Music groups in Norway

Kaizers Orchestra- a very famous rock band in Norway, which arose in 2000 in a place called brunet. Band leaders, vocalist Janove Ottesen and guitarist Geir Zahl they had known each other since childhood and started playing together in 1991 in the band Blod, Snått & Juling. The "Kaisers" had the distinction of being the first Norwegian band to sing in their native Norwegian and gain wide popularity in continental Europe. For the Norwegians themselves, "Kaisers" are outstanding because of the unlike music and the Brunet dialect, in which the vocalist Ottesen sings. They play, by their own definition, Oompa (Norwegian ompa) and Kaiserrok. In general, this Norwegian group belongs to the category of those whose work is difficult to “fit” into any particular musical style.

is a unique phenomenon in the Norwegian music scene. This group, founded in the early 70s, was one of the first to combine rock and elements folk music. The complexity of the arrangements and the filigree performance technique make it possible to characterize Folque's music as "progressive folk-rock". In addition, it contains elements of other styles and trends - blues, country, rock and roll and others.

Morten Bing is considered the founder of the team. In the early 70s, he was one of those who, with a guitar in his hands, performed vises (songs) of his own composition in the clubs of the Norwegian capital Oslo. Sometimes his friend Eilif Amundsen joined him. In 1972, friends received an invitation to take part in a collection of songs calling against ... Norway's entry into the European Union!
The release of the record contributed to the organization of Morten's summer tour of the coastal cities of southern Norway. During concerts, he met a man named Jörn Jensen. At the end of the tour, Morten met Eilif and his brother in Kristiansand, and they persuaded him to go to London. In the British capital, an acquaintance with two other characters took place - Lars Hellesen and Espen Lövstad.

The Norwegian underground and cynically mocking band was organized by the four main members of Duplex Records in the late 90s. As you can guess, its name is a pun on the name of the progenitors of the "heavy" metal BLACK SABBATH, which once sang the great and terrible Ozzy Osbourne: However, BLACK DEBBATH was born paying tribute to the cult English - in their music you will find both the groove of the original "Sabbath" rock and its dark energy. But unlike most of the followers of "Sabbatini", who developed the darkest and most depressing kind of "heavy" music - doom metal - BLACK DEBBATH from the very beginning took the path of irony and parody. This was especially true of the lyrics of their songs, where topical political and social phenomena were served under the sauce of wit and inexhaustible humor. to feel it.

, founded in 1994 with the support of the Bergen Department of Culture, is today one of the leading Scandinavian teams that deserve international recognition in area early music.

The musicians of the ensemble received an excellent education in the field of historical performance, studying with leading European teachers in the best music colleges and academies in Scandinavia and around the world, as well as in the framework of international master classes in the performance of early music. They lead both ensemble and solo concert activity, perform in the Scandinavian countries, in Russia and the USA, have recordings on Norwegian Radio (NRK), and also collaborate with record companies Simax Classics, BIS, Bbrecords, Toccata Classics.

The Norwegian band under the name is still little known outside of Norway, although at home the group still has a cult status and represents one of the most interesting phenomena in the music scene. Despite the fact that ten years have passed since the release of the last album, interest in the work of YM :STAMMEN among underground fans is still high.

occupy a special place in the modern Norwegian "heavy" scene. Group style can be roughly defined as Technical Progressive Metal ("technical progressive metal"). It is based on the most complicated melody, constant changes in rhythm and the highest technical impeccability of performance.

The history of the group begins in 2000. The band's name appears to have been inspired by the album of the same name by American thrash metal classics Forbidden. For several years, the musicians have been trying to "squeeze into the mold" their extraordinary and diverse ideas and emotions. Moreover, two of them - guitarist Kai Gornitska and vocalist Leif Knashaug - went to school in the band Spiral Architect, also famous for their extraordinary and complex music. Drummer David Husvik, who worked in Extol, and bassist Eric Orland added to the company.

One of the few Norwegian bands that have chosen high-quality and technical thrash metal as their musical path, was founded in January 1987 in the city of Fredrikstad.

The first line-up of the band included guitarist and vocalist Grim Stene, drummer Ragnar "Raggen" Westin and bassist Sküle Stene. Previously, the whole trinity played in the ensemble Rebellion that has existed since the early 80s. Name("Equinox") was inspired by the song of the same name by the classic German thrash band Sodom.

Music groups and collectives - Music of Norway

Archaeological research shows that Norwegian music originated in ancient times. This is evidenced by both artifacts and a large number of folk instruments. Norwegian folk songs are performed on many varieties of bowed and wind instruments. Compositions and songs are dominated by motifs ancient era. They feature the gods of the Vikings, their legends and beliefs.

