Registration in a baguette and passe-partout. How to choose a baguette for a picture

10.07.2019

In houses, apartments and offices, paintings, collages, embroideries, photos are wonderful wall decorations. All these works deserve a decent frame that can emphasize the beauty of the image, simplify the process of placement, transportation. Our Framing Workshop offers you an excellent opportunity to provide a finished, attractive look to your favorite paintings and photographs.

Modern design of paintings is made from various materials. When choosing them, the stylistic direction of the image is taken into account so that the canvas and the frame become one whole, do not compete with each other. There are several secrets in this craft, the traditional canons of baguette forms. Profiles are used in the design of paintings:

  • classical,
  • back,
  • composite,
  • flat,
  • armchair.

In a classic baguette, the thickness gradually increases towards the outer edges. This profile gives the image an internal volume, provides the effect of a window into which the viewer is looking. This frame is great for traditional painting styles, realistic images.

The thickness of the reverse baguette is maximum at the inner edges. The frame seems to push the picture, providing the effect of increasing the external volume. This type of framing is commonly used for contemporary paintings.

Composite picture frames have a large width. They combine elements of classic and reverse profiles. These baguettes can be used for various types of paintings. Small images look especially impressive in wide frames.

flat picture frames belong to the simplest type of baguettes. On such products there is no relief, a small difference in height can be created. These baguettes perfectly complement the images made in modern technology.

The cabinet frames combine flat elements located on the inner parts and embossed decorative frames along the edge of the baguette. These products fit perfectly into strict classical interiors, provide convenient, safe transportation of paintings.

It is important to choose the right baguette for the canvas, not only the type of baguette, but also the material from which it is made. If you want to create a decent, durable frame for an expensive picture, preference should be given to hardwood:

In terms of aesthetic indicators, cheap, lightweight plastic frames may not be inferior to wooden counterparts. Plastic is perfectly painted, molded, which allows you to imitate any natural materials. The only downside is that these picture frames are brittle and can break if accidentally dropped.

In the design of graphics, illustrations, photos can be used aluminum picture frames with glass. The material is perfectly processed, allowing you to create various options for baguettes.

Making a photo in a frame

Framing icons requires a competent approach, as there are certain rules for making frames for these important items. Experienced specialists of our workshop will create a beautiful, reliable design for the icon, which for many years will be a worthy frame for the holy face, high-quality protection.

Framed papyrus

Recently, images on papyrus have become one of the most fashionable elements of the interior. These paintings can be seen in homes, hotels, travel companies. In our workshop you can place an order for the production of a spectacular, reliable frame for this jewelry. We will select material for the baguette that will successfully complement the papyrus sheet. The frame can imitate reed, bamboo, woody stem or bark. Such a frame will successfully emphasize the character of the decoration. In the creation of frames, velvet mats, double glasses, etc. can be used.

Let's talk about the types of materials used, various assembly techniques, as well as their pros and cons that can affect the quality and appearance of the work. The knowledge gained will help to avoid mistakes and avoid disappointment from embroidery, designed in a baguette workshop.

Materials used in the design

Glass, passe-partout, cardboard and baguette are the main materials used in baguette workshops for product design. Let's look at the features and types of these materials.

Baguette

From French, this word is translated as “stick”, therefore any “stick” specially prepared for the design of works and the manufacture of frames is called a baguette. There are three types: aluminum, plastic and wood.

Practically does not differ from wood in appearance. The advantages of its use are some cheapness compared to the wooden version, a fairly rich variety of species and lightness. The disadvantages include the fact that the material is fragile and rather soft, unsuitable for decorating large-sized works (otherwise you will have to take a wide one, which will not be appropriate everywhere), in addition, sometimes the decorative coating on such baguettes is not too strong.

A baguette of such a plan is preferably used for medium and small format works or, if necessary, a cheaper design.

Ask the receiver for advice on whether it makes sense in a particular situation to use plastic as a baguette.

Most often, balsa and pine are used for a wooden baguette, but there are options from other types of wood.

