Cool ideas are not difficult to draw. What can you draw when you're bored? What else can you draw

29.05.2019

Alexander Bogatov, an illustrator and graphic designer from Izhevsk, shared his methods for finding great ideas for illustrations and graphic design.

My name is Sasha Bogatov - illustrator, graphic designer from Izhevsk. developing my own project Daily sketchups- daily illustrations, where the emphasis is on working with meanings, mixing techniques and styles, tools.

There is no time to wait for a muse when you are leading a similar project and working at the same time. Therefore, I delved into the search for methods for generating ideas. As a result, I have a certain list of techniques that I use often. Generating ideas is not magic. This is a skill that can be pumped. You can download, for example, using the methods listed below.

The article does not contain the following techniques: brainstorming and its variations; six Edward De Bono hats; TRIZ. Much has been written about them, it makes no sense to retell.

1. Idea generator generator

Victor Melamed, head of the illustration course at the British Higher School of Design, posted on Facebook about inventing generators to generate images.

Description and mechanism of work. Inside the generator: current, transformer, tester. Tok - What inspires you: apple ponytails, raccoon tails, horror movie posters, English porcelain. Transformer - transformation of source material into plots, ideas. Tester - criteria emerging from the requirements of the tasks by which we will evaluate the generated ideas.

“A good generator should produce different ideas within the same logic and not burn out before the fifth idea. A good idea is not only memorable and intriguing, but also triggers the plastic development of the picture.

V. Melamed.

Types of generators:
● Transformer - transforming a situation into a plot
● Inverter - objects are swapped
● Collider - when there are two current sources
● Randomizer - random constants
● Incubator - when you need to detail a fictional world
● …

You can always come up with generators with your own parameters, go for it! A table with generators is attached to the post. The generators were described by the students of the Melamedov course using the examples of their favorite illustrators, as well as their own developments.

Transformer; current No. 1 - people, animals, objects; current №2 - contrast of sizes; tester - absurd plausibility. Illustration  - Brad Holland, description of the generator -  Alyona Belyakova.

inverter; current - any objects and animals; a transformer - attribute or part of a creature or object is alienated from it and used for other purposes; tester - unusual and funny. Illustration - Brock Davis, description of the generator - Victor Melamed.

Collider; current №1 - photos of graduates, any genres of everyday photography; current No. 2 - faces from horror; transformer - collision; tester - mocking horror. Illustration  - Charles Burns, description of the generator  - Anastasia Sukharkova.

Randomizer; current - five words beginning with the same two letters; transformer - combining into a plot.Illustration - Wren Mcdonald; illustration context - troll tromping tropical trombone troopers trolley; description of the generator - unknown.

Incubator; current No. 1 - everyday situations, current No. 2 - animals; transformer - the world of children and intelligent robots representing animals; tester - warmth, peace, surrealism.Illustration - Shaun Tan (Rules of summer), description of the generator - Anastasia Sukharkova.

Transformer; current - photos of people, any objects and animals; transformer - we make up a single object from two photographs according to the principle of harmony of form; tester - weird, funny, smart. Peeped at Stephen Mcmennamy, illustration Daily sketchups

2. Mind map

Description of the method. A mental map or mind mapping is a technique for visualizing thinking. Maps are needed to develop topics, search for ideas, systematize knowledge.

Working mechanism. Take a sheet of paper or launch an online map editor, write the main topic or word in the middle of the sheet, draw branches with associations from the topic. Someone writes only in words, someone adds simple drawings, icons.

This is what the cards look like:

Screenshot from online map editor Mindmeister

One of the cards in my notebook

Time management card. MindTools

My Mapping Approach:

  1. Analysis of own associations related to the topic;
  2. I expand the list of words in the map using associative dictionaries: sociation.org, wordassociations.ru, www.slovesa.ru;
  3. I am typing the main words and associations in Pinterest and Google image, looking for images and words in pictures. In Pinterest, I sort through the tags, add the words #illustration or #graphic_design to the topic.

Services for working with cards:

  • Mindmeister.com is a nice online map editor. I use it. There are limitations in the free version;
  • Mind42.com  -  haven't tried it, but love it from mappers;
  • Mindnode.com  - map editor for Apple technology.

