Eastern mentality. Features of the mentality and worldview of the ancient East

17.05.2019

To be honest, the news I read today about the kidnapping of regular tourists in Sinai made me tense. You will say: "since when does Sasha get stressed by such news? Tourists have been kidnapped before, but you continued to travel to Dahab and did not worry." Of course, the mess did not start yesterday, and you and I have long known that most of the Sinai Peninsula is not controlled by the authorities, and its north is completely in the hands of jihadists. Moreover, exactly a year ago I published a post "", where I touched in detail on the topic of kidnapping, drug trafficking and even the numerous murders of African illegal immigrants in the vast Egyptian Sinai. What has changed now? Two things that would seem unimportant to a person far from the Middle East -

Firstly, the gouging Egyptian police, under the influence of the general chaos in the country, lost their fear and started with tourists, which had never happened before. Secondly, terrorists have never been so close to the tourist zone before. Please note that the bandits stopped a taxi with tourists on the main highway leading from Taba on the border with Israel to the youth resort of Dahab. This road has always been considered the safest in all of Egypt, he himself traveled along it dozens of times. Thirdly, everything around is even visually degrading, starting from roads that no one has been repairing for two years now (since the day Mubarak was overthrown), and ending with the infrastructure of the Egyptian security services. The following frames are unlikely to give you a sense of security, as well as pissing law enforcement officers. Thanks for the photos curiousalex , who staged a photo hunt for Egyptian border guards patrolling the border between Egypt and Israel, see his post " Along the border with a camera" -

But actually I wanted to talk about something else -

Features of the Eastern mentality

More than 10 years ago, as a simple soldier in the Israeli army, I sometimes wondered how harshly the military sometimes treated the Palestinians. The fact is that quite often I was sent as a driver of a patrol jeep to the Palestinian territories in support of the border police or paratroopers. I remember many harsh rules on the local population, which were due to security reasons, but often seemed to me an excess. For example, as a punishment for throwing stones at Israeli cars, we could close the exit from some Arab village and prevent them from leaving for work, the hospital, or school all day. But then the alarmed elders of the village appeared and tearfully promised the military to curb the hooligans, after which it was quiet for a month or two, and no stones were thrown. And here's another thing: there was a rule that no one could overtake a patrol jeep slowly moving along the road, and a convoy of Arab cars lined up behind us. It would seem that we are driving 30 km/h and are not in a hurry, why make it so that fifty cars trail behind us? Let them overtake! This is what I thought. And the officer explained to me that it is very easy to shoot us at point-blank range from an overtaking car, and when they lag behind, it is much more difficult. Let's say, I agreed, but such incidents happen extremely rarely, but we, in fact, punish thousands of ordinary people who have not guilty of anything before us. The officer had an answer to this too -

...We taught the Arabs to live in a certain coordinate system, clearly drawing the lines of what is permitted. Sometimes the innocent suffer, yes. But a feature of the Arab mentality is respect for the strong and contempt for the weak. They perceive any indulgence as a weakness and immediately win back their living space, for them there are no concepts of ethics and the value of human life. If we weaken, they will tear us to pieces...

The idea is that, according to the officer, it is impossible to negotiate with this audience in a human way. You cannot meet with them, shake hands with each other and agree: up to this tree is your land, and then - mine. No! With a European you can, but not with an Arab. For as soon as you give him a hand and take a step back (as agreed), he will decide, "Loshara, it turns out that you are a weakling, since you agreed to make concessions? Well, well, right now, I will completely throw you out of here."

Returning to Egypt

To be honest, I did not agree with the officer. Seriously, is it possible to keep a whole nation in check because of a certain number of bastards and terrorists? This is illogical and unfair. But life has shown that in part of his arguments, the officer was certainly right. In the East, the weak are not tolerated, they are trampled underfoot and conquered by living space. Egyptian President Mubarak kept a tight grip on a huge 80-million-strong state, the bulk of the population of which are illiterate peasants, embittered at their miserable and hopeless lot. Some of the peasants Mubarak dressed in military uniforms and gave some money, following the principle "the best guard is a former slave." And this cattle, denounced in the form, began to spread rot on their own fellow citizens. But this is the Arab East, where such a system is everywhere, it is impossible otherwise - they will trample.

