Nier automata is the main character. Nier: Automata - Crazy Fantasy

22.06.2022

In 2010 the company Square Enix together with Cavia and creator Drakengard Yoko Taro released a strange game called Nier. The atmospheric adventure in the post-apocalyptic world stood out for its unusual mechanics, which combined elements of action, RPG, platformer, Bullet Hell shooter, gardener simulator and even a text quest. The unique game had a divine soundtrack and a touching story with a lot of unexpected twists that unfolded with each new playthrough, offering new intros, hero memories and endings. Unfortunately, at that time all the attention of the Western press was focused on Final Fantasy XIII, and the Yoko Taro project received an unreasonably cold reception in many ways, but at the same time it was able to resonate in the hearts of ordinary users, becoming a cult in a short time. Fortunately, Square Enix has not forgotten about the series, as a result of which the new Tarot game was given the green light, and we received the long-awaited - this time from the masters of the Action genre - Platinum Games. The latter gathered a team of Tarot fans within themselves, so the development process went pretty smoothly.

According to the plot, in 5012, aliens from outer space attacked the Earth, who destroyed almost all of humanity with the help of an army of combat robots. Those who were lucky enough to survive fled to the moon and, after about 200 years, were able to strike back by sending their androids to the surface of the Earth. However, they failed to dislodge the enemy. The moment the start goes 11945 and the 14th Machine War. At the forefront - unit androids YorHa- the most modern warriors who fight for the glory of mankind. A fanatical organization is led by a commander White, which receives instructions from the human consul and, with the help of a dozen operators, directs YorHa units during the most dangerous tasks on the surface of the Earth and in the air.

The main characters of the story are two androids - a combat unit 2B and her partner - a hacker scout 9S. Together they will have to study the remains of ancient cities, learn about the plans of the enemy and lead humanity to victory. As events unfold, the story gets deeper and surprises with unexpected twists, turning a seemingly simple plot into an intricate and very complex drama. Where have the aliens gone? Why do soulless machines try to act like humans? The picture of the world is constantly expanding and supplemented with new details - be it files accidentally found on the server during a system hack, or another side quest.

The structure of the narrative is also unusual, although this technique is familiar to Tarot fans. The plot is divided into three components - each with its own ending. Only after going through all the branches can you get the most complete picture. To continue the game, you must load the final save, which is created after receiving the next ending. In each of the campaigns, you play as a different character. The first story is dedicated 2B. Second - 9S. This is a look at the same events, but from different angles. The characters in the story are separated in some places, which means not only new game sections, but also important screensavers. Both stories converge at one point, after which the sequel opens - the second half of the game. Here are the strongest turns and the opportunity to play for third character.

Previous projects tarot could be blamed for many things, but not for a bad plot. And this time he does not fail, revealing his story not just through the prism of unrestrained violence, but giving him nourishment from the rivers of various philosophical currents. What at first may not seem like a very appropriate reference to works and personalities Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, confucius or even biblical motives, takes on a completely different color when one of the above mentioned manifests itself in the motivation and behavior of the character, showing that even in the distant future, these topics disturb the minds thirsty for life and push them to the same mistakes as people thousands of years before them. But on their own, these topics may seem too abstract for some players, and Yoko Taro helps them to become flesh.

Brutal death scenes, shocking revelation of the backstory of the world, and connection to the first part Nier And Drakengard bring the intensity of passions to the maximum, forcing the characters to go crazy, and you to bite your nails nervously, worrying about your favorite characters and the ending of this story. To obtain true ending (E), you will have to make certain choices, but thanks to a convenient section replay system that opens at the right time, you don’t have to start the game from the very beginning or look for an old save - you just choose the right moment and try another option in the dialogue. The finale, like the whole story as a whole, will leave a strong aftertaste and a desire to figure everything out to the end, building certain theories with friends in the chat and discussing the game on the forum.

Rich history of the world and lore, the real goal of the project YorHa, the true nature of the enemy, the relationship of the characters and the connection with previous games in the series make the story one of the most interesting, complex and atmospheric in recent years.

In addition to their own history, new enemies and bosses, the campaigns of heroes also differ in mechanics. 2B prefers to combine sets of two types of weapons, creating deadly combinations of blows. Platinum Games created about 40 variations of edged weapons, which included standard and large swords, various spears and combat gloves. All of them differ in damage, attack speed and coverage area and can be upgraded from blacksmiths for a certain amount of materials and money.

Each item is set to its own button, and, accordingly, by pressing them in different sequences, you get combinations of attacks depending on the equipped weapon. So, starting the chain with a spear strike and continuing the combination with a huge sword, 2B will stick a spear into the ground and begin a combat rotation on the shaft, touching all enemies with a huge blade. A long press of the “triangle” allows you to perform an automatic combination in the style of “essence” from Ninja Gaiden. And after knocking the enemy to the floor, you can perform a stylish finishing move by pressing the “circle” button.

The dodge system works for all heroes and is very reminiscent of Bayonetta, where the timely pressed button guarantees a stylish escape from the attack. Only this time, the authors do not limit you in the number of consecutive uses and greatly expand the window for entering a command. If the attack button is pressed at the right time immediately after dodging, the characters will launch a powerful counterattack that can throw the enemy into the air.

All weapons are common to each hero, but 9S, being a scout, has little command of combat techniques. The hero can only send one weapon flying, using it as a kind of boomerang. main function 9S- hack the enemy, destroying him from the inside. To do this, you aim at the necessary enemy, hold down the triangle and wait for the special indicator to fill. This usually takes one to several seconds, depending on the type of target. After that, the hero's consciousness is transferred to the computer logic of the enemy - a small level of virtual reality, where you look like a cursor that moves around a limited area of a schematic world. The more difficult the enemy - the more and more difficult the level.

