Oil Painting: Landscape and Oil Paintings for Beginners. Oil paintings for beginners in stages

20.04.2019

I decided to post a free lesson on how to create a bouquet of flowers with oil paints and a palette knife. Or in other words: master class how to draw flowers in oil painting and palette knife.

Before us is the final picture with spring flowers in a vase, that is, what we should get at the end of the lesson.

So let's get started. Let's take a canvas.

In this case, I used a canvas that was not stretched on a stretcher. But this does not affect the result at all. So it doesn’t matter whether the canvas is stretched on a stretcher or not - the main thing is not to look for excuses, but without fear to take up painting a vase of flowers with oil paints.

The picture shows that I took a brush and without thinking I painted over the entire canvas with oil paint. Moreover, oil paint should be well diluted in thinner or white spirit.

In the next picture, I decided to refine the background spot of our future flower masterpiece and added oil paint. What happened - you see for yourself.

Then I made a rough outline of our future vase and roughly drew the location of the green leaves of our bouquet of flowers. This is an approximate location - so you can safely experiment in this place.

This picture is not much different from the previous one. However, if we take a closer look, we will see that a glare has appeared on the vase (a bright spot in the upper part of the vase). There was also a shadow from the vase. From this, a pleasant impression was created that the vase "stands" on the plane of the table. I also decided to add the dark end of our table on which the vase is placed (at the very bottom of the picture).

The image of our future flower picture in a blue vase is already beginning to emerge. However, we do not stop there, we continue our free master class:.

What kind of flower picture can be without the flowers themselves - you say. And then the flowers begin to appear.

Moreover, before applying our flowers to the canvas, we first remove excess paint in those places. As you can see in the picture, we are removing some of the foliage. And we apply our future beautiful flowers.

In this picture of our master class, we have all the main flowers. And the picture already looks very nice 🙂

But we do not stop at this one and continue to draw further on our bouquet of flowers in a blue vase.

This picture shows how I palette knife I start adding the green leaves of our flower bouquet.

The main green leaves are drawn. Also, a few leaves fell on the table near our blue vase with a bouquet.

And finally the final stage. This is the final image of our flower bouquet in a blue vase. As you can see, I decided to add a few more flowers to our bouquet. Namely, 2 medium-sized yellow flowers and many small blue flowers. This caused more petals to attack the table. They also had to show 🙂

It seems that our today's master class has come to an end: How to paint an oil painting Bouquet of flowers with a palette knife.

I want to add one more image for you for clarity:

This is an enlarged fragment of our bouquet of flowers, or rather a yellow flower. As you can see oil paint is not to be spared in creating a painting.

And if I haven’t really tired you with my master class yet, then I will show you my working palette.

This is what my palette looked like when we completed our master class: How to draw a bouquet of flowers with oil.

Thanks for your interest in my lesson!

Hope to see you at my next painting master class.

A week ago, Yulia Skrypnik, editor of the MIF.Creativity platform, sent me a message: “Nastya, hello! Can you make an article next week with an exercise in Classical Painting Lessons? I answered that I would do it, and a thousand and one fears of a creative person spun in my head:

“I can't paint with oils. The last time I took oil paints in my hands a few years ago, and I can’t say that this experience was successful. Suddenly, nothing will work out for me at all and I will only spoil the canvas. ”

Pushing my fears aside, I began to study the book. Of course, in paper form, simply because its smell is inspiring in itself.

The book is divided into 4 chapters and each of them has several lessons. I planned to read the book to the last page and then choose which of the lessons I would do. However, there was so much new knowledge and inspiration that already on page 48 I took oil paints and thinner out of the box and climbed into the wardrobe in search of an old outdated T-shirt. And what about a t-shirt? Read more 😉

Lesson 2, which we will study with you, is devoted to imprimatura with wiping. I didn't know what it was either until I started reading the book, and that's okay.

Imprimatura(from Italian imprimatura - the first layer of paint) - a term used in painting: color tinting of the surface of an already finished white primer.

You have probably seen the work done using this technique.

Materials:

  • Drawing materials- paper and pencil, or charcoal if you are going to draw directly on the surface
  • primed surface- wooden surface or canvas
  • Palette
  • Oil paint natural umber. You can use natural sienna or earthy green - experiment with colors
  • Titanium white or quick-drying whites such as alkyd. They are convenient because they dry overnight.
  • Linseed oil(optional)
  • Cotton rag- a torn t-shirt will do (paper napkins are not recommended)
  • Large bristle brush

Above, I have listed the materials recommended by the author of "Lessons in Classical Painting" - Juliet Aristide. I didn't follow all of these instructions. The “same” material may not always be at hand; you should not give up creative experiments because of this.

