Max Cavalera talks about his tattoos. Max Cavalera: “In our Russian family, they start drinking vodka at ten in the morning

What do tattoos mean to you?

I started getting interested in it when I was very young. I was 12.

To us in Belo Horizonte, where I lived in Brazil, moved famous master. My friend got a tattoo from him and showed it to me. I thought it was cool. I needed money for this so I sold my platinum collection Kiss. I had a whole collection. I went to this master, and he tattooed me without my mother's permission. When I got home, so that there were no problems, I hid the tattoo from my mother, because she did not want me to have tattoos. I used to draw tattoos on myself with a pencil, and I told her that I wanted to get a real one. But what did she say that I would not have tattoos. I was bad at lying. And before going to sleep, I went to the bathroom to change the bandage. And I forgot the bandage with blood on the washbasin. My mother turned on the light in the middle of the night and asked to see her hand. I showed a clean hand, she said to show the other, after which she got very angry and sent me to sleep on the porch outside. She now has three tattoos herself.

What was that tattoo?

I don't have it anymore, I blocked it. I had a palm-sized dragon. Looks a bit like Godzilla. You can see it on the album Sepultura Schizophrenia. On the back there is a photo where I play the guitar. There was this tattoo. Later, I covered it with a tattoo-pattern, which is much larger.

Better tattoos with meaning or nonsense?

When you first get stuffed, you're young and don't think about it that much. Over time, as you become older, you comprehend a lot, and begin to invest some meaning. For example, my neck tattoo. I wanted something to remind me of my travels with the Indians, so I made this pattern for myself.

I think it makes more sense. The guys have a lot of prison tattoos, they look kind of stupid. Gotta wait, come in Right place. And they do not want to wait, they do it with friends. And then the tattoos don't look very good.

What is the most important tattoo for you?

Probably the one around the neck. Because it's in plain sight, and there's no way I can hide it. She is one of my favorites. And I also have the names of my son and brother on the knuckles. I got it 18 years ago when Zion was born. On the other hand I have the name of my brother Igor.

I have a brother Igor, but I did it first of all in honor of my son. And also Dana is my wife's step-son, who was killed in 1996, so I also put his name here.

Also important for me are different tattoos that I associated with the stages of my career.

A tattoo I got drunk in Philadelphia. I don't even remember how it ended up on me. I remember just waking up the next morning and finding her.

The tattoo Max Cavalera got when he was drunk

My favorite of these are the eyes. We were on tour and when we got this tattoo the window was open and there was a church. The master said that we were getting a tattoo and closed the window because of the church.

I also have the inscription "Sepultura" in Japanese. There is absolutely meaningless graffiti.

I have two tattoos of hearts: one is just green, which I made as a gift to my wife (she has the same heart with my name on her chest), the other with her name already.

I still have an unfinished gargoyle on my chest.

I have a logo on my back. Sepultura. I want to do the same for Soulfly, but I can't seem to find the artist from Los Angeles who painted the first one for me. I called him twice. He is busy all the time. But one day I'll do it around my neck.

When getting a tattoo, does it hurt or is it some kind of pleasant pain?

It hurts. But you have to overcome the pain to get what you really want. You will be proud of it. Show it to people. Going through the pain is part of the process that you should enjoy. Some are very painful to do. Burns like hell.

Is it a drug for you?

In the 90s I was under great influence from tattoos. Now I slowed down. If I see one that I really like, then I can do it. I like the symbol of the lion of Judah. I want to do it, maybe on my back.

Symbol of the Lion of Judah

Is a tattoo for you an art or an everyday thing?

I think it's more art. I have a lot of respect for tattoo artists. It's not the same as drawing on paper. Drawings on paper are one thing. When you watch them draw on the skin, and a lot of ink comes out. I don't know how they do it, but when they wipe off the ink, everything is clean.

Max Cavalera was born in Brazil, in Belo Horizonte, but for more than ten years he has been living in Phoenix, USA. His wife, the granddaughter of a Russian émigré officer of the White Army, and their four children are Orthodox, Max himself is still a Catholic, but is thinking about converting to Orthodoxy. And for the Cavalera family, this is far from the first visit to Russia. So Max even managed to learn some Russian words.

Max, your first band was called Sepultura, which means "grave" in Portuguese. Now - Soul Flight, in English "flight of the soul." Is it due to a change in your feelings, thoughts? What made you change the band's name like that?