Normal enemies from the inside look like square rooms with a bare cannonball that takes one to three seconds to destroy, even though it tries to hit you with colored projectiles. Other opponents offer to go through small locations with dangerous orange walls and numerous ambushes. By deflecting the right analog to the side, you fire golden bullets that destroy barriers and defense systems on impact. The latter differ in appearance and functionality and try to shoot you by attacking in predetermined directions or using aiming. Orange and red projectiles can be easily knocked down, while black ones fly through your bullets - you can only dodge them.

From the access point "City Ruins: Near Factory" head upstairs to the entrance to the largest building. Being on the first floor, go straight until you see a long emergency exit staircase. You need to climb to the very top, where you can get to an open section of the roof, inaccessible before. Take the glasses left by Adam from the table.

LEARNING TO JUMP FAR

How and why to make long jumps? There are not many places in the game where you need to use this kind of jumping justifiably, but you can jump at your own pleasure, creating your own techniques or using others. We will analyze several such options from short to long distances.

First way: Standing on the edge, press jump + jump (), then +, this will allow the Pod to throw you forward a little; then hold to hover, and finally dash (). Pressing the combination and in the process will also allow you to make a parrying circular motion.

Second way: Hold (jump) before stepping off the platform, press to dash and (this will allow you to make a circle with the Pod). Next, release and simultaneously hold + to attack upwards, hold and again for another circular motion, then press + to make Pod throw you up.

HOW TO GET LEVEL 99

In NieR: Automata there is a very unusual and fast way to get level 99 faster than getting rich. To do this, you need to be approximately level 70, select the character 9S and go to the entrance to the Amusement Park (Amusement Park), at third playthrough games. There, on the pedestal, you will see a statue of a large golden rabbit, start continuously pounding and shooting at it until it comes to life! Rabbit will be level 80, hack it. You will get experience for the hacking process (!), as well as for killing him at the end! The total experience is huge: for one kill you will get about 4-5 levels (for the best result, equip a pretty chip Exp Gain Up +). One ... well, you already understood that you can do this endlessly. My XP gain was 19,140 EXP for hacking and 49,764 EXP for defeating a boss. In addition, for killing him, you will receive an incredible amount of Powerup Part L and Machine Core.

When you're done with one, go upstairs until the save option lights up immediately click Quick Save and boot! Run back from the access point.

Note: If you are not very high level, first destroy all the enemies around: the lower your level the longer it will take you to hack the killer rabbit. If you can't unlock it for a long time, put the upgraded Weapon Attack Up chip.

MEET AND DEFEAT THE SECRET BOSS

Well, we pumped up, and now let's go, fill up the secret boss? Actually it can be done at second playthrough, if you have already gained enough level during the game. Further text will be written with a focus on meeting with the boss in the second playthrough.

Recommended level 70+ (you can do less, but you will need to equip yourself very thoroughly, although at seventy the boss will give you heat). You can pump up during the second playthrough in the Copied City, at the site of the final battle, with endlessly respawning enemies, with the Exp Gain Up + chip equipped (with 60-90% chance).

But first, in order to get the key to the dwelling of our terrible and powerful boss, you need to complete the quest of an old friend Emil from the first NieR! The quest "Emil's Memories" serves as a very good reference to the original, allows you to get a little nostalgic for the old people, and to get into this character for newcomers. And, of course, it allows you to do a good deed - to help Emil remember his past. The quest can be completed during the first passage for 2B, after completing the Forest Kingdom. But in the future we need the character 9S.If you did not have time to complete the task in the first playthrough, do not worry, you can do it in the second, or whenever you want.

So, you need to meet Emil, who has (suddenly) become a traveling merchant. You can find it near the entrance to the desert, the access point "Desert: Camp". Since Emil is a wandering merchant, in the truest sense of the word, first you have to stop him: catch up and shoot, he will stop. After talking, head to the Commercial Facility of City Ruins, the nearest hotspot is "City Ruins: Near Tower". From the escalator, turn right, at the roots of the tree you will see a shining flower Lunar Tear, which is admired even by androids, not like children. The quest begins ... You need to collect four more flowers, the location of which will be indicated on the map.

Second flower look in the Forest Zone: from the entrance, go strictly south, nestling against the rocks that will be on the right side until you get into a small cave.

third flower look in the Amusement Park, in the lane with the merchant, near the stairs.

fourth flower look in the Flooded City: at the very end of the location, look under the ruined road.

fifth flower look in the Desert Zone, on its underground level. Go to the buildings in the center, where there is a large pipeline. Somewhere in the middle there will be a small rock in which you can see a hole leading underground. Run through the entire underground floor, after falling, keeping the course to the left, at the first turn down - the exit we need should be hook-shaped. Go straight to a dead end, then climb up the rocks and jump twice to the other side. Having looked out for a tree, jump down, the flower will be nearby.

After collecting all the lunar tears and getting the Elevator Key, return to the mall, in the center of which there is an elevator. You there - complete the quest.

Now you can open another Ruin City elevator. From the access point "City Ruins: Cave" get out into the light; then you will need to go around the area on the right side, so that you get somewhere one level higher. There will be a flat roof (where the Speed Star quest ends) and a large water pipe to the right. Jump into it and open the elevator door, which will take you to the very depths. Go straight, but keeping to the left, you should soon see another elevator that will take you straight to where you need to go. There, turn right, and through the enemies make your way forward. Go through all the doors and you will enter Emil's house. This time you need to steal from him, well, that smacks of trouble. Approach the stand of his masks and take one (Emil's Mask item received).

Return to the surface and look for a merchant who already knows about what happened and will also rush to complain to you about it.

