Do you like drawings in Photoshop that look realistic? If you answered yes, then this lesson is for you. Today we will learn how to draw realistic fur. Step by step we will draw a wolf using a photo from deviantART. Let's get started.

Step 1

First of all, you need to find a good quality photo - a sharp and high-resolution photo is fine.

Open the photo in Photoshop and save it as a new file. Select the Lasso Tool (L). Make sure the "Add to selection" option is selected. And select the entire shape of the body of the wolf. It's good to highlight the desired area in small parts, so you don't lose all your work if something goes wrong.

Here's what our final selection looks like:

Create a new layer and use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill the selection. We use the main color of the wolf's coat - gray. Rename this layer to "Base".

Set the Opacity of this layer to 25% so that you can see what is behind this layer. Create a new layer and apply with a brush a few basic lines of the figure.

Set the opacity of the "Base" layer back to 100%. From now on, the original image should be only to peep the details of our future drawing, otherwise you will not learn anything.

Use the Crop -C tool to make the sketched canvas bigger and place the original image next to it.

Step 2

Create a new layer between the "Base" layer and the sketch. Open the menu and select "Create Clipping Mask". Anything you draw on this layer will remain within the "Base" layer. Select the tool Brush (brush) and open the options for this tool, as shown in the image. Lower the opacity of the sketch so it doesn't bother us. Then apply the first color from the palette to the "Clipping Mask" layer. Colors can be taken with the Color Picker (I) from the original image to create a realistic effect. These colors are needed to create shadows and highlights in an image.

Step 3

Let's change the resolution as shown in the image below to 300 (if your computer is good enough, you can try setting it higher).

Now let's look at the original image to see how the fur grows on the wolf.

Draw some hair guides on the "Clipping Mask" layer.

If you wish to paint short hairs, set the scatter in the brush settings.

The fur of real animals can "break" in certain places. It is very important to emphasize this. Choose a darker color and mark these "cracks" where they are needed.

Cover the "cracks" with small villi.

Now define the lighter places in the picture.

Step 6

Time to add details to the face of the wolf. Draw the nose and eyes with dark color.

Add some light using a hard brush. Blue color. The mode is “Linear Light”, which will make the eyes shine. The nose needs to be moistened a little.

Step 7

We draw the claws in black. Don't make them too sharp.

Step 8

Back to the "Base" layer. Take the Smudge tool and make the hairs more natural and intertwined.

Step 9

Merge the "Base" layer with all the "Clipping Mask" layers. Then duplicate the layer (Ctrl + J) and convert it again to "Clipping Mask". You will be able to edit the whole picture without going beyond the edges of the wolf's body.

We give wool a natural look. We go to the "Quick Mask" mode. Select a soft brush (0% hardness) and paint the fur in the direction as shown in the picture below.

Click on the Quick Mask mode button, then if your selection is inverted (outer parts selected), press Ctrl + Shift + I. Then Filters > Blur > Motion Blur and select the wool direction as shown in the image below.

Now repeat these steps for all areas of the wolf's body that you can find.

Step 10

Let's add some more cracks.

Let's add some short hairs growing in different directions.

We draw fur in Photoshop.

Make a brush consisting of several dots of different sizes. The size of the tocher depends on the size and resolution of your work. Also make sure that there are not too many points, otherwise the texture will be too visible due to repetition. Once the brush is done, set spacing to "1" in the brush menu. I use several brushes, here is an example of two of them.

Step 2 - Make the base color neutral, the base color a little darker and start painting with short strokes. Don't worry if it comes out a little sloppy.

Step 3 - With a lighter color, paint on top of more strokes. In fact, fur is made up of many different colors. You may look at your dog and think "brown", but look closer and you'll see many shades. Also remember that the fur is unlikely to be clearly straight, so make the lines curved.

