So what is a tribal?

Tribal Bellydance is one of the youngest styles of belly dance. Tribal is the style of the American school of belly dance. This is a whole cultural layer of eclectic dance movements, costumes and music borrowed from various peoples of the Near and Middle East, North Africa, Spain and India. This is a multifaceted dance based on ethnic elements that have undergone modern processing.

Tribe in translation from English means "tribe, clan", respectively, tribal - "tribal, belonging to any tribe."

This style, unusual for Russia, appeared in the USA in the second half of the 20th century. Its founder is Jamila Salimpour. At that time in America, belly dancing as such was practically unknown, and all knowledge about it was limited to its Hollywood performance. All its elements: sconces, belts, chiffon skirts are inspired by the West. The women undressed and began to dance, but it was no longer a classical Arabic dance, but belly dance had completely lost its historical, sacred meaning. The dancers with whom Jamila was engaged in belly dance began to leave this direction, because they were not satisfied with the attitude of the public towards their occupation. Then Jamila Salimpur assembled a troupe of forty people called "Bal-Anat" (Bal-Anat). She taught belly dancing, developing her method and terminology of movements, guided by the stories of her military father, who traveled extensively in Africa and saw how Egyptian belly dancers danced. At the same time, being interested in the history and culture of India, Jamila, based on her generalizations, decided to modify the dance. She began to interpret Moroccan dances, the dances of the gypsies of Algeria and Egypt. She showed the Americans tribal, folk group dances with their own specific movements, tattoos and costumes. She did not call her style tribal, simply referring to it as belly dancing.

Jamila had a student, Masha Archer, a native of Kiev, who studied with her for two and a half years, and then decided to found her own troupe, The San Francisco Classic Dance Troupe. All her followers admitted that Masha was an extremely bad teacher, and in costumes she preferred excessive eclecticism, combining the incongruous. Her dance was based largely on free improvisation. But the merit of Masha Archer is that she took belly dancers from cabarets and bars to more respected stages. She fundamentally emphasized that belly dancing is a high art, worthy only of a big stage.

Masha Archer's student, who studied with her for seven years, Carolina Nericcio, became the founder of the basics of tribal - American Tribal Style (ATS). It was Carolina who developed and created this style as it is to this day, with a unique and clearly built system of improvisation, movements and transitions. In 1987, she founded her troupe "Fat Chance Belly Dance" (Fat Chance Belly Dance) - a modern standard, the bearer of the classic tribal style, an example for troupes to follow from all over the world.

What does tribal look like and how does it differ from classic bellydance?

Basically, belly dance is an Egyptian technique: stretching up, lightness, coquetry, seduction. Tribal is the complete opposite. This is a dance of female strength and independence, in which attention is paid to a completely different technique and aesthetics of movements. There is practically no element of seduction, an element of coquetry. Tribal combines the tribal dance traditions of gypsies with elements borrowed from flamenco: proud posture, strong arms, chin, back, quite expressive flow of movements.

The basis, the frame on which the movements are strung, is the body: a straight back, a 90-degree chin angle, high elbows, even shoulders and, of course, a Spanish brush. Look - a little down, but not arrogant. In tribal, the principle of muscle isolation works: for example, only the hips work - the rest is static. Also one of the characteristics of the style is to emphasize certain movements by isolating them and repeating them: for example, hits or eights with the hips, circles or eights with the chest, which are repeated several times (while remembering that the rest of the body is motionless). Step - on the middle half-toes, but often the movements fall on the full foot. Basically, the dance counts for eight counts.

The most characteristic feature of the tribal style, which follows from the name, is that this dance is performed by a group (you can call it whatever you like: tribe, clan, family). It is very important that, sending female energy to the public, the dancers support each other during the dance. In this regard, tribal can be compared to Irish step, where working in the closest bodily and visual contact with a partner is an integral part of the performance.

Tribal is a group improvisation consisting of movements that are carefully studied by the group members and performed by everyone in the same way.

Most often in a group there are two or four dancers with one leader, the role of which is alternately performed by all or almost all participants in the dance. All bundles are based on a system of symbols, signs given by the leader. Transitions from one movement to another are indicated by hand movements, turns, and changes of direction.

Tribal style does not stand still - it lives and actively develops, there are new directions:

Tribal fusion (tribal fusion). The name of the direction comes from the English fusion (fusion, mixing, unification) - the imposition, for example, of Spanish music and Arabic music, the use of Egyptian technology and Turkish music, that is, the combination in a dance performance of various styles of dance, music and costumes of different cultures.