As far as classical music is concerned, Norwegian music has adopted many Danish traditions. The country was dependent on the neighboring state, which affected the development of culture. At the end of the eighteenth century, Linnemann organists became known in the state. Their works are performed to this day. Known all over the world famous composer Edward Grieg. Norwegian music in the style of romanticism began its development precisely with the works of this musician.

IN modern history The most famous performer from Norway was the group A-ha. Thanks to the musicians from this group, popular Norwegian music has become popular all over the world. The group appeared during the heyday of " new wave”, which occurred in the late 70s and early 80s. At that time, Norwegian electro-pop songs were appearing. Blaupunkt, Kjøtt and others are considered prominent performers of that time.

The world knows not only Norwegian songs of pop artists. Jazz saxophonist Jana Garbarek is very popular. Opera singer Sissel Shirshebo became famous for her performance at Olympic Games held in Norway in 1994. As for modern styles, the country has developed both electronic and dance directions. Club Norwegian music is represented by such performers as Ørjan Nilsen, Skatebård and others.

"Ylvis" is a musical group based in the Norwegian city of Bergen (Bergen, Norway). Its members are two brothers, comedians Bård and Vegard Ylvisåker, who started performing together in 2000. So, performing at all kinds of concert venues with humorous numbers and songs, they suddenly created a hit that literally blew up the Internet. Many wondered why the unpretentious song "The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)" attracted all these millions of listeners, while Bord and Vegard were celebrating real success.

When the video for the song "The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)" reached 45 million views on the popular YouTube video service in two weeks, it was amazing. When the number of views exceeded 120 million, many reputable music magazines wrote about the young Norwegian brothers. Now the number of listeners and viewers of the "Ylvis" group has confidently stepped over 265 million, and this figure is clearly not final.

At home in Norway, "Ylvis" is incredibly popular - having started performing in 2000, the brothers confidently made their way into the most popular television shows. It is known from their early life that Bord and Vegard were born in Bergen, and as children they happened to live in Angola (Angola) and Mozambique (Mozambique), where their engineer father was sent to work. Back in Bergen, the brothers began to study music. Both grew up incredibly artistic, from childhood they actively performed on the school stage, and later performed more than once on various variety show stages and in all kinds of clubs.

Many have tried to explain the phenomenal success of the simple song "The Fox", which became an absolute hit worldwide. The text of this song is simple to the point of absurdity - having listed what "mu-mu", "bow-wow" and "quack-quack" different animals make, the musicians of "Ylvis" complained that foxes, alas, do not make any sounds.

Later, one of the brothers, Vegard, said that they just got the idea to write some kind of "totally idiotic" song in "phenomenal dumb topic"- and this song was born, about the sounds that the fox makes.

The brothers did not expect the success that immediately fell on them - at first it even seemed to them that all this was some kind of gigantic hoax. But the numbers spoke for themselves - they went to listen to their comic song about foxes.

Lions and millions of users from all over the world.

Later, the same Vegard admitted that he was no longer surprised by anything and was starting to get used to the fact that such crazy things could actually happen. He also suggested that the next worldwide hit would be "a song about a frog recorded in Germany."

The song "The Fox" meanwhile hit the American chart "Billboard Hot 100", although before that the US did not know about the existence of the Norwegian band "Ylvis".

To date, "Ylvis" does not yet have full-fledged albums, there are only a few recorded singles - "Stonehenge", "Someone Like Me", "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" and a few others.

According to forecasts, the clip "The Fox" in a year has an excellent chance of becoming the second most viewed video after the famous "Gangnam Style".

The band consists of Anne Marit Bergheim, Solveig Heilo, Marianne Sveen and Turid Jørgensen. The group is easily recognizable by their bass balalaika with a cat's muzzle painted on it, a symbol echoing their name "Katzenjammer", which literally means "cat screams". They use over 16 different musical instruments in their performances!

The group was founded by four girls in 2005. famous group became thanks to the NRK Urørt project, a platform for up-and-coming bands and artists, where all their work is viewed, selected, distributed and published. The girls also competed in the Kjempesjansen project, a Norwegian talent show. With unique sounds and extraordinary performances, the girls slowly but surely gained a reputation and attracted the attention of the public. In 2007, they give a concert at the famous Norwegian Wood festival (Norwegian Wood, in our opinion). Ultimately, the girls produce the hit "A Bar In Amsterdam" and win the Urørt Award - "Artist of the Year".

They write about them: “The fantastic Katzenjammer are gaining popularity and occupying the top of the music charts in Norway. Welcome to the world of Balkan punk, polka rock, circus music and Wild West melodies! Here accordion, mandolin, guitar and piano meet bass balalaika, bells, trumpet and banjo. Epochs and musical genres merge into a single unforgettable show!”

Norwegian heavy groups

Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band formed in 1993. One of the few black metal bands to achieve serious commercial success and popularity outside of black metal fans (see also Satyricon).