Baguettes made in Spain, Russia, Italy and the Czech Republic are most often found on Russian markets. Czech and Russian wooden baguettes are usually made from pine, while Spanish and Italian ones are more often made from balsa. Balsa is a lighter, higher quality (without geometric distortions and knots) and durable material than pine. However, it is more expensive, so a balsa baguette will be more expensive than a similar pine option. When choosing a suitable baguette, it all depends on your planned budget and what quality will suit you.

This option is suitable for posters, posters and photographs, but not for embroidery design.

Passepartout is a cardboard frame around the work to be made. Thick cardboard is used for the passe-partout, and the “window” must be cut at an angle so that the cut of the cardboard is visible by about 1.5 mm. The quality of branded passe-partout is standard and does not affect the look of the already designed work.

Passepartout differs in texture and color. The cut can also be in different colors: black, cream, striped (alternating black or white stripes with colored ones) and white. In addition, there are special museum collections where the cardboard is processed and protected from all kinds of environmental influences that can cause damage: dust, acid, moisture and light. Far from all workshops you can find such a passe-partout, since it will cost very much, because this option is not suitable for a wide range of consumers. When choosing a passe-partout, it is better to be guided primarily by aesthetic considerations, because the design of embroidery is also a way of self-expression.

Glass

Glass is of two types - anti-reflective and plain. The first has a high cost, but the light practically does not reflect.

Made with anti-reflective glass

If the choice fell on standard glass, then thin (1.5-2 mm) polished glass is suitable for decorating the work, which makes it possible not to make the product too heavy, although it is quite fragile.

Used in the design of ordinary glass

Left - anti-reflective glass, right - plain

Large work under glass should only be transported on edge, not flat, otherwise the glass may crack.

In most cases, the work is framed under glass, but for some products this is not required. In this situation, the passe-partout will have to be abandoned, because without glass the cardboard will get dirty pretty quickly.

If you want to decorate a picture embroidered with beads or three-dimensional embroidery under glass, then you need to choose a deep baguette and ask for embroidery design with a gap between the glass and the product.

This can also be achieved by using a double passe-partout.

Cardboard

This material is used to close the product from the back and to stretch the embroidery. Corrugated cardboard or gray thick cardboard (about 2 mm) is suitable for use. Corrugated cardboard is more economical in price, but less aesthetic and durable. If you can choose, it is better to purchase thick cardboard for decoration.

If your embroidery was done on a black canvas with incomplete filling, then in order for the holes in the canvas not to “shine”, it is better to put black fabric or paper under the canvas, and then stretch the embroidery onto cardboard.

In the workshops, you can also be offered various “gadgets”: slips and stickers to decorate the finished product, but these design decisions do not affect the quality of the design.

Assembly

If you value your work, then before you give the framed embroidery for decoration, you need to find out what technology these masters use.

There are several possible ways to "block" embroidery, which are used in different workshops. However, not everyone will be successful.

The canvas is cut to the size of the baguette, not fixed

In some places, they do this: the canvas from the embroidery is cut to the size of the selected frame, after which everything necessary (backdrop, mat, embroidery and glass) is put into the frame and fixed in it, but the components are not attached to each other.

Advantages of this assembly method

  • It is likely that such an embroidery design will be cheaper than the others.
  • If necessary, the decorated work will be easy to disassemble and get the embroidery.

Minuses

  • You will not be able to decorate the embroidery in a different way, since the canvas has already been cut off.
  • Gaps may be visible if, in places, the embroidery does not fit snugly enough to the frame or mat.
  • The fact that the canvas has a pronounced direction of the threads can also spoil the overall impression of the work, due to which the canvas, not fixed in the frame, will be located crookedly relative to the edges of the mat or frame.

As a result, we see that this technique has more minuses than pluses.

The canvas is cut but fixed

There are workshops where the embroidery is cut off, but glued either to the passe-partout or to the cardboard using double-sided tape.

pros

Among the pluses, it can only be noted that the work fits more tightly to the frame or passport (while the likelihood of gaps remains).

