Basically, children's drawings of butterflies boil down to the image of a barrel with frilled wings on the sides, and all this is topped with a smiley face with a spirally twisted mustache. In flight, butterflies are usually depicted simply vertically, as insects are located in pictures in books on entomology.
In other words, a wonderful phenomenon - the flight of a butterfly, children draw not like a flight and not like a butterfly. I note that I have never been able to draw a flying butterfly like this - from memory it would be difficult - to thoughtfully observe butterflies and draw from nature - they don’t pose))).

How to draw a butterfly realistically - lesson 1
First, we make a sketch with a pencil, with light strokes, so that we can correct it. And, only after making sure that the image is captured correctly, we refine the lines more clearly.
Our first model is photographed at the moment when the upper wings are wide open. But the lower wing is visible only one ... and why not? I've looked at a lot of photos, and it looks like the bottom pair of butterfly wings open less often and not as widely as the top one in flight. That is, the lower wings are now closed at the butterfly.
Also notice the position of the body, it's, like, diagonally. Not horizontally, like a bird, not vertically, like a rocket taking off, but at an angle (like a flying angel). The legs are slightly pressed under the body down. That is, they are not strongly pressed, but they do not hang freely in the air either.
The wings are very large. The upper ones are almost triangular and in perspective, and even in perspective, their shape is very significantly distorted.
Oh, how difficult it is for children...
I agree, but this does not mean that for ease of perception, now simplify wildlife to the level of symbols, completely distorting reality.

This picture is similar to the previous one, only flying in the opposite direction. This is good: now it will become clear what we have learned from the previous lesson. In this butterfly, the upper wings are also very sharply open, the lower ones are drawn together, and again one is completely obscured.

It is no secret that many children like to draw bright creatures, creatures and animals, and that is why it will be fun for a child to draw a butterfly. A butterfly drawn with a simple pencil looks great, but if such a butterfly is painted with paints, it will become very bright and attractive.

I would like to tell you and show you how to draw a beautiful butterfly with your child in stages. For beginners, this lesson will not seem difficult, because each stage is described in steps. We will draw in the following sequence:

Well, let's draw a butterfly with a pencil.
Step 1
The first step in drawing a butterfly is very simple - you just need to draw a small line as long as the body of your beautiful butterfly will be.

Now around this line we will draw two rounded lines - one is longer, the other is shorter, and on top we will draw a circle that will represent the head of a butterfly. From the head you need to draw beautiful antennae of a butterfly, thanks to which it can navigate in space.
Step 3
You can start drawing the upper wings. They can be any shape you want - both rounded and with sharp ends. It is desirable that they be the same size and shape, otherwise the butterfly pattern will turn out to be asymmetrical.
Step 4
And now draw the lower wings of the butterfly. Usually the lower wings are slightly larger than the upper ones, so if you draw them a little more, it will add realism to the butterfly drawing. Again, the lower wings can be any shape, for example, if you draw the upper wings rounded, then the lower ones can have sharp or straight ends and corners.
Step 5
We remove the very first line so that it does not interfere with us. Now you can fill in the butterfly wings with patterns. Remember that butterfly wings are very delicate and even transparent. The drawings on the wings can be anything, you can draw whatever you want - circles, lines and other patterns. We move from the center of the wings to the edges.
Step 6
We continue to fill the wings with patterns. They may not be the same, so the butterfly will look even more interesting.
Step 7
Step by step we draw patterns to the end of the wings. Now you can move on to the bottom of the butterfly.
Step 8
On the lower wings of the butterfly, I draw very few patterns, and make them more geometric than on the upper ones.

Pencil execution has several basic steps. Following a simple instruction, you will get a beautiful picture. Here's how to draw a butterfly with a pencil step by step (instruction for beginners):
- Draw a straight line in the center of the length of the body of the insect.
- From above, draw a circle that will serve as the head, and from it, on both sides of the straight line, make 2 wavy ones - they are the body of the insect. From the circle up symmetrically draw 2 smooth lines with curls at the ends - these are the antennae.
- Construct a rectangle, in the center of which will be the previously drawn straight line. Draw diagonals and center lines inside, and divide the bottom side into 12 parts. Count 2 parts on both sides and connect these points with the upper corners - you get a trapezoid.
- Place the upper wings in the 2 upper rectangles, placing them diagonally, while the side edge should coincide with the side of the trapezoid.
- Having chosen the shape of the lower wings, for example, in the form of a rose or a drop, draw them according to the same principle as the upper ones.
- Erase additional lines with an eraser, draw the contours of the wings at your discretion, and sketch symmetrical veins inside them.
- Outline the finished painting.
watercolor
The picture can be left in pencil form or continue to paint with watercolors. To do this, you will need several tools:
- watercolor paper of the desired format, A4 or A3 is enough for a larger picture;
- jar for water;
- watercolor paints;
- palette;
- squirrel brushes No. 3 and No. 8.
For a watercolor drawing, you need a pencil base. To do this, use the instructions above. After completing the picture in pencil, you can start coloring it with watercolors. Here's how to draw a butterfly with paints:
- Watercolor drawings have a transparent structure, so erase not only the auxiliary lines with an eraser, but also a little basic so that you can easily distinguish the outline, but at the same time they do not show through the paint.
- With a larger brush, fill the wings with blue or any color you like.
- Take a smaller brush, dilute the brown paint with water on the palette and cover the areas between the veins with it.
- In the same technique, fill in the body of the insect.
- Cover the head of the insect with brown, and outline the contours of the wings with it.
- Use a thin brush to make the antennae.
- With translucent brown, make strokes along the contour of the wings so that it looks like villi.
- Repeat again on the body of the insect to give it a hairy look.