The name of the group comes from the isl. dimmuborgir, which translates as "dark fortress". This is the name of an attraction in Iceland - a lava formation, which, according to legend, is the gateway to underworld. In addition, in the 3rd book of the trilogy of J. R. R. Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings" - "The Return of the King" in the 2nd chapter, immediately after the farewell scene of Aragorn and Eowyn, Dimmorborg - the Mountain of Spirits in Rohan is mentioned.
In 1993, when the group was just born, its members included Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv. In 1994, the band had already released their first mini-album called "Inn I evighetens morke", which means "into the darkness of appearance". This album was sold out within a few weeks and in the same year, 1994, the band released the full-length album "For all Tid" ("For all the time"), which was recorded with two new members - Tristan Bruenyard (bass guitar) and Stian Orstad (keyboards). The band's original lineup consisted of Shagrath on drums, guitarist Jodalf and Silenoz on backing vocals. But the line-up changed even before the release of Stormblast in 1996. Stromblast received high praise from black metal fans. This is one of the most important events of the group. Moreover, it was latest album, which includes all songs written and performed in Norwegian.

Theater of Tragedy (translated from English - "Theatre of Tragedy") is a Norwegian rock band, in different periods playing in various genres, from doom/death and goth metal to industrial and techno.
In 1993 Raymond, Tommy and Pål decided to form a band called "Suffering Grief". Soon they were joined by another, the youngest member, keyboardist Lorentz. The band's announcement of a search for a drummer was answered by Hein, who had left Phobia (later Enslaved) shortly before. The guys needed a bass player, and a couple of months later Eirik (ex-Painthead) joined them. At first, the band had trouble finding places to rehearse. The group didn't have female voice- only Raymond's growling. The team performed heavy brutal Death-Doom. Raymond knew early modern English and started writing songs in it; this was an original and interesting find.

The first song was called "Lament of The Perishing Roses". She was originally conceived for male voice, but Raymond got interesting idea use also the vocals of his girlfriend Liv Christine. She sang, everyone liked it, and Liv was accepted into the team. Since then, the band has had two vocalists. After recording their first song, the band decided to change their name ("Suffering Grief" seemed banal to them). For a couple of weeks it was called "Le reine noir", and then they finally came up with a new name: "Theatre of Tragedy".

In 1994, the band released their first demo, consisting of four songs, which was seriously interested in the German label "Massacre Records". An agreement was signed, and the musicians went to the Unisound studio to record their first album, Theater of Tragedy. It was produced by Dan Swanyo ("Nightingale", "Edge of Sanity"). The group quickly became famous. The combination of two contrasting vocals, a dark melancholic atmosphere, texts in the "language of Shakespeare" about love and faith, resentment and hatred - all this attracted listeners. The press spoke favorably of the new group, calling them "the children of Shakespeare."

The band undergoes its first line-up change: guitarist Pål'a Bjåstad'a was replaced by Geir Flikkeid.

After performing at the Wave Gotik Treffen festival in Leipzig, the Theater of Tragedy recorded their second album, Velvet Darkness They Fear (1996). Participated in the recording string Quartet under the direction of Nedelcho Boyadzhiev. This time the more experienced producer Pete Coleman ("Paradise Lost", "Amorphis") worked with the band in the German studio "Commusication". The Norwegians' second album was even more successful, selling over 90,000 copies of each of their two albums in Europe. Later, Liv Kristin admitted in an interview that this album is, in her opinion, the best album of the group.

As the recording of this album is being completed, the band suffers another loss: guitarist Tommy Lindahl suffers a cerebral hemorrhage. On the subsequent tour with Gorefest, Samael, Moonspell and Rotting Christ, guitarist Matze from Atrocity fills in for him.

Meanwhile, "the theater of tragedy" sets in in Liv and Raymond's personal relationship: Liv has a new boyfriend and tells Raymond that they should break up. But then Raymond did not dare to fire Liv, because she is the face of the group, it was with her that the Theater of Tragedy was associated. The offended Raymond calmed down for a while, and meanwhile Liv moved into an apartment with her boyfriend, her future husband, Alex Krull, famous producer("Crematory", "Heavenwood", "Elis", "Darkwell", etc.), as well as the leader of "Atrocity".

Liv is invited to collaborate on recording albums (in different years) with "Heavenwood", "Silke Bischoff", "Immortal Rites", "Das Ich", "Cradle of Filth" and others, and together with "Atrocity" she records "Werk 80". In 1998, Liv also released a solo album, Deus ex machina. In one of the compositions, "3 a.m.", Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost sang a duet with her. At the same time, Liv still devoted most of her time to the Theater. In 1997, the mini-album "A Rose for a Dead" was released, which contained tracks not included in "Velvet Darkness They Fear", remixed by Bruno Kramm from "Das Ich", English version immortal hit "Der tanz der schatten", called "As the Shadows Dance", and a cover of the song "Decades" by the group "Joy Division" - the only composition in the repertoire of the Theater of Tragedy, which does not contain female vocals. After the release, both guitarists leave the Theater of Tragedy, their place is taken by Frank Claussen and Tommy Olsson.