Minuses

  • Aligning the canvas qualitatively (so that the cells run exactly parallel to the edge of the mat or frame) is not always possible.
  • It will not work otherwise to decorate the product, since the canvas has already been cut;
  • Getting rid of the adhesive layer left from the adhesive tape will be problematic if you decide to disassemble the finished work.

The canvas is attached to the stretcher with a stapler

In some workshops, embroidery is stretched onto a wooden stretcher, after which it is fixed with a stapler.

However, this method is possible only for large-sized embroideries, in addition, it is a very laborious process. The use of a stretcher is more appropriate in the design of batiks, hand-drawn paintings and woven tapestries, but not embroideries, unless, of course, this is carpet embroidery.

The canvas is stretched and fixed with threads

There is another option for fixing and designing embroidery in a frame, which makes it possible almost perfect result from the technical side. In this case, the product is pulled onto a sufficiently dense cardboard with threads. When stretched, the canvas is aligned, and thus the cells of the canvas run perfectly parallel to the edge of the cardboard on which it was stretched.

When if the embroidery is made without a passe-partout, then the cardboard with the work corresponds to the internal size of the frame. If a passe-partout is supposed, then the embroidery stretched on cardboard should be larger than the "window" of the passe-partout by 5-7 mm on each side, in order to attach it easily. Most often, the cardboard with the product is attached to the back of the passe-partout using the usual wide adhesive tape, but before fixing the embroidery, it is aligned in the passe-partout on the front side.

The assembly of a small-sized work in this version can be done at home, but for this you need to order everything you need (glass, two cardboard boxes: for the backdrop and for stretching, passe-partout and frame) as a set in a framing workshop.

Ready-made kit for work design (without beads, of course))

Self-design of products larger than A5 is undesirable, since at home the outer backdrop will also be inserted inside and the frame may lose some of its rigidity.

pros

  • It is possible to design embroidery without glass, which means it will be easy to remove the product for washing.
  • The embroidery is fixed in the frame evenly.
  • If necessary, the product can be easily re-registered into another passe-partout or baguette.
  • Embroidery is easy to assemble and disassemble at home.
  • With this design, the canvas is not cut off.

Minuses

  • This method is more expensive, but it depends on the chosen company and its pricing policy.
  • More time for registration will be required due to the complexity of the process.

Now, knowing in more detail about the materials used by the craftsmen, as well as having new knowledge regarding assembly methods, you can be more professional in choosing a framing workshop, where your requirements and wishes will be taken into account.

Categories
  • place images of different sizes and shapes in the same or the same frame style;
  • the reverse technique - an ordered series of images placed in frames that are contrasting in color, profile, ornament (but the same in style and size) - also works, but it requires careful study and caution when choosing, otherwise it is easy to "lead" the interior to kitsch.

Elements of a modern interior: decoration with paintings, photo panels and posters

A rational approach to space and the functionality of each of its elements are, perhaps, the basic principles of modern interior design. When decorating an office or apartment in a modern way, lightness and simplicity are important: the key materials of the elements are glass, metal, and artificial composite materials. One of its main features is the desire for open space: often zoning is done only by furniture details and elements, therefore, when choosing wall images, as a rule, they pay more attention to their proportions and the dominant color of the picture or photograph. In open interiors, when decorating walls with paintings, panels or posters, it is recommended to use color contrasts and large drawings to add dynamics and complexity to the space, arranging images in a minimalistic frame design or doing without a frame at all.

In modern living spaces, when decorating an apartment or a living room with paintings, a baguette of the simplest forms is chosen to match the image or contrast. In the first case, the frame “plays in unison” with the image itself, which, as a rule, is a color accent of the interior, in the second case, it is itself a bright color spot that attracts attention. Most often, metal is used for framing: thin silvery lines of metal frames easily limit the image without weighing it down, and their “maximum minimalism” is perfectly combined with the principles of modern design.

Following the basic principles of style, you need to remember the most important thing: rules are there to be broken. Sometimes a deliberate disregard for principles creates solutions of amazing beauty and integrity that make the interior unique and memorable. In the end, all modern trends in design were once “born” from a violation of the canons that have become classic.