Step 4 - In this step I painted more dark hair in the background and lighter hair in the foreground. I drew from my cat - he has a white "patch" of fur under his chin. I also made some gold strokes over the dark part to add highlights:

Step 5 - Great... now we have a good base, we can continue to work and emphasize some individual hairs. At this stage, I touch up the sloppy parts of the base to achieve realism. With the help of a small round brush paint some hairs. You can smear them a little with your finger. Usually the wool lies in layers, so draw a shadow in some places:

Step 6 - Finishing touches. We add the last hairs and color spots where necessary. I added some red shades and bright light. And the fur is ready!

I have different brushes, but here I'm giving two as an example... you can use those too!

Step 2. To get started, choose a fairly neutral background. As a paint color, choose a tone slightly darker than the background and start painting with wide, short strokes. If you're using a mouse to paint, it's worth setting the brush to "fade" because you don't have control over the pressure. Don't worry if it gets messy ;)

Step 3. In a lighter tone, start applying strokes over the initial drawing. In fact, the coat consists of hairs of different shades, to see this, look at your dog, you know that he is "red", but if you look closely, you will see a lot of variations in the shade of the coat. You should also keep in mind that the coat should not be harsh and straight, because in fact it is soft and thin.

Step 4. At this point, I start painting the dark fur again, and then I add a lighter one on top. As an example, I considered my cat, which has white hair - right under the chin. Also here I added dark golden hairs in some of the dark areas to add some light.

Step 5. OK... now that we have a nice base, we can sharpen and highlight the individual hairs. At this stage, I usually paint over some particularly dirty areas of the background and add brightness to some strands of wool. Use a small round brush to paint individual hairs. If necessary, you can go back a little and use a sponge (smadge) to smooth out the image where you think you need to redo something. Often the wool lies in "layers", so under such a "layer" there should be a shadow.

Step 6. So here are some final touches... Add some final hairs and add splashes of color where needed. Here I also added a rusty red and slightly highlighted the dark outline around the brighter hairs.

In this small lesson you will get acquainted with the technique of drawing a wolf. I paid special attention to such aspects as wool drawing, eyes, nose and other small parts. This lesson was created in Photoshop, but you can use any other graphics editor that includes analog functions.

To draw the wolf, I used a graphics tablet, which I highly recommend to you. Details such as fur can be drawn using the mouse, but it will take much longer and patience.

Final result:

Step 1 Open Photoshop and create a new document. Create a new layer on top of the background layer. Select a small hard round brush and sketch out the wolf.

If you are using a scanned image as an example, then place it above all layers in the layers palette. For this layer, use the blending mode Multiply (Multiply), which will allow you to add color to the bottom layer, but at the same time see the outline of the sketch.

Step 2. Go to the Brush Tool (B) (Brush) large size, hardness 100% and on a new layer paint over the sketch with the base color. This layer should be below the outline layer. When you sketch around the edges, reduce the brush size for convenience.

To get a light fluff around the edges, select the Smudge Tool (R) (Finger) and create strands of wool. In this case, you can also use a small, hard brush and paint the hairs one after the other, or you can use the two together.

Step 3 Select the Airbrush Pen Opacity Flow from the standard set of brushes or the Airbrush brush from another set and paint the wolf with different colors.

For a more realistic result, try to change the color for the brush as often as possible. Also at this stage, you need to determine the guide shadows, but they just need to be sketched.

Note: when adding different tones of colors, for convenience, limit the area that you are going to paint. Above the base color layer, create a new layer, then hold down the Alt key and click on the line between the new layer and the base color layer. As a result, when painting, the bottom layer will limit the top layer, and the brush strokes will not go beyond the borders.

Step 4 Delete the sketch (outline) of the wolf or make it invisible. Now let's work with the tones that we applied. Use the same brush as before and blend the shadows together. Select a sample of intermediate shades with the Eyedropper Tool (I) (Pipette) and mix them until you get smooth transitions. The opacity of the brush should be 100%. For additional mixing of colors, use the Smudge Tool (Finger). Refer to the image below.

Note: when applying color, orientation to the photo helps a lot. You must also decide on the image of the wolf that you want to draw and keep its image constantly in your mind. Will it be an arctic wolf, a Eurasian wolf, a forest wolf, or a coyote? Will it be red, white, black, gray or brown? It all depends on your imagination.