What happened? There is no longer a stern Pharaoh Mubarak, who could praise, or could cut off his head. And the illiterate people at the first moment were confused, how is it? Surely no one else will hit us on the head if we ask for an extra cake of bread? For about a year, people watched, expecting a catch; suddenly the pharaoh will return and punish for disobedience? But the pharaoh never returned. And the people realized that the finest hour had come. Now you can do everything that only wanders into the mindless head of a sexually preoccupied illiterate fellah. You can rob a neighbor, you can set fire to Christian churches, you can rape women, you can kidnap tourists. Finally, happiness has knocked on the door of ordinary Egyptians, do whatever you want, and you will get nothing for it!

As you can see, the situation is developing exactly as that Israeli officer said. As soon as the system of total control and the inevitability of punishment collapsed, the crowd immediately lost its fear and went on the offensive. Today, having kidnapped tourists directly from the tourist zone, the rednecks have won more living space for themselves. They will only advance, making the next step carefully (testing the power for lice), if they don’t get hit on the head, they will capture more and more. That's what the Eastern mentality is.

Restore order in Egypt in 24 hours

If Mubarak had been released from a Cairo prison and asked to restore order in the country within 24 hours, he would have started with napalm. Bedouin kidnapped a tourist? What tribe? Such-and-such? Level all their villages to the ground, shoot and burn them all without exception. What, there are still problems, say queues at gas stations and fuel is stolen? No problem: to cut off the head of Mursi and all Islamists, to hang the governor of Sinai, to shoot the head of the police, to snatch the index finger from each of the drivers of all oil trucks who pour gasoline "past the checkout" without anesthesia. Then Mubarak would have had lunch (a hard day) and by evening he would have restored order in the country. What, someone remembered democracy? You checkers, or let's go?

The values of democracy in the Arab East

Two things: democracy is the right of the majority to destroy the minority, and democracy is the right to make a choice. First and last choice in their life. Pharaoh Mubarak was removed - a much more stupid and vicious Islamist pharaoh Mursi came. There will be chaos and bloodshed. By the way, exactly the same thing is happening these days in Syria.

(to the lecture: Ethnic psychology and culture. Psychological dimension of cultures)

The differences between West and East are profound. For example, what is human life for different cultures? For the West, it seems to be considered the main value. But in the East, this is not so simple. Shaheeds blow themselves up in the crowd to get to heaven, and society approves of this. In some Asian regions, the custom of blood feud still exists. And in China, during the “cultural revolution”, they did not think it was a pity to destroy a quarter of the country's population so that the remaining three-quarters would live happily. On the other hand, what has the Western way of life given to the world in the last hundred years? The pursuit of super-wealth, moral decay, world wars and such a frenzied arms race that humanity almost wiped itself off the face of the earth. So the two sides of the world clearly understand happiness differently. This means that they strive for different things and live differently. It will be useful to determine which type of worldview each of us is closer to.

3 points or less. Eastern mentality. For you, the most important thing is thinking about yourself, about your own place in this world. To understand who you are and why you have been given life - this is the question to which you are ready to devote years. At the same time, you do not take the current events of real life so seriously and consider them a little from afar. In some Eastern religions, the issue of reincarnation (transmigration of souls) is considered, and this, of course, left an imprint on the mentality of the people of the East. For them, the current life is not the only one, so there is still a lot of time to think and correct mistakes. You are characterized by moral stability, stability of views, recognition of authorities. You respect any antiquity, honor traditions consecrated for centuries. You are convinced that spiritual life is more important than material life. The pursuit of worldly success is not for you. Your best time will come in old age.

4-6 points. Russian mentality. The name of this category is conditional, of course, are representatives of the Western world. However, for the sake of the theory of "Eurasian civilization", this option should also be considered. The Russians are, as it were, bearers of the moral values of both the East and the West. Respect for the elderly, hospitality, striving for spirituality - this is from the East. From the West, they inherited openness, a craving for knowledge, a desire for comfort, and much more. As a result, a people has appeared whose intellect and vitality are so strong that they help us out in the most difficult situation. If you fall into this category, then you probably have an extraordinary mind, possess creative talents and, most likely, are capable of a real feat. For "in every Russian there is something heroic." A person with your mentality often values other people's lives more than their own. And you yourself live as if you feel some kind of mission on yourself. If you have already realized it, if you, for example, have understood that your mission is to create a family, raise children, help the unfortunate, make as many friends as possible, and so on, then your most productive time is maturity. And if you have not yet understood why you live, then the time has not come. But it can come at any time.

