Description of the painting "Golden Autumn" by I. Levitan

Artist: Isaac Ilyich Levitan
Name of the painting: "Golden Autumn"
Picture painted: 1895
Canvas, oil.
Size: 82×126 cm

This autumn landscape is unusually bright and optimistic, despite the fact that most of Levitan's paintings are dominated by the color scheme of sadness - mixed muted tones. In total, the artist has about a hundred autumn landscapes. Their usual theme is the solemnly sad withering of the autumns of Russian nature. However, there is no sadness in this picture! The canvas depicts a deep forest river of saturated blue color and white-trunked birch trees reflecting the golden sunlight in autumn decoration ...

Some facts from the artist's life

Levitan created the painting in 1895. On the canvas, the artist depicted nature in the vicinity of the Syezha River, which flows near the village of Ostrovno.

In the mid-1890s, the artist lived with his beloved S. Kuvshinnikova in one of the provincial estates. Unexpectedly, he became interested in A. Turchaninova, who was vacationing at a neighbor's dacha. A stormy romance began between them. During this period, the artist created several paintings that were in tune with his elevated state of mind.

It is known that Levitan often visited Chekhov's house. Anton Pavlovich did not welcome his friend's love interests. He was not pleased with the unexpected appearance of "bravura" in Levitan's last paintings. For example, "Golden Autumn" was too different from the elegiac-sad states of autumn nature, which the artist usually portrayed.

This picture turned out unusually bright. It feels a special excitement and anticipation of happiness, which did not fit with the usual attitude of the painter. It is known that the author himself was not completely satisfied with his work. A year later, he painted another canvas with the same name in a more familiar manner.

However, according to many connoisseurs of the artist's work, it was the elevated major experiences that were not characteristic of Levitan that made the painting "Golden Autumn" in 1895 a true masterpiece of landscape painting.

Description and analysis

In the foreground of the painting “Golden Autumn” there is a birch grove spread out on both sides of a narrow deep river, the steep banks of which are overgrown with grass and shrubs. Through them, in some places, patches of reddish-brown earth are visible.

Above the slope are beautiful white-trunked birch trees, sparkling with gold in the rays of the cool autumn sun.

There is a feeling that yellow and red gold is poured into the very air. Several scarlet aspens bring additional saturation to the overall color scheme of the picture. The sun itself is not visible on the canvas, but the viewer feels that its rays seem to play on the surface of the entire canvas.

Light golden crowns of trees create a joyful life-affirming mood in the picture. Nature on the canvas not only does not fade, but, on the contrary, rejoices in the coming autumn! The work is dominated by three colors - gold, blue and cyan with a slight addition of green. This color scheme symbolizes the joy and fullness of life.

The picture clearly shows Levitan's special care as a painter. "Golden Autumn" is not a monotonous landscape. In yellowness, which is most often found on this canvas, the artist notices and reflects a huge number of color shades. At the same time, he draws attention to other colors.

On the right bank of the river, the master depicted greenish-gray trees, as if faded in the sun and washed out by frequent autumn rains. In the background, you can see a small village with peasant huts. Behind them are fields, and a lemon-ocher forest stretches along the horizon.

The main mood of the painting "Golden Autumn" is a real celebration of being, a feeling of delight in front of the short-lived and fragile charm of the surrounding nature. The beauty of the painting canvas attracts, delights and ennobles at the same time. The nature depicted in the picture is majestic, beautiful and at the same time defenseless. She demands careful attention to herself.

According to art critics, Levitan, unlike many artists, was able not only to write beautifully and correctly, but also to enjoy this process. Therefore, all his paintings are unique phenomena of a picturesque nature, which are difficult to write about, but which are so easy to admire, surrendering to their inexplicable charm.

Researchers of the artist's work claim that in his legacy there are about a hundred paintings on the theme of autumn. One of the most beloved by the viewer among them is considered to be "Golden Autumn". The magnificent autumn landscape became evidence of the hidden vitality, which, in spite of everything, was inherent in a brilliant artist who suffered from painful bouts of melancholy.

On a small canvas, Levitan created a surprisingly bright and life-affirming landscape. Autumn is depicted in major saturated colors, which are very rare on the canvases of the artist, who usually preferred softer pastel colors and delicate color schemes.

However, apparently, the splendor of autumn nature touched the painter so much that he decided to deviate from his usual creative manner.

