Russian names of Slavic origin. Old Slavic names and their meaning

25.04.2019

How to name the child, my husband and I could not decide for a very long time, we finally chose the name only after the birth. But we were sure of one thing - the name would be two-part. After all, it is precisely such names that are understandable to all Slavic peoples without translation, they are part of our history and our culture (and not Greek or Roman).
That's what we named our daughter Miloslava.

The name determines the fate of a person. This is the key to his inner self. After all, it was not without reason that in Rus' a person had two names, one - false, for everyone, and the other - secret, only for the person himself and his very close people. This tradition existed as a protection against unkind spirits and unkind people. Often the first Slavic name was deliberately unattractive (Kriv, Nekras, Malice), for even greater protection from the evil. After all, without a key to the essence of man, it is much more difficult to cause evil. The rite of second naming was performed in adolescence, when the main character traits were formed. The name was given based on these traits.
Slavic names abounded in their diversity, there were groups of names:
1) Names from the animal and plant world (Pike, Ruff, Hare, Wolf, Eagle, Nut, Borsch)
2) Names in order of birth (Pervusha, Vtorak, Tretyak)
3) Names of gods and goddesses (Lada, Yarilo)
4) Names according to human qualities (Brave, Stoyan)
5) And the main group of names - two-basic (Svyatoslav, Dobrozhir, Tikhomir, Ratibor, Yaropolk, Gostomysl, Velimudr, Vsevolod, Bogdan, Dobrogneva, Lyubomila, Miroljub, Svetozar) and their derivatives (Svyatosha, Dobrynya, Tishilo, Ratisha, Putyata, Yarilka , Miloneg).
From the listed names, it is easy to trace the process of creating a derivative name: the second part is cut off from the two-base one and a suffix or ending is added (-neg, -lo, -ta, -tka, -sha, -yata, -nya, -ka).
Example: Svyatoslav: Holy + sha = Holy.
Of course, the names of people carry a significant part of the culture and traditions of the whole people. In Russia, with the advent of Christianity, Slavic names almost completely fell into oblivion. There were lists of Slavic names forbidden by the church. Why this happened is not difficult to guess. One part of the names (Lada, Yarilo) were the names of the Slavic gods, the owners of the second part were people who, even after the Christianization of Rus', tried to restore the cult and traditions (magicians, heroes). To date, only 5% of children in Russia are called Slavic names, which certainly impoverishes the already meager Slavic culture.
The purpose of this article is not only the introduction of the concept of truly Russian names into the people. The following not rare situation can serve as an example: The girl was named Gorislava. Neighbors, surprised at the unusual name, say: "They couldn't call me Ira or Katya in Russian" - without comment. The main goal of the satya is to create a global list of Slavic names with an attempt to determine the meanings of the names and comparisons with historical and legendary figures.

Binary Slavic names

">

">">
">">">

M 2nd article - about the disappearing binomial Old Slavonic names. Why Old Slavonic? Because scholars in Poland, such as Prof. Malec from the Institute of the Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow, and in Yugoslavia, such as Prof. Cirkovic from the University of Nowy Sad, agree that it is the binomial names that are the most archaic, the most typical, and the most relevant. to the ancient Slavic community and its elites.

Names consisting of two words had their own deep meaning and pronunciation. Unfortunately, today the SLAVES no longer understand the meaning of their names. Worst of all, however, is that these names are becoming less and less. (In Poland, only some 10% of all names).

Therefore, with my essay, I want to call for the salvation of "Old Slavic binomial names." They must be saved at all costs, because (to use a quote) "Names create a system that, standing out from the whole language with some specific features, is at the same time part of the tradition of law and customs of each society" (Tadeusz Milewski, 1969). This magnificent tradition of law and custom is equally present in all Slavic countries because of the common origin and common ethnic origin. The system of Slavic names should be proclaimed and disseminated so that it does not disappear and becomes more popular and even obligatory in all Slavic countries.

