Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop:

Step 2

Open a photo of a mountainous area in Photoshop and transfer it to the created document with the Move Tool (V).

Step 3

Apply a Gaussian Blur filter (Filter ? Blur ? Gaussian Blur) with a value of 4 pixels.

Step 4

In the center of the sky you can see a cloud that we don't need. It draws too much attention to itself.

Create a new layer and use the Clone Stamp Tool (S) to smudge the cloud.

Step 5

Paste the grunge texture into our document and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise (Edit > Transform > Rotate 90 CW). Flip the texture (Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical) and stretch it to fit the entire canvas.

Step 6

Reduce the amount yellow color on stage using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

Step 7

Darken the background with a Curves adjustment layer.

2. Model

Step 1

Open the photo of the girl and separate it from the background. Transfer the girl to the main document and place it in the middle of the canvas.

Step 2

Add a mask to the girl's layer and use the Lasso Tool (L) to select part of the head.

On the mask, fill the selected area with black.

Step 3

Create a new layer below the model layer. Use the Lasso Tool (L) to create another selection with sharp edges.

Fill the selection with #281e1e .

Step 4

Select the body part of the girl again.

Create a Curves Adjustment Layer with Clipping Mask and brighten the body part.

Step 5

Reduce the amount of red on the girl with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

Step 6

Create a Color Balance Adjustment Layer for the girl and adjust only the midtones. The girl will then blend in better with the background.

Step 7

Lighten up the girl with a Curves Adjustment Layer. With a soft brush, return the previous brightness to the front.

3. Mountains

Step 1

Open the mountains photo and select only the mountains with the Magic Wand Tool (W). Place the mountains on the girl's head.

Step 2

Add a mask and with a hard brush hide the part that fits over the eye. Also erase the part of the mountains that went beyond the head.

Step 3

Create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer to completely desaturate the mountains.

Step 4

Change the tone of the mountains with a Color Balance adjustment layer.

Step 5

Increase the contrast with the Curves layer.

4. Background circles

Step 1

Return to the original photograph of the mountainous area. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) to select one area:

Copy the selected part into our document and place it between the texture and Hue/Saturation layers.

Set the blend mode to Soft Light.

Step 2

Select the round part (hold Ctrl and click on the layer thumbnail) and shrink the selection by 30px (Select > Modify > Contract).

Add a mask and invert it (Ctrl + I).

Step 3

Create a copy of the layer (Ctrl + J) and rotate it clockwise, then scale it down.

On the layer mask with white, bring back part of the image using the splatter brush.

Step 4

Create a new layer above the Hue/Saturation and Curves adjustment layers for the background. Draw a circle with the Ellipse Tool, color #e3e3d0 .

Set the blend mode to Soft Light.

Step 5

Add a mask and loosen the circle so the edges are barely visible.

5. Create an abstract circle

Step 1

Open Illustrator and create a new document.

Using the Ellipse Tool (U), draw a circle with color #716E72 , turn off the fill and turn on an 8pt stroke.

Step 2

Hold Alt and move the layer to create a copy. In Free Transform (E) mode reduce the circle and place it inside the previous one. Change the stroke color to #3E3D3F .

Step 3

Make a copy of the first circle, scale it down and place it inside the second one.

Step 4

Draw a circle in the middle with #231F20 .

Step 5

Select all the circles and go to the Object menu? blend? Blend Options and set like this:

Press Ctrl + Alt + B to match all circles.

Step 6

Open the brushes panel (F5) and click on the menu. Go to Open Brush Library ? Artistic? Artistic Ink and choose Dry Ink 2.

Save the file in EPS format.

6. Insert an abstract circle

Step 1

Return to Photoshop. Paste the circle we created in Illustrator and rasterize it.

Step 2

Position the circle behind the model and rotate it a bit. Set the blending mode to Soft Light and use the mask and splatter brush to make the edges rough.

Step 3

Create a Color Balance adjustment layer for the circle:

Make a copy of the layer and change its blending mode to Multiply. Position the circle above your head behind the mountains. Wipe the edges with stain and splatter brushes. Don't be afraid to experiment, your options don't have to be exactly like mine.

Step 5

Make a few more copies of the circle and set their blending mode to Soft Light. Place the circles behind the girl, as well as on her face and shoulders. Erase partially the circles with a mask and spot brushes.

Lower the opacity of the circle on the right side to 50%.

Step 6

Create a new layer above the girl's layer with the following settings:

Now we will work with the Dodge Tool (O) and Burn Tool (O) to improve the shadows and the light. In the settings, select the Midtones range and set the exposure to 15-20%. Walk along the edges of the light part of the skin with the dodge tool. Then darken the lips a little.

7. Insert scaffolding

Open the forest photo in Photoshop and use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to select the top part.

Position the forest on our canvas like this:

Add a mask and with a hard brush erase part of the forest, leaving it only on the girl's body.

Step 2

Darken the forest with a Curves adjustment layer.

On the mask, leave a shadow only on the edges.

Step 3

Select another part of the forest and paste it on the head.

Erase part of the forest with spot brushes.

Step 4

Add more trees to the girl's body using masks and brushes.