STEP 5 Let's start with the nose, as it contains fairly simple tones. To draw the point texture of the nose, use different brushes. In most cases, I use two of these brushes:

  1. Airbrush Pen Opacity Flow with a Minimum Diameter value of 0%. This option is located in the brush settings panel in the Shape Dynamics tab.
  2. Hard brush (B) round with function Pen pressure (Pen pressure) and Opacity (Opacity) 100%.

To illuminate the nose area, use different tones of browns and blues. For a more realistic effect, add some low light.

STEP 6. At this stage, we will start working with the eyes. Add some rough shades, you need to designate the pupil, as well as the general outline of the eye.

Add highlights and darken blacks where needed. Remember that the eye should have highlights and not be wet, but damp. for highlights, use mid-tones of gray, but never white. With the help of small dots you can set the texture.

Now we will add dark tones to the eye. At the top, use a dark brown color to connect the pupils with the top shadows. Since the eye is round, you need to properly shade it. To make the eye more realistic and interesting, add shades of other colors. And at the end of the work on the eye, add highlights and a translucent reflection. Also do not forget to draw eyelashes.

STEP 7 To start drawing the fur, I chose the muzzle as a starting point. Since it consists of thin and terminal hairs, it is therefore the easiest to start with.

For such fine work, we need a round hard brush (B) with a value of Opacity (Opacity) 100%, use a small brush size within 3 - 5 pixels - it all depends on the size of the document you created. Draw the hairs one by one, be sure to use the eyedropper to sample the colors and experiment with multiple shades. This is quite a painstaking work, it will take a lot of patience. It all depends on the size of the image of the wolf you are creating, many of the hairs will be invisible a little later - but this will give more realism to the coat.

Step 8 In this step we will draw even more wool in different areas, the main thing is to decide on the type of wool and its length. In those places where there are less than six, it is necessary to use brighter and lighter shades. For areas with thicker hair, more variations with tones should be used. Thick lines also add volume to the coat. The more you use different shades, the more realistic the coat will look. All hairs of wool cannot be directed in one direction, especially if it is a wild wolf. Therefore, on a new layer, draw a few additional strands of hair, different from the rest of the wool.

Note: for areas that are shadowed, darker tones should be used. To create interesting and eye-pleasing effects on a new layer, add additional colors and experiment with blending modes.

STEP 9 At this stage, we will again work with wool. Another way to give wool a realistic look is to apply rather unexpected changes in colors. As a result, the coat will gain more volume, since most of the villi will be visible. Choose a hard brush with 100% opacity and experiment with light and dark brush strokes. For convenience, work on separate layers.

Note: instead of brush opacity, experiment with Flow (Press). With the help of parameters such as Pen pressure (Pen pressure) and Flow (Pressure) you can draw a little noticeable lines. For Flow (Pressure) try to use values ​​in the range of 15 - 30% to achieve the best results, change the pressure of the pen from time to time.

Step 10 While painting the hair on the edges, if necessary, you can redraw the hairs on the first layer to blend them thoroughly. See the image below: in the ear area and below it, the hairs have been redrawn, and the edge to the right of the ear is the original.

This can be done with the same small brush with hard edges. Draw new hairs and erase the extra ones in order to achieve a more natural look. It is very important to determine the direction in which they should be located.

Note: draw hairs of different sizes, as the strands of wool do not have to be the same length. Also combine strands of different thicknesses using the Smudge Tool (Finger).

Step 11 We're almost there! After a long and fruitful work, you should finish the process of drawing small hairs near the nose and eyes. Now we move on to drawing longer and thicker hairs in the neck area.

Note: I draw your attention to how the hairs on the neck are located - they practically stick together, forming separate strands. The strands on the neck should be thicker than the strands on the muzzle, so they should not be drawn so carefully.

Step 12 On those parts of the neck where necessary, draw more six. To do this, use a brush with hard edges, but larger (5 - 10 pixels) and lower the value Flow (Press). Precision is not needed here, simply mark the main strands.

Using the tool SmudgeTool (Finger) connect the hairs together to give them softness and lack of clarity.