7 points or more. Western mentality. You consider yourself, first of all, a person. Your mission in life is to be as successful as possible. You know that life is given to a person only once, therefore every deed lived is valuable. You view life as a service: one must serve God, oneself, one's family, one's friends, and even the whole world. You believe that one person can change the world, and you do not exclude that you can become this person. You consider education and professionalism to be the most important dignity of a person. And the main task of any person living on earth is to do business, that is, to study or work. To change the surrounding reality for the better is not only useful, but also pleasant. You live in the real world and value first of all what brings benefit and success. Your best time is youth.

Introduction

The concepts of “culture East” and “Western culture” are very conditional. Figuratively speaking, East which is usually understood as Asia and West represented by Europe and North America, these are two branches of the same tree, each developing in its own direction, at the same time, in parallel, but in different ways. None of them rises above the other. They have a certain similarity, but there are also enough differences.

The division of cultures into western and eastern implies not only their geographical location, but also different mentality the peoples inhabiting these territories, that is, the difference in the characteristics of the ways and methods of knowing the world, scientific, religious, artistic, aesthetic and spiritual values, basic worldviews, socio-economic and political structures East and West. Such a division, of course, is conditional for cultural studies. These are one of the main cultural and spiritual centers in the world.

Many people divide culture into Eastern and Western. There are a sufficient number of followers of each of the directions, it is difficult to say which humanity prefers more. « Eastern» or « Western» culture models. On East and West their development trends, differences, directions, and there are even similarities, although they oppose each other.

Problem mentality of the West and the East.

mentality

mentality(lat. mens, mentis - soul, spirit, mind and alis - others)- mindset and way of thinking. A set of intellectual, emotional, cultural features of the worldview and worldview, value systems inherent in a social or ethnic group, nation.

Another definition mentality, perhaps more complete and simple, these are views, assessments, values, norms of behavior and morality, mentality, and other nuances that characterize a particular group of people.

mentality is formed on the basis of the general historical, cultural, social and economic development of a particular community.

From the point of view of historians, mentality is"Ether of Culture", “this is, as it were, the air that all members of society breathe, that invisible all-encompassing environment in which they are immersed. From the point of view of social psychologists, mentality is a representation of culture about itself, its "collective unconscious" stereotypes of perception characteristic of the people's consciousness. This is the foundation revealed behind the environment, which historians and writers of past centuries called "spirit of nations".

Differences West and East

culture West- the culture of the countries of Europe and North America, embodying a dynamic lifestyle, rapid development. The West is different that any crimes are permissible if they bring good to their country. This setup "shine through" even in the English classic detective Sherlock Holmes. For West is characterized by scientific, technological, rational knowledge of the world.

Since ancient times, people and scientists have compared culture East and West culture. culture East- the culture of countries such as China, India, Japan, as well as other Asian states. Is different sustainability, tradition, inviolability. culture East historical development is characteristic, it is based on ancient customs, foundations. New trends are harmoniously integrated into the existing system. Human East merged with nature.

cultures East and West differ in religious, philosophical, time frames, scientific and other issues. Major cultural differences between East and West presented in the table.

Characteristics East

West

In philosophy, the idea of non-existence dominates. Truth cannot be expressed in words. True wisdom is demonstrated not in words, but by personal example. Creativity is the destiny of the gods and the sky The idea of being dominates. The desire to find exact words to express the truth. A wise person necessarily possesses the gift of persuasion. Creativity is the destiny of man and God

In religion Islam, Buddhism, pagan cults Christianity

In public life, the priority of religious and moral traditions and attitudes. Conservatism. Attitude towards nature is contemplative. The inseparability of man and nature, their unity. Reliance on the economy in solving social problems. Dynamism. Attitude towards nature - consumer. Man is opposed to nature, he commands it.