The canvas “Golden Autumn” seems to breathe with transparent bliss. The birch trees depicted in the foreground are reverently pure and innocent. Bold energetic strokes of paint, which, according to art critics, have become the harbingers of impressionism, lie on the canvas easily and freely, enlivening the autumn grove with a play of light and a feeling of a light breeze.

Many painters try to convey the farewell beauty of the autumn season and the “magnificent withering of nature” in their paintings. However, it is Levitan who is characterized by light sadness and unusually subtle lyricism. These unique qualities illuminate his paintings with the special power of some kind of mystical feeling.

According to the famous artist A. Benois, Levitan knew how to feel in nature that which praised the Creator, heard the beating of her heart. Revealing the innermost secrets of nature, its deepest spiritual content was the constant aspiration of the artist throughout his short creative life.

I. Teacher's story about the artist and his painting

Isaac Ilyich Levitan (1860-1900) was an outstanding landscape painter of the late 19th century.
His fate was not easy: coming from a poor Jewish family, he learned humiliation and poverty from an early age. Art became the vocation of I.I. Levitan literally from childhood. Already at the age of thirteen he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His teachers were V.G. Perov, A.K. Savrasov, V.D. Polenov.
A.K. Savrasov, he learned to see the poetry and beauty of Russian nature. V.D. Polenov had a great influence on I. Levitan as a colorist, which was especially evident in pure, sonorous colors, in a lively, direct sense of nature in such paintings by the artist as “First Greenery”, “Birch Grove”.
The painting "Golden Autumn" (1895) creates an image of a solemn, joyful autumn in its tranquility, glorifying native nature. This picture could rightly be called “an encyclopedia of Russian autumn.

II. Conversation on the painting by I.I. Levitan "Golden Autumn"

Autumn in the paintings of Levitan is very diverse. It is impossible to list all the autumn days he painted on the canvas. Levitan left about a hundred "autumn" paintings, not counting sketches. They depicted things familiar from childhood: lonely golden birches, not yet upholstered in the wind; a sky like thin ice; shaggy rains over forest clearings.
But in all these landscapes, no matter what they depict, the sadness of farewell days, falling leaves, rotting grasses, the quiet hum of bees before the cold weather and the pre-winter sun, barely noticeably warming the earth, are best conveyed ...

What is shown in the picture?

What feelings did the artist want to express?

Why is the painting called "Golden Autumn"?

What colors (tones) did the artist choose to show the "gold of autumn"?

What would you like to write about in an essay on this picture? What will you describe?

III. whiteboard writing

Students are encouraged to write down words that they can rely on when working on an essay.
Sky, river, field, birches, grove, trees, village, hillock, grass.
All these words are supporting, they are objects for description, what is already given to us by the picture. And what can we say "new" about this "given"?

On the board - write:

New:

sky

blue, bright, clean, sunny, with white clouds.

river

not wide, clean, calm, deep, quiet, with a slow flow.

trees

yellow, golden, colorful, like candles, beautiful.

grass

dry, yellow as a carpet, brown.

field

green, fresh, like a velvet soft carpet.

small village

small, distant

IV. Conversation with students on the content of the picture

How would you start an essay on a painting?

From the fact that the artist I.I. Levitan depicted a beautiful time - autumn.

What would you write after the introduction?

I would describe in detail the trees, the river, the sky...
What would be the last sentence of your essay?

I would definitely write (a) about what a beautiful time of the year autumn is, how the artist beautifully portrayed it. I really liked this picture...

And now look how the author of the book "Conversations about Art" V. B. Rosenwasser described this picture. But the whole trouble is that I got only separate sheets with printed text, and now I don’t know if this text is one or different, which sheet is the first and which is the last.
Let's try to figure this out together. Read passages. (Students are given printed sheets with text).

« “Peering into the picture of I.I. Levitan, we, as it were, together with the artist, experience that boundless beauty of our native land, autumn nature, which has always attracted the greatest masters of Russian landscape painting.”

Does the content of the text match the picture? Are the passages one text?

Yes, they are, because all of them talk about the painting by I.I. Levitan “Golden Autumn”.

Indeed, all the passages are linked by one thought. Which?
The main idea of this text is the idea of the beauty of Russian autumn nature.

Right. You proved that all the passages are one text, they are united by one thought. How would you arrange these passages? Which one will be first, (second, third)?