Step 13. Continue to draw long hairs in the form of small and thin strokes of the brush, and where necessary, smear the edges. Keep doing this until you reach a satisfactory result.

Some details require additional adjustments. In the nose area, add a mustache, and draw sparse long strands around the eyes. Also paint on sparse strands of wool that are knocked out of the main wool to give the wolf a wilder and more natural look.

Step 14 The last thing left to do is add a suitable background. It can be an image with flowers or any other. For this illustration, I chose a sky image that has a nice mix of light and dark tones.

Blur the background by applying the filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur), set the radius value to your liking. The main thing is to make the background blurry enough so that you can't make out the main shapes on it.


The image below shows my layers panel. Some layers were merged during the drawing process.

Step 15 In this step we will add the finishing touches. I added some light background lighting to the image.

Make a duplicate of the blurred background layer and for the copy change the blending mode to Hard Light (Hard light), Soft Light (Soft light) or Overlay (Overlap) - choose at your discretion.

Now we need to slightly reduce the depth of light and dark areas for this use Curves (Curves). Just do not overdo it - the main thing is to preserve naturalness.


To give a soft light to the entire image, apply correction Photo Filters (Photo filter). Experiment with cool and warm filters and different colors to get the effect you want.

Our work is ready! After some pretty hard work, enjoy the end result. If you are not satisfied with any moments, then you can always go back and fix everything.

Remember that adding too many extra details can ruin your work. Be careful!

How to do it: first decide which brushes you will use to create the fur (their colors, transparency, size ...) and save each separately by opening the tab Toolpresetpicker(1 ) on the brush tool's property bar. Then you need to press the button CreatenewToolpreset(2 ) and for the convenience of searching in the list - assign a name ( 3 ).

Now, when changing a brush while working, you just need to open the tab with the list of saved brushes and select the tool with the desired settings! Very comfortably!!!)))
Well, now let's move on to creating fur!

We will create fur on the coat of the Snow Maiden.
I began to draw fur last, when everything else was ready. So you can immediately see how the fur edge looks.
To begin with, with a soft NON-WHITE brush, I painted the base of the fur edge.
When creating the base, you can lower the Opacity ( Opacity) brushes.


Immediately after that, I sketched reflexes. Why immediately? Because it is more convenient to distribute the fur (i.e. you can immediately see which brush to choose). And so that at the end of a long work you don’t have to redo it, if, for example, light fur appeared in an incomprehensible way against a dark background.
I placed the layer with reflections at the very top.

Where to start drawing? Better with small details (in this case, a hat, sleeves). It will and sample(you should periodically look there - the length of the villi, the density of the fur, the distribution of color, etc., so that different parts of the fur product do not differ from each other) and training, if it does not work out the first time, we will save time spent on a large piece.

So I started with the hat.
For work, it is more convenient to maximize the document, but in real size it is necessary to periodically view the result.

I used three brushes: white - 50% opacity, gray - 30% opacity, blue - 20% opacity.
I painted with each brush on a separate layer and for convenience I called them like this: light, grey, blue. On the one hand, it takes time to create layers and move through the layers in the process of drawing, but on the other hand, it is easy to make corrections and the progress of work is clear. In the end, it only saves time. And to remake ... there is nothing worse!
Here I applied another brush adjustment (see screenshot):

So the fur becomes more fluffy ... compare.
The drawing algorithm is simple: I started with light fur, then gray, then blue.
Hair should be slightly out of bounds Basics fur. If necessary basis can be erased with an eraser.

Above the layer with reflections, I created a layer - Additional fur. Here final corrections and additions were made for all parts of the fur trim.

When working, I tried to keep the magnification scale of the document constant - it is more convenient to draw small details the same way. As I said, when drawing the following fur details, it is advisable to look at the first option as a model.
The work plan is the same. Drawing on different layers saves time in the end, but makes the document look bigger. Everywhere has its pluses and minuses)))

It remains to create an edge on the shoulders and along the edge of the fur coat.
I made fasteners on the Snow Maiden's fur coat. It must be remembered that the villi of the fur climb onto such details.