In art The inviolability of artistic traditions. Timeless, "eternal" theme. Different types of art are synthesized, "flow" one into another. Quick change and a huge variety of trends and styles. The theme and ideological content reflects a specific era. Artistic genres, forms, types are differentiated from each other

In science, the basis is life experience, intuition, observation. Great attention - to the development and application of practical knowledge Basis - experiment, mathematical methods. nomination fundamental theories

In behavior Strict adherence to behavioral norms. Passivity, contemplation. Respect for traditions and customs. Asceticism. Man as a representative of the whole. Diversity of norms of behavior in society. Activity, accelerated pace of life. Shattering traditions. Striving for the "benefits of civilization". Individualism, autonomy, uniqueness of personality.

Comparative analysis of cultures West and East showed that they belong to different civilizations, have a complex centuries-old history of existence. Different history, living conditions and production of material goods, religions, climatic conditions, etc. led to the formation of a different worldview, mentality and culture in general.

contradictions Eastern and Western civilization

IN sustainability of Eastern civilization and consists of the first feature East. West moves forward as if by jerks. And every jerk (Antiquity, Middle Ages, etc.) accompanied by the collapse of the old system of values, as well as political and economic structures. Development East, on the contrary, appears as a solid line. New trends here do not destroy the foundations of civilization.

East is very flexible, he is able to absorb and process many alien elements. Thus, according to one of the largest orientalists, the invasions of "barbarians" (nomadic tribes who lived on the borders of China and experienced a period of decomposition of the primitive communal system) not only did not destroy the Chinese state, but did not even interrupt its existence. And even in the northern part of the country, where "barbarian" kingdoms, these kingdoms very soon ceased to be "barbaric", turning into the same Chinese.

Moreover, unlike in Europe, East many religions coexisted, and even Islam, implacable in relation to Western Christianity, quite calmly got along with traditional Eastern beliefs.

Conclusion

Summing up the comparison West and East as two cultural areas and, summarizing all of the above, it should be noted that west and east these are two branches of human culture, two civilizations, two ways of life. They are far from each other in many respects, both cultural life and material values.

booming west with his desire for the new, breaking and destroying the old as an already used product of his life and a leisurely harmonious East, with his desire to contemplate the development of the world, with his attitude to nature and to everything natural as sacred and rejection of any interference in the essence of the development of life.

In the process of working on this topic, I discovered the differences between Western and Eastern cultures, according to which West and East confront each other. Their main differences are in the way of development of each culture, civilization, socio-economic structures, political way of life, spiritual culture, etc. The philosophy of a European and a person east are different. This can be seen in relation to nature, the environment. As mentioned earlier for the European nature: “not a temple, but a workshop” For Eastern the inhabitant of the world is a single whole together with himself.

But it is difficult for me to single out that culture and that civilization that would be better than another. These cultures are different, but on the other hand, complementing each other, they form a common world culture in which various values and values peacefully exist. mentalities and these two cultural areas are harmoniously connected.

4-6 points. Russian mentality.

The name of this category is arbitrary, since the Russians, of course, are representatives of the Western world. However, for the sake of the theory of "Eurasian civilization", this option should also be considered. The Russians are, as it were, bearers of the moral values of both the East and the West. Let me start by saying that I love the Arab East. Yes, yes, I love him. The Arabic language is unrealistically cool, I can't wait for my pension when I finally have time to finish learning it.
I wore women's closed Muslim clothes (out of curiosity), I liked it. These clothes make you change your step and make your walk, well, just extremely feminine. I really like wedding dresses, though for everyday life.
Yes I .. eh)

The East cannot possibly have a more loyal supporter than me.

That is why everything I say - I say without anger, from the standpoint of a keen understanding that the West is the West, the East is the East.

I know that the power of the East is immeasurable compared to us and they will sweep us away like microbes from the face of civilization.
The fact that I really love the Arab world is absolutely no reason to destroy Europe as a branch of human development, just like you do not let your flower bed be destroyed simply because the vital power of weeds is several orders of magnitude higher.
You can be called a racist about weeds all you want, but for some reason you continue to weed your flower bed ..

Now for the practical training.

Warm up.

Just to start with something simple, let's start with the bazaar, the easiest thing is to start to feel the difference.

I asked my friends how many times it is necessary to lower the price at the bazaar here so as not to be a tourist sucker.
I'm not greedy. It’s just that I’m not a tourist here, and you don’t need to treat me as a tourist.

