Theater "Modern" under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Svetlana Vragova (formerly the Theater on Spartakovskaya Square) has been on the cultural map of the capital for 15 years. The theater was formed in 1988 on the basis of the graduation course of the Shchepkinsky Theater School (this was the last course led by the People's Artist of the USSR M.I. Tsarev), under the name of the Studio Theater on Spartakovskaya Square. Already the first performance of "Dear Elena Sergeevna" by Lyudmila Razumovskaya glorified the young troupe, which subsequently made a triumphal tour throughout Yugoslavia with this production (the Perestroika in the USSR festival, 1989), and then toured the United States for several months (Los Angeles - Chicago, 1990). It was one of the first professional studio theaters that could not only prove their viability, but also declare their own creative credo. The performance "Dear Elena Sergeevna" became a hit for several seasons. Bright avant-garde performances "Rasplyuev's Happy Days" by Sukhovo-Kobylin, "Video. Boxing. Bullet" by E. Kozlovsky received prizes at prestigious competitions more than once. The performances "Let's Laugh!" and "...Looking for a meeting!" gained such success with the public that they remained in the repertoire for many years.
Since 1993, the Theater on Spartakovskaya has become the "Modern" theater and begins to develop the problems of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, associated with such an exceptional phenomenon in culture as the "modern" style. Svetlana Vragova's play "Katerina Ivanovna", staged in 1995, became a turning point for the theatre. He represented Russia at the jubilee Belgrade Theater Festival, where he was called by critics as a performance that forges new paths in art.
Theater "Modern" lovingly arranges its aesthetic space. It envelops those who have already come from the threshold, "calms down with the simplicity and completeness of the stairs, the modesty of the chandeliers and quickly turns us to the stained glass window leading to the Looking Glass, Stained Glass is a preface to action.
It represents the aristocratic beginning of the style, while the flights of stairs and its landings are its business incarnation. The theater, having changed the name of the theater-studio on Spartakovskaya Square to "Modern", can be said to have brought it into line with the building in which it is located - a mansion erected in the Russian modern style of the early 20th century. There are many such houses in Moscow, but this one has something exceptional in itself: in the midst of a district that is just beginning to revive, there is this fragment of a different, as it were, irrational world, a witness to Russia's pre-revolutionary past.
The full name - Theater "Modern" - clearly resonates not only with past times, but also with today's day. In theatrical art, director Svetlana Vragova was one of the first to understand this. The theater carefully probed the boundary between the end of the century and the next century, which in Russian art received the poetic name of the "Silver Age". Modern in the understanding of S.A. Vragovoy is an avant-garde with serious cultural traditions, a connection between modernity and classics.
Theater "Modern" exists according to these laws: relying on a serious psychological analysis, assimilating Russian traditions and modernity in order to search for new forms.

What are your signs of September?

Undoubtedly, one of them is the opening of the theatrical season.

I will say right away that this is a new point for me in the sky of Moscow theaters, but the beautiful name Modern and the name of the artistic director, Yuri Grymov, promised something interesting and unusual.

So, are you ready to get acquainted with the theater and its creative plans for the season?

The theater fascinates even from the entrance: with its magnificent design (oh, this beloved modernist style), friendly and attentive staff, cozy areas for relaxation and conversations ... at the same time, you immediately feel that the theater is modern, life is in full swing in it, I see this in repertoire and in a very interesting and professional design of posters, in the burning interested eyes of the met actors, in the coherence of the work of the entire team.

At the gathering of the troupe, artistic director Yuri Grymov and director Alexei Cherepnev spoke about the plans and successes of the theater.

I think a simple figure will tell you about success best of all: ticket sales have grown by 5❗️❗️❗️ times over the year! And this is despite the highest competition of theaters in Moscow. To attract and interest a sophisticated viewer who has the opportunity to choose is not an easy task, but the theater successfully copes with it.

The creative plans of the theater include tours, premieres and creative projects. So, in November, the premiere of the play "NOTHING, that I'm CHEKHOV?", directed by Yuri Grymov, will take place. The characters of this action will be Stanislavsky, Marilyn Monroe, Adolf Hitler, Beria... interesting? I really!

Work continues in the theater on a play based on Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace". By the way, now you can buy tickets for it for 50% of the cost, as the theater has launched crowdfunding to raise funds for the production of this performance.

In the same theatrical season, the theater will host the Russian premiere of Yury Grymov's full-length film "Anna Karenina. An Intimate Diary." In the future, film screenings followed by audience meetings with actors, critics and directors are planned to be made permanent.

It is felt that living blood boils in the theater, that this is a place where ideas are born and embodied, where it is interesting for both actors and spectators.

Very soon I will tell you about the performances of this theater - I can't wait to see them.

❗️in the meantime, tell me❗️❗️do you like the idea of introducing a dress code in the theater? Theater "Modern" decided on this measure. The rules are not strict: a ban on shorts, T-shirts and sportswear. And I think it's great. ❗️And at the performances, they will choose the most stylish COUPLE, and give them a subscription to the theater. How do you like the idea?