Threats

The reason for the disappearance of Slavic names is the process of acculturation. I will consider this problem from the point of view of Poland and the Pole. Now the most dangerous is the disaster called Americanization. I literally lose my temper when I'm on a train and I hear vacationers calling their children to order. There are names such as Angelica, Linda, Larry, Mark, Denis, Rob, Marks, Andy, Valentine... This is, of course, the result of an influx of low-brow American or German pop culture, especially empty films and TV programs. Until 1989, there were no such names in Poland at all, thanks to the clear actions of the censors and the Ministry of Culture and Art. From the names in Poland, one can also easily notice the influence of German culture and the age-old "Drang nach Osten". We already have millions of Roberts, Konrads, Karolis and Henryks. In fact, Christianity also came from Germany to Poland, and with it the Bible and numerous Hebraic names. Despite their Polishization, a significant number of Middle Eastern names indicate a level of decline in the tradition of Slavic culture and customs. Now it turns out that "typically Polish" are such names as Mateusz, Lukasz, Piotr, Rafał, Józef. Due to the fact that the pope is of Polish origin, the popularity of the Hebraic names Jan and Paul has crossed the border of absurdity. I urge at least in our circle - the circle of people who recognize themselves as SLAVES - to abandon these American, German or Hebrew names.

Names, initiation and Slavic culture

Before and immediately after the collapse of the Slavic Community, that is, before the Slavic tribes entered the orbit of influence of alien cultures, pagan tradition and customs did not allow members of the tribal community, and even more so the ruling elite, to deviate from the canon of the two-term name (600 - 1000 AD) . A child became a member of society (zadrugi, opol, tribe, state) when he passed under male guardianship at the age of 7 years. During the initiation ceremony, a new name was chosen, and the old name, given regardless of gender, under the influence of the feelings and impulse of the mother, was subject to oblivion. A new meaningful name had to correspond to the character of the child or the qualities that parents would like to see in him if the child had a weak character, for example:

Bogumil - may God be nice
Gosterad - let it be distinguished by hospitality,
Mstislav - may he be famous for revenge on his enemies.

Apparently, according to Slavic beliefs, the name was a spell and a magical sign associated with the person wearing it.

Thanks to the lexical components of binary names, preserved by customs and tradition, we learn a lot about the culture and value system of our ancestors. Here are examples from various areas of life:

Life (suffixes -life, -fat) - Vlastibyt, Zhiroslav, Domazhir.
Positive values (kindness, love, cute, joy) - Dobrogost, Lubomir, Radomir, Milostry.
Negative values (non-) - Niklot, Nemir, Nerad.
The meaning of knowledge (thought-, -thought, -view) - Myslibor, Gostevid, Bolemysl.
Social structure (hold-, gradient-, vladi-) - Derzhikray, Gradislav, Vladimir.
Hospitality (-guest) - Ljubogost, Dobrogost, Radogost.
Military organization (-regiment, howl-) - Svyatopolk, Vojislav.
Combat readiness (budi-, kresi-) - Budivoy, Kresislav.
Wrestling (bori-, rati-) - Borignev, Ratibor.
The virtues of a warrior (holy, fierce, pako-) - Svyatomir, Yaroslav, Pakoslav.
Honor, glory (honor-, glory) - Chtibor, Tomislav, Boleslav.
Family (brother-, -strong, sister-) - Bratomil, Zhelistry, Sestromil.
Ownership (semi-) - Sememysl, Semavit.
Faith (god-, -god) - Boguslav, Khvalibog, Molibog, Bogukhval.

These are examples of the presence of values, feelings, beliefs, a communal way of life, the organization of life in a war. It should be emphasized that in the system of Slavic names there are no names of animals (!), weapons and realities associated with the occupations of the population that appear in the system of names of other Indo-European languages. Slavic names are also more abstract than other Indo-European names.

Types of Slavic names in Poland

In Poland, as in other Slavic countries, there are three morphologically different types of names.

The first type is binomial names

Basic, ancient and most correct. They consist of two words that are in a certain syntactic and semantic relationship with each other. The characteristics of these names have been presented above. In Poland, during the Middle Ages, about six hundred names of this type were used. However, from the moment of the adoption of Christianity, they were gradually replaced by Judeo-Christian names coming from the West, and in the end, at the turn of the 15th-16th centuries, they were almost completely replaced. An exception to this rule was the Slavic binomial names that the saints of the Church bore, for example, Cheslav, Casimir, Stanislav, Vaclav, Vladislav, Wojciech. Also, binomial names remained in use longer in noble families, which is evidence of the use of binomial names by Slavic elites. The names of royal and princely dynasties on the territory of the entire Slavic world also serve as proof of this. In Poland, even rulers from dynasties that had nothing ethnically in common with the Slavs had Slavic binomial names: Jagiellons (for example, Vladislav Varnensky), Vases (for example, Vladislav IV Vasa).