Not immediately, but they admitted that it was necessary to lower the price by 15-20 times, but without a local assistant I would never succeed in this.
I got sad. Too much. Especially without free Arabic.
I decided to be realistic and aim for 10 times.

Regarding Europe, you yourself know - if you managed to bring down the price by 2 times, then the purchase was successful, if by three, your level is "God".
None of the Europeans will simply come to raise the price of their goods for a foreigner by 20 times simply because you assume that he should have this money.

Every day, like at work, I go to the market and learn how to bargain. The number of items purchased for training purposes is growing at an alarming rate, and I figure out who and when I will give them away. I started knocking down the price five times almost immediately, after suffering for a couple more days, I improved the result to seven, and then things stalled. I just can't seem to grasp the crap they're doing to get around me in our argument, and it pisses me off. NLP does not work on them.
...the suitcase announced that I could only buy one more large item. I usually knock down the price seven times, but this is my last! a chance not to fail my studies, and I continue to bargain.
The atmosphere is heating up. The owner throws a "silver" antique knife into the fight, which I briefly touched, and we start anew. The show goes to a new level, the owner gets into my dish with two legs and jumps in it, proving what an exceptional thing it is.
I already know this, but - at least at 9 raaaaz ...
Suddenly the owner turns purple and begins to bliss in some kind of Berber, apparently, to pour selected curses. I get frightened and I'm about to kick my butt, but suddenly a memory emerges from the depths of my foggy consciousness that only if the owner curses and curses you, only then can you be sure that you received a more or less fair price. He silently packs the dish, showing with all his appearance that I robbed him, and I snort angrily at the exit.
The next day, when I pass by (I went to the oils section, but bargaining there is blasphemy), he rushes to hug me and drags me to drink tea. Every day I explain that I will not buy anything else, and every day as a result we sit, drink freshly minted mint and chat about life.
A week later, he asks me if I'm ready to buy an ink bottle. I did my best not to look at the ancient Arabic inkwell, but the more I tried, the more I realized that its place was on my desk.
I don’t want to bargain, I already feel guilty for the museum-level object snatched from him on the cheap, I know that I will take an inkwell for any money and internally prepare for everything, but suddenly the price turns out to be what is called "without asking." I go to the shop opposite, buy all sorts of cheesecakes fried in honey, and this time the owner and I not only drink his tea, but also eat my buns.
I feel good. I feel like I'm at home.

1. Attitude towards children.

I laugh at naive people who believe that "refugees" run to save children.
In the Arab world, there is no such “trembling” over our children, the attitude towards children is more than calm.
Probably, exactly the same attitude was in Russia 150 years ago, when families had 10-12 children, and there was no way to take special care of them. "God gave, God took."
Arab families still have many children. A lot. With especially acute curiosity, I talked with people who have 7 children each (I did not manage to meet such parents with many children on the European continent). It's no joke to grow so many!
First of all, you see a huge parental fatigue and emotional burnout. I think that this defines the situation.
And you see very high demands on children - they are seen primarily as a tool for family survival. A three-year-old boy in the market helps his father lay out something there and tries to attract passers-by - and his father only praises him with restraint. Who was moaning about the fact that refugee children are forced to work from the age of 6? Do you think they were taken by the hand to figure skating at home before that? Oh, by the way, in simple local schools, children are still punished with a whip.
The complete absence of our sense of the significance and importance of children comes to the point that the parents themselves will ask the girl who dishonored the family to commit self-immolation. For good, for good. Otherwise, they will have to.
Again, there is no intention to condemn it. Those same 150 years ago, even in our country, a disgraced girl could have just drowned herself, anyway, she would not have had any more life. However, the question is, do those who traveled to Europe from Russia want to end up back in the same Russia, only 150 years ago?

I hope, after my explanation, it is more clear HOW children end up on leaky rafts on the high seas and how rare "refugee" fathers with professionally unhappy faces and small children in their arms for some reason climb to the forefront of clashes with the police.