Interested you? See you at the theatre?

The Council of Artistic Directors of Moscow theaters supported the candidacy of film director Yuri Grymov, nominated for the post of artistic director of the Modern Theater. The Izvestia correspondent met with the new theater director.

- For many, it was a surprise that you, a film director, decided to head the theater ...

It was a conscious choice, I knew what I was doing. I have an old love for the theatre. And over the years, it only gets worse. “Flowers for Algernon”, my production at RAMT, has been sold out for the fourth year. Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride, which I staged in 2005, has been performed at the Novaya Opera for more than 10 years.

I personally do not like what has been happening in the domestic cinema in the last decade. If the Russian theater has preserved the traditions of continuity and the state policy towards the theater is quite wise, then this is practically not the case in Russian cinema. There, films that are similar in aesthetics to American ones have relative success. I'm not interested, because I love Soviet cinema.

- At the artistic council you presented the theater development program. What is it?

We have a lot of hard work ahead of us. There are 12 plays that I would be interested in directing. The very name of the theater - "Modern" - says that this is modernity. And then the art style. It is important to bring the concept of "modernity" into the theater. Let our site serve as a springboard for the debut works of young and talented people.

For me, in general, a team of bright personalities is fundamental. This applies to both the actors and the staged part. In the cinema, they have recently stopped looking for bright unexpected people. I would like to eliminate this omission in the theater so that young people have the opportunity to express themselves. But, of course, I will put something myself.

- Have you already met with the Moderna troupe?

No, I have plans to do it after the New Year. It just all happened unexpectedly. Of course, the appointment of me to such a position is pleasant and responsible. Many thanks to the Union of Artistic Directors, Chairman of the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation Alexander Kalyagin for the trust. I'll try to justify it.

- Often, the arrival of a new artistic director is accompanied by scandals. Aren't you afraid that the actors will meet you with hostility?

I am a non-confrontational person. For me, dialogue is the key to everything. I would like to be heard. We must not forget that the theater is a large number of people. We must become a team and move towards creation.

- How do you imagine your theater?

This is a theater of living emotions. There should be laughter and tears in the hall. I think that it is necessary to cry in the theater, and not in life. When people cry at your performance, it is a great happiness. Fortunately, today a person goes to the theater to look at his own kind. Other people are already coming to the cinema - chewing, making phone calls. So in that regard, I'm a big fan of the theatre.

Today I see many good performances at the Vakhtangov Theatre, the Yermolova Theatre, Et. Cetera and others. And you know, I am proud that I had a warm relationship with Pyotr Fomenko (creator of the P. Fomenko Workshop. - Izvestia). As life has shown, half of the actors with whom I worked in the cinema are his students.

- The work of the artistic director will take a lot of time, but what about the cinema?

I'm ready to shift the focus ... There can be no excuse - they say, I'm completely busy with cinema and there is no time for the theater. I'm interested in making a theater with a good reputation. So all the energy and time - on him, and 1% - on his personal life.

Sergey Bezrukov, having become the artistic director of the theater, actively promotes his artists in the cinema. Do you share this position?

It seems to me that today the return of good domestic cinema is, first of all, the creation of acting cinema. And where can an artist get knowledge about his profession today? Only in the theatre. It's always been that way, it's a must. Yes, a good actor should be in demand both in the theater and in the cinema. And my task as an artistic director is to make the artists become famous, and most importantly, receive adequate money.

In the summer you shot a film based on Chekhov's play "Three Sisters". There is a wonderful acting ensemble of theatrical artists ...

Yes, these are Maxim Sukhanov, Igor Yasulovich, Alexander Baluev, Irina Mazurkevich, Anna Kamenkova and others. People with a capital letter. And we find a common language. So I do not understand how you can conflict with the artists. They are the ones to take the stage. I can tell my story only through talented people - actors and playwrights. And all these conflicts are nonsense. And so we have a lot of hard things in life. I think that strife in the creative environment is a crime.

- When can we expect the film to be released?

In April, my film “Anna Karenina. Intimate Diary. Three Sisters is scheduled for October. First a film version, and then a four-episode project for television. The Three Sisters will not have a blockbuster release. We, unfortunately, live in the realities of American cinema. And Chekhov does not fit into these realities.

I always try to do what I like. For example, he tried to tell the famous play by Anton Pavlovich from a different angle. If his heroines are 20-25 years old, then mine is 55-60. This is a completely different level of relationship.

And yet, Chekhov's appearance on the big screens is a step forward. Usually only commercial projects are presented in cinemas.

Today I do not pin any hopes on producer cinema, it has discredited itself. The commercial component of cinema is an important focus, but let's count by a column how much money was spent on production, including state funds, and how much was collected at the box office? The difference is colossal.

It is impossible to make a movie for the sake of profit, and even in such a way as to deprive the director of the right to speak out. If it is not there initially, then I see no reason to shoot. I have no complexes: few spectators will come to the "Three Sisters" or a lot. I am proud that I have my own thinking audience. I am for cinema, where the actor is the person through whom I tell the story.