In the 16th and 17th centuries we still meet Bronislav, Dadzibog, Dobrogost, Derzhislav, Yaroslav, Miroslav, Mstislav, Przemyslav, Przeclav, Vladimir, Zbigniew. In the 18th century in Poland, the use of Slavic binomial names continued to decline. The situation changed in the 19th century due to interest in Poland's past. Calendars of Slavic names begin to appear (for example, T. Voevudsky in the Warsaw Courier for 1827), although erroneous, distorted forms of Slavic names begin to appear along with them (for example, Zbigniew appeared instead of Zbygnev, and Zemovit appeared instead of Semovit) and hybrid forms - obtained from Christian names with the addition of a second Slavic member, for example: Jan - Yanislav, Julian - Yulislav. The resurrection of some old Slavic names was also facilitated by romantic literature, replete with Old Polish motifs with genuine Old Slavonic names.

In the interwar period, the popularity of Slavic binomial names continued to grow, thanks to the activities of neo-pagan groups who turned to the mythology of the Slavs and the ancient belief system. Slavic binomial names were also popularized thanks to the publication of calendars and books (for example, Vladislav Kolodzei "Slavic Calendar") and the habit of accepting pseudonyms in the form of a Slavic name. For example, the magazine "Zadruga" did not publish the full name of the author of the article - only the initials, if the author's name was not Slavic.

Now in Poland there are organizations that show interest in the Slavs and require their members to have a two-term Slavic name, which seems to me a very positive development (for example, some scout squads in Krakow, the Krakow branch of the society "Niklot", "Krak", "Lubush") .

What is the current scale of the use of Slavic names in Poland? Stanislavov - 800 thousand, Kazimirov - 300 thousand, Voitsekhov, Vladislavov, Cheslavov and Vladimirov - 200 thousand each, Bogdanov - 130 thousand. A fairly large number are also Bogumilov, Boguslavov, Boguhvalov, Svyatoslavov. These names are popular due to their connection with Christianity. Of the names that have little in common with Christianity, Zbigniew (400 thousand), Yaroslav, Miroslav, Wieslaw, Zdislav (200 thousand each), Przemyslav (130 thousand), Boleslav, Bronislav, Radoslav (80 thousand each) are popular.

From male names, female forms are formed, and their great similarity indicates the equality of women, for example: Stanislav (300 thousand), Casimir (145 thousand), Vladislav (140 thousand), Cheslava (100 thousand). Also popular are: Vaclav, Bronislava, Lyudmila, Dobroslav, Slavomir, Zbigniew, Zdislav.

The second type - forms of names derived from binomial names

Derived forms, broken or abbreviated, equipped with various suffixes, often diminutive), for example: Ratiborek - from Ratibor, Lut - Lutognev, Pelka - from Svyatopolk, Wojtek - from Wojciech, Gnevko - from Gnevomir, Milos - from Miroslav, Bronish - from Bronislav, Lekh - from Lekhoslav, Meshko - from Mechislav, Boris - from Borislav.

Personally, I think that the Slavs should get rid of names of this type as irregular forms, although from an ethnic point of view they are much more correct than names derived from Christianity and from Western pop culture.

The third type - simple names - folk names in the function of proper personal names

A good example of this type of name is the name Vuk, popular in Serbia, most likely derived from the name Vilchan known in the Middle Ages - the ruler of the Vileti with the meaning "let him be like a wolf, warlike, predatory, skilled warrior." Other names of this type: Kvyatek ("let it be like a flowering plant, beautiful and burly"), Odolan (from the verb "to overcome"), Shiban (from "to hit", that is, to beat), Kokhan, Milavan, Lasota.

Personally, I think that these names, although they are Slavic, correct and interesting, should not be promoted because of their one-memberedness, which does not give them a Slavic character.