The arrows in the screenshot show the direction of the fur.


The screenshots do not clearly show the difference in the drawing process. Therefore, I am not writing instructions, but tips for independent creativity.

And now let's try to draw some separate fur object, well, the same hat. Only entirely fur.
First, let's decide on the style and color, take a brush.


I have used these colors. But there can be many more of them, or rather there should be more of them. But within the framework of the lessons we will limit ourselves to this number.
I got 6 brushes with different transparency (the dark ones are the most invisible).
Let's start with creating Basics hats with a soft brush. To create it, you can lower the Opacity ( Opacity), as I have said.


Then I drew the fur according to the same plan. First, I decided on the direction of the fur and Forward:
- different colors - on different layers,
-changing the opacity of not only the brushes, but also the layers themselves,
- sometimes adding blurry copies of layers (it is better to reduce their opacity to a minimum).
And another tip is to change the background color in order to see the shortcomings and immediately correct them. For example: draw on white - periodically look at black.



Remember shadows...


How I drew fur on small pumps ... I drew only one pump, and simply copied on others))) and transformed as needed.

It will and sample(you should periodically look there - the length of the villi, the density of the fur, the distribution of color, etc., so that different parts of the fur product do not differ from each other) and training, if it does not work out the first time, we will save time spent on a large piece.

So I started with the hat.
For work, it is more convenient to maximize the document, but in real size it is necessary to periodically view the result.

I used three brushes: white - 50% opacity, gray - 30% opacity, blue - 20% opacity.
I painted with each brush on a separate layer and for convenience I called them like this: light, grey, blue. On the one hand, it takes time to create layers and move through the layers in the process of drawing, but on the other hand, it is easy to make corrections and the progress of work is clear. In the end, it only saves time. And to remake ... there is nothing worse!
Here I applied another brush adjustment (see screenshot):

So the fur becomes more fluffy ... compare.
The drawing algorithm is simple: I started with light fur, then gray, then blue.
Hair should be slightly out of bounds Basics fur. If necessary basis can be erased with an eraser.

The arrows indicate the direction of the fur villi.
The distribution of fur villi is different in each case, this is just an example.

Above the layer with reflections, I created a layer - Additional fur. Here final corrections and additions were made for all parts of the fur trim.
The shadow from the fur of the cap also has the right to be)))

The hat is ready.
Now we draw the fur on the sleeves.
When working, I tried to keep the magnification scale of the document constant - it is more convenient to draw small details the same way. As I said, when drawing the following fur details, it is advisable to look at the first option as a model.
The work plan is the same. Drawing on different layers saves time in the end, but makes the document look bigger. Everywhere has its pluses and minuses)))

It remains to create an edge on the shoulders and along the edge of the fur coat.
I made fasteners on the Snow Maiden's fur coat. It must be remembered that the villi of the fur climb onto such details.

The arrows in the screenshot show the direction of the fur.

The screenshots do not clearly show the difference in the drawing process. Therefore, I am not writing instructions, but tips for independent creativity.
Here's what I ended up with.

And now let's try to draw some separate fur object, well, the same hat. Only entirely fur.
First, let's decide on the style and color, take a brush.

I have used these colors. But there can be many more of them, or rather there should be more of them. But within the framework of the lessons we will limit ourselves to this number.
I got 6 brushes with different transparency (the dark ones are the most inconspicuous).
Let's start with creating Basics hats with a soft brush. To create it, you can lower the Opacity ( Opacity), as I have said.

Then I drew the fur according to the same plan. First, I decided on the direction of the fur and Forward:
- different colors - on different layers,
-changing the opacity of not only the brushes, but also the layers themselves,
- sometimes adding blurry copies of layers (it is better to reduce their opacity to a minimum).
And another tip is to change the background color in order to see the shortcomings and immediately correct them. For example: draw on white - periodically look at black.

Remember shadows...

How I drew fur on small pumps ... I drew only one pump, and simply copied on others))) and transformed as needed.

Add a shadow from the cap.
I tweaked the levels a little more.