1. At the beginning of the text, I would put (a) an excerpt "Simple and familiar ...". This passage describes the picture in full, in general.
2. Behind the first passage, I would put (a) a detailed description of the landscape and how the picture is written. This part is the longest and explains what the first passage says...
3. The passage “Peering into the picture ...” I would put (a) last, because it talks about the beauty of nature, as if it draws a conclusion from everything that has been said before.

So, we have restored the text with you completely. Please note that each passage begins with a red line. Why? How do you think?
Probably because each passage describes the picture differently. Each of them seems to have its own idea. For example, in the first passage we immediately see the picture. And in the second, we seem to be looking at the landscape together with the author of the text and slowly move our eyes across the picture.

Right. Sentences united by one thought (subtopic) and having clear boundaries form paragraphs. Are the paragraphs related? If related, how?

Yes, the paragraphs are linked. In the first paragraph, the author talks about the river. And he begins the second paragraph by describing what is to the left and to the right of the river. In the second paragraph, the words “look”, “take a closer look” are often repeated, and in the third paragraph the conclusion is made: “... peering into the picture of I. I. Levitan ...”.

You correctly noticed that here the paragraphs are interconnected by single-root words. There are other types of communication, but we will learn about this later.

Did you like the text?

I really liked the text. The author described in detail the painting "Golden Autumn". After reading this text, I better understood the picture of I.I. Levitan.

What new about the painting by I.I. Levitan did you learn from the text?

I learned how the artist painted the picture, how he applied paint to show the movement of water and better depict the golden foliage of birches. -How does the author describe the river, trees, field, sky? What words does he use? Complete the supporting words that we wrote down earlier with new ones from the text.

V. Vocabulary and stylistic work
- Use a dictionary to explain the meaning of the following art terms:
Painting is a type of fine art that reproduces objects and phenomena with the help of paints.
Scenery - picture depicting nature.
smears - technique of painting with oil paints. The smear is placed once. They can overlap in different directions. There are light and thick strokes.
coloring - the ratio of colors in the picture by tone.

Form landscape, word painting, nouns denoting a person from nouns.
(Landscape painter, painter).

Find in the text complex adjectives denoting shades of color. Explain their meaning with a picture.
(Emerald-green winter stripe, deep blue water, crimson-gold birches, red-bronze oaks).
-What artistic means should be used to make your description as colorful, expressive, accurate? Let's try to collect a verbal "palette" for the painting by I. Levitan.

Homework: write an essay based on the painting by I.I. Levitan “Golden Autumn”.

Application.

Levitan's autumn landscape seems simple and familiar to us. The artist depicted a narrow river, calmly carrying its waters between low banks. “On the left we see a birch grove, on the right – individual trees. Our gaze moves, as it were, following the course of the river, autumn forests open up in the distance, and in the gap between them, on a high hill behind the emerald-green winter stripe, is a village. The sky is blue, clear, covered with light white clouds. Before us is a river, and it seems that its deep blue water is slowly moving. Take a closer look at how the artist painted that part of the water that is closer to us. He laid strokes of paint not along the movement of water, but vertically, and the water seemed to rear up and rise. And only further, becoming lighter, she began to slowly move. We find the same technique for constructing space in the image of the coast on the left. The ground is spread out before us, covered with already browned autumn grass. Crimson-gold birches on the left and red-bronze oaks on the right seem to part, revealing to the eye the endless expanses of fields and forests. See how densely the artist applied paint where the golden foliage of birches is depicted in the foreground, how grass and water are painted. But the further into the depths of the landscape, the less dense and lighter the strokes become.

Levitan, we, together with the artist, are experiencing that boundless beauty of our native land, autumn nature, which has always attracted the greatest masters of Russian landscape painting.

The beauty of Russian nature has always attracted the attention of poets, writers, composers and artists. Therefore, many masters of the pictorial brush turned to this topic. One of these unsurpassed masters of painting is I.I. Levitan. In his paintings, love and admiration for native nature is clearly and clearly traced.

One of his paintings is called "Golden Autumn". This landscape reproduction was created by a remarkable artist in 1895 and, despite the fact that so much time has passed, it still evokes feelings of admiration for the masterpiece created by Levitan. After all, its autumn landscape is bright and sunny. He can't leave anyone indifferent.

Therefore, I. Levitan can rightly be called an artist of mood, as his contemporaries often called him. He could skillfully convey the beauty of his native land, show it in such a way that it would be impossible not to fall in love with it. Penetrating into the heart of everyone, he teaches not only to see the beautiful, but also shows how to appreciate it.

