Original:
Kuligin. And you'll never get used to it, sir.
Boris. From what?
Kuligin. Cruel morals, sir, in our city, cruel! In philistinism, sir, you will see nothing but rudeness and bare poverty. And we, sir, will never get out of this bark! Because honest labor will never earn us more daily bread. And whoever has money, sir, he tries to enslave the poor, so that for his free labors more money make money. Do you know what your uncle, Savel Prokofich, answered the mayor? The peasants came to the mayor to complain that he would not read any of them by the way. The mayor began to say to him: “Listen, he says, Savel Prokofich, you count the peasants well! Every day they come to me with a complaint!” Your uncle patted the mayor on the shoulder, and said: “Is it worth it, your honor, to talk about such trifles with you! A lot of people stay with me every year; you understand: I’ll underpay them for some penny per person, and I make thousands of this, so it’s good for me! That's how, sir! And among themselves, sir, how they live! They undermine each other's trade, and not so much out of self-interest, but out of envy. They quarrel with each other; they lure drunken clerks into their tall mansions, such, sir, clerks, that there is no human appearance on him, his human appearance is lost. And those to them, for a small blessing, on stamp sheets malicious slander scribble on their neighbors. And they will begin, sir, the court and the case, and there will be no end to the torment. They sue, they sue here, but they will go to the province, and there they are already waiting for them and splashing their hands with joy. Soon the fairy tale is told, but the deed is not soon done; lead them, lead them, drag them, drag them; and they are also happy with this dragging, that's all they need. “I, he says, will spend money, and it will become a penny for him.” I wanted to describe all this in verses ...

Arranged by A. Minnikaev

Cruel manners, sir, in our city. cruel
In philistinism, the world is ruled by people who are not at all distant
Full full of rudeness worse than in the life of the capital
You will not see anything but bare poverty.
You will never be able to get out of this bark:
Hope ... many have it, but only for the time being
All who are honest will not earn daily food,
And whoever has money in his pocket is the owner of the poor,
On whose labors he will drink hard and feast,
It is beautiful to live and make even more money.
To tell you how your wild uncle managed to answer,
Savel Prokofich looking with kind eyes to the mayor?

“Listen, brother, you calculate the peasants well.
Every day they come to me with complaints in a small way.
The answer is: should we talk about trifles with you.
They don’t need a penny, that five - I make capital

And among themselves, dear sir, how they live:
They tear their throats, they sell themselves, they strangle trade
They undermine each other, do not hide,
What war is coming from the edge of envy ... they successfully lure
In their high mansions of drunken clerks,
On which there is no human appearance, and such
That lost their appearance. On stamp sheets
Malicious slanders scribble on neighbors and relatives
They sue, they sue and there is no end to stupid disputes
The results of these processes, except for conversations,
How they will go to the province for the truth, an important thing
- They are waiting for them there, clapping their hands with joy.
Soon the fairy tale is being told, but the case is in a hurry
Not good: they are dragged like animal tails,
And they are happy about that, they bell unnecessarily ...
A very strange everyday life: “I will spend money - to speak
“Yes, he will become a penny”
... wanted to portray in verse

In Ostrovsky's drama "Thunderstorm" the problems of morality are widely posed. For example provincial town Kalinov, the playwright showed the truly cruel customs reigning there. Ostrovsky portrayed the cruelty of people living in the old way, according to Domostroy, and a new generation of young people who reject these foundations. The characters in the drama are divided into two groups. On one side are the old people, champions of the old order, who, in essence, carry out this "Domostroy", on the other - and the young generation of the city.

The heroes of the drama live in the city of Kalinovo. This city occupies a small but not last place in Russia of that time, at the same time he is the personification of serfdom and "Domostroy". Outside the walls of the city, another, alien world seems to be. No wonder Ostrovsky mentions the Volga in his remarks, "a public garden on the banks of the Volga, beyond the Volga a rural view." We see how the cruel, closed world of Kalinov differs from the external, "uncontrollably huge." This is the world of Katerina, who was born and raised on the Volga. Behind this world lies the life that Kabanikha and her ilk are so afraid of. According to the wanderer Feklusha, “ old world”leaves, only in this city there is “paradise and silence”, in other places it’s “just sodom”: people in the bustle do not notice each other, they harness the “fiery serpent”, and in Moscow “now there are amusement and games, but along the streets Indo roar goes, groan stands. But even in the old Kalinov, something is changing. New thoughts are carried by Kuligin. Kuligin, embodying the ideas of Lomonosov, Derzhavin and representatives of more early culture, offers to put a clock on the boulevard to watch the time.

