Painted in 1890, Levitan's painting "Quiet Abode" was by no means intended to become a "portrait" of a particular area. For the first time, the idea to paint such a picture arose from the artist in 1887. It was then that Levitan was strongly impressed by the poetic spectacle of the sunset, which illuminated the crosses of the Savinno-Storozhevsky Monastery, which is located near Zvenigorod, with a bright, scarlet light. When painting a picture based on the memoirs of Sophia Kuvshinnikova, Levitan took the monastery on the Volga near Yuryevets as the basis of the monastery. But this did not prevent the artist from creating a picture that is distinguished by the immediacy of feeling and reproducing "living life". Alexandre Benois, who was among the first viewers to whom the painting “Quiet Abode” was presented, later shared his memories: “the feeling is like the shutters were removed from the windows, opening them wide open, and a stream of fresh, fragrant air burst into the old exhibition hall” .
For the first time, the picture found a "big audience" at a traveling exhibition held in Moscow in 1891. After her, the name of Levitan was on the lips of all intelligent Moscow. Many people came to the exhibition several times in order to once again admire the picture, which speaks of something important that touches the heart of every viewer. Many thanked Levitan for the sweet peace of mind and blissful mood that arose when looking at this quiet corner, isolated from the whole outside world, all the fussy and hypocritical things that surround a person in life. The work of Levitan did not pass, in particular, associated with a quiet monastery and past the work of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. In his story “Three Years”, he inserted an episode where the heroine, who visited an art exhibition, examines the paintings. She selflessly looks at her favorite picture, the description of which by Chekhov strongly resembles the canvas “Quiet Convent”: “on the main plan, a river flows through which a log bridge is thrown, on the other side there is a path that leads and disappears in dark grass. In the distance, on the horizon, the evening dawn burns out ... And for some reason it feels like this. That these forest and clouds and field, she had already seen many, many times. She wanted to walk along the path to where the evening dawn flickers, where the reflection of something eternal, unearthly is kept. Levitan, as it were, opens the viewer's eyes to how beautiful it is that he saw many times, did not notice his legs.

One can see an old, battered by life, bridge that leads to the other side. A small path leads from the river into the dense trees. From behind a tall grove of mighty trees you can see the domes of a church and a small monastery, it seems that bells are about to ring.
On this bank you can see snow-white flowers between juicy dark green grass, and you can feel all the freshness and purity of nature. Looking at this picture, I had a desire to pick up fresh fragrant flowers, cross the river with an old bridge and take the bouquet to the church.
Silence, tranquility, peace emanates from the picture, it is clear how the author appreciated nature with what accuracy and love he created this masterpiece. Everything seems somehow fabulous, not at all real.

Most recently, I had the honor to get acquainted with the painting by Vasnetsov "Ivan - Tsarevich on a gray wolf." Its author took one of my favorite fairy tales as a basis and depicted Ivan Tsarevich and Elena the Beautiful riding a wolf through the forest.

Levitan, both in 1890 and later, finding himself in the West and speaking highly of European culture and the comforts of life, soon began to yearn for his beloved Russian nature. So, in the spring of 1894, he wrote to Apollinariy Vasnetsov from Nice: “I can imagine what a charm we now have in Rus' - the rivers have overflowed, everything comes to life. There is no better country than Russia... Only in Russia can there be a real landscape painter.”
Once, under the influence of Kuvshinnikova, on the day of the Holy Trinity, Levitan, brought up in the traditions of Judaism, went with her for the first or second time to an Orthodox church, and there, hearing the words of the festive prayer, he suddenly shed a tear. The artist explained that this is not "Orthodox, but some kind of ... world prayer"! Thus, the landscape “Quiet Abode”, amazing in beauty and major sound, was painted, fraught with a deep philosophical discourse about life.
The monastery is partly hidden in a dense forest, illuminated by the rays of the evening sun. The domes of her church gently shine against the background of the golden-blue sky, which is reflected in the clear water. An old, in some places destroyed and patched up wooden bridge is thrown across the river. A bright sandy path leads to it, and everything seems to invite you to go and plunge into the cleansing tranquility of being a holy monastery. The mood of this picture leaves hope for the possibility of a person's harmony with himself and his attainment of quiet happiness.
There is evidence that after the appearance of this painting at a traveling exhibition in 1891, Levitan's name was "on the lips of all intelligent Moscow." People came to the exhibition only to once again see the picture, which said something very important to their hearts, and thanked the artist for “the blissful mood, the sweet peace of mind that this quiet corner of the Russian land evoked, isolated from the whole world and all hypocrites our affairs."
In the painting “Quiet Abode”, the stillness of the air, the peace of nature are captured in unusually subtle shades and color relationships. Realistic plastic has reached perfection here. In this picture, Levitan's painting acquired an incomparable quality - the accuracy of reproduction of the objective world, the air environment, chiaroscuro, color. The shadows from the trees are impeccably true. They lack approximation. The accuracy of the transmitted illumination, tone, pattern, color gives Levitan's painting the fullness of artistic expression.
It is no coincidence, as Alexandre Benois recalled, that the first viewers of the painting “seemed to have removed the shutters from the windows, opened them wide open, and a stream of fresh, fragrant air rushed into the old exhibition hall.” Nikolai Rubtsov dedicated the following poem to this painting:

Contemporaries left many confessions that Levitan helped them see their native land. Alexander Benois recalled that “only with the advent of Levitan’s paintings” did he believe in beauty, and not in the “beauties” of Russian nature: “... it turned out that the cold vault of her sky is beautiful, her twilight is beautiful, the scarlet glow of the setting sun and brown spring rivers, all relations of its special colors are beautiful”
“Levitan understood, like no one else, the tender, transparent charm of Russian nature, its sad charm ... His painting, which gives the impression of such simplicity and naturalness, is, in essence, unusually sophisticated. But this sophistication was not the fruit of some hard effort, and there was no artificiality in it. His sophistication arose by itself - it was just the way he was born. To what “hells” of virtuosity he reached in his last works! .. His outskirts, marinas, monasteries at sunset, touching in mood, were written with amazing skill ”(Golovin A.Ya.).
For the first time, Levitan drew attention to himself at the Traveling Exhibition of 1891. He exhibited before, and even for several years, but then he did not differ from our other landscape painters, from their general, gray and sluggish mass. The appearance of The Quiet Convent, on the contrary, produced a surprisingly vivid impression. It seemed as if the shutters had been removed from the windows, as if they had been thrown wide open, and a stream of fresh, fragrant air rushed into the stale exhibition hall, where there was such a foul smell from an excessive number of sheepskin coats and oiled boots.
What could be simpler than this picture? Summer morning. The icy full river smoothly bends around the wooded cape. A thin bridge on perches is thrown over it. From behind the birches of the opposite bank, in the cold, pink rays, the domes and the bell tower of a small monastery are ablaze in a completely bright sky. The motif is poetic, sweet, elegant, but, in essence, hackneyed. How little was written before the monasteries in pink morning or evening lighting? Are there enough transparent rivers, birch groves? However, it was clear that here Levitan said a new word, sang a new wonderful song, and this song about long-familiar things enchanted in such a new way that the very things seemed unseen, just discovered. They directly struck with their untouched, fresh poetry. And it immediately became clear that this was not an “accidentally successful sketch”, but a painting by a master, and that from now on this master should be one of the first among all.

In a bright sky, where small clouds float by. There is a wooden bridge across the river. On the other side, among densely planted, green tree trunks, one can see the domes of a church and the bell tower of a small monastery. In the whole picture, silence and calmness are felt. The author admired and enjoyed such a beautiful view. He conveyed the beauty he saw to the canvas with such love. This is felt in a small path that leads to the bridge, and then continues to the monastery itself. In the color of the trees. They are such a dark green color, like the shrine guards stand on all sides. Small white flowers are seen very beautifully against the green background of the grass. They shimmer like pearls in the morning sun. The whole landscape is somehow fabulous, not even real. These overflows of colors of white-golden temples, pink-blue sky, greenish crimson forest. It is incredible that ordinary people live in such a wonderful place. That they see such beauty every morning. If only I could get there for a minute...
The whole picture is filled with freshness, purity, peace. Looking at the picture, as if opening a window, you feel the fragrant air of a summer morning. I just want to walk along that bridge, pick white flowers and take them to the holy church. From the landscape seen in the picture, the mood rises and more vigor and strength are added. Quiet and wonderful piece of heaven on earth.

As in all the paintings of the author, here, too, a beautiful view of the boundless nature opens up to our eyes. Large mighty trees with their splendor and density of greenery create the appearance of an impenetrable forest. A small quiet river divided the banks with its cold water. And now they are connected only by a wooden bridge located from one trodden path to another. Judging by the trodden paths and the bridge itself, they have been here for a long time. The greenery no longer even tries to break through the trodden ground, and the wooden parts of the bridge are slowly losing their power.
In the surface of the water, as in a huge mirror, the light blue sky with fluffy clouds, dark green trees and bushes of the banks, the domes of the church and some buildings are reflected. From the overflow of flowers on the water, you can see that it is already evening. Peace and quiet fill the circle. Only soon the ringing of the bell tower will break the silence, inviting everyone to the evening service, and will fall silent again, transferring ownership to the evening twilight.
No matter how simple the picture may seem to us, a very important inner world is hidden in it. And for each viewer, it has its own notes and sounds. This is her specialty and insight. The canvas deserves the highest praise.