How to draw a butterfly
1. With a simple pencil, with barely noticeable lines, outline the elongated thin body of a butterfly. On the sides of the upper body, draw up rounded lines and continue them to the middle of the body so that oblong wings are obtained. Below them, draw small lower semicircular wings.
With a black pencil, mark two small round eyes in place of the head. Outline the outline of the body, narrowing it just above the middle. Paint the bottom part black.

2. In the upper part of the body, under the head, draw a short horizontal line. With the same black pencil, circle the upper and lower wings. Draw curved antennae with thick dots at the ends above the eyes.

3. Make the lines thicker at the base of the upper wing on the right and at the bottom corners of both upper wings. Inside, from the middle of the upper body, release small smooth lines to the sides.
With a blue pencil, without going beyond these lines, partially paint over the upper wings so that they are darker at the base. Barely pressing the pencil, decorate the lower wings next to the butterfly's body with the same color.

4. With turquoise or light blue, continue to paint all the wings to about the middle of them. To ensure a smooth color transition, slightly overlap the previous shade and do not press hard.

5. With a red pencil, only slightly pressing on it, paint over a little more of the upper wing on the left. In its upper part on the right, capture more space when decorating than in the lower one. Details are visible in the photo. Add some red to the lower wings as well, but don't paint over them completely.

6. Erase the upper corner of the upper wing on the right and add a line with a burgundy pencil in place of the previous one. Paint over the wing with the same color, a little short of the edge. Add a burgundy layer on the wing on the left, leaving more space on the edge than on the element on the other side. In the upper parts, make the color more saturated.
Completely paint over the lower wings with a burgundy pencil, pressing harder at the body.

7. Use purple to darken the corner of the upper wing on the left. Clicking on the burgundy pencil, circle the left edge of this wing with it, a few circles at the top and paint over the rest of the space. On the wing on the right, add the same circles symmetrically and tint the unpainted edge, going over the previous color.
Thicken the burgundy layer on the lower wings. Circle the lower border of the wing on the right with this pencil.

8. With a blue pencil, go again at the base of the upper wings, as well as along the burgundy color at the middle of the body on the lower wings.
With violet, paint over the upper corner and the entire edge of the large wing on the left, with smooth lines going over the previous shade. Paint the wing on the right in the same way. The detailed process is shown in the video below. With the same pencil, tone the side corners of the lower wings.

9. Make more visible the red layer at the top of the big wings. Add this color to the bottom edge of the small wings.

10. With a black pencil, draw the bases of the upper wings next to the head. Continue up the lines outlined just below, making them curved. Connect them with short slashes to the edges of the wings. Add one more line to the sides from the corners on the resulting figures, drawing them to purple.

11. From the beginning of the figures drawn in the previous one, draw horizontal smooth lines to the edges of the wings. Darken the corners between them with black.
Select the bottom borders of the large wings. Where they touch small ones, make the lines thick. Circle the edges of the lower wings with the same black pencil.

12. With black color, select the upper tips and side edges of the large wings by circling the white circles. At the bottom, above the horizontal lines, add some slanted strokes.
Draw several horizontal small lines along the lower border of the small wings. Add black dots at the bottom. Select the burgundy layer on all four wings.

13. At the end, draw black thin streaks on all wings and tint the places on the sides of the bottom of the calf. With gray and lilac pencils, add a shadow from the butterfly.

The second step is a little more difficult than the first, but we are sure that you can still handle it. We draw the torso, divided into two parts. At the same time, the lower part of the body is slightly larger than the upper.
Also in this step we make a circle, which will be the head of our butterfly, and draw a long antennae. 
Stage 3
It's time for the wings. We will draw them in stages, first the upper part, and in the next step the lower one.
So, usually in butterflies, the upper wings are much larger than the lower ones and they grow, respectively, from the upper part of the body. In our case, they are triangular in shape and almost the same size as the bottom ones. If you don't like the triangular shape, then you can easily draw any other shape. 
Stage 4
Now we are working on the lower wings. They are rounded, large and strongly go beyond the line of the body, which we drew in the first step. In case you haven't noticed, the upper wings should extend beyond this line as well.
The most difficult thing about drawing a butterfly is to make symmetrical wings, of course, if you work on a computer, then it will not be difficult for you to achieve symmetry, but if you draw a butterfly with a pencil on paper, then you may have problems. Therefore, be patient and eraser :) 
Stage 5
Now comes the most enjoyable stage in drawing a butterfly. We are working on patterns on the wings! Patterns can be very diverse, namely round, linear, plain, multi-colored, etc.
So, we make the symmetry of the patterns on the right and left.

Patterns are not wings, they can be symmetrical or not symmetrical at all. Even if you want to draw a butterfly with completely different patterns on different wings, then this is quite normal.