Attention (!) Controlling the character 9 S, equip suitable chips - preferably large in strength (+6) and not taking up much space (see screenshot above), upgrade your favorite weapon, stock up on healing items (Medium Recovery / Large Recovery - 40+ pieces) and power-up items (Melee Attack Up (L), Melee Defense Up (L), Ranged Attack UP (L), Ranged Defense Up (L), etc.). Your level is 70+. Save the game.

If you are ready, return to Emil's house and break open the chest with Emil's Head that appeared there. Come out, the time of reckoning has come - Emil himself decided to deal with you!

Emil / Emil: 99 level. The boss is very strong and has a strong arsenal of attacks, one hit takes off about half of the character's lives (you can equip a chip that increases health, but a good one will take quite a lot of cells). Having caught the blow, do not wait and use the healer. Immediately apply all kinds of reinforcing items on yourself, as soon as their period of action ends, apply again. Actively use the Pod and his attacks for example, Wave (the strengthening item Ranged Attack UP will strengthen his attacks, which are very important to us) and dodges (!). If it's tight, use Popola's Booze item.

Do not relax until the bitter end after losing approximately 75% HP, he can unleash a deadly attack on you, creating a huge energy ball. Try not to please him.

If you managed to fight back, congratulations - you are invincible thieves!

SECRET TROPHY SHOP

After the third pass unlocks access to the secret trophy store. Go to the Resistance Camp and look for Strange Resistance Woman - a woman with a mask on her head, giving out hints to players. Talk to her - in response, she, as usual, will offer a list of topics, and the one we need will be called "Request unlocking you-know-what". After that, you will see a numbered list of trophies, without names and other things. To distinguish between them, you will have to check the descriptions attached to them. Also, only those achievements that you have not yet received will be displayed there, and the rest will be listed as purchased.

Trophy rates:

  • 50,000 G for Bronze;
  • 100,000 G for Silver;
  • 200,000 G for Gold.

MESSAGE FROM 2B

On the third pass games, teleport to Flooded City: Coast. Using character 9S, go forward along the ruined road. Soon it will be possible to turn from it to the right bank. You will see the downed flying unit 2B, in which she left a message for her partner.

SECRET BOSS FINAL ROUND

This time you have to fight the clones of Emil. For this you need complete third playthrough game and get access to the choice of chapters, upgrade all weapons to level 4, get level 99. The battle will be less severe, healing and strengthening items will not be needed very much.

Choose a chapter "07-01:ReportingtoPascal" and go to the shopping center of the City of Ruins, meet Emil there and take the quest "Emil's Determination". It will unfold in the desert: from the Desert: Center access point, run to the right until you see Emil's huge heads. As soon as you talk to the employer , a fight will follow.

Having removed all their HP, two scenarios will follow:

  1. Emil will start self-destruct and the timer along with it. Do nothing and then you will get one of the endings: "Ending Y". I advise you to perform this option first if you go to Platinum.
  2. Emil will start self-destruct and the timer along with it. Listen to Emil's chatter until there is an opportunity to destroy the Clones, and continuously follow them.

His story ends on this beautiful and sad note.

LOCATION OF ALL GOLD MACHINE

Meeting with these enemies will contribute to filling the informative base (Unit Date) by 100% and obtaining one item necessary for crafting. Well, new impressions of the player.

There will be three meetings with golden mechanical lifeforms in total, they are a kind of mini-quest in which you will have to kill your brother (Courageous Brother) first, then your sister (Hateful Sister) and, finally, the child (Vengeful Child). They belong to the class of special machines (Peculiar Machines). In the game, they will appear after the passage of the Forest Kingdom (Forest Kingdom) on first pass games.

They have an incredible health reserve of 1,000,000 (level 25) on the enemies accompanying the "family" and 1,000,000,000 HP (level 25) on its members. Hacking is the best way to fight them, but you can also attack them fully armed, although this will take much longer.

Where to find them:

CourageousBrother: The first fight will take place at the "City Ruins: Center", not far from this hotspot. The battle will be with two Gold Goliath Bipeds and one Courageous Brother. Eliminate enemies, killing them should drop an item Powerup Part S. Make sure this happens, otherwise reboot.

And now it's time for information about new characters. There are a lot of pictures and text under the cut.

Adam- a mysterious, extremely intelligent young man who wears glasses. He has a calm nature, but he is capable of being ruthless if that is required to achieve his goals.

Eve- Twin brother of Adam. He is quite unsophisticated, relative to his brother. He loves his brother very much.

Devola And Popola- obsolete androids that live in the Resistance Camp. They feel indebted to the machines of their generation, which have long been rampant in the world. They are unusual in the android community as they can drink alcohol. These are not the same characters that were in the original game. They just have the same model. Although they are aware of the events that took place in NieR and want to atone for the guilt of their “relatives”.

Good old Emil. Only he lost most of his memories, because he lives very, very long. His role in the game is unknown.

Operators 6O And 21O- telecom operators located in the Bunker. They are responsible for transmitting orders to units and analyzing information. Their characters are different. Operator 6O, who is assigned to 2B, has a cheerful character. And 21O, which is assigned to 9S, on the contrary, is quite calm and collected.

– despite being a machine life form, Pascal is a pacifist and hates wars. Tries to promote the path of peace among machines. He is an extremely intelligent machine who is interested in the history of mankind and machines.

- the head of the Bunker - the base that is in orbit, and the commander of all YoRHa units. She appears arrogant and calm, although she is actually worried about 9S and 2B. Apparently, it has something to do with the A2 prototype.

Under 052 And Under 153 - standard YoRHa squad support units. Equipped with various weapons, mostly long-range ones. They also provide mobility support. They are used to receive information from the base, as well as to transfer strategic information to other machines. Sub 042 uses 2B and Sub 153 uses 9S.