This painting by Levitan made such a huge impression on I. Tretyakov, who immediately acquired it for her art collection. In the modern world of art, this picture can be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery. In it, she is considered a real asset.

Levitan's painting "Golden Autumn" depicts an autumn birch grove, which is changeable and unique in its attire. The foreground of the picture attracts attention, where two small aspens are comfortably located, on which almost all the leaves have already fallen off. And here are the birch trees, which flicker with their golden peaks. In the picture, they are located a little aside from the main landscape. But all attention, of course, is drawn to the wonderful birch grove, which surprises with its unusual golden decoration.

The birch trunks are snow-white, and the trees themselves are depicted as if they are dressed in bright outfits that have an unusual yellow-orange hue. If you look closely at the picture, you will notice that the birch leaves are depicted by the artist as if they were fluttering in the wind. Illuminated by the rays of the sun, they shimmer brightly and shine. This is how the image of golden jewelry on girls trees is created.

One of these beautiful birches stands on the right bank of the river, far from her girlfriends. That's why she seems so alone. But the river water is still and cold. The artist placed the river in his picture on the right so that the birch grove could be reflected in the mirror surface. But what else is reflected in the river? This is the sky, huge, bright, blue, on which huge white clouds float.

Reflected in the mirror-clear river water are the branches of the shrub that has grown on the banks of the river and now shimmers with reddish colors and shades under the rays of the sun. But it was this delicate and amazing bush that allowed the artist to steal and diversify the left bank of the river.

The calm and peaceful surface of the river allowed the artist Levitan to complete the landscape, which he was able to convey so accurately and so surprisingly. The author of the artistic canvas was able to show all the beauty and charm of the autumn landscape with several colors. To the right of the water are beautiful willows, branches that have fallen low to the river. They have not yet lost their former beauty, and now, despite the fact that everything is golden, they still stand, as before, green. They create a charming contrast between autumn, which has already arrived, and summer, which has already passed.

But summer leaves and says goodbye, and autumn only conquers new territories more strongly. There is an invisible battle between the seasons and this, of course, is reflected in nature, which is transformed and changes its outfit. Levitan shows how autumn gradually triumphs over summer: the greenery has become not so bright and saturated, it is no longer juicy, and is very different from the state in which it was quite recently, in the summer.

The whole earth is covered with grass, but it also obeyed autumn and turned yellow. But still, in some places, a green grass strand still flickers, like a small mention of summer. And now new elements are woven into this wonderful and unusual grass carpet - fallen leaves, which are crimson and yellow. The artist chose saturated and bright colors for the image of the grass, and in some places on the grass you can see dark spots that appeared like a shadow from the trees.

It is worth paying attention to the background of Levitan's painting. Here you can see not only forests and fields that were sown with winter crops, but distant and almost invisible houses. The fields seem as if spring has come, as greenery is visible everywhere, juicy and rich. But then the artist makes a sharp contrast and switches to yellow and brown colors, which bring back to reality and show that after all, autumn has already come in nature.

An interesting and charming picture of the famous and magnificent artist I.I. Levitan creates a wonderful lyrical mood. The colors of the canvas "Golden Autumn" pleases with its unusually bright shades, which make autumn nature so happy. It is this picturesque landscape that helps the magic brush of the master of painting to awaken sincere love for his native land. And how amazing and beautiful this picture is! From the beauty of nature, depicted by Levitan, it is impossible to take your eyes off.

It is simply amazing how nature could create such a miracle, and now it delights everyone, makes us be more attentive to what surrounds us. It is Levitan who, with his painting, shows that it is worth paying attention not only to the general landscape, but also to consider small details and details that just help to create a special and even poetic mood.

Therefore, autumn helped, and sometimes even awakened in the hearts of many poets and writers the desire to create. Among them are such famous and great people as Mikhail Prishvin, Alexander Pushkin, Konstantin Paustovsky and others. All of them have wonderful works dedicated to the autumn season and its natural and unusual beauty, which is impossible not to fall in love with.

The painting "Golden Autumn" urges people not to pass by the beautiful, to pay attention to nature, to see its fabulous and unearthly beauty. The artist calls on people to protect the most valuable thing that was created by nature and what needs to be preserved for new future generations.

Golden Autumn - Isaac Ilyich Levitan. 1895. Oil on canvas. 82 x 126 cm.

Bright, ocher color, interspersed with red and orange, pouring from the canvas, is so eloquent that even without looking at the signature on the frame, one can easily guess that we have “Golden Autumn” by Isaac Levitan.