Sepultura is the name of a band conceived at a young age. It was still an apprenticeship and should have caused some kind of shock. The new name is due to the fact that I have matured, I have children, I began to think differently. Of course, this name change has spiritual roots. This is due to the interest in Indian, Brazilian culture. This title is more positive. It can be said that I took my eyes off the ground and began to look at the sky. Therefore, the "flight of the soul."

- Today you spent half a day in Orthodox church. What does the Orthodox faith mean to you now?

First of all, it's a feeling. Of course, I did not understand anything from what was said during the service, but I felt it. There was a feeling like trembling when the feeling takes over. I think here in Russia the church is more authentic than we have in the United States.

- Have you thought about converting to Orthodoxy?

Perhaps I thought about it! My wife, my children are Orthodox. So it is possible that I will convert to Orthodoxy, because for this, as I was told, it is enough for me to declare that I profess Orthodoxy, and a new baptism will not be required.

- After all, you wrote a letter to a member of the Romanov dynasty. What was this letter about and what prompted you to write to him?

That was very small letter, but I considered it important to write it and express my deep respect.

- Do you think that the monarchical idea in politics is close to hard rock in music?

Yes, I think they have a lot in common. They give a certain coolness, calmness, open people's eyes. Monarchy can be compared to a march. I think it's really close to each other in terms of sensations. It is important to understand that the monarchical idea can be close not only to older people, but also to young people who like my music, hard Rock.

- Max, when will your next concert in Russia?

I am planning it next summer. My brother and I will prepare fresh records and then we will definitely arrive. I really like Russia!

- What do you like about Russia?

Much. For example, music. I don't just listen to hard rock. I love classical music. In particular, I like Tchaikovsky's music. And tonight my wife and I are going to watch Russian ballet!

The interview was given by Max a few years ago to one of the Orthodox-Monarchist publications. Now Max has accepted Orthodoxy.
Note:

This is also an Orthodox view of the activities of M. Cavalero and his citizens..

Brazilian vocalist and guitarist Italian descent. Founder of Sepultura, Nailbomb, Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy.

Max Cavalera ( full name Massimiliano Antonio Cavalera was born on August 4, 1969 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. His father, Graziano Cavalera, was an employee of the Italian consulate in Brazil. There he married a local girl from Belo Horizonte, model Vania. They had two sons, Max and Igor, and a daughter, Kira. Max has been interested in music since childhood. He started listening to bands like Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Motorhead and AC / DC, then switched to harder material - Death, Venom, Possessed, etc. In 1984, he created the Sepultura band with his brother Igor. At that time, Brazil did not have a very developed death/thrash metal scene and famous bands, but heavy riffs, lyrics on religious and political topics, which was created by Max, brought the group wide popularity. In the late 80s, Max had the opportunity to get to New York to sign a 7-album deal with Roadrunner records. Until 1991, Cavalera lived in Brazil. He then moves to Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Gloria, the manager of Sepultura, and becomes a US citizen. In 1991, Sepultura released the album Arise, which was certified platinum by the RIAA. Then in 1993 comes Chaos A.D. - the band moved away from thrash to more rhythmic metal with elements of Brazilian folklore.

In 1994-1995, with his brother Igor and the husband of one of his wife's daughters (from a previous marriage), Alex Newport, he recorded the albums Point Blank and Proud To Commit Commercial Suicide as part of the Nailbomb side project.

In 1996, some time after the release of the Roots album, an official statement appeared on the Sepultura website that Max was no longer a member of the group. The conflict, which began a long time ago, was associated with Gloria, who was the group's manager. The group fired Gloria, and Max, having set the condition that only Gloria would be their manager, with which the team did not agree, also decided to leave Sepultura, later founding new team Soulfly.

Max still lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Gloria and their common children Zion and Igor. One of his stepsons, Dana Wells, tragically died in a car accident in 1996. To record albums, Max often specifically invites singers and musicians from groups that Dana liked, in particular Fred Durst, Tom Araya, Chino Moreno, Sean Lennon, Corey Taylor, Grady Avenell, Barton C Bell, Jonathan Davis and others. Also, Max and Gloria hold an annual concert, with the participation of many groups in honor of Dana.