More details about the method are written on Habrahabr in the Mind Mapping article, or how to make your brain work better.

3. A systematic approach to associations

The methodology is similar to the mind mapping method. Found on the blog of Nate Williams, an American illustrator, in this entry.

Brief translation of the article with the mechanism of work:
1. You have a topic, a task. Describe the topic in 2-4 main words. For example, the theme - "empowering teachers through technology". Key words: empowerment, teacher, technology.

2. We select associations for each word:

3. We connect one association from each column into sentences:

  • crane operated teacher, lowers light bulbs in the head of a student;
  • student climbs up DNA ladder to draw light bulbs on the board;
  • students and teachers go to bridge from computers to the moon.

We visualize the proposals:

"Bridge to Another World" Students and teachers cross the bridge of computers to the moon.

"Riding on the head". The teacher's head is a vehicle that takes students to new knowledge with the help of technology / computer

"Explosion of knowledge". Computer, portal metaphor

"Super Teacher". The teacher in a heroic pose (standing at the computer) inspires students

The illustration is ready!

4. Tropes and stylistic figures

Description of the method. The whole world is a text, and it consists of signs and semantic units. Semiotics deals with the study of signs and meanings, the rules of communication. V. Melamed popularizes this method in illustration. An illustration is a text, which means that the rules of speech, stylistic figures of speech apply in it.

“A good illustration can be retold in words”

V. Melamed

Working mechanism. Recall literary tropes: metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, epithet, hyperbole, dysphemism, pun, litote, simile, paraphrase, allegory, personification, irony, pathos, sarcasm, euphemism, anaphora, gradation, antithesis, omission, parallelism, inversion. Find the definitions on Google if you forgot.

There are two options for working with this method. First, reinforce your idea with tropes. The second option is to choose paths that will create a visual metaphor for your idea.

Implementation of trails in graphics:

The metaphor of a flight of fancy is revealed through an elegant comparison of an airplane wing and a book. Jungho Lee, illustration for book "Promenade"

Sarcasm. Who controls whom, who is the master of his life?Pawel Kuczynski, pawelkuczynski.com

Hyperbole, pun. Tuba weight exaggeration and word play. Matt Blease, mattblease.com

Litota, pun, comparison. Timberland bus and boots on the way. Daily sketchups

Gradation, inversion, hyperbole, pun. The professor synthesized a giant mosquito, which he tries to kill without seeing that he has already increased in size. Who's catching who now? Brecht Vandenbroucke, brechtvandenbroucke.blogspot.com

Antithesis, metonymy. A union of cheerful and boring, plain and colorful.Broke Davis, itistheworldthatmadeyousmall.com

5. Using a different style, technique, material

Description of the method and mechanism of work. The fact is that the choice of material, style, tool may already be a solution to the problem.

“There was a lot of time in Britain to make us do things with our own hands. Because often the right choice of tool is already the solution to the problem, ”- Vladimir Ayuev in an article about training designers in Britain.

Besides hands, there are wonderful tools that we miss out on in the digital environment. Try to work with 3D graphics, video, look towards interactive installations, animation, sound design, mapping, web illustration. Ownership of tools expands your language in which you speak with the viewer, customer, audience. Again, the choice of tool can suggest a solution to a problem, reinforce a visual metaphor, or become its backbone.

Interaction of new technologies and the world of illustration:

1. The extraordinary news resource "My friend, you are a transformer" published a special project with cool web illustrations: taxi.batenka.ru.

2. The Mars Center in Moscow presented this year an experimental exhibition "Metaforms". Well-known street art artists of Russia have transferred their works to the virtual environment. You can see the work done with the help of virtual reality helmets.

6. Synesthesia

Description of the method. Synesthesia - the ability to perceive the world with the senses, while using the description of sensations from the world of other senses. Examples: color hearing, perceiving certain colors when seeing letters, the smell of a Seven Nation Army song by The white stripes, the taste of The Simpsons.