Unknown character. It is only known that voices his Nakata Joji and what his Soul Signed as "Excellence".

A couple of my theories are that Adam and Eve are sort of incarnations of Brother and Sister One. They have extremely similar personalities, plus, there is the symbolism of the Cult. I also suspect that??? will be a character from the manga Thou Shalt Not Die.

Now a little about locations.

Bunker

The bunker is the headquarters of YoRHa. Located in Earth's orbit. From here, the Commander issues orders, as well as sends support to the units.

Resistance Camp

Life in orbit is monotonous, although androids develop not only with the help of modern technology, but also by reading books from a long forgotten past. But their main goal is war.

Square Enix pleasantly surprised all fans of Yoko Taro's work and gave him a second chance, pulling a title and a decent budget out of their big bag of great games of yesteryear. Yoko himself was reluctant to talk about it, and according to him, the Square Enix bosses were impressed by the fanatical followers of the first part, as well as the concept of a new game that he put on their table.

The production threatened to remain on paper, and Taro himself was preparing to leave, but the management of the Japanese company made the final decision to approve the continuation of one of the most controversial games in the same Square Enix “bag of masterpieces”, which was facilitated by the good financial situation in the company. Whether Taro was rehabilitated for past failures or not, I will try to talk about this further.

Nier Automata is already out on PS4 and PC, and although our review was a little delayed, we have prepared a really voluminous material for you without extremes and bows to fan service. For the first time, we decided to go beyond the format of previous reviews and this time we will even tell the story of this mysterious and strange universe, because many of our subscribers who had not previously encountered this series, when passing Automata, could not know why it all happened and how I ended up here .

STORY

So, you will be surprised, but the beginning of the history of the Nier universe lies in the fifth ending of the game Drakengard, which was released on PS2 under the direction of the same Yoko Taro. According to the plot of Drakengard, in modern Japan in 2003 at the time of the release of the game, or rather in Tokyo, the giant Queen Beast moved and the heroine of the game dealt with her.

However, everything did not end there, and after the death of the monster, a monstrous epidemic befell the city, killing all life and turning people into shadow berserkers. The disease was called "White Chlorination Syndrome" and spread very quickly throughout the city. Most of the infected turned into shadows, becoming uncontrollable and crazy creatures. They were called the Legion, with which uninfected people had to fight.

The infection swept the whole country, and scientists could not find a cure for the disease, so it was decided to develop a Gestalt plan, the purpose of which was to clone people, and put the souls of the infected into the clones. To do this, they created androids, who were supposed to control the cloning process.

The events in Tokyo that unfolded in 2003 gave rise to Nier's lore.

The Genshalt Initiative was successful, and at one point, the clones (or "replicants") gained the ability to feel, unfortunately for ordinary people. From that moment on, humanity was doomed to a slow extinction, and after thousands of years it finally ceased to exist.

The world was in the grip of clone replicants, and in 3361, even before the extinction of people, the events of the first Nier game actually take place, where, like in Drakengard, there are several endings, and one of them is a continuation of Automata.

The protagonist Nir unknowingly gets in the way of the Gestalt.

Like Drakengard, the game had four endings, and Automata is a continuation of the fourth of them (ending D). The protagonist of the game Nier begins to obstruct the Gestalt project and dooms people to extinction, although replicants continue to exist in different parts of the planet. Then the threat of alien machines approached the Earth, and for several thousand years people still gave in and fled to the moon.

From there, they send out android combat teams to stop the machine invasion.

This is how the Earth looks like in the 12th millennium in Tarot fantasy, tormented by endless wars.

So, in 11941 AD (and this, for you to understand, almost 8 thousand years after the events of the first game), and another team of androids called YoRHa is sent to Earth. Among its members are two protagonists: 2B and 9S.

The goal is the destruction of machines and the return of humanity to its native cradle, which has become completely alien to the human race, since the planet of the millennium is dominated by mechanical puppet invaders who are building their own independent life here from the owners who have gone into oblivion, about which you will learn more in the game .

Following the instructions of the YorHa headquarters, which is located on the orbital station, the two protagonists will have to face the "robo-society", which only at first glance seems cold and metallic, but over the millennia of wars, even alien machines can get tired of battles, and their artificial intelligence can evolve by system failure .

But the key task will remain unchanged - to return humanity and to know absolutely the whole truth, and for this you will need to go through the game several times. Two androids land on Earth and, helping the local android resistance forces, begin their routine work. But everything changes when 2B and 9S learn more about the puppeteers, who have suffered the same fate as the android creators. What, you ask - to solve this riddle you will have to go through the game more than once, because if you want to know the whole truth, get ready for a very long journey and trials. And those people who still find themselves dissatisfied should immediately run and look for Gestalt or Replicant, so carefully translated by fans on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Without the protocols of the masters, artificial intelligence began to develop itself along the spiral of human history.

To avoid spoilers entirely, the first playthrough is just a small part of the game that will puzzle you even more than you find the answers. The story will continue as soon as you start the second playthrough, but for a different android. It is there that the developers, at least more clearly, will answer you the main plot questions, including the backstory, and once again, but with a different approach, they will indirectly retell the ending of Gestalt.

Many well-known game journalists and reviewers are cunning when they tell you that after the first playthrough you will feel some kind of understatement and dissatisfaction. Nothing like this. In fact, the path to unraveling is just beginning. You have to get answers to all significant events not only covered by the Automata period, but also earlier taking place in the universe of the series.

What happened to people? What is the purpose of androids? What drives alien machines and who created them? What are these creatures and why is the war going on for millennia? Do androids have dreams?