In 1998 comes out new album- Aegis. The lineup change had a significant impact on the sound, which became more electronic and less dramatic. Raymond decided not to tear his vocal cords any more and sang in his usual voice. The principle of constructing songs has changed: the form of dialogue has disappeared, clearly expressed choruses and verses have appeared in all songs. "Aégis" has a special concept, each song is about famous mythical women. Liv and Raymond get on the covers of famous German magazines ("Metal Merchant", "Metal Hammer", "Sonic Seducer").

In 1999, relations with Massacre Records were aggravated, Theater repaid their last debts - they created the single Interspective and the live album Closure: live (released later, in 2001). The band signed with the major label East West in Germany and with Nuclear Blast, which was responsible for releasing albums in all other countries. Around the same time, bassist Eric Saltre and guitarist Tommy Olzon said goodbye to them.

The year 2000 is coming. The first album with the new label, "Musique", finally saw the light of day. The group abruptly changed their style from gothic metal to industrial: Raymond's vocals were distorted by special effects, lyrics about cars, radio and electricity appeared, and the track "Space Age" is dedicated to Soviet cosmonauts. Liv Kristin again took up solo work, released the single “One Love”, a ballad that became the title theme of one of the episodes of the popular German crime series “Schimanski”.

The fifth album - "Assembly" (2002) - continued the theme of the previous edition in style. This album was produced by renowned Finnish producer Hiili Hiilesmaa ("HIM", "Apocalyptica", "Sentenced", "The 69 Eyes" and "Moonspell"). Then the band did not want to return to gothic metal at all.

Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band. There are two in Satyricon permanent member: Satir (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Frost (drums), joined by session and live musicians from time to time. Satyricon originated in the early 90s and with their first albums, they entered the cohort of bands that created the Norwegian black metal scene and are often described as the "second wave of black metal". Since the fourth album, Rebel Extravaganza, the band's music has become more mass-oriented, subsequent releases have consistently hit the mainstream music charts. Now Satyricon, together with compatriots Dimmu Borgir, are one of the most commercially successful bands in their genre.

Satyricon became one of the first black metal bands to be signed to a major record label. popular music. In 2002, the band signed with Capitol Records to release their new album Volcano in Scandinavia (Nuclear Blast was the main distributor). The famous Swedish video maker Jonas Åkerlund shot a video clip for the main hit "Fuel for Hatred" for rotation on television. Volcano debuted at number four on the Norwegian charts and sold 20,000 copies in Norway alone. The album later received a major national music award Spellemannsprisen for Metal Album of the Year, the German Alarm Award in the same category, and The Oslo Award for best album of the year. "Fuel for Hatred" was named Song of the Year at the Alarm Award. Two years later, Volcano was officially released in the US by Sony Music's subsidiary label EatUrMusic.

In 2004, a joint American tour was planned with Morbid Angel and Suffocation. Before the tour, difficulties hit the group: Frost did not receive an entry visa, and concert guitarist Arnt Gronbech cut his face in a fight on the eve of departure. As a result, Gronbech played the tour with seams, and Frost was replaced by Thrym Thorson from Emperor. In the summer, the musicians played on the largest festival Wacken Open Air. This event became a landmark, as Nocturno Culto came on stage with Satyricon and performed four songs from the Darkthrone repertoire. At the end of the year, another tour took place in the States and Canada. This time Frost was replaced by Joey Jordison from Slipknot. However, due to the fact that two guitarists were arrested on charges of rape, the last concerts were canceled.

Enslaved (ɪn'sleɪvd, translated from English as "Enslaved") is a Norwegian metal band that played black metal in its early years, and later evolved towards Viking metal with progressive elements. The group was formed in 1991 by Ivar Bjornson and Grutle Hjellson, who were 13 and 17 years old respectively at the time, later joined by Trim Thorson. This line-up recorded the first demos of Nema and Yggdrasill and the first studio album Vikingligr Veldi.
Album covers, lyrics and the ideology of the group are connected with the themes of Scandinavian mythology, Vikings and northern nature. Although Enslaved played black metal at the very beginning of their musical career, unlike other bands, the members of Enslaved never had anything to do with Satanism or church burnings and did not wear body paint. Since the album Mardraum: Beyond the Within, the band has gravitated towards progressive metal and Viking metal and eclectic style. The lyrics of the early albums are written in Norwegian and Icelandic.
During their career, the band has released eleven studio albums, two EPs, and two live shows called Live Retaliation and Return to Yggdrasill.
To date, the band's latest studio album is RIITIIR.