V. Melamed talks about how to include synesthesia in the arsenal of creative tools in the lecture of the same name.

The mechanism of work on the example of synesthesia analysis:

1. Hearing. How to make an illustration rustle, buzz, rattle like an old refrigerator?

2. Smell. Can a picture smell sweet like a rose, or stink like sweat?

4. Touch. Is it possible to convey tactile sensations visually, to feel silk or turtle skin?

Prickly illustration, moss is felt somewhere. Henry McCausland

5. Muscular feeling or kinesthesia. Can a picture destroy your vestibular apparatus, make you dizzy?

Imagine yourself in the place of one of the girls, it becomes silly. Weightlessness. Javi Aznarez, javiaznarez.blogspot.com

6. Sense of time. How about feeling the fluidity of time in a picture?

We freeze, we wait. How long will this mockery in pink colors last? Brad Holland bradholland.net

7. Personification of the theme

Description of the method. We give our idea a human face.

Working mechanism. Imagine that our idea, theme, product, main word, text - person. We give this person a character, determine his properties, manners, what he is wearing, what he loves and hates. Next, we start looking for a visual solution that would describe our object.

Comedy personification of Mac and PC images

I did not find the roots of the method, but the idea was overheard in the lecture " brand typography» Mikhail Shishkin from Shishki branding agency.

Brand - image in the head of the audience. He speaks by means of visual communications in a certain language, tone with the audience. Language and tone - used images, typography, font component, colors. The brand language is formed at the research stage, where a detailed portrait of the addressee, the audience is drawn up. The presentation contains examples of the selection of fonts based on the selected properties of a person's character and natural associations.

Drawing is a great opportunity to get rid of boredom, the monotony of every day, as well as develop creative abilities. This applies not only to children, but also to adults. To draw any object or landscape, it is not at all necessary to skillfully use a pencil or a brush. The main thing is that the process itself should be interesting. It is enough to stock up on the necessary supplies, connect your imagination and start with the simplest strokes that will grow into the whole picture.

Favorite characters from fairy tales, cartoons and TV series help children to get rid of boredom. Their kids draw with great pleasure. They do this by looking at available samples or from memory. It all depends on the ability of the child.

The prerogative of the boys are all kinds of cars, tanks, locomotives, rockets, motorcycles. Girls are more interested in drawings depicting dolls, flowers, vases. If the child is fed up with such drawing, then adults should join the company and offer to draw two identical drawings, and then find 5 differences in them.

What to draw for adults when bored? You can portray a pet, if you have one, or a fictional animal that you like more than others. It is no less interesting to draw a favorite object on paper or the weather outside the window. Perhaps it will be a face with a smile to cheer up.

A good solution would be a celebrity figure on paper if the artist has good drawing skills. In order not to be bored, it is recommended to depict some bright event from your life. Better yet, draw your dreams. Perhaps someday they will come true.

Drawing by interests

When a person is bored, he usually turns to his favorite thing. Even if drawing is not your hobby, turning it into a hobby is not difficult - the main thing is to draw what you love. If you are a lover of flowers, no matter what - indoor or garden, draw flowers.

It can be a flower meadow, a bouquet of peonies, a lilac bush - everything that you see around or imagine in your imagination. Such a picture will be a wonderful decoration of the room.

Those who prefer animals to nature and flowers can paint them. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds - create a portrait of your pet. This painting is sure to take center stage in your home.

Mastering new techniques

When bored, drawing lovers can take up the development of new artistic techniques and techniques. Have you always dreamed of drawing anime, or maybe you were attracted to products made using the batik technique? It's time to try your hand at these techniques. Perhaps someone was attracted by miniature painting, painting in the style of folk crafts. When you are bored, you can start sketching your future creations.

Drawing with children

Most often, the question of what to draw when bored is asked by parents. Young children need to constantly be occupied with something: play, walk, draw. That's just drawing and can be a salvation for young dads and moms. If a child is carried away, he will completely forget about boredom, and will create with pleasure.

What can you draw with children? There are countless options here. You can draw heroes of your favorite fairy tales and cartoons with your children and even put them all together in one picture. You can make a real cartoon comic with your child by drawing several scenes in a row. Children's drawings will decorate the room, and your child will be proud of his ability to draw.