In general, the plot is simple and strongly influenced by the West, unlike its predecessor, however, individual plot elements deserve admiration. There will be no plot pirouettes here, as in the first part, but the developers, as I believe, deliberately went down this path, borrowing the narrative system from Western science fiction games, and Yoko Taro himself, perhaps, is well-read and simply adores cyberpunk writers, handwriting which slips as the Automata passes.

GAME WORLD

Many players who went through the demo and did not play the first Nier may mistakenly think that the game is linear and completely corridor, but this is far from the case.

The prologue was really like that, but everything changes as soon as you land on an open location, where you will immediately be hinted that this is primarily an open world RPG with a leisurely study of locations, and not a high-speed slasher like Ninja Gaiden. And besides, it is seasoned with several genres at once - shoot em up with bullet hell and platformer, although, basically, you will find a race with a third-person view.

The game world of Automta is both a plus and a minus of the game. The advantage lies in the striking beauty, effectively replacing each other locations throughout the passage, and the minus is the emptiness of objects in these locations.

Let's say there are a lot of buildings, floors, broken stairs and mountains of garbage in the game, where there is emptiness, and this is very striking, even when you are engaged, for example, in the same grind, which is necessary, since in many empty rooms there is a valuable loot.

Of course, here the graphical problems also stretch in a chain, along with textures that are terrible for 2017, which simply cannot be ignored, as well as ignoring this flaw when making the final assessment. But the empty world is somewhat smoothed out by the great soundtrack, which I will write about later, as well as the amazing inhabitants that inhabit it, created by the unbridled imagination of the head of development, Yoko Taro.

A striking example of this is the Amusement Park, where war-torn robots in beautiful outfits perform carnival dances, fireworks and maintain a semblance of a past human life, despite the fact that everything comes to ruin. And already in the next location, you will explore Pascal's settlement from a side view, as in a platformer, along the way, marveling at the new visual techniques that Platinum Games so carefully throws at us.

Stunning views in Nier: Automata are few and far between, but will leave you with a blast.

Of course, the Automata game world has not done without self-copying, but in the modern gaming industry, this does not seem to be something indecent, if, of course, it is appropriate and suitable for certain events. So, devoted fans of Tarot creativity in the first hours will see painfully familiar locations from NieR: Gestalt or Replicant (depending on who played which version). And although these landscapes have been modernized and brought to a new world, the quality of the game does not suffer from this in any way and definitely evokes nostalgic feelings among veterans, and even makes someone dust off a forgotten disk of the first part.

GAME MECHANICS

Your android 2B, like other protagonists, has a so-called "system board", on which you can place the chips (plugins) necessary for strengthening and skills.

These are elements that will simplify your passage and are divided into several categories:

  • System (HUD). They will allow you to display the level of enemies on the screen, text with the current target, automatically hide the HUD element in certain situations, display an icon that will tell you that manual save from the menu is possible in this area, display EXP and more.
  • Attackers. They increase the chance of critical damage, add a shock wave to the weapon, allow you to calculate movement in order to deal maximum oncoming damage, increase the power of charges, the power of ranged and melee attacks, and under certain conditions, if, say, your health drops below 25%
  • Protective. Everything is clear here too. You need to pick up and tweak the chips to reduce the damage you missed from the enemy and down to restoring/improving your own HP.
  • Support. Auto-attack, which can only be used on the easiest difficulty level, and also increases the experience gained, movement speed, dodge distance, item drops, recharge your POD and more
  • Breaking into. The most sophisticated chips in my opinion. They allow you to incapacitate the enemy from a distance by hacking his processor, such as stun, fire, explosion and remote control.

The game will please in the first passage with a good slasher, but don't flatter yourself - in the new passage they will surprise action RPG with tactical decisions.

It is worth noting that your system board, on which the above goodness is installed, is not infinite and you will have to unlock a new place for the currency on it. This is necessary to install chips that take up more space depending on the efficiency. In the same way, you will have to buy the chips themselves for money if you do not want to knock them out in battle.

In addition to chips that improve your attack, you will also be offered to improve your weapons, increasing their level and damage multiplier. To do this, you will need to look for the necessary items to upgrade, but you can also test other weapons that are sold by merchants in allied bases or located in secluded places in the game locations. In the game, you can make beautiful and powerful combos from a set of two types of weapons that you have installed in the menu. You can and should switch between them, the effect of this will exceed all your expectations.

Do not stop at one set, buy other weapons, experiment and you will get your perfect combo, which will become a weighty argument in an exciting fight with the next boss.

Slasher elements are not always present, the second protagonist will not have effective strikes - you will engage in tactical actions at a distance, allowing your partner 2B to be almost the only strike force, and at this time you will penetrate the enemy’s processor, taking control of its main functions , which I will talk about later.

Get ready, now it's going to shoot em up in a crazy rhythm, seasoned with bullet hell.

When traveling with an android partner, your personal POD will always be nearby - this is such a small flying robot that supports you both in battles and in exploring different parts of the world.

This robot is very useful in combat, it has all firearm skills, both weak and powerful - requiring reloading. Powerful skills can be both offensive (a laser shot that deals high damage to one or a group of opponents) and defensive (shields and security systems with damage that revolve around your android).

Programs for powerful attacks can be bought from androids at the bases, which also provides a lot of variability in fights. PODs are divided into several types: with basic weapons that cannot be replaced, but at the start you will only have access to a Gatling POD, and with laser weapons that cause more damage to certain types of vehicles.

When traveling with an android partner, your personal POD will always be nearby - this is such a small flying robot that supports you both in battles and in exploring different parts of the world.