8. Lines

Step 1

Create a new layer on the very top. Use the Line Tool (U) to create some 2 px thick lines with #1b1101 color.

Step 2

Put the line layers in one group (Ctrl + G) and add a mask. With a soft brush, blur the lines on the head so that they are not so bright.

9. Decorative circles

Step 1

Paste the vector circles into our document and rasterize them.

Step 2

Add a mask to some circles and put them on the girl's body. Set the blend mode to Soft Light.

Step 3

Create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer to change the colors of some of the circles.

10. Flowers

Step 1

Paste the flowers into our document and place them on the girl's back.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a new trend in art appeared - modernism. The new postulates implied the rejection of certain traditions. The wording that "the past is cramped" became fashionable and quite short term got a lot of fans. The leading role in the ongoing changes belonged to abstractionism, which united a number of trends that arose on the basis of modernism, such as futurism, cubism, expressionism, surrealism and others. Abstractions in painting were not immediately accepted by society, but soon a new style proved his belonging to the art.

Development

By the thirties of the twentieth century, the current of abstractionism gained momentum. The founder of a new direction in the art of painting was Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most progressive artists of that time. A whole galaxy of followers formed around the master, for whom the process of studying the state of the soul and inner intuitive sensations became the basis of creativity. Artists ignored the reality of the world around them and expressed their feelings in abstract art. Some canvases of the early followers of the new genre were impossible to understand. Pictures of abstract art usually did not carry any information, and unprepared visitors to exhibitions and openings were often at a loss. Attaching annotations to paintings was not accepted at that time, and every connoisseur of pictorial creativity could rely only on his own vision.

Masters and founders

Among the most prominent followers of the new trend were the famous abstract artists Wassily Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova, Peter Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov. Each of them followed their own direction. Abstract paintings by famous artists gradually became recognizable, and this contributed to the promotion of a new art form.

Kazimir Malevich worked in line with Suprematism, preferring geometric basis for self-expression. The dynamics of his compositions on canvas came from a seemingly chaotic combination of rectangles, squares, and circles. The arrangement of the figures on the canvas defied any logic, and at the same time, the picture gave the impression of a strictly verified order. In the art of abstraction, there are enough examples that fundamentally contradict each other. The first impression upon acquaintance with the picture can leave a person indifferent, and after a while the canvas will already seem interesting.

And Mikhail Larionov followed the direction of Rayonism, the technique of which consisted in the unexpected intersection of straight ray-like lines of different colors and shades. The colorful play in the picture was fascinating, fantastic combinations of intersecting rays alternated in endless combinations, and the canvas radiated a stream of energy.

Tachisme

Abstract artists Delaunay and Kupka presented their own art. They tried to achieve maximum effect through the rhythmic intersection of colorful planes. Representatives of tachisme, a pictorial drawing obtained as a result of the chaotic application of large strokes in the absolute absence of a plot component, expressed their artistic credo in this way. Oil abstraction in the Tachisme style is the most difficult, painting in this genre can be perceived in an infinite number of interpretations, and each will be considered correct. However the last word still remains with critics and art historians. At the same time, the style of abstractionism itself is not limited by any framework or conventions.

neoplasticism

And if the paintings were an example of meaninglessness, then the Dutch abstract painter Peter Mondrian introduced a strict system of interaction big figures with right angles, which on the canvas contrasted with each other and at the same time somehow in an incomprehensible way merged into one. Experiments with color (blue period, pink period) smoothly turned into a change in forms, deliberate deformation and destruction of nature. An example of such paintings can be considered a canvas painted in 1907, when abstractions in painting were just beginning to gain strength. Thus, the work of Picasso led some artists of that time to a completely new genre, which completely rejected the traditions of naturalism and cognitive value visual arts.

The paintings of abstract artists of the early twentieth century made a revolution in the painting of that period, on the wave of numerous trends and directions. artistic creativity masters of the brush appeared who managed to prove that abstraction is a completely independent type of fine art, part of culture.

Modern abstract art

Step 1.

Create a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl+N) size 800X800px. Insert the nebula image from the lesson materials into it (Ctrl+A (select), Ctrl+C (copy), Ctrl+V (insert)) .


Step 2

The stars look pretty blurry, so let's sharpen them up with the Unsharp Mask filter. (Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask). We perform the settings from the screenshot below: Quantity (Amount) 70% radius (radius) 1.5 pixels, Isohelia (Threshold) 0 levels.


Step 3

We want to add some light to our background. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and call it "Central Light". Selecting the Gradient Tool (gradient) with radial style color from white to transparent (white to transparent) and stretch it from the center of the canvas to its edge.

Now create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) called "White Highlights" and, repeating the previous process of lightening, create several small radial gradients in color from white to transparent. Blend Mode Overlay (Overlay).



Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and call it "Rainbow Glare". Create some small radial gradients from white to transparent, then open Layer Styles. Change the blending mode of this layer to Overlay. (Overlay).

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) titled "Vignette". Use a large soft brush (brush) black with opacity (Opacity) 60% at the edges and corners of the image.

Roughly cut out the model from the background and paste it into our document (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V).