We create a mood: we select paintings for interiors in accordance with their purpose

There are images that are neutral in perception, which can be used to decorate almost any interior, unmistakably fitting into the habitable space. On the other hand, a well-chosen canvas can not only add coziness to the room, but also “correct” the emotions and feelings of its inhabitants. For the design of rooms for various purposes, plots are selected that directly or indirectly resonate with the purpose of the premises. An ideal choice would be one that emphasizes or enhances the “necessary” emotions for this particular interior. For example, a typical choice for a bedroom is neutral in style and soothing, relaxing compositions; however, by decorating the bedroom with nude posters, you can achieve the opposite effect. Generally speaking, the walls of residential premises, whose purpose is to be a refuge and a “safe haven”, a place of rest from external negativity, whether it be a kitchen, a bedroom or an office, are decorated with subjects that are calm in all respects. For more "active" residential and public areas (living rooms, offices, auditoriums, etc.), you can choose stronger "emotion generators".

Important! Whatever the choice, the basic rule must be respected: the art object must not evoke negative emotions in the observer.

Art does not tolerate falsehood and pretentiousness. If we talk about painting, then anya picture, no matter who painted it - a master or a student, must first of all be sincere.

Painting decoration- a crucial stage that requires not only taste and feeling measures, but also certain knowledge.

People who understand that a baguette should complementor emphasizing the storyline and the color scheme chosen by the author, not so much.

Our advice for those who do not want to be considered ignorant, choosing a decorative frame exclusively for the surrounding interior.

Principles for selecting a baguette

Traditional painting principles it is advisable to study before, and not after buying a baguette. Focus only on the quality of the material,

What the frame is made of is improvident. It is believed that wooden baguettes are suitable for all paintings. This is partly true, but the tree, especially its hard varieties,

Of which frames are usually made, it is expensive.Ash, pear, oak and cherry baguettes will undoubtedly last a long time, but you will have to pay much more for them than,

like plastic ones. The pine profile is somewhat cheaper, but it also looks unpretentious.

Having become interested in the question of how to frame a picture in a baguette, many pay attention to plastic forms.

It must be admitted that they are stamped and painted so skillfully that they can become an artistic masterpiece in their own right.

However, before buying, you need to be aware of the shortcomings that are inherent in this material.

plastic baguette visually difficult to distinguish from wood, however, it is not suitable for large-scale canvases, as it does not hold its shape well.

If you intend to hang a life-size reproduction of Aivazovsky's "The Ninth Wave" on the wall, then you need to buy a solid wooden baguette.

Options for such a design of paintings can be viewed here: by choosing the appropriate style and size.

Forms and types of baguettes

The classification of frames by shape is based not on their geometry (rectangle, square, oval), but on the peculiarities of the location of relief points,

which, as a rule, is present on a baguette. There are several profile forms:

1 TO classical - the highest point of the relief is located closer to the edge. Reproductions from the canvases of Russian and Western European artists, who “saw perspective” in rural landscapes, perfectly “fit” into such a baguette.

2. Reverse - the location of the highest point is shifted to the inner perimeter, visually bringing the picture closer to the viewer.

3. Composite - a combination of the first two types, which allows you to increase the area of \u200b\u200bthe profile.

4. Flat - does not have differences in height, so it looks quite concise. Suitable for the design of pencil sketches, works written in modern styles.

How flat profile varieties are used:

  • slips - internal inserts made in a classic form. They increase the width of the frame.
  • office forms - have an identical decorative finish along the inner and outer perimeter of the baguette.

Follow the proportions and color selection rules:

Draw canvases in dark colors in a baguette half a tone darker or lighter;

Under the warm tones of the picture, frames painted in warm shades are suitable, under cold ones - plain, translucent.

H don’t be smart with the ornament - it must be made in the same style as the picture.

The depth of the profile is selected taking into account the lighting and the place where the canvas will hang (the profile should not cast a shadow and hide the picture when viewed from the side).

It will be very nice if these adviсe will help novice collectors and artists to present their work "in the best light".