The drawing process involves not only the use of colored pencils or paints with brushes, you can draw with children with multi-colored crayons or paints using your palms and fingers.

Drawing with children is useful both for the children themselves and for the parents. This is a great option for spending time together when both small and large are bored.

Creation of ornaments

Probably, each of you remember how at school he painted the margins of his mathematics notebooks with ornaments. For some it was a long time ago, for others it was just recently. In fact, the creation of ornaments is a whole science, which you can do when you are bored.

Initially, this requires a minimum of materials: a checkered sheet and colored pencils or felt-tip pens. You can create ornaments from geometric or floral elements, paint them in the same range or combine several opposing colors.

Where would such an ornament come in handy later? Needlework lovers, maybe there are some among your friends or relatives, they can easily transfer such ornaments to embroidery, a patchwork product, a beaded or leather bracelet, they are used when sewing clothes or knitting. Finally, the idea of ornament can be used later in creating the interior of your apartment.

Drawing by numbers

Drawing pictures by numbers is a great idea for those who are bored. Absolutely everyone can draw such pictures, they will turn out even for those who do not have the ability for artistic art. Paintings by numbers come in different sizes - there are small ones, there are quite impressive ones, there are whole sets of such paintings - when you need to color each one, and then place them side by side on the wall, getting one image.

Drawing by numbers is suitable for both adults and children. For young artists, there are paintings with cartoon characters and animals - this is a kind of large coloring book, which is a pleasure to color.

For adults, there are paintings by numbers in the form of beautiful landscapes - autumn, summer and city. Coloring such a picture, a sunny embankment of the Italian coast or a magnificent autumn landscape with a house by the lake. Separately, such paintings are made for lovers of animals, flowers, street art - each of you will be able to choose an option to your liking.

Sherlock and Prince Myshkin

How would you answer, for example, the following question: “Imagine that two of your favorite characters from different books, films or series met. How and what can they talk about? Write a dialogue.

This can be done, for example, like this:

Sherlock plays a gentle melody on the violin.

Prince Myshkin(thoughtfully): "Beauty will save the world."

Sherlock:"Boredom! You're stupid".

Prince Myshkin:“I must tell you that before I really was so unwell that I really was almost an idiot; but now I've recovered a long time ago... Is it possible to smoke here? That’s why I’m used to it, but I haven’t smoked for three hours.”

Sherlock:“Try a nicotine patch. Kislovodsk or Switzerland?

Prince Myshkin:“Switzerland, you guessed it. Whose portrait is this? I see a lot of suffering in that face."

Sherlock: This is Mrs Hudson. Her husband was sentenced to death three years ago. I was able to help her."

Prince Myshkin:"Did you save him from the death penalty?"

Sherlock:"On the contrary, he accelerated it."

Prince Myshkin:“Such flour! Soul abuse! Isn't it horror? No, that's not possible."

Sherlock:“He deserved it. And it was fun, by the way.”

Prince Myshkin:"Crazy!"

Sherlock: « No, a highly active sociopath».

Write about a person who loves yellow

Here's what you might end up with:

An easel with work in progress stood in the middle of the room. The picture, although it was not finished, shocked to the core. It seemed impossible to look at these fabulous yellow elephants, golden firebirds, a sunny fairy with a kind, unearthly face - and not experience happiness.

It was not only the picture that was amazing in the room. Lemon wallpaper, a mustard-coloured sofa, a canary table, and an amber chandelier dazzled everyone who entered. There were many visitors that day.

The black suits and dull pale faces contrasted strangely with all the objects, and the hostess of the room would probably laugh if she saw this discrepancy.

On that day, she was presented with many yellow bouquets, which could no longer please her.

Fairy tale in reverse

« Retell any fairy tale from the point of view of a minor character » - such a task for those who love fairy tales:

“The day did not portend anything remarkable until the planet was attacked ...” - and this is for those who love fantastic stories:

And some last ideas

1. You meet a girl who can close her eyes and see the entire universe. Tell about her.

2. Try to fit the whole life of a person in one sentence.

3. Take an article from a fresh newspaper. Write down ten words or phrases that caught your eye. Using these words, write a poem that begins: "What if..."