Legal issues

My parents are Catholics, and therefore they gave me the name of the archangel Raphael - Rafal in the Polish sound. When I already realized that I was a real Slav, I decided to change my name to Old Slavonic through the rite of initiation. I chose the name Boromir, which means "let him fight the enemy for his world." It suits my surname and matches my character. Before I started using this name, it became my nickname because of the resemblance to my last name and the character from The Lord of the Rings Tolken, who then from England conquered the minds of young people in Poland. A few years later, I wanted to officially register a new name as a second. Imagine my surprise when my application was denied! In accordance with the law of the 50s, more than a dozen Slavic names listed by me earlier, as well as a large number of Herbrai, German and Latin names, were recognized as Polish. Thus, it turned out that, having a Hebraic name, I could not replace it with a Slavic one, since the official said that I invented it. But this name is present in the list of Serbian national names (Milica Cirkovic "Recnik licnich imena kod Srba"). This means that this name is purely Slavic, especially since it can be explained logically and grammatically. The aforementioned law allows the surname to be changed at the same time, so that thanks to the pro-German policy of the Polish state, the frequently occurring surname Wilk (Serbian Vuk) can be replaced by the more "normal" Wolf. We Poles have to deal with this legal problem ourselves, but I wonder how the legal issue of changing the name looks like in other Slavic states. For me, it was a relief to write a thesis on this topic and several articles in special journals, but this is more a legal trick than a principle that should oblige.

Ways to save binomial names

In order to preserve the existence of binary Slavic names as an ethno-cultural banner that distinguishes us from representatives of other language groups, an action to popularize these names in culture is necessary. For the sake of brevity, I will just list these methods:

Selection of literary and artistic pseudonyms in the form of binomial Slavic names, for example: writers Ludovit Stuhr, Zbigniew Nenatsky, Barnim Rogalitsa;

The introduction of a mandatory Slavic name in organizations of national and Slavic orientation;

The name of firms, shops, associations, streets with such names (for example, the Dobroslava sausage company, well-known in Poland);

Propaganda of the early Middle Ages through archaeological expeditions and historical meetings, because all the rulers in this period had Slavic names;

Giving the heroes of books, poems, films with binomial Slavic names;

Publication of calendars with a list of Slavic names, moreover, exceptionally correct ones.

In a word, we are talking about introducing Slavic names in every area of our activity: at the level of politics, economics, culture, and science. We should remember our children, who will soon be born. Let's think today about Slavic names for them! Unfortunately, today, due to legal requirements, we cannot afford to give a child a name at the age of 7. We must look for these names in the lists of Slavic names, historical sources, literature, as well as in the names of the places surrounding us, for example: Vladimir in Russia, Bratislava in Slovakia, Litomysl in the Czech Republic, Zlatibor in Serbia and Poland: Vodislav, Ratibuzh, Myslibuz, Przemysl, Yaroslav, Derzhislav, Wroclaw. You can also find them in the names in Bulgaria: Borimirov on behalf of Boromir and in Poland: Lutoslavsky on behalf of Lutoslav.

I count on the fact that at the next all-Slavic congresses a special commission will be created to collect and catalog binomial names found in all countries of the Slavic world in order to create an open bank of these names, available for the creation of Slavic calendars and publication in various countries.

Translation from Polish .

In ancient times, a person could be called any word or phrase that somehow characterizes him. Then many peoples have determined for themselves lists of names that people can wear. After the adoption of Christianity, the inhabitants of Rus' borrowed from the Byzantine Greeks not only religion, but also names. Meanwhile, even before the mass conversion to Orthodoxy, distant ancestors named their children in an original and imaginative way.

Classification of male names

The original Russian names, frankly, are not at all like those borrowed from the Greeks from Byzantium. Thinking about their meaning, one can understand how the ancestors perceived the world and their place in it.

So, most of the names of the representatives of the stronger sex are conditionally divided into the following groups:

reflecting the appearance of a man;

defining traits of his character;

associated with animals or plants;

expressing a profession or social status;

names "on the contrary";

ordinals;

indicating the time of the birth of the child;

explaining the attitude of parents to his birth;

names-ethnonyms;

common Slavic.