The game has three protagonists, as well as three full-fledged story-related passages, and many events overlap with each other. In Nier Automata, along with the change of character, the game mechanics also change, which is hard to get used to. If 2B prefers close contact combat and slashers, then 9S likes to keep the enemy at a distance and uses much more tactics than his "girlfriend". The guy can successfully connect to the enemy robot and after winning the mini-game for a while, which is called hacking, blow up the enemy in the midst of his partners, causing area damage, or take control of the robot and use all its combat capabilities (the player completely takes control of the robot ), and believe me, there are a lot of them, or just make them fight side by side.

Along with the new protagonist, the interaction in the surrounding world also changes - now you can hack and open password-protected boxes with valuable loot, doors behind which you can find rare weapons and opponents with chips. In other words, playing as 9S will give you a million new experiences, including the main genre variety of slasher and action rpg, despite the fact that it actually repeats the story of the previous protagonist in terms of the same quests.

All of your experience, items, and more will carry over to the new game with 9S after the first playthrough, so you can always go back to those quests that terrified you on your first playthrough.

In the sea, with the help of POD, you can catch both fish, which are valued well by merchants, as well as someone else's POD with a laser.

The game makes great use of other genres, especially shoot em up, seasoned with a driving bullet hell - in the first playthrough, the developers try to keep a balance, but already for the second protagonist they will be able to get enough of such battles stylized as classics.

You will also encounter side view missions, but the platforming in the game is much weaker than other classic mechanics brought in. Perhaps its main drawback lies in the game engine, and in "platformer" fights, you can easily lose your character in the thick of the battle on a limited location square and miss an enemy attack, which will become deadly. And if bullet hell is not enough for you in the first playthrough, then starting the game with 9S will more than compensate for the lack of it.

There are defeated android players in the game, they can be repaired and they will fight with you, or extract useful loot and money. The second option is much better

MUSIC

The game features an amazing soundtrack composed by the brilliant Keii Okabe and Studio Monaka. It can be said with firm certainty that it is the music that is the strongest side of the game and almost always smooths out the abundant graphical flaws that do not allow you to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the distant future.

In each location, the melodies change: in the post-apocalyptic city there are calm and almost pacifying melodies, which symbolize the serenity of what is happening on the screen and the remnants of the once powerful human civilization with all the sounds and the surrounding picture.

In the Amusement Park, the melody changes to a solemn one, as if you are really present at the center of a big holiday, only instead of human voices and happy smiles you see silent smart robots throwing confetti and dancing their strange dance. The same applies to other locations - the composer sensually selected the necessary sound for each of them.

I note that many may not like this presentation, but the developers are doing their best to maintain interest, also adding gameplay elements and new features that were previously not available in the previous passage.

You can recommend Yoko Taro's new project to both fans of his work and other players who are not afraid of experiments and new ideas in games where you need to not only read between the lines, but also partially think out yourself, spinning your imagination.

The review is based on a digital copy provided by the Buka distributor.

If you think 2B is a stereotypical serious bitch, then you are wrong, since Yoko Taro never makes such characters protagonists. Things aren't as simple as they seem, and her relationship with her partner isn't as obvious.

Yes, I believe that the relationship between 2B and 9S is much more than friendly, and there are many simple things about it. For example, in the prologue and the beginning of the game, she constantly asks to stop calling her ma'am and says that there is no need to be so formal. This speaks to her desire to remember any little things that reunited them in the past, before she had to kill 9S.
At the amusement park location, 9S reveals that many in Yorha call him Nines because someone gave him that name a long time ago, but 2B refuses to call him Nines because he doesn't want to reveal his true feelings to him.
In the location of the forest kingdom, she accidentally makes a reservation and calls him Nines, but tries to avoid the conversation. This simple disclaimer makes it clear that it was 2B who gave 9S that nickname.

In the A and B ending, 2B says that he will lose 9S as he currently exists, and in C and D, we learn that 2B is actually a 2E unit created to eliminate the Yorha androids. In the prologue, 2B kills 9S by connecting their black box. In the third playthrough of the game, 9S will try to kill 2B and her operator 21O.

All these facts make us understand that 2B is ordered to kill 9S again and again and the reason for this is 9S's curiosity and excellence as a scanner module, as he is the one who is destined to find out the truth about the Yorha project. Because of this, 2B is forced to kill him every time he learns secret information, crying and relocating the pain of having to kill the one she loves again.

9S's feelings towards 2B are revealed mostly through his emotions, but he has a more open personality as a character. It is worth noting the following phrase, the question that Adam asks him:

The "censored" word can be interpreted very differently. Love, Hate, Kill, ... It's just as hard to understand from the context. what was meant. This is done not only so that the reader can think it out for himself, but also to show the ambiguity and versatility of human feelings: where there is love, there is hatred, and intimate relationships, and sometimes even murder.
A lot of facts refer to this diversity: for example, how 9S killed 2B with fury in the third playthrough. In endings A and B, 2B gently caresses 9S's face before strangling him, and the position in which she strangles him is somewhat reminiscent of a bed scene. So the method of murder: strangulation, can be considered with a somewhat erotic touch.

In this snippet, we can see that the 9S has a dedicated memory wipe program. He also says a phrase that he does not finish:
"What if I forget everything? My memories? Myself? Mine/Mine/Mine..."
Again, the player has to figure out what he was trying to say, but I think that maybe it's about his feelings for 2B.

His subsequent monologue only reinforces the theme of the importance of memories. Indeed, in real life, memories make us who we are. I return to the beginning of the text and remind 2B of the phrase that she will lose 9S as it is at the moment. Now it's clear what she meant.