In 2008, Max and his brother Igor, who also left Sepultura in the end, teamed up for the first time in 10 years for the side project Cavalera Conspiracy and recorded the first album, Inflikted, which was highly praised by critics and occupied not last places in the charts of many countries.

This man is a living legend of thrash metal, as at one time, together with his brother, he did something unprecedented for Brazil. Max Cavalera and his brother Igor, as teenagers, put together a gang called Sepultura, which gained world fame and still attracts new admirers. By the way, the brothers left the group a long time ago, but now we are talking not about her. This article will present interesting photos Max Cavalier different years.

Childhood

Massimiliano Antonio Cavalera was born on August 4, 1969. The birthplace is the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, in which his father served as consul at the Italian embassy. Horatio Cavalera fell in love local girl Vania, who worked in modeling agency, and from this happy union, two wonderful boys were born to the family - Max and Igor.

The brothers have been raving about music since childhood and admired the work of bands such as Motorhead, AC / DC, Queen and Iron Maiden. Max Cavalera already realized that he would never become either an “office plankton” or a factory worker. When the guys lost their father, the eldest of them was only 16. To relieve the pain and distract from sad thoughts, the brothers created their own group.

"Sepultura"

Having decided to earn a living through music, the guys invited their comrades and came to grips with creativity. In 1984, Max Cavalier's band called Sepultura appeared. At that time, the guys just got acquainted with the music of the Venom metal band, which directly influenced their own sound.

The "engine" in this project was originally Max Cavalera, as he was the author and composer of all the songs. Many of them are written on such serious topics as religion and politics, which, in fact, became hallmark Sepultura groups. They became a sort of trailblazers, since before that there was not a single really heavy team in Catholic Brazil.

In 1989, Cavalera went to New York with his future wife, Gloria Buynovskaya, who was the manager of Sepultura, to sign a contract with the Dutch record company Roadrunner records. Until 1991, the guys were based in Sao Paulo, but then they changed their Brazilian citizenship to American and settled in Phoenix (Arizona). At the same time, Max Cavalera and the team released Arise vinyl, which received platinum status. And in the next album of the 93rd year of release, the music was enriched with elements of Brazilian folklore, which became the "highlight" of the Sepultura group.

Leaving and its reasons

In 1996, the cult album Roots was released, after which a big tour was planned, but it was not destined to be completed to the end. The reason for this was sudden death Dana Wells is the stepson of Max Cavalera, who died in an accident. This sad news made the musician drop everything and go to the funeral.

Max and Gloria took this loss very hard and were in deep mourning. However, other members of the group still performed one more time as part of that same tour, with the help of friends in this. Dana was remembered with a minute of silence by all the fans who were present at that concert, but Gloria and Max Cavalera considered this inappropriate. Therefore, the musician soon left the group and founded solo project Soulfly. However, there is another version, according to which the reason for the departure of the leader was internal conflict about the change of manager.

Solo career

After the death of Dana, Max Cavalera decided to honor his blessed memory with an album recorded together with the idols of his stepson himself. Alternative metal stars such as Corey Taylor, Jonathan Davis, Chino Moreno and Fred Durst took part. This has become a good tradition as Cavalera commemorates Dana Wells with annual concerts on the day of his death. By 2008, the brothers reconciled and created a joint project called Cavalera Conspiracy.

Personal life

Max Cavalier's wife, Gloria Buynovskaya, is sixteen years older than her husband, and she has children from her first marriage. An interesting fact is that Russian blood flows in her veins. The fact is that her grandmother once emigrated from Russia, fleeing from Soviet power.

Gloria has an aunt in Omsk, whom she and her husband often visit. Despite the fact that Max Cavalera creates quite brutal music, as a person he is quite religious. In infancy, he was baptized in the Vatican, but Orthodoxy turned out to be closer to the musician in spirit, so not so long ago he changed his faith.

Cavalera's family currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona. They have two common children - Zion and Igor.

So, an unusual tribute to the past SEPULTURA arrived in Minsk. I myself could not attend the concert (because BATUSHKA is in Kyiv today, and I wanted to go), but photographer Sergey Gagulin captured how it was and shared his feelings.