What were the boys called

Any external feature of a resident of Rus' could determine what people would call him. For example, depending on the color of the hair: Bel, Belyay, Belukha, Belous, Belyak. Or, on the contrary, Chernysh, Chernyak, Chernous, Chernukha, Chernyay. The names also indicated the features of the physique: Small, Mal, Malyuta, Long, Dry, Fat, Tolstoy, Golovach, Loban. Separate physical shortcomings also could not go unnoticed: Lame, Oblique, Fingerless, etc.

The name was also created by character traits, habits, and other features of a person. A smart boy could be called a Head, a too noisy one a Cry, an extremely silent one Molchan (Silent), a restless one Bulgak, an honest one Pravda. These names also include: Strength, Lefty, Verb (chatty), Gladilo (affectionate), Gordey, etc.

Fauna and flora were an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the pagan ancestors when choosing names. Any tree, grass, bird, fish or mammal that was the object of a totem cult could be used to give the child the appropriate features. It was believed that the Oak would grow up strong and powerful, the Raven - wise, the Bull - stubborn, the Wolf - independent and brave.

The boy could be called Cat, Stallion, Boar, Wheatgrass, Sorrel (sorrel), Tsvetan, Toptyga (bear), Catfish, Sparrow, etc. The options are huge.

Occupation and social status in ancient Russian society were usually inherited. Therefore, the names of professions or estates could serve as a name for people: Blacksmith, Barryshnik, Merchant, Soldier, Sagittarius. Sometimes the name reflected the direct occupation of the person. If he makes fur products - a fur coat, makes kitchen utensils - a spoon, forges weapons and other metal products - a sword or an ax.

As for the names Skorobogat, Prince or Tsarevich, they could be given as a wish in the future to gain material wealth or a high position in society.

Names "from the contrary"

A special group is made up of names that reflect negative features or character traits, as well as frankly bad circumstances. They were given to boys "from the contrary" in order to protect them from the influence of evil spirits in the future.

It was believed that Hunger would always be full, Goryain - happy, Nekras - outwardly attractive, Nemil - pleasing to people, and Strakhon would grow up brave. In the same way, people hoped for the generosity of Zhadena (Zhadin) and the luck of Neustroy.

The roots of such names go back to ancient times, when any word had a magical meaning for people. Ancestors believed that it was possible to gain power over a person's life, just by knowing his name.

Usually the child was given two names. The negative was reported to everyone in order to protect the baby from the evil eye and damage, and the positive (real) was hidden from strangers. It was used only by the closest people.

Circumstances of birth

The name often depended on the circumstances of the birth of the child. So, the First was the firstborn of his parents. Vtorak, Tretyak or Shestak were named depending on the order of birth.

The desired child could be named: Bazhen, Bogdan, Zhdan, Chayan or Khoten. And if his mother's pregnancy was not planned, then they said so: Nezhdan, Nechay. The adopted baby often received the name Found.

Frost, Zimnik, Letnik, Veshnyak, Leaf fall - depending on the season when a person came to this world.

A child born from a mixed marriage could be named: Litvin, Chudin (Finno-Ugric tribe), Tatar, Karel, Kazarin (Khazar), Turchak.

Slavic names, consisting of two roots, were also in use among the inhabitants of Rus'. For example, Blagovest, Valigor, Svyatogor, Radosvet, Tatomir, Radomir, Yaroslav and even Zhiroslav.

In the pre-Christian period, along with the Rurik dynasty, names of Scandinavian origin came to Rus': Ingvar, Igor, Gleb, Oleg and others.

Until the 19th century, many peasants had two names: Church Slavonic (according to the calendar) and secular, often kept secret to avoid accusations of paganism. It is interesting that Russian names could be formed both from nouns (Cutter), and from adjectives (Ryzhoy), from numerals (Semak) and even from verbs (Smeshilo).

What were the girls called

The inhabitants of Ancient Rus' had beautiful, harmonious or original, remarkable names. Many of them reflected the appearance of the fair sex or their character traits: Lybid (smiling) or Neulyba, Golub, Fun, Lyubava, Chernyava, Belyan, Svetla, Nesmeyana or Smeyana, Krasava, Razumnitsa, Dobrava, Miliana, Joy, Delight, Mlada, Diva, Rusana and others.

The virtues of girls, girls and women were also emphasized by Slavic names, consisting of two roots. For example, Lyubomila, Radoslava, Ladoslava, Lyubomudra, Milonega, Domoslava, Radmila, Dobrodeya, Ognevlad, Svetozar and Jaromil.