Androids and Yorha

First of all, the design of androids causes a lot of controversy. All combat units wear blindfolds, which apparently symbolize blindness and bondage. Blindness is not physical, but the inability to see the truth. These bandages fall off not only in moments of epiphany or release from the Yorha project, but also in moments when 2B and 9S give vent to their feelings and open themselves. After all, they are forbidden to feel. A2 does not wear a headband, as she has long been following her own path, she is free from the shackles of Yorha and has become an outcast even before the events of the game. The androids who are ordered to eliminate 2B and 9S during the second passage are not wearing armbands. In addition, the mission is a hint that 2B has a slightly different program than the usual combat android, but specialized in eliminating their own kind.

Few, however, attach importance to the covered mouth of each of the Yorha operators. This obviously refers to their inability to tell the truth, as they are the instrument for issuing false orders. These handkerchiefs are not removed during the entire game.

We need to start talking about Yorha with the topic of cyclicity in NieR: Automata. It permeates the project entirely, from the shape of the Bunker location to the commander himself.

Androids remove or tear their blindfolds when their cycle is interrupted. A2, the prototype for improving the rest of the units, broke the cycle of endless experiments on her and became an outcast even before the events of the game.
2B cut her bandage when she decided to die and break 9S' cycle of forced endless killings.
9S removes the blindfold as he lets his feelings out and lashes out at the copy of 2B in the tower.

Interestingly, from one point of view, 2B was still unable to break the cycle of endless killings of 9S even after physical death, because in the D ending he is stabbed with her katana. She gave this weapon to A2 with the words that all her memories are contained in it. And our memories are ourselves.

The episode where A2 cuts off his hair is important, because he and 2B have the same faces. So for the rest of the game, A2 looked like 2B would have looked without his blindfold.
If you went through the side quest "Amnesia", which tells about the android who killed her friend, remember that she said that she had already seen 2B somewhere. This may also be a reference to her recognizing 2E as a similar model to herself, created to eliminate Yorha units, as well as her having already met A2 and confused them due to similarities. In addition, Anemone in the resistance camp at the first encounter 2B confuses her with "Yorha unit number 2" (A2).

The important thing is the names of the androids, or rather their absence. There are none, only model numbers. This is the only thing that reminds us that the game is not about people, but about machines. This is most likely why 2B gave 9S a similar name - Nines, and so stubbornly refused to call him that again.

Resistance

A little about resistance. Their settlement is the most reminiscent of a human settlement in the game, and to be honest, on the first playthrough, I confused them with people. Indeed, the design of these androids, life, clothes, old-fashioned weapons, deceive the player, making him believe that we are people. However, it is not. This is primarily said by one of the sellers, as he repairs himself by replacing parts of his own body, and later, of course, the information that people no longer exist.

How are they different from Yorha? First, on the third playthrough, we learn that the core of Yorha androids is similar to that of machines. Which is not true for resistance androids. Secondly, their leader, Anemone, has already met players in previous games in the series, long before the events of Automata. This means that the resistance soldiers have been around for over two hundred years. Among other things, many resistance androids have names. Jackass, Anemone, and the names, as mentioned above, are the privilege of people, not androids that have only a model number.
I want to note the meaning of the names Jackass and Anemone.
Jackass is a slang word for a stubborn, reckless, or idiotic person.
Anemone has several meanings. This is both a flower and a sea anemone, living all its life in one place. In Greek, this name means "daughter of the winds."

It is also interesting that Anemone says that her soldiers are fighting "for humanity". This word in English has two meanings. The first is humanity itself, and the second is humanity, humanism. What is their true goal - you have to figure out for yourself player.

The twins Devola and Popola raise many questions.

These androids are characters from one of the previous parts of the game and, apparently, they are over a thousand years old. They lived in the library and one of their main goals was to protect the Gestalt project. Unfortunately, they did not succeed in this, after which they faced persecution, hatred and discrimination. According to their dialogue in the third passage, it can be assumed that they wandered for a long time and blamed themselves, after which they settled in a resistance camp.

Their eagerness to help 9S is rather suspicious. They are trying at all costs to push him into the tower, as if they already know what is inside. Indeed, the library in the tower is a copy of the one in which Devola and Popola lived earlier. But this selflessness can be explained in a simpler way. The desire of the twins to correct past mistakes, atone for guilt and fulfill their duty at least in this way. This can be argued based on their dialogue with A2, after the battle and the death of one of the sisters. Popola asks A2 if they were helpful. A2 agrees.

Throughout the game, and especially the second playthrough and side quests, it becomes apparent that the machines are trying to copy human behavior in all its manifestations, trying again and again. However, they fail to become human, but their behavior in battle shows the full ability to adapt to new conditions.

This can be explained in different ways. For example, that this is the vision of Yoko Taro of humanity, because over time our humanity has not changed much, but every year more and more new types of weapons are invented and we successfully learn to destroy.

However, machines also unite under various pretexts, such as the peaceful machines of Pascal's village, which refuse to fight (although all machine communities are eventually destroyed). For what?
The game does not give a logical answer to this question, as well as to many other questions related to "why" and "why", but perhaps the answer is contained in the words of the director of the game himself, when he himself was bombarded with "why":

“Even if every time you fail and you repeat yourself again ... I don’t think that everything we do needs some kind of explanation.
Let me give you an example: someone is trying to climb a mountain, they are not succeeding. But while they were climbing, they still got experience and I think there is a certain significance in this experience. In the end, everyone decides for himself and understands what matters to him and what does not.
Video games can be considered pretty goofy, right? You won't get money while playing, because it's not a job. And since it is natural for a person to die, even his life can be considered stupid. I believe that how you prioritize determines what is important to you. For example, I always wanted to be successful with women, and I never managed to achieve this in my youth (laughs). And since that didn't happen, now I make games (and they are my priority). In general ... everyone finds for himself what matters, even if it is not there for others. If you understand me."