First stage: staging a still life

Then it's time to start drawing. I did it immediately on canvas with a pencil, however, the author recommends first doing it on paper, and then transferring it with tracing paper. And this is good advice, because trying to use an eraser on a canvas is fraught with the formation of "dirt". I didn’t get hung up on the drawing either, because the purpose of this lesson is tonal underpainting.

Before proceeding with imprimatura with wiping, it is worth checking how the surface of the canvas or wood panel absorbs the paint. Some types of cheap acrylic primer hold the paint well, it will be difficult to wipe it to the surface color. If you come across such a primer, you can pre-coat the entire surface with a very thin layer of linseed oil.

And now the most interesting! It is necessary to cover the canvas with a thin layer, intensively shading the paint with a stiff, fairly large bristle brush. The author recommends not to be afraid of too dark a color and not to dilute the paint, because otherwise the layer will come out too thin, but I thought that my paints had been idle for a long time and had thickened, so I added a thinner, and this was really a mistake.

Tip from the book: If the picture is too large and complex to finish it in one session, the process can be broken down into stages (for example, the first half in one day, and the second half in another)

Let's start wiping. The outline of the pattern shows through the layer of oil, so it's not difficult. It is necessary to constantly intercept the rag in order to use clean parts. For large areas, it is convenient to wipe the paint with your index finger, and for small elements, I wrapped a rag around an orange stick.

The wiped underpainting can be finished after step 4, but if you add dark and light accents, the work takes on a more finished look. Therefore, using the glazing method, I added white and deepened the shadows with a dark color.

Work is ready! Several obvious mistakes were made, jeans were stained with paint, but most importantly, an incredible pleasure was received from conquering their fears.

I used to be afraid of books about classical painting, it seemed to me that they were created at least for students of specialized universities, but it turned out that this was not at all the case.

I urge you not to be afraid! Try something new, go beyond the usual materials and techniques.

Hello!

Today we will write poppies - very beautiful and spectacular flowers. Let's write poppies in a not quite standard way. We use only a palette knife, a rag and fingers.

Poppies are not difficult to paint, even if you are new to oil painting. Painting flowers with oil using a palette knife is quite simple. Perhaps you have a question, how to register all the exquisite details of delicate flowers without thin brushes? This is exactly what we will demonstrate now.

It is best to write flowers or any other subjects using some kind of visual material: photography or nature, for example, a bouquet of flowers on the table. The main thing is that you really like what you are going to depict on canvas, since you will have to spend some time with nature, study it, observe, admire ...

Painting process

Erase Sketch

With a rag we wipe the places where flowers and poppy buds will be written. If the paint does not rub off well, you can soak a cloth in the solvent. Erasing, removing paint from a background, is like sketching. At this stage, the marking of the main details of our future composition takes place.

poppies flowers

The poppy flower is like a bowl.

When we write these “poppy cups”, we imagine how light falls on each, where there will be more shaded areas, and where there will be the most illuminated ones.

Poppies with oil paints on canvas

The main color for writing any flower will be cadmium red light. When we paint the shadow part of the flower, we mix a little brown into the cadmium red. It all depends on what measure of "darkness" you want to show. When we write the petals lit by the sun, we add white or cadmium yellow, or you can do a little of both.

How to learn to draw roses with paints

To show the rounded shape of the flowers, we draw with a palette knife " rounding" movements in the form of flowers and petals.

Details

After we have outlined the flowers, their shaded and illuminated sides with paints, we proceed to refine the details of the fragile and delicate poppy flowers.

  • With the sharp edge of the tip of the palette knife, we outline the thin edges of the petals;
  • With the edge of a palette knife, you can remove paint that has spread beyond the designated limits of a flower, stem, petal, etc.
  • It is convenient to smooth the paint with a round palette knife, giving the applied layer a special evenness and smoothness.

Centers of poppy flowers, we outline in brown - burnt umber. We apply the paint with the plane of a palette knife or with a finger, with dipping movements. Using this method, the uneven structure of the middle of the poppy flower is drawn in a matter of seconds.

On top of the dark color of burnt umber, we apply droplets of white - showing white dust particles on the stamens of flowers, we do this with even lighter movements.