Next, apply a Levels adjustment layer to the face layer. (Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Levels or click on the black and white adjustment icon at the bottom of the layers palette). Make adjustments from the screenshot, then add a clipping mask to this layer (right-click on the layer thumbnail and select the item - Create Clipping Mask).



Create another Adjustment Layer "Color Balance" (Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Color Balance) also with clipping mask (Clipping mask).



Make a smoother outline around the girl's face using the Pen Tool (PenTool). Create a selection path (Ctrl + Enter or right-click on the path and select "Make Selection"), then click on the layer mask icon (Add Layer Mask) at the bottom of the layers panel to remove the excess. You can see the resulting face outline in the Paths panel. (Paths), which is next to the Layers palette.



Next, download a set of abstract brushes from the materials of the lesson and install them into the program through the menu Edit-Set Management-Brushes (Edit-Preset Manager-Brushes). Select any brushes from the set, set their color to black and, by activating the layer mask with the face, create several patterns on the girl's face. This technique creates an interesting effect of fragments of the face. Choose the brush pattern carefully so that it blends harmoniously with the image of the heroine. You can change the angle of the brushes, their position in the settings panel (F5). If suddenly you don't like something, use a brush white color and paint over the defect on the mask.


Step 6

Now load the splatter set from the tutorial resources and select the red splash. We open (Ctrl+O) it in a new document.



Next, we'll isolate the splash from the black background. Duplicate this layer (Ctrl+J) and temporarily hide the duplicate (click on thumbnail eye). On the original layer, go to the menu Image-Corrections-Levels (image>adjustments>levels) to make the splatter more contrast with the background.



Go to menu Selection - Color Range (select>color range) and with the leftmost eyedropper, click on the black background of the image.



Click OK, and we get the background selection. Then, invert the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I or select>inverse) to select only the splash. With the selection active, go to the menu Selection-Modification-Compress (select>modify>contract) and set the shrink radius to 2 px (this allows you to get rid of jagged edges). We do not remove the selection yet.



Now, turn on the visibility of the duplicate splash (click on the eye again) and activate this layer. This is what we will need, since the original has become too contrasting and not suitable for our composition, we used it only for highlighting. Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) duplicate splashes in the composition.


Step 7



Add a mask to this layer (click on the mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel "Add Layer Mask" or Layer-Layer Mask-Reveal All) and soft black brush (brush) medium size with 20% opacity (Opacity) remove the edge of the bottom of the splash so that there is a soft imperceptible transition to the face.



Apply to the splatter layer several adjustment layers with a clipping mask for each (right click on the adjustment thumbnails and select Create Clipping Mask). Now select a few more splashes from the set and paste them into our work. Repeat the process with the warp and mask, hiding the edges of the spatter on the face. We perform the correction settings from step 7.


Step 9

Now repeat steps 7 and 8 for another splash but position it with right side from the girl's point of view.



Let's create the illusion of depth in the picture using a simple trick. Add a Gaussian Blur filter to the big splash layer. (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 2.8 px.


Step 10

Duplicate the splash (Ctrl+J) on the right and increase its size using Transform (Edit-Free Transform or Ctrl+T). Rotate it so that it covers the lower left corner of the image. Adding more more depth, applying a Gaussian blur to this layer (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 7 px.


Step 11

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and call it "Shadow Details". Choose a black soft brush (brush) 2 px in size and carefully draw it along the edges of the cuts on the face, imitating a certain volume in the recesses of the pattern. For this procedure, we enlarge the image (Ctrl+) to see all cutouts clearly.

I lowered the opacity (Opacity) up to 70% to make the shadow effect more subtle.


Step 12

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and call it "Blick". We fill (Edit-Fill or Shift+F5) layer in black (#000000) and change the blending mode of this layer to Screen (screen), hiding the black background. This will allow us to work with the flash effect in a non-destructive way.


Go to the menu Filter-Rendering-Glare (filter>render>lens) and add a highlight above the left eye of the model. Lowering the Opacity (Opacity) this layer up to 80%. Below is how the flare should look with normal (Normal) blend mode and Screen mode (screen).




Now let's add a highlight to the left side of the composition next to the girl's right eye. Repeat the process of creating a highlight, as in step 12 (on a separate layer, of course).


Step 13

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and call it "Highlight Colorization". Create some bright radial gradients (radial gradient) color from neon to transparent. Try to choose shades that fit with the overall picture.



Now change the blending mode of this layer to Overlay. (Overlay) with opacity (Opacity) 10%.


Step 14

Create a new layer called Lighten/Darken. We fill it 50% in gray (Edit-Fill) and change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlay). This will non-destructively emphasize the shadows and light in the composition.


Choosing a soft brush (brush) black color and intensify the shadows by swiping over the darkened areas of the image. Then, take the brush (brush) white and emphasize the light areas. Use this stage not only to enhance shadows and highlights, but also to better blend visual elements.

Finally, add a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer. (Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Gradient Map) to the whole composition. In the options dialog, click on the Gradient Editor (color scale) and set the colors from purple to green (#9400e1 to #00601b). Decrease the opacity (Opacity) of this layer up to 7%, leaving only a thin shade.
