is convenient and interesting to learn speed reading with the help of various applications. One of them is Spreader. The text is loaded into it, and the number of words and the speed of their appearance can be set independently.