Next Friday in the capital's "Republic" it will be possible to shake gray hair and nostalgia: brothers Max & Iggor Cavalera are coming with a special program dedicated to albums Beneath The Remains And Arise. Well, since the tour has already begun, and the family is bobbing along the roads and clubs of Siberia right now, Gloria Cavalera is broadcasting a road broadcast in her diary in her free minute. Here is the beginning big way in her description...

Max Cavalera celebrated his 49th birthday on August 4 - and is currently hard at work on the October album SOULFLY Ritual. Which, according to the musician, well, right in general. “I know everyone always says that the upcoming release is their favorite and stuff, but in the case of the new SOULFLY, the hit really happened to be a ten, because it has everything that I have ever loved in this band. It has tribal elements and a groove, a huge dose of high-speed material. In a way it's "tribal thrash" mixed with death and atmosphere. Chaos A.D., like we haven't done before.

In mid-November, the honored "cavaliers" release the fourth full-length album Psychosis- and judging by the first track "Insane" presented, this time there is a chance to hear something really peppy. Well, in fact, the old trash: a bit of "Sepultur" Arise, small greetings to SLAYER, and, in general, nothing more. Psychos, madness, speed, primitive chopping lyrics from the shoulder. CAVALERA CONSPIRACY!

Last week, "Return To Roots" from the Cavalera brothers - with a clear program. Until the end of October, Max & Iggor Cavalera will ride around America - after which we are promised European dates, and if you are interested, you can follow the updates here. In addition, various kinds of anniversary collector's editions, vinyls and other honest ways of taking money and surprises for fans have been announced. In parallel, indulging in nostalgic memories, Max reflects: what if history had gone differently?

This, of course, was bound to happen one day - although not in the format that long years dream fans of the old SEPULTURA. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album Roots, Igor and Max Cavalera signed up for an anniversary tour in his honor. With it is clear what setlist.

Max Cavalera returning May 17 in Minsk with your SOULFLY in a KORN caliper, released an autobiographical book, My Bloody Roots: From Sepultura To Soulfly And Beyond, co-authored by noted English music biographer and writer Joel McIver. "My musical career approaching the thirtieth anniversary, - says Max, - 30 years in music. So it's probably about time. I'll tell you this entertaining story about "from Brazil with love". From nothing to the achievement of a dream. A lot of funny things happened along the way - how I, for example, made Lemmy angry and how he later chewed my wife's ass (in figuratively, of course — wildly drove her that is); how I puke on Eddie Vedder on tour with MINISTRY. There are many things that you can’t imagine on purpose.”

Okay, I lied a little: Greg Puciato (by the way, did you know that he had Belarusian roots? Greg's ancestors came to the States from Slutsk) was not among founders of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, although it was with his appearance at the microphone that the band found its characteristic shape and sound. However, this is not about "Dillingers". We have another supergroup - KILLER BE KILLED, announced in October last year, but only this March released the first themes for fans withering in impatience. So, the line-up of the project: Greg Puciato, Max Cavalera and Troy Sanders from MASTODON - all three (!) on vocals, Max and Greg also on guitar positions, and Troy on bass. Plus drummer Dave Elitch, who previously pounded on the late THE MARS VOLTA. Impressive? Still would!

In a special section of the RockSound edition, they say, "it's nice to talk to smart person Max turned to his former self - young and inexperienced. And he wrote a letter under the heading "A Letter To My Younger Self", briefly summarizing his rich life experience.

However, do those CRYPTOPSY exist today? Over the years, the composition of this technical death brigade changed almost like the contents of COF, but if at least Dani is consistently listed in the cradles, then in the case of the Canadians ... alas. The most "original" and permanent member until some time there was a drummer Flo Mounier - but even that, judging by breaking news, screwed. In rap metal. His new, joint with former members INTO ETERNITY, the project is called DIGITAL DOOMZDAY and performs an acutely social metalized rap: globalism, politics, sex, religion, drugs, poverty, etc. Delve into.

“Last year I called Andreas Kisser and asked him to recreate SEPULTURA with the original lineup,” Max Cavalera said in a recent interview, “because I really want this! I called and said, dude, it's time. Let's do it. And he agreed. And then all the bullshit started. He started making crazy demands, like leaving the people who work with them now, and make him the leader of the team, so that he steers everything and decides everything.

I replied, they say, nothing like this will work - and Andreas started talking about money. Money money money. In short, this conversation ended. And what about grandmas? Don't care about grandmas!