In addition, it is worth noting that in the topic of cars there is a line of importance of memories. In the third playthrough after the episode at the factory, you can choose whether to remove Pascal's memories or kill him. In both cases, Pascal dies in the form in which he exists familiar to us. If you do not kill him, then he will return to the village and begin to take apart his former brothers in parts, calling them "garbage" and "a pile of metal." They simply ceased to have any value to him.

Androids and machines: the meaning of the confrontation?

The Yorha androids were programmed to protect humanity, which is now extinct. But the android production loop is still going on and the commander is lying to his soldiers to give them a reason to exist. Despite the fact that she herself knows the bitter truth, she continues to carry out the program, even knowing that the creators no longer exist and there is essentially nothing to protect (although this can be argued). The Commander tells 9S on the second playthrough that no one fights for no reason and they need a god to die for. That is why everyone lies.

The aliens trying to take over the earth with the help of machines are also dead. However, unlike the androids, the machines know about the death of the patrons, at least it can be assumed because of the scene with the twins in red dresses. The previous purpose of their existence (land grab) is essentially fulfilled, and their masters no longer exist. The network of machines (twins in red) come to the conclusion that in order to further adapt and develop, they need a goal, and they find this goal in an endless conflict with androids, in which neither side can win. Ultimately, after the collapse of Yorha, the network begins to conflict with itself (remember the love of machines for conflicts).

Keeping the machines fighting gives Yorha the ability to keep lying, and above all gives Yoko Taro the ability to lie to the player, constantly creating the feeling that something big is about to happen.

In the second playthrough, there is an unregistered side quest in which 9S is asked to hack several cars located at high points on the map. Once in their memory, you can hear their "thoughts" and reasoning about the meaning of life. After hacking the latter, they say that they did not find any reason to exist further and are thrown down.

Thanks to this information, it becomes obvious that the themes of such a philosophical doctrine as existentialism are carried through the whole game. This is the doctrine that life itself has no meaning and significance for the universe as a whole, and everyone must decide for himself what the meaning of his life is for him.

The game has many references to existentialist philosophers, the very first of which we meet in the village of friendly cars. Of course, this is primarily their leader Pascal. The character is named after Blaise Pascal, who is considered one of the progenitors of existentialism.
In the third passage, Pascal asks A2 to bring him a book, and then reads it and mentions the author - Nietzsche (a very famous representative of this teaching). Pascal read this book to children, and then, after their suicide in the factory (again, they decided that there was no point in living in fear), he said that he himself was to blame for teaching them these theories.
The second character - Jean-Paul, who gives a side quest and talks about existential theories that everyone around calls nonsense, is named after the existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.

In addition, there are many cars in the game that have chosen a variety of meanings and values for themselves: cars in the forest, seeing the whole meaning of life in the king (having a medieval way of life), cars in an amusement park, seeing the meaning of happiness and fun, cars in the desert , who consider the appearance of a child to be the most significant (having a tribal system and being a reference to the previous part of the game), religious machines that value God and Pascal's machines, for which a peaceful life is above all.

In addition, the names of many bosses: Marx, Engels, Hegel are the names of famous philosophers (Marx, Engels, Hegel), whose theories in one way or another contributed to the development of existentialism.

The final bosses Yo-Shi and Ko-Shi are also named for a reason. Ko-Shi is a reference to the Eastern philosopher Confucius, Yo-Shi (in Japanese pronunciation) is a reference to Mao Zedong.

There are other references to various philosophical concepts in the game, but analyzing them we will go into the deep jungle of hypotheses and theories of philosophy.

Why is E the happy ending?

Endings D and C, in my opinion, are extremely important for the plot. Namely - a tower in which there is a rocket aimed at destroying servers that store information about humanity on the moon. Despite the fact that the people themselves are no more, thanks to this data, it is alive as a memory and information on the server. This server is either destroyed or saved. Depending on which ending you got.
Thanks to this, you can bet that the androids have nothing to fight for. Yes, there is no need to protect people, but there is information and even a fragment of human DNA on the server (God) on the Moon, for which the commander continued to fight. After all, knowing the truth, she could just curtail the project, right?

Ending E, which is also called the real one, is often considered not good enough, too blurry, and they just like to criticize it. However, this is a true happy ending, and I will explain why.

We see the PODs flying towards the disabled 2B, 9S and A2, in their hands are details that are their memories. You can understand a lot from the POD dialogue if you read my guide carefully.

First, the androids will get their memories back. This means that they will become what they were supposed to be, and since Yorha no longer exists, 2B simply does not need to endlessly kill 9S again, and 9S no longer needs to erase his memory. The cycle will break, freedom will come and the opportunity not to hide emotions and feelings.
Secondly, the machines are defeated, which means that there is no need to continue the endless senseless battle. Another endless loop breaks.
This freedom enables androids to build a new future where they can become themselves and choose a new meaning of life. Perhaps 2B and 9S will find it in each other after they've been through so much together? We will have to figure this out for ourselves.

P.S

So what is NieR: Automata about? This is a game about humanity, man and people, about our life, actions, feelings, it is a reflection of how, why and why we do many things, what is the soul, personality, ourselves, what makes us ourselves and what we mean to others and the world around us.

A computer game is a rather controversial principle for presenting a plot, since any passage is unique for each player. We ourselves dictate to the characters what to do, and it is up to us to decide how to perceive the information and interpret it, what to attach importance to, what not, what to pay special attention to, and what can simply be skipped and discarded. Only the player can feel what our Avatar feels in the game. Only the player decides in which picture to put the pieces of events, information and their own impressions. All this interactivity allows us to delve into history, to feel and understand it as we ourselves want. As well as any work of art, which has its own meaning for everyone.

Authors of works on the philosophy of existentialism: Friedrich Nietzsche, Soren Kierkegaard. Brief basic information on the doctrine can be found in Wikipedia.