4. Your cat dreams of world domination. She figured out how to switch bodies with you.

5. Write a story that begins like this: “The odd thing started when Fred bought a house for his miniature pigs…”

6. Explain to a gold miner in 1849 how e-mail works.

7. An unknown force threw you inside the computer. You need to get out.

8. Choose any item on the desk (pen, pencil, eraser, etc.) and write him a note of thanks.

Creativity, like a dog, must be constantly engaged, otherwise it will run wild and run away into the forest. Start creating right now.

All children love to draw. But sometimes the child does not turn out the way he wants. Or maybe he doesn’t have enough familiar ways to express himself? Then you can inspire him to experiment with different techniques, among which there is sure to be a favorite. After that, your child will probably want to invent something new.
Patterns from dots

First, draw the simplest squiggle. Then, using a cotton swab and paints (gouache or acrylic), we make intricate patterns, as the soul lies. Paints are best pre-mixed and slightly diluted with water on the palette.

Frottage

Since childhood, a technique familiar and loved by many. We put an object with a slightly protruding relief under a sheet of paper and paint over it with pastel, chalk or an unsharpened pencil.

Foam prints

Having dipped a sponge in thick gouache, a child can draw landscapes, bouquets of flowers, lilac branches or animals.

Blotography

One option: drip paint on a sheet and tilt it in different directions to get some kind of image. Second: the child dips the brush into the paint, then puts the inkblot on a sheet of paper and folds the sheet in half so that the inkblot is printed on the second half of the sheet. Then he unfolds the sheet and tries to understand who or what the drawing looks like.

Other drawings using the clasography method can be viewed

Hand and foot prints

It's simple: you need to dip your foot or palm in paint and make an imprint on paper. And then use your imagination and finish drawing a couple of details.

You can see more about the method of drawing with palms

Paint Patterns

For such an application, you need to apply a thick layer of paint on paper. Then, with the back end of the brush, scratch patterns on the still wet paint - a variety of lines and curls. When dry, cut out the desired shapes and stick on a thick sheet.

Fingerprints

The name speaks for itself. It is necessary to paint the finger with a thin layer and make an imprint. A couple of strokes with a felt-tip pen - and you're done!

Monotype

A drawing is applied to a flat smooth surface (for example, glass). Then a sheet of paper is applied, and the print is ready. To make it more blurry, a sheet of paper must first be wetted. When everything is dry, you can add details and outlines if desired.

Grattage

The highlight of the work is that the drawing needs to be scratched. A sheet of cardboard is tightly shaded with spots of multi-colored oil pastels. Then black gouache must be mixed on a palette with soap and painted over the entire sketch. When the paint is completely dry, scratch the pattern with a toothpick.

air paints

To prepare the dye, you need to mix a tablespoon of "self-rising" flour, a few drops of food coloring and a tablespoon of salt. Add a little water to the consistency of thick sour cream and mix well. The paint can be placed in a confectionery syringe or in a small bag. Tie tightly and cut corner. We draw on paper or ordinary cardboard. We place the finished drawing for 10-30 seconds in the microwave at maximum mode.

"Marble" paper

We paint over a sheet of paper with yellow acrylic paint. When it dries completely, paint over again with diluted pink paint and immediately cover with cling film. The film needs to be crumpled and gathered into folds, since it is they who will create the desired pattern for us. We wait for complete drying and remove the film.

water painting

Draw a simple shape in watercolor and fill it with water. Until it dries, we put colored blots on it so that they mix with each other and form such smooth transitions.

Prints of vegetables and fruits

Vegetable or fruit should be cut in half. Then you can cut some kind of pattern on it or leave it as it is. We dip into the paint and make prints on paper. For prints, you can use an apple, potato, carrot or celery.

Leaf prints

The principle is the same. We smear the leaves with paint and make prints on paper.

Drawings with salt

If you sprinkle salt on a still wet watercolor drawing, it will be saturated with paint and, when dried, will create a grainy effect.

Brush instead of brush

Sometimes, for the sake of experiment, it is worth trying something unexpected. For example, a household brush.