"Cozy summer courtyard": oil painting in the style of Provence

In the process of all work, you can refine the contours of flowers, stems, leaves, remove what didn’t work out and emphasize especially good moments, add more light or shadow.

This technique of painting poppy flowers in oil is very eloquent and quite simple. With a little practice, beautiful flowers will be obtained with one stroke of the palette knife, and you can paint an oil painting with poppy flowers in a few hours, or even in one hour.

I wish you good luck and creative inspiration!

Have you been dreaming of trying to paint with oil paints for a long time, but don't know what you need for this? We've put together 28 tips to help beginners figure things out. We wish you inspiration!

1. The main set of oil paints consists of the following colors: Crimson Alizarin, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ocher, Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Martian Black. From these shades it is possible to create any other color.

2. Buy white with a margin. When mixing paints, it will be used up very quickly.

3. For an enjoyable painting experience, spare no expense for quality oil paints and tools.

4. For the first drawing experience, it is enough to buy a couple of brushes of different types. For example, you can purchase round, flat and bristle brushes in different sizes.

5. You can use old rags and jars to clean your brushes.

6. It is not necessary to buy a palette for paint, it is enough to use a board or cardboard.

7. There is a rule in oil painting: thick to liquid. For the first layer, buy a solvent. Apply a thick layer on top of it.

8. Draw in a well lit area with natural light. Otherwise, the colors may then differ from those that they seemed in a specific light.

9. The easel is adjusted according to your height and position so that you can sit without discomfort and labor.

10. Oil paints are difficult to remove from fabric. So wear things that you don't mind.

11. To begin with, a pencil or charcoal sketch should be placed on the canvas. Build a composition.

12. To make the drawing realistic, determine where the light source will be. So you can easily depict darkened and illuminated areas, shadows, penumbra, highlights.

13. Light color is obtained by adding white, shadow - by adding black.

14. To make the paint not so thick, mix it with turpentine or linseed oil. Add them to the paint slowly to get exactly the consistency you need.

15. Take your time to apply the second layer. Let the paint dry. Usually it is 3 days.

16. Learn to mix colors. Add layers of paint so that adjacent paints can be mixed with a flat brush. The smear should go in the direction of mixing.

17. To make the glaze, you will need 1/3 linseed oil, turpentine and oil varnish. Mix them and you get a transparent color that can be mixed with other paints to make a glaze.

18. To create the effect of a more transparent figure, you can use a brush with natural bristles. Apply dots to the canvas with a brush at an angle of 90 degrees.

19. To create a thick layer of paint, use a palette knife. Smear the paint with a knife on the canvas. This is the best tool for conveying movement and drawing the landscape.

20. Paints dry for about 3 days. Take this time to critically evaluate the drawing. You can correct the picture or completely erase the details.

22. Clean brushes with turpentine and an old rag. Rub off the paint until the water runs off the brush and runs clear. If the paint dries on the brush, then the tool is unlikely to save anything.

23. Paintings take 3 or more months to dry. Until then, leave your creation in a well-ventilated place where no one will disturb the painting.

24. After your painting is dry, it should be varnished. You will protect your picture and colors from fading.

25. Avoid using Ivory Black for backgrounds as it takes a very long time to dry.

26. Linseed oil is not used for light colors. Otherwise, they will turn yellow.

27. In order to wipe the oil paint off your hands, use a different oil (baby or olive). Wipe off the paint with a cloth and do not wash your hands until you have completely wiped off the paint.

28. Apply colors to the intended places, and then mix them with a brush until you get a gradation that satisfies you.

The greatest masterpieces were painted with oil paints, it was they who gave, and still give, their preference to masters of painting and famous artists. But working with such paints has its own unique features and peculiar differences in techniques. Therefore, many novice artists have some difficulties in writing pictures. In this article, we will try to figure out how to paint with oil paints, what they are, and also consider several techniques in oil painting.

In specialized stores, oil paints are presented in a large assortment, there are many brands under which such art products are sold. What is special about oil paints?

The composition includes various pigments: mineral, organic, synthetic and earth. The same components are present in the composition of other types of paints, be it acrylic or watercolor.

Oil paints differ from others in the binding component - this is linseed oil. It is it that gives the brightness and saturation of the color, and it is because of it that such paints dry for a long time. But on the other hand, a fresh layer of oil applied to the canvas lends itself to change, that is, you can repeatedly adjust the drawing and apply new layers on top of the old ones.

Another feature of oil paints is that they are diluted not with water, but with a special solvent, which is also used as vegetable oil. Such a thinner is sold in art stores, as are the paints themselves.

