She is trying to find this prince. Standing up for the honor of her friend Wakaba, Utena discovered that the ring she wears entitles her to duels in the Duel Arena.

Prior to Utena's first duel, only members of the Student Council, Kyoichi Saionji, Juri Arisugawa, Miki Kaoru, and Toga Kiryu, participated in them. It is later revealed that the Student Council also includes Nanami Kiryu, Toga's sister, and Ruka Tsuchiya. Characters

    Main characters

Utena Tenjo- Duel theme: “When? Where? Who? Which?". As a child, Utena lost her parents, and with them her will to live. But the prince appeared and said: “Baby, who endures sadness, do not lose your strength and nobility, even when you grow up. In memory of our meeting, I will give you this. This ring will lead you to me." Utena wears a man's school uniform in memory of the prince. Because of this, she has conflicts with some teachers of the school, who require her to wear the same uniform that girls wear in this school. Utena tries to act like a prince: once Saionji, a member of the Student Council, insulted the honor of her friend Wakaba. As a result, a duel took place between them, in which Utena won. Unbeknownst to Utena, the winner of the duel gets the Bride of the Rose, Anfi Himemiya. Since Utena doesn't want Anfi to be a mere plaything in the hands of the duels, she becomes protective of the Rose Bride, at first not knowing what game she's in. Utena is the most honest and honorable character in the series.

Anfi Himemiya- Anfi Himemiya keeps herself apart from all the other students, rarely appearing anywhere else, except for a small greenhouse hidden in the courtyard of one of the Academy buildings. Here she tends to the roses, and perhaps this is the only one of all the duties of the Bride of the Rose, which she does not only because it is her duty, but because she really likes flowers. She herself looks like a rose - mysterious, defenseless in appearance and at the same time possessing great power, the keeper of the sword of Dios. Only with Utena Anfi becomes as if alive and real. When Toga became the prince, Anfi again became an indifferent puppet. Anfi carefully hides his own feelings, but still, sometimes the feigned indifference of the Bride of the Rose cracks. a significant role Utena also plays in this, with the arrival of which Anfi has a hope that someday the endless cycle of duels will stop for her. Anfi is present at duels as an observer, as well as a challenge prize that goes to the winner.

Akio Ohtori - Anfi's brother, prince of Utena and the main antagonist of the anime. As Prince Dios, he helped and freed the princesses of the world, taking blow after blow, until he couldn't take it anymore. Anfi tried to save him and locked herself with him in the hut they lived in, but the people needed their prince. Seeing that Anfi is hiding it, they begin to believe that she is the witch who stole it, after which they pierce her with a thousand swords. Dios, meanwhile, loses his prowess and his place is taken by Akio, his darker side, blaming Anfi for the loss of his power. The whole point of the duels was precisely that the Academy chose the most valiant of its members, (Utena) from whom they would eventually take Akio's sword in order to get their strength back. In the manga, Dios is not one person, but two ancient gods separated after Akio tried to kill Dios in order to gain full power himself. In the animated film, Akio is long dead, while Dios is created by Anfi's magic.

Nanami Kiryu" - sister of Toga Kiryu, used several times as a humorous element in the anime. Her love for her brother borders on obsession, and her desires border on incest, which is known fact to everyone at the Academy, as she is quite aggressive towards any girls trying to take her brother's attention away from herself. As a child, she gave a kitten to her brother for his birthday, but seeing that he was taking away her brother's attention from her, she drowned him, which became a significant trauma for her child's psyche. The theme of animals and Nanami is played several times in the anime, however, knowing her past, one can understand that these events are not as fun for her as they might seem. She has a retinue of several girls following her everywhere (Yuko, Aiko and Keiko), as well as a young admirer, Mitsuru Tsuwabuki. She has a dislike for Anfi, as Nanami believes that Anfi attracts her brother's attention, which causes her to do several nasty things towards the Rose Bride. Her original goal of gaining the power of revolution is to draw her brother's attention to her, however, after she watches the scene of Anfi and Akio's physical relationship, she realizes her mistake.

Hand of Tsuchiya- a character who participates in only one series and indirectly in several others regarding the relationship between Juri and Shiori. He is former captain swordsmen and a friend of Shiori and Juri, with whom he is secretly in love. Selfish, ruthless and cruel - this is how he seems from the outside, but these qualities of his stem only from a desperate attempt to survive. Ruka is mortally ill - which is why he does not participate in the events of the anime. He engages in a duel only to open Juri's eyes to Shiori's manipulations. Having managed to do this, he ends up in the hospital and dies, no longer participating in further events.

    Duelists of the Black Rose

Mikage Soiji- Head of the Academy's popular Mikage Seminar, in which only an elite group can participate creative people. The seminar, in fact, lies in the fact that, listening to people's problems, Mikage got to the bottom of their deepest and most secret desires, pulling them out by force, breaking their psyches and, thereby, bringing them into the state he needed - into the state of insensitive robots ready to do anything to achieve their goal. He is the main antagonist of the second part of the anime, inciting people close to the Student Council members to duel with Utena. His the main objective- kill Anfi and replace her with Mamiya Chida, a terminally ill boy who can be cured this way.

Mamiya Chida - Mikage's partner, who grows black roses for would-be duelists. His goal is to become the new Bride of the Rose, replacing Anfi in order to cure his terminal illness.

Kanae Otori- Fiancée Akio and daughter of the head of the Academy. She fears Anfi and sees her as a barrier between her and Akio. It is these thoughts that lead her to Mikage and she becomes the first duelist of the Black Rose.