Let's get acquainted with the rest of Kalinov's representatives. Marfa Ignatievna Kabanova - champion of the old world. Already the name itself draws us a heavy, heavy woman, and the nickname "Boar" complements this unpleasant picture. The boar lives the old fashioned way, in accordance with a strict order. But she observes only the appearance of this order, which she maintains in public: a good son, an obedient daughter-in-law. He even complains: “They don’t know anything, there is no order ... What will happen, how the old people will die, how the light will stand, I don’t know. Well, at least it’s good that I don’t see anything. ” In the house, real arbitrariness reigns. The boar is despotic, rude, with the peasants, "eats" the household and does not tolerate objections. Her son is completely subordinate to her will, she expects this from her daughter-in-law.

Next to Kabanikha, who every day “grinds all her household like rusty iron,” the merchant Dikoy, whose name is associated with wild strength, is speaking. Wild not only "grinds and saws" members of his family. He also suffers from the men whom he deceives in the calculation, and, of course, the buyers, as well as his clerk Kudryash, a recalcitrant and impudent guy, ready to teach a lesson to the “scoldener” in a dark alley with his fists.

The character of Wild Ostrovsky described very accurately. For Wild, the main thing is money, in which he sees everything: glory, worship. This is especially evident in small town, Where does he live. He can already easily “pat on the shoulder” of the mayor himself.

Diky and Kabanikha, representatives of the old order, are opposed by Kuligin. Ku-ligin is an inventor, his views correspond to those of the Enlightenment. He wants to invent sundial, "perpetuum mobile", lightning rod. His invention of the lightning rod is symbolic, just as a thunderstorm is symbolic in drama. It is not without reason that he does not like Kuligin Dikoy so much, who calls him "worm", "Tatar" and "robber". Diky's willingness to send the inventor-educator to the mayor, his attempts to refute Kuligin's knowledge, based on the wildest religious superstition - all this also acquires in the play symbolic meaning. Kuligin quotes Lomonosov and Derzhavin and refers to their authority. He lives in the old "domostroevsky" world, where they still believe in omens and people with "dog heads", but the image of Kuligin is evidence that people have already appeared in the "dark kingdom" who can become moral judges of those who dominate them . Therefore, at the end of the drama, it is Kuligin who brings Katerina's body ashore and utters words full of reproach.

The images of Tikhon and Boris are developed insignificantly, Dobrolyubov in a well-known article says that Boris can be more likely attributed to the setting than to the heroes. In the remark, Boris is distinguished only by his clothes: "All persons, except Boris, are dressed in Russian." This is the first difference between him and the inhabitants of Kalinov. The second difference is that he studied at a commercial academy in Moscow. But Ostrovsky made him a nephew of Wild, and this suggests that, despite some differences, he belongs to the people of the “dark kingdom”. This is confirmed by the fact that he is not able to fight this kingdom. Instead of giving Katerina a helping hand, he advises her to submit to her fate. The same and Tikhon. Already on the list actors it is said about him that he is “her son”, that is, the son of Kabanikha. He really is more like just a son of Kabanikha than a person. Tikhon has no willpower. The only desire this person - to break out from under the care of his mother in order to take a walk for the whole year. Tikhon is also unable to help Katerina. Both Boris and Tikhon leave her alone with their inner feelings.