A quick overview of the socio-cultural differences between the European and Eastern mentality

2. Lies.

Lying is the norm. It is so comprehensive that in fact you find yourself in some kind of unreality, like fairy tales of 1000 and one night, and you will doze under it, like that shah.
They can lie about everything. When the plumber comes, about the quality of the goods and, of course, about any services provided. The "best" guide may not know anything about the city at all, and the "best car" will definitely turn out to be a rare roar.
Sometimes they can lie just from the breadth of the soul. Well, I really want to help them, so they will promise just to please you (you were delighted, right? Well, it will be with you :), without having any opportunity in principle to fulfill the promise. Having made you "pleasant", they will be very satisfied with themselves and it will not even occur to them to experience any moral inconvenience. And sometimes they can lie out of the best of intentions, sincerely believing that some other solution will be better for you than the one you are going to take.

3. Theft

Theft is generally not considered something reprehensible. It is, rather, a certain norm of life, something from the "daring" section.
You can cut tourists' wallets, or you can steal panties from a neighbor's balcony.
So what if the neighbor can start yelling, anyway, tomorrow his son can steal your bike, and you will be quits.
In general, it is more like a kind of primitive communal consciousness, when everything belongs to one tribe, so the one who needs it more can use the thing.
They say that in the Emirates they chop off hands for theft, but I was not there, my mother did not allow me. She, like so many others, was extorted a large amount of money at the hotel on the road, and since I don’t understand how this differs from theft, I decided to refrain from such prohibitively ambiguous morality for the time being ..
And it's not about rich prosperous countries.

4. Hygiene.

To see and understand this in its entirety, everyone needs to live in the medina - the heart of the Arab city.
Of course, it is dangerous to walk in the medina alone, primarily because you will definitely get lost without any chance to get back, but you can take a guide.
The concept of hygiene does not exist there at all.
Slops are poured under the feet of passers-by, a live bird is gutted right on the same table where it was bought, and if the buyer does not take the offal, then they are thrown again at the feet of passers-by, and it’s good if dogs come to the rescue, but local suffocators most often do not can consume the volume of offal that is sent to the floor.
The tanning and dyeing industry also dumps its waste somewhere right on the street, which is why there are some white puddles of incomprehensible chemical origin.
And in many places, a rare, simply fantastic stench at the level of a gas chemical attack.
I'm not criticizing, this way of life is thousands of years old, but do you want to be in that millennium too?
About how beautiful and majestic the medina is (especially at sunset, when storks fly home from the fields), I will not tell you. Not this time.
Today I will tell you that no matter how many times you go outside the city wall to meet storks, your joy will be overshadowed by the sight of half a dozen men pissing on the thousand-year-old wall of their native city. No, not in some secluded place, but in front of a couple of dozen walking here same women and children. But you will not have time to be offended, because you will immediately see something even more shocking - a couple of men crouching "in a serious way". Everything is right there in plain sight.
The walls of the medina reach 20 meters thick. Though in full stench, but she endures.
What about the walls of your houses?

In the West, since childhood, people are instilled with a sense of guilt if you do not work (do not study, do not put away toys ...)
Subbotniks, when you have to do someone else's work for free and in your free time, are the highest form of imposing this feeling of guilt.
In the East, the only decent job for a man is trading.
But it is much more decent to sit all day in a coffee shop, sip coffee and bawl with other idlers of the same kind and look at passers-by.
I puzzled for a long time, due to what do they live, or what are all the rich heirs?
But then I realized that people live according to the Soviet "chord system" of earnings. I sold something to someone for 200% of the price - and again you can sit with respected people in cafes for a month.
If you try to explain there what a "subbotnik" is (just for the sake of interest), they will think that you are out of your mind.
But those who believe that a million workers have come to them have outlived their minds much more strongly.

And in conclusion, I bring to your attention a completely brilliant story (not mine), in which the author himself is not yet able to understand to what heights of foresight he rises.

Summary: In this question "who will collect whom, a whale or an elephant?" European culture and mentality will be mechanically replaced by the Arab world within 5-10 years if the new arrivals are not sent home.
You can pity them, you can shed a mean Dostoevsky tear, but the problem is that they will not pity you, because if this concept is in their mentality, then it definitely does not apply to you.

Therefore, ask yourself where the line is between pity and a sense of self-preservation, and read the rules of lifeguards.
The rescuer, for your information, must first make sure that nothing threatens his life.