The painting was first presented at the 24th exhibition, and was preceded by meticulous work. First, sketches from nature were created - in the fall of 1895, the author lived in the Gorka estate of the Tver province, where he looked for plots, and was already completed in.

Immediately attracts the attention of the mood of the work. The painter suddenly moved from elegiac, very subtle and soulful works to a lush, bright, solemn landscape. As usual, all significant events in the life of the creator will certainly find their response in his works, and Levitan was no exception - his personal life was seething and full of passions while writing Golden Autumn.

Being in a close relationship with Sofia Kuvshinnikova, Levitan fell in love with Anna Turchaninova. She was vacationing at a nearby estate. A stormy romance developed, reminiscent of downright bookish passions. Kuvshinnikova tried to commit suicide (thank God, the eccentric person did not succeed), Anton Chekhov openly condemned her friend's passionate hobbies, and his sister Maria (with whom the painter was also unrequitedly in love at one time), and Levitan himself lived in anticipation of happiness. Chekhov also spoke negatively about the artist's works created during this exciting period, scolding him for being too "bravura" and decorative. The same comments applied to "Golden Autumn" - where did the subtle lyricist, the sensitive artist who paints soulful quiet landscapes go?

Today, art historians attribute the presented painting by Levitan to the so-called major series, which, in addition to Golden Autumn, includes works, etc. And ordinary viewers like it for its emotionality, expressiveness and bright solemn colors.

While writing sketches in Gorka, all conditions were created for the master - on the shore of the lake in the estate, a workshop was built especially for Levitan, as much as two floors. The landscape depicted in the picture was only half a kilometer from his personal workshop - this is the Syezha River near the town of Ostrovno.

A narrow river with fairly high steep banks originates from the lower right corner of the canvas to take the viewer's gaze straight to the horizon, through the autumn forest to barely visible fields and village houses. The sky is reflected in the dark, calm waters, but at the same time it is not calm and light like in autumn (an uncharacteristic element for Levitan).

The point of view is chosen very well, as it allows you to build a wide panoramic composition with many elements. If we analyze the picture in detail, it can be noted that the details on the canvas are distributed unevenly - the left side is more loaded, however, this does not lead to asymmetric sensations, since Levitan competently “arranged” and grouped all the elements of the landscape.

As already noted, the chosen palette in this picture is not characteristic of the painter - the colors are too bright and saturated, but moving deeper into the picture, you can see how the color becomes more calm and familiar.

Not everyone shared Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's skepticism about this work. In general, the picture received a lot of the most positive and admiring reviews. There was a splendor of the landscape, emotional fullness, golden brilliance. Also, art critics are very fond of considering this work, as an example of the influence of European impressionism on Levitan's work.

A year after it was written, Golden Autumn was bought by Pavel Tretyakov directly from a traveling exhibition. The new owner suddenly had problems with the execution of the transaction, and the painting wandered around the exhibitions of the Wanderers for a long time, waiting for Pavel Mikhailovich to pick it up. But in November of the same year, exhibiting in Kharkov, she suffered a misfortune - the heavy copper visor of the air heater, falling from the wall, pierced the canvas through and through. Restoration work was hastily carried out, and through the efforts of the restorer Dmitry Artsybashev, the painting again acquired its original appearance. Although Levitan himself was very worried about whether the promised deal would take place, in connection with this sad incident, Tretyakov did not refuse Golden Autumn and immediately after the purchase donated it to his gallery, where the picture is to this day.

"Gold autumn"- a landscape by the Russian artist Isaac Levitan (1860-1900), painted in 1895. Belongs to the State Tretyakov Gallery. The size of the painting is 82 × 126 cm.

This picture "amazes and captures with the fullness and beauty of its emotional content, so definitely expressed in color splendor, in the major sound of a golden colorful scale."

Everyone experiences autumn in their own way. When I look at Levitan's painting Golden Autumn, I am overcome with a feeling of admiration. From the picture breathes autumn coolness. In the foreground of the picture is a deep blue river. In the distance, she turns, and at the turn stands a lonely golden birch. On the left side of the picture is a birch grove. Looking at her, you understand that autumn has come. All leaves are bright yellow. Only a small bush blushes among the birches. Not all the trees in the picture are golden, but the golden decoration of autumn catches the eye. In the background is a small village. The houses are barely visible in the distance, but the green winter wheat stands out against the yellow background. The sky is soft blue, with a white airy cloud on it.