Neo Tribal (new tribal) is a mixture of tribal, classical oriental dance Raks Sharki and other styles. More playful and contains less repetitive step patterns, it has ballet and jazz influences. The group's performance contains solos, duets and group dances interspersed. The costume and decorations are as in the usual tribal, but they do not wear a turban and prefer bright colors. The dancers show more imagination in the dance.

In the New Age Tribal (new age tribal), the influence of esotericism is noticeable. Dancers meditate before dancing to cleanse themselves of negative energy and absorb positive energy in the dance. The dance uses breathing exercises. Participants must be aware of their own aura and the aura of others. Esoteric music is used.

Gothic bellydance is close to tribal fusion.

Chinese tribal fusion. Obviously a mix of tribal and movements from Chinese traditional dances and martial arts.

Tribal is the collective name of a huge dance direction of our time.

The basis of this dance is the American tribal style. This is a synthetic style that was founded in the 70s of the twentieth century by Carolina Nericchio. The basis for the creation of this style was Indian dance, belly dance, and flamenco dance. This style includes many directions. Tribal is one of the unique group dance systems that allows dancers to perform group numbers without rehearsals and prior preparation.

The ATC (American Tribal Style) system includes movements (more than a hundred) choreography with a well-defined technique. Dancers can understand the essence of dance and movement with the help of special names - keys, which are called in English.

The ATC group thus does not learn dances in advance. The dance is created right on the stage. Contact occurs with the help of a special dance language.

This is not only a dance, but also a specific reaction game with clear rules, it is also a training using a non-verbal communication process. Tribal also teaches great improvisation. The style is spectacular, arousing the interest of its participants. Watching a tribal dance can be like watching a game. Connoisseurs of dance technique will understand what is happening much deeper.

The advantages of this dance system are that, knowing the technique of movements, you can dance perfectly synchronously. It does not require special acquaintance and pre-rehearsal. The dancers can be representatives of different countries, while dancing very synchronously and very harmoniously. Therefore, an arbitrary change of movements is simply impossible.

For more than a decade, dancers have been creating a variety of styles of tribal dance. New concepts and names of the tribal have appeared. This is tribal dance, tribal fusion dance. The last direction is a mixture of ATS with other dance styles, variety shows, and movement techniques. Tribal fusion mixes many dance styles.

Very notable is the gothic tribal style, which mixes ATS and the aesthetics of the gothic culture. The general view of the room will be filled with a specific style and corresponding emotions. Dark images are used that characterize the Gothic style. This style has been formed for a long time and is very popular.

There are other styles as well, such as the improvisational style of tribal, which is based on synchronized improvisation, classical tribal, old school tribal, and more.

Whichever of the styles is of interest to the connoisseur of dance, the sensations in any case will be only positive. Tribal well develops flexibility, the ability to control your body. Helps to relax and gain self-confidence. This style is very popular and is constantly filled with new techniques, which cannot but attract the attention of connoisseurs of tribal culture.

The founder of the tribal is Jamila Salimpour, as well as her students Masha Archer and Carolina Nerikchio. They developed a style that later became known as the American Tribal Style. The formation of this oriental dance was influenced by Indian dance, flamenco, African dance, the participation of yoga, modern, even hip-hop is noticeable. Music for this style is mainly used from the regions of the Middle East, North Africa, sometimes Indian trance.