Ebru or water painting

We need a container of water. The main requirement is that its area coincides with the area of a sheet of paper. You can use an oven roaster or a large tray. You will also need oil paints, a solvent for them and a brush. The point is to create patterns with paint on water, and then dip a piece of paper in them. How it's done: www.youtube.com

cracked wax effect

With wax pencils, draw an image on thin paper. In our case, a flower. The background must be fully shaded. We crumple well and then straighten the sheet with the pattern. We paint over it with dark paint so that it enters into all the cracks. We wash the drawing under the tap and dry it. If required, smooth with an iron.

About drawing on crumpled paper you can see

Offset cardstock prints

We cut the cardboard into small strips, about 1.5 × 3 cm. Dip the edge of a piece of cardboard in paint, press it vertically against the paper and evenly shift it to the side. Wide lines will be obtained, from which the pattern is created.

Cam prints

For such a drawing, the child will have to clench his hands into fists. Then dip the back of your fingers into the paint and make prints, creating the desired shape. Fish and crabs can be created using fingerprints.

Many people admit that they love to draw, although they do not know how to do it. Through drawing, you can express your mood, feelings, attitude to some events. Even if the result of the efforts is not a full-fledged picture, but only a funny and funny sketch, the creative process itself relaxes and triggers special mechanisms of joy in the brain. At the same time, it is not always easy to pick up ideas for drawings, because it seems to an amateur or a beginner that nothing truly beautiful will work anyway.

To draw, it is not necessary to have an education or talent as an artist. A simple desire and imagination is enough to start, and then the process will go easily and freely. It is important not to scold yourself and not limit your own creativity. Indeed, in most cases, it is not the result that matters, but the process itself.

Where and when to draw

In addition to the fact that good ideas for drawings do not always come to mind, another problem arises - where to draw. A large white sheet of paper can be intimidating with its size and seriousness of approach, so there is a stupor of fantasy. But a notebook or a personal diary encourages a flight of thoughts and emotions, which are often expressed in small sketches or sketches. It is not so difficult for many girls to find original ideas for LD, the drawings of which reflect their mood or dreams.

You can draw in a diary or LD during meetings, in pairs at the university, even in the subway. And if fantasy does not allow you to come up with something small, but original, you can borrow ideas for drawings from those who have succeeded in this matter.

How to draw

A simple pencil is a versatile tool that allows you to bring the most simple and fun ideas for drawings to paper. But you can draw for the soul not only with a simple pencil. Often an appropriate tool for this is a regular pen, especially if a flight of fancy visited a novice artist while working or studying. Of course, the peculiarity of this tool is that the drawing cannot be erased, which means that any mistakes or flaws will remain on paper forever.

Drawing with colored pens or pencils is more interesting and brighter, but they are not always at hand. Such instruments are more suitable for children, whose imagination can surprise any adult. They like to often change the colors of pencils, giving ordinary things non-standard shades.

What to draw

If there is absolutely no idea what to draw, but you want to immerse yourself in the creative process, you can use several options to awaken your own imagination. There are several ways to find a creative spark:

  • you can take an explanatory dictionary, open any page and draw the first word that catches your eye;
  • look around, find any simple object in your immediate reach and try to depict it outside the box, for example, half a sofa and its insides, an unusually shaped TV, a living wall clock, etc.

Sometimes it seems that all ideas for drawings are over, but there is no desire to depict banal things. In fact, the world around us is full of unusual angles and options, and an individual vision will help you find your own plot.

How to help children draw

Many parents are faced with the fact that children come up to them and ask what they should draw. Ideas for drawings for children should not be too intricate, they will bring their imagination and an unusual vision of the world into any image. Therefore, it is better for children to give simple tasks for the drawing process - surrounding objects, animals, flowers and plants, family members. For parents, in such a pastime, their child will have a double benefit: the child will be busy with an exciting activity, and according to its results, much can be said about the mood and well-being of the little artist.

The very process of drawing is a relaxation in which thoughts, emotions and mood of a person are manifested. And it is not so important what, where and with what to draw, it is much more significant what a person experiences and what satisfaction he receives from his own creativity.