When choosing a baguette, remember the colors and style of the artist:enclosing copies of famous masters in metal-plastic baguettes a la a photo frame is a sign of bad taste.

The frame should be consonant with the plot of the picture, only then it will carry living energy.

When it comes to human visual perception, it is impossible to establish rigid formal rules. I've put together some tips for decorating artwork here to give you something to start from.

Decoration gives the picture a finished look, enhances the impression, is the link between the image and the surrounding surfaces and helps to fit the picture into the interior. The design style is determined by your taste and the plot of the work. And the way of registration is the technique of execution of the work. The design of paintings is different from the design of graphic works.

How to arrange a painting

Frame

The frame is the link between the interior and the painting, where the painting plays the dominant role.

The frame is made from a baguette. Baguette - a wooden, metal or plastic profile designed for framing works of art. Wooden baguette is the most expensive. Plastic is the cheapest.

Baguettes are simple and curly profile. It is right to choose a baguette with an ornament and texture that complements or repeats the motif of the picture. If the picture is dominated by a line and simple shapes, then a straight baguette of a simple profile is most suitable. If the picture has a lot of small details and curlicues, then the baguette will be appropriate, in this case the plot of the picture smoothly passes to the frame.

How to choose the color of the baguette frame

The color of the baguette is most often chosen half a tone darker or half a tone lighter than the main color of the picture. Thus, a light baguette is most suitable for light paintings, and a dark baguette for dark ones. But exceptions are not rare. A contrasting baguette can create an interesting accent.

It is important to combine the colors of the picture and the baguette.

  • The cold shade of the wooden frame - bleached oak, unpainted light wood, silver - fits the picture with predominant cold tones (blue, green, purple, gray).
  • The warm shade of the frame - walnut, mahogany, gold - will suit the picture in warm colors (red, orange, yellow, brown)
  • Shades of natural wood are suitable for almost all works.
Baguette width

A wide, classic frame with gold and intricate carvings is best suited to paintings painted in the academic painting method and will take its place in the interior of the corresponding style. The fact is that before the Impressionists, paintings were always designed individually. The frame was carved from wood, taking into account the tone, details and plot of the canvas. The paintings were painted to order or selected, consistent with the style and decor of the interior. Therefore, the interiors of palaces and rich estates look unified and thoughtfully. Now these works can be seen in museums and art galleries. The frame itself is a work of art and continues the picture, enhancing the effect:

In modern interiors, a rich carved frame will not find support in decor and style. Most likely, few people will dare to hang a reproduction of Van Gogh in such a frame:

But you can choose a frame with a simpler profile. The main thing is that it fits the picture and the interior. The more details in the picture - the more intricate profile you can apply.

You have to be very careful with contrasts. Often 2 or more frames are used for framing. This allows you to achieve an interesting visual effect. But with great care, you should treat the contrasting colors of the internal frames. It is important to remember that the picture should move into the frame without tripping over its accents. Not a frame, but the picture is the main thing.

For planar painting, a baguette is suitable, emphasizing the plane.

For small paintings, it can be a good decision to choose a wide baguette, it will visually enlarge the picture and emphasize its significance.

How to make graphics

Graphics are done on paper. These are engraving, lithography, etching; drawing with ink, ink, charcoal, sanguine, pastel, pencils. Calligraphy and watercolor are also related to graphics. Graphics (Greek γραφικος) - written. This is an artistic image on paper using lines, strokes, spots, dots.

Graphic works require special design in order not to fade, crumble or tear. Graphic design usually includes:

  • glass
  • passe-partout

Frame for graphics

  • For the design of graphic monochrome works, black and white frames are most often used.
  • For color graphics black, white, natural wood, gold, color.

Passepartout

Passepartout is the margin between the frame and the image. Internal frame made of white or colored thick cardboard. Passepartout improves the perception of the work, helps the viewer to focus on the image, create a neutral zone between the frame and the image. The cutting can be oval, round or rectangular, the inner edge facing the image is most often beveled.