Tribe in English means "tribe", tribal - "belonging to, inherent in any tribe, tribal". Tribal Dance respectively means "tribal dance" or "tribal dance". But this is not a folk style, but a product of fantasy, a mixture of different dance styles: Egyptian folk styles, flamenco, Indian, Tunisian, Moroccan, Turkish dances.
Tribal is a dance of female power, a group of dancers is a well-coordinated team, united by love for dance and sympathy for each other.
Characteristic clear movements, synchronicity of the group, costumes assembled from elements borrowed from different sources, but which nevertheless look truly ethnic, a sense of mutual support and responsibility for each other in the dance - these are all signs of the tribal style.
But perhaps the main and most striking property of this style is that it contains a coherent system of simple rules that allows the group to dance harmoniously, without memorizing dance performances, to create a composition right on stage. This is a real group improvisation!
What does a tribal group look like? These are women dressed in large, often multi-tiered skirts, under which wide trousers are worn. Above the skirts are belts embroidered with ethnic patterns, decorated with shells, mirrors, metal ornaments, and heavy tassels. A top, blouse or "choli" (top with sleeves) is put on the upper part of the body, on top of this - a bodice embroidered with coins, etc. The stomach is left open. A turban is sometimes wound around the head, which is also decorated in various ways. Dancers also use massive jewelry on the neck and arms, bracelets or bells are often worn on the legs, the body is tattooed or imitation tattoos are made. Tribal dancers often carry sagats (dulcimer) on their hands, which are used in the dance.
Tribal movements are also very recognizable, primarily because when a particular movement is performed, it is repeated several times in a row, and all parts of the body that are not involved in it must be isolated, almost motionless. At the same time, a rather rigid position of the upper body is maintained, reminiscent of flamenco dancers: a straightened back, straightened shoulders, proudly raised head, raised and deployed elbows. The dancer has to keep her upper body straight and almost static all the time. Because of this, high demands are placed on the technique of the hips and legs, the movements of which are taken from oriental styles and are quite energetic. The work of the arms and hands in tribal is also close to those in flamenco.
The music, under which the tribal is usually performed, is simple, with a clear constant rhythm, with folklore oriental motifs, the original is desirable, devoid of computer or synthesizer processing. The costume of this dance includes wide skirts, usually made of dense opaque fabric, voluminous trousers, choli blouses or bodices. It is customary to decorate blouses and belts of skirts with coins, heavy tassels, and large metal ornaments. At the beginning of the development of the tribal, the head of the dancer was covered with a turban or turban. Now many dancers have abandoned headdresses and use flowers to decorate their hair. A large number of bracelets are usually put on the hands.

Despite its recent birth, the tribal has already been divided into several directions: american tribal, gothic tribal, fusion tribal, etc. The youngest direction of tribal is the Indian tribal, which got its birth at Goan trance parties and is now gaining popularity.

Many consider Jill Parker and her dance group Ultra Gypsy to be the founder of tribal fusion.. Tribal fusion is quite easily recognizable by the costume. For him, many dancers use flared trousers, large mesh bodysuits worn under the bodice, decorate the skirt belt with cords. twisted from thick woolen threads. For this style, dancers prefer to use Egyptian folk music, as well as electronic music.

tribal- a young style, its formation has not yet been completed and the number of directions in it will probably increase. Many dancers who do not want to limit themselves to any classical dance will come to it, they want to express their individuality and originality, because in this dance there are no restrictions on height, weight, age.

dancer costume:

Two skirts, each 25 yards (22.8 meters) at the hem;
Wide bloomers with a yoke;
Black velvet or bright Rajasthani choli;
Belt with pom-poms;
Hip scarf;
A bodice embroidered with coins and chains tied around the neck;
The abundance of massive jewelry on the arms, neck and head;

Improvisational Tribal Style, Group Improvisation Stile
ITS (pronounced "ITS") is a fusion of the PBX base with the personal style of the performing team. The bottom line is that a separate team develops its own vocabulary of movements, can supplement the rules of rebuilding based on the dictionary and ATS rules, change ATS costumes up to Tribal Fusion. In this style, unlike ATS, it is not necessary to play sagats. Improvising in this way is possible only in your own group! There are many pioneers of this style.

Tribal fusion is one of the most spectacular dance styles. It combines spectacle based on illusion, virtuoso control of the body, unbanal musical accompaniment and the brightness of dance images.

This is a dance that is not boring to watch. He takes the viewer into the world of secrets and mysteries, the plasticity of the female body, waves and isolations, incredible discoveries about human capabilities and beauty that delights.

Tribal fusion has few boundaries. Based on the American tribal style, it expands, absorbing the best practices of various dance styles. Spectacle and freedom of expression make tribal fusion the basis for vibrant productions, allowing everyone to reveal their potential and become the hero of an incredible story told by dance.

Technical base tribal fusion consists of: a characteristic setting of the arms and body (basic posture), waves (waves), slips (slides), twists (twists), circles (circles), eights (figures 8), shaking (shimmies), locks (locks), some other types of fixations and isolations. Many movements in tribal fusion are a modified vocabulary of the American tribal style. This is especially true for old style tribal fusion.

If you have taken up training in tribal fusion, it is worth noting basics on which this dance is based.

  1. Royal posture. The most important thing in tribal fusion is the setting of the body. A well-known style star, Sharon Kihara, gave her a good definition: you should move in the dance as if a queen is walking, whose hands are lowered on the scruffs of two large tigers a little ahead of her. Hence the second principle:
  2. Isolation of movement (try to start twitching when your hands are dangerously close to wild animals!). The movement of each part of the body is performed separately from the other. Here the principle of isolation of adjacent parts of the body operates. For example, by moving the chest, we isolate the hips and shoulders.
  3. Smoothness and fluidity. Each movement smoothly and imperceptibly passes into another.
  4. Change of rhythms. Tribal fusion is characterized by frequent rhythm changes - slow and fast. Hence the great attention to slowing down (stretching) and speeding up movements.
  5. Overlays. After mastering the basics of tribal fusion and working out the basic elements, the movements begin to layer on each other, creating the illusion of new elements and demonstrating the fantastic possibilities of the body. Mastering the technique of overlays requires preparation.