What types are there?

In each specialized store you can find three types of paints:

  • Highly artistic. These are paints that are purchased by professionals in their field. They consist only of high-quality components, therefore they have a high cost. But for a good picture, good paints are needed, which over time will not lose their luster and will not change color.

  • Studio. They are in no less demand than the first option, they behave well on canvas. Suitable for both professional and beginner artists.

  • Sketchy. They are more suitable for beginners in the art business, since for a low cost you can buy a sufficient amount of paints and choose your own application technique.

Manufacturers of oil paints are located in many countries of the world. Experienced artists have already chosen for themselves those options that are suitable for work. Many combine their kits from different companies, which is also acceptable.

Still oil paints are divided into transparent and opaque. The latter are denser in structure and therefore do not let light pass through them. Each package must have special markings. For example, the designation "*" indicates the durability and durability of paint on canvas. The more such symbols on the paint, the longer the finished canvases will last. The best paints last over 100 years.

The symbol in the form of a filled black square means that the paint is not transparent, if it is half, then it is translucent.

Pigments that give the paint a particular color can be divided into organic and inorganic. The first type gives brighter shades, and the second natural colors. With a good ratio of pigments, manufacturers achieve beautiful and high-quality shades.

For the production of oil paints, imported linseed oil is usually used, since flax growing outside the territory of the Russian Federation has unique properties, due to which art paints have their own unique quality characteristics.

About drawing techniques

Preparation for creativity does not take much time, especially since in modern art stores you can buy everything you need for work. Already stretched and primed canvases can be found in any size - from the smallest to the largest.

The picture painted with oil paints looks very impressive. The strokes applied by the artist look as if they are separate from each other. Many people think that oil painting is a fairly simple activity, but this is absolutely not the case. Let's try to figure out how to learn how to draw with oil paints.

Each master has his own drawing technique, which is distinguished by its own characteristics. The standard ones are:

  • multilayer overlay;
  • alla prima - one layer.

The implementation of a multi-layer overlay is a very complex technique in which you need to be as careful as possible, knowing all the properties and characteristics of oil paints. It is necessary to work in the same style and not dilute the paint in order to finish the job faster. The diluted composition may appear on the canvas more matte and dull than the rest of the details. With this technique, not one or two tubes of paint will take the whole job.

When applying one layer, you must remember that the paint can shrink, and cracks will appear in the picture. Artists in this case let the first layer dry completely and paint the second one. Many craftsmen use this technique more often, since the material consumption is lower.

Basic Rules

So, we are learning to paint with oil. What rules must be followed:

  1. A prerequisite for writing any picture is light. Only the right lighting can achieve the desired effect.
  2. Artists begin their work with the outline of the future painting. Charcoal works well for this. It can be easily wiped off with a rag and redraw the failed element. The lines that are drawn in charcoal must be fixed on the canvas.
  3. In the picture, all the tones and shadows are obtained by constantly mixing colors. You need to clearly understand what colors need to be mixed in order to achieve one or another shade.
  4. Masters begin to paint their picture with the brightest elements of the composition. That is, first you need to select the darkest element and the lightest. Then you can start all the other details.
  5. Once the basic sketch is done, you can move on to drawing. But do not focus on one element. It is necessary to gradually engage the entire canvas.
  6. Artists recommend taking white in much larger quantities than paints of other colors, since they are used more often.
  7. The finished painting dries within three days, so you can make adjustments on the canvas the next day after the work is completed. The missing place can be removed with a spatula. This will not harm either the canvas or the whole picture as a whole. The work will remain the same.
  8. For novice craftsmen and amateurs, it is unprofitable to use professional paints, since beginners will mostly draw sketches.
  9. For oil paints, it is necessary to prepare a special place for storage. What you need for painting (paints, brushes, canvas, palette) should be in one place, and they can be taken and used as soon as necessary.
  10. After the canvas has completely dried, it is impossible to wipe the surface with a dirty cloth and touch it with your hands. This can harm the appearance of the overall pattern.

Step by step painting with oil paints looks something like this.

How to draw your first paintings will be prompted by artists who can boast of a large number of canvases. There are certain painting techniques for oil painting on canvas. A novice artist needs to start working under the supervision of an experienced teacher. As soon as the written drawings begin to turn out, and your own methods are revealed, you can paint with oil yourself.

On what to write with oil paints and how to start drawing, sellers of art supply stores can also tell you. There are many schools where people of all ages learn to paint. Learn to draw only from good masters of painting!