As for the names "from the contrary", then the inhabitants of Ancient Rus' sometimes gave them to their daughters. Of course, with the best intentions, to protect from the forces of evil. And yet, it’s pretty surprising that parents could name their girl: Flea, Nits, Need, Fear, Tuzhilka (to grieve), Resentment, Anger or Dislike.

Another large group consists of names formed from the names of animals and plants: Birch, Rowan, Grass, Colors, Berry, Rue, Fox, Pike, Crow, Magpie, Cat, etc.

Depending on the time of birth, the girl could be called: Snezhana, Zima, Vesnyanka. And it depended on the circumstances of her birth whether she would be called: Bogdana, Nezhdan or Zhdana, Vtora or Pervush.

It is noteworthy that the names associated with professions and social status are almost never found among women. In Ancient Rus', the circumstances of the life of the fair sex were completely dependent on the position in society of their spouses. But there are many names that emphasize the external attractiveness of girls, which is what the ancestors considered the most important for them.

Slavic Vedic names. The name is an expression, the purpose of the soul in Reveal

As the ancient Latins said - "nomen est omen". The name is a sign.

“Whatever you call a yacht, so it will float” ...

Unlike foreign names, our names carry a deep meaning, understandable to every Slav. For example, who can say offhand what the name "Paul" means? And "Kreslav"? “Kresalo”, “kres” (fire) are immediately remembered; fire worshiper.

Distinguishing a Slavic name from a foreign one is very simple: you need to think about whether there are parts of this name in any native word? The Slavs almost did not use the letter A at the beginning of the word, but tried to replace it with other letters I, O, I, and so on.

Personal names starting with this letter, for the most part, are not Slavic, but of foreign origin. Unlike foreign names, our names carry a deep meaning, understandable to every Slav. In Vedic culture, naming is directly related to the evolutionary level of human development. If the khvarna (varna, Zharye body) of a born child corresponds to a clergyman (sorcerer, sorcerer, witch - knowing mother; varna of a brahmana), then his name consists of two roots. And one of the roots is usually “glory” (i.e. glorifying) or “loving” (loving).

For example, "Boguslav" - glorifying God, "Dobroslav" - glorifying goodness; “Lyubomir” is a loving world, “Lybomysl” is a person who loves to think, etc.

The two-root name indicates that this person is twice-born - in the body and in the spirit (acquired Zharye's body).

If Zharye's body corresponds to a warrior-knight (varna kshatriya), then the child is also given a two-root name, which usually has the roots "peace", "vlad".

For example, "Branimir" - fighting for peace, "Tvorimir" - creating peace-harmony; "Vladduh" - owning the spiritual body, "Vladimir" - owning the world.

If Zharya's body corresponds to the weight (orachi-peasants, varna vaishyas), then the name has only one root, and if smerdu (shudra), then a simple nickname is given.

Names are domestic, communal, spiritual, secret, deceptive. In the modern name book, out of 150 names, only 15 are actually Slavic, the rest are of a different origin (For example, Sergey is a Roman generic name with the meaning “clear, highly esteemed”; Fedor is Greek: “gift of God”).

The Slavs also had nicknames that complemented the name. Here is one of them: Mazai - the one who smears; or the anointed one himself. Crane - a faithful wife, homely, happiness in the house. Fool, Durash, Durov, Fools - Skt. dur - "door"; dur-anta - "infinity". This name and nickname are mysterious, they are rooted in the infinity and chaos of the primordial world (and the world of the most ancient ancestors), therefore they are characterized by both positive, negative, and deceptive meaning (unrecognized, for example, "fool"). It is this meaning in the names Fool, Ivan the Fool, Ivanushka the Fool in Russian folk tales. A fool who has a connection (door) with the other world of ancestors and first ancestors (“grandchildren of Dazhbog”), with the Gods, with the infinity of the cosmos, who understands the language of animals, herbs, elements, is not stupid at all. (Durnik) a pupil of the Luchansk prince Vladislav; ... "

The name determines the fate of a person. This is the key to his inner self. After all, it was not without reason that in Rus' a person had two names, one - false, for everyone, and the other - secret, only for the person himself and his very close people.