On style formation such dance styles as bellydance, breakdance, Indian dance, flamenco, jazz and, of course, the American tribal style had a great influence. At the same time, tribal fusion itself did not become a mixture of these styles, but turned into an independent direction, which cannot be confused with anything. Music for tribal fusion can be very diverse, but basically uses electronic music, once again emphasizing the novelty of the direction. But it should be noted that only high quality electronic music is selected in order to better demonstrate scrupulous work on the smallest technique. At the same time, the style has no rigid musical boundaries. Depending on what mixture of dance styles is emphasized, the choice of music will be directed: be it ethnic, new age, classical, gothic rock, etc.

Typical tribal fusion artists: Amon Tobin, Pentaphobe, Solace, Maduro, Beats Antique, Helm, Djinn, August Hoerr…

world icons tribal fusion are Rachel Bryce, Sharon Kihara, Morya Cheppel, Cami Liddle, Mardy Love, Zoe Jakes - all these names are originally associated with the show teams Bellydance Superstars and Indigo Bellydance, thanks to whose work tribal fusion has gained immense popularity around the world.

Suits for tribal fusion are very diverse. They are always of high quality and use the finest fittings and fabrics in order to convey the image of the dance and help to demonstrate all the nuances of the body positions. There is no place for cheapness here, tribal fusion is for gourmets who prefer the best in dance, music, and costume.

In Minsk tribal fusion is actively developing, specialized festivals and parties are held. Tribal fusion performers are in demand at national scale events and receive international recognition. The tone in teaching this style is set by several large schools, among which the school of dance and self-development "Nimfeya" occupies one of the leading places.

tribaldance direction, the author of which is Carolina Nericchio based on improvisation and group interaction.

Carolina Nericchio studied dance with Masha Archer in the 70s of the last century for 14 years. Later, she created own dance group and tribal style borrowed from his teacher the concept of tribal dance, when dancers from the choir spontaneously come to the center to perform the dance, and uniformity of costumes. Music was mainly used ethnic peoples of North Africa and Central Asia.

The result was a dance whose style combines oriental belly dance, traditional Indian dances and Spanish flamenco. The difference between tribal and other common dances is group synchronized improvisation. From a standing choir groups spontaneously form dancers - 2-4 people who go to the center and dance in sync while improvising. The combination of improvisation and synchronicity is achieved through existing vocabulary of movements and rebuildings, which each participant knows and constant non-verbal communication between speakers, with conventional signs. For an inexperienced viewer, the tribal looks like like staging.

Tribal has many varieties, for example, tribal fusion, when the performer expresses herself, d adding to the movements of the tribal the style of dances close to it. At the same time, along with group improvisation, individual.

There is another kind improvisational tribal, in which each team of performers develops your vocabulary of movements, rules of rebuilding and means of non-verbal communication. As a result dancers can only improvise within their own group.

Unlike other dance styles, tribal contests are not welcome. because they are believed to lead to fragmentation and stereotypes.

If we decompose the tribal into components, we can distinguish the following key components that form a single system:

  • A set of well-defined movements and connections- more than 100 in total;
  • Unified tribal terminology, which is used in all dance groups of this style;
  • Hint key system, which are movements imperceptible to the viewer, with the help of which the dancers communicate with each other during the dance, warning each other about further movements so as not to lose synchronism;
  • Group builds and rebuilds;
  • Music theory improvisation.

Having mastered this toolkit, tribal dancers can create dances right during the performance, not memorizing them in advance, but communicating with each other through dance language.

So tribal is not so much a dance as a show how much group practice, including game of attention and reaction, non-verbal communication training and self-disclosure through dance improvisation.

Due to the versatility of the tribal and a single base of movements, it can be danced by people who seeing each other for the first time and even speaking different languages.

In Russia tribal fun has arrived relatively recently, but has already managed to gain popularity: today there are groups developing this dance direction in almost every major city. At the same time, it is observed lack of qualified teachers, which is why the quality of tribal in Russia is still somewhat behind the world.

In conclusion, it must be said that although training in tribal takes time and effort, but for this the practitioner will be rewarded with the possibility of true dance communication with other dancers from different countries, and gaining self-expression through improvisation in dance.