If Kabanikha and Wild belong to the old way, Kuligin carries the ideas of enlightenment, then Katerina is at a crossroads. Raised and brought up in a patriarchal spirit, Katerina fully follows this way of life. Cheating here is considered unforgivable, and, having cheated on her husband, Katerina sees this as a sin before God. But her character is naturally proud, independent and free. Her dream to fly means breaking free from the power of her despotic mother-in-law and from the stuffy world of the Kabanovs' house. As a child, she once, offended by something, went to the Volga in the evening. The same protest is heard in her words addressed to Varya: “And if I get very sick of it here, they won’t hold me back by any force. I'll throw myself out the window, I'll throw myself into the Volga. I don’t want to live here, so I won’t, even if you cut me!” In Katerina's soul there is a struggle between the pangs of conscience and the desire for freedom. Katerina is also different from the representatives of the youth - Varvara and Kudryash. She does not know how to adapt to life, to be hypocritical and pretend, as Kabanikha does, she does not know how to look at the world as easily as Varya. Ostrovsky could have ended the drama with a scene of Katerina's repentance. But that would mean that dark kingdom» won. Katerina dies, and in this she is over. the old world.

According to contemporaries, Ostrovsky's play "Thunderstorm" had a very great importance. It shows two worlds, two ways of life - the old and the new with their representatives. Doom main character Katherine suggests that new world will win and that it is this world that will replace the old one.

"Thunderstorm" A.N. Ostrovsky - Kuligin's Monologue

That's what, sir, we have a small town! They made a boulevard, but they don't walk. They walk only on holidays, and then they do one kind of walking, and they themselves go there to show their outfits. You will only meet a drunken clerk, trudging home from the tavern. There is no time for the poor to walk, sir, they have care day and night. And they only sleep three hours a day. And what do the rich do? Well, whatever, it seems, they do not walk, do not breathe fresh air? So no. Everyone's gates, sir, have long been locked and the dogs let loose. Do you think they are doing their job, or are they praying to God? No, sir! And they don’t lock themselves up from thieves, but so that people don’t see how they eat their own home and tyrannize their families. And what tears flow behind these locks, invisible and inaudible! What can I say, sir! You can judge by yourself. And what, sir, behind these locks is the debauchery of the dark and drunkenness! And everything is sewn and covered - no one sees or knows anything, only God sees! You, he says, see me in people and on the street; and you don’t care about my family; to this, he says, I have locks, yes constipation, and angry dogs. The family, they say, is a secret, a secret! We know these secrets! From these secrets, sir, he alone is cheerful, and the rest howl like a wolf. And what's the secret? Who does not know him! Rob orphans, relatives, nephews, beat up the household so that they wouldn’t dare to utter a word about anything he does there. That's the whole secret. Well, God bless them! Do you know, sir, who walks with us? Young boys and girls. So these people steal an hour or two from sleep, well, they walk in pairs. Yes, here's a couple!

Katerina's popular monologue from Ostrovsky's "Thunderstorm"

Why don't people fly?
I speak, why people do not fly like birds? Sometimes I feel like I'm a bird. When you stand on a mountain, you are drawn to fly! That's how I would have run up, raised my hands and flew ... Try something now?! ... And how frisky I was! Was I like that! I lived, did not grieve about anything, like a bird in the wild. Mother did not have a soul in me, dressed me up like a doll, did not force me to work; Whatever I want, I do it. Do you know how I lived in girls? I used to get up early; if it’s summer, I’ll go to the spring, wash myself, bring water with me and that’s it, water all the flowers in the house. I had many, many flowers. And what dreams I had, what dreams! Or golden temples, or some extraordinary gardens, and invisible voices sing, and the smell of cypress, and the mountains and trees seem not to be the same as usual, but as they are written on the images. And the fact that I'm flying, I'm flying through the air. And now sometimes I dream, but rarely, and not that ... Oh, something bad is happening to me, some kind of miracle! This has never happened to me. There is something so extraordinary about me. It's like I'm starting to live again, or ... I really don't know. Such a fear on me, such a fear on me! It’s as if I’m standing over an abyss and someone is pushing me there, but there’s nothing for me to hold on to ... Some kind of dream creeps into my head. And I won't leave her anywhere. If I start thinking, I won’t collect my thoughts, I won’t pray, I won’t pray in any way. I babble words with my tongue, but my mind is completely different: it’s as if the evil one is whispering in my ears, but everything about such things is not good. And then it seems to me that I will be ashamed of myself. What happened with me? I can’t sleep, I keep imagining some kind of whisper: someone is talking to me so affectionately, like a dove cooing. I no longer dream, as before, of paradise trees and mountains, but it’s as if someone hugs me so hot and hot and leads me somewhere, and I follow him, I go ...