How to choose the width of the passe-partout

The visual perception of a person is arranged in such a way that for a harmonious perception of an object vertically, its lower part must have a slightly greater visual weight. Therefore, the bottom of the passe-partout should be a little wider. Equal-width passe-partout is more practical, it can be used for both vertical and horizontal arrangement, which allows saving in mass production. But if you order an individual design in a framing workshop, you have more options. Sometimes it is enough to slightly increase the bottom field - and the perception of the image improves significantly.

The width of the mat is most often in the range from 1/3 to 1/2 of the narrow side of the image.

  • left and right sides are the same
  • the bottom is a little wider
  • upper slightly narrower or equal to lateral.

For clarity, an example of an equal-width passe-partout and with a wide bottom:

Or even like this:

How to choose the color of the passe-partout

The color of the passe-partout for black and white graphics is better to choose white, black or gray.

  • The white color of the mat creates an optical effect in which the image is "squeezed" out of the plane, comes to the fore and even seems larger.
  • A black mat, on the contrary, deepens the image, puts it outside the frame, it seems smaller.
  • Gray color is neutral, but not always suitable for the interior.

You can use this method to determine the color: make the mat a little darker than the lightest part of the picture, or a little lighter than the darkest. This technique will prevent the image from merging with the frame.

For color graphics, you can use not only white-black-gray mats, but also color ones. Choose calm, muted colors to match any element of the image. Sometimes it is suitable to make a passe-partout to match the background of the image and add this “air” to the picture.

You can use several mats at the same time to achieve a certain effect. In this case, one frame is superimposed on another with a shift. The upper mat is often made lighter, the lower one is darker, the "tunnel effect" gives depth to the work.

On the Internet, there are shops with a designer that allows you to try on the work in a frame and passe-partout, as well as roughly imagine the cost of registration. Here it is by uploading the picture.

It happens that graphic works are drawn up with a zero passe-partout. In this case, it does not act as a design element, but gives the necessary distance between glass and paper. It is especially important to maintain this distance for pastel work, where there is a risk of destruction of the image when touching the glass. Zero passe-partout or a deep frame without a passe-partout can sometimes achieve an interesting artistic effect.

Glass

  • Simple
  • Anti-glare
  • Museum

Plain glass is the most affordable option, but there is a problem: ordinary glass glares, reflecting what is happening around and light sources. The picture is impossible to see or photograph. In this case, it is important to consider the correct location of the picture relative to the window and lighting fixtures. But even better - order immediately anti-reflective glass.

Anti-reflective glass - frosted. A ray of light falling on glass is not reflected, but scattered. The effect is achieved by processing one or two glass planes in such a way that the glass surface becomes slightly rough. It is believed that the light transmission of such glass is reduced. I did not notice, I really like this particular type of glass, all the graphic works in my house are decorated using anti-reflective glass. I recommend

But for gourmets, there is another type that combines the advantages of simple with the advantages of anti-glare - museum glass. Museum glass blocks most of the ultraviolet radiation from daylight, which protects paper and paint from fading and fading. Reflects less than 1% of incident light, (typically 8%). Museum glass is called non-reflective. It is not cloudy, completely transparent, glare-free achieved through expensive processing. The highest quality glass with a low iron content is taken as raw material. Such glass on the cut will be white, unlike the usual "green" glass. The incident light flux is not reflected from the glass, but passes through it. There is only one disadvantage of such glass - the cost.

I wish you good luck with your artwork. This exciting creative activity will make you suffer, but in the end it will bring a lot of positive emotions.

Important:

  1. Rules can and should be broken if you feel like doing the right thing in a particular case. Imagine the work in your interior and the solution will come by itself.
  2. If the picture fits well into your interior in terms of color and plot, most likely you will easily decorate it. If the picture does not fit into the interior in any way, it is better to purchase another picture.
  3. The picture may not be drawn at all. Contemporary painting is increasingly being created on gallery and museum stretchers. The thickness of such a stretcher is 3 - 5 cm or more. The image comes to the ends of the canvas and the picture takes on a three-dimensional finished look.