Shiori Takatsuki- Duel Theme: "Earth is a gallery of personalities" (Chikyuu wa Jinbutsu Chinretsushitsu)

nice student and secret love Dzuri. It is the catalyst for Juri's depression and her main secret. Shiori idealizes Juri and is secretly jealous of her, which is what she is main conflict their relationship. It was confirmed by the creators of the series that the girl did indeed have romantic feelings for Juri, but due to her low self-esteem bordering on self-loathing, she simply cannot believe that someone as perfect as Juri could love her. Even in their friendship, she cannot believe, as she believes that Juri was friends with her only to mock. Misinterpreting her friend's feelings, she takes Ruka Tsuchiya away and starts dating him, thinking that Juri is in love with him. As a Black Rose duelist, she learns about the photograph in the medallion in Juri's possession, allowing her to retrieve the sword from Juri's heart and use it to fight Utena. IN own feelings, experienced by Juri, she does not admit again for these reasons - to portray the illusion that it is she who controls their relationship and at least be a winner in some way, even at the cost of losing a friend. Participated in duels as a duelist of the black rose and was easily defeated by Utena.

"Otori Academy Middle School Entrance Ceremony"

For a year, like, in 2006, I came to the local local forum with a question, does a good yuri anime exist in nature? The answer did not come for a long time, but unexpectedly, a man with a knight on the avatar knocked on his personal door and offered to watch "Utena". Unfortunately, I didn’t find the anime itself then, but I read the manga with great interest - it stood out from the string of boring everyday shoujo, even if the cat cried in it.
For a while, I forgot about Utena, deciding that the manga would be enough. Time passed: graduation from school, the first year of the institute... And then, in a fit of nostalgia, I decided to watch anime.
And the difference between a "standout" manga and a "masterpiece" anime turned out to be colossal. I wasn't ready for this.
"Utena" are metaphors. This is a lot, a lot of visual and plot cues, the sound of which reaches much great depths than any directly spoken phrases.

Where does the action begin? From a fairy tale. The princess, inconsolable after the death of her parents, meets a handsome prince. The prince is so delighted with her stamina that he promises to meet her again if the princess retains her nobility. And as a reminder, he gives the princess a ring. Who knows if it was an engagement? And it doesn’t matter, because the princess now decides to become a prince herself.
Is this a good idea? Tell me, liar reader, my brother and my doppelgänger, who is the prince? Is it easy for them to be? And what awaits the girl who could not become a princess? After all, everyone knows that she will turn into a witch. Or not? Where is her prince then? Maybe he's not her prince. Or not a prince at all. After all, rumors circulate around the Ootori Academy about a forest that no one except members of the Student Council can visit. The sound of metal is heard from the forest and flashes of light are visible. They also say that a castle in the sky hangs over the arena, in which ...

Like what arena? Do not you know? Well, it is not necessary. Oh, have you heard of the President of the Council? He is the real prince! And his deputy, it would seem, is just as perfect, but lives with a quiet girl - even though this is forbidden! She is always bruised. And smiles so that ... Brrr! Or here is the most popular student, the head of the fencing club. Unapproachable, she does not believe in miracles, but when she looks at her medallion, everything melts. Loves some guy, I guess. Maybe.
Have you heard of a local genius? Everything is given to him! But here's his twin... She's still a jerk, although she doesn't reach the sister of the President of the Student Council.

Each member of the Council has a ring, and everyone wants something. They say that they are chosen by the End of the World, which is actually... Ugh, I forgot. So it spins on the tongue, but everything does not fly off. But I will definitely not forget this nonsense about the egg shell and the Revolution!
Do you know, do you know? Utena came again in a boyish form! How does it suit her! Not like these nasty boys, what kind of princes are they ... Rumor has it that she, too, will now enter the arena for the Rose Bride. Oh, why exactly?
Did you hear, did you hear? Do you know, do you know? After all, gossip spreads everywhere, rumors grow in order to reach the very Edge of the World, to the castle floating in the sky. Maybe this time everything will work out. Maybe the coffin lid will open. Maybe there will be a revolution.

    But how do you know.

The fairy-tale action will become more serious under the duel chants performed by the Suginami children's choir, the old-style elegant shojo drawing and pomposity will no longer seem ridiculous, and the characters will gradually acquire "humanity".

Utena is an amazing anime. There is a lot of truth in it, hidden behind fabulous curls and tense relations characters. And most importantly, unlike many other series, in "Utena" the idea is clearly traced that one should not be afraid of growing up. Yes, real world severe and cruel, yes, many idealized delusions will have to say goodbye. But only in this way we are truly free and alive.

In the 90s of the last century, the anime industry was the dawn of the Shoujo genre. by the most prominent representative This genre is still considered one of my favorite anime franchises of Sailor Moon. Quite a lot of anime of this genre came out, but not every one of them was able to win its fandom. But "Young Revolutionary Utena" is not one of them. The thing is, it's not just Shoujo, it's Shoujo Ai or Yuri. This genre first appeared back in 1971, but it only developed in the 90s, and it was in 1996 that the manga “Revolutionary Young Utena” was released, and a year later, in 1997, the anime series of the same name was released. And I must say, he passed the test of time.

The first thing I can praise for this anime characters. Almost every character in the series is interesting and attractive. The emphasis is primarily on the main characters Utena Tenjo and Anfi Himemiya. And you know, these are some of my favorite anime characters. But some secondary characters are just as interesting.

The main strength of this show is the plot. It is quite interesting, original and exciting. Great attention is paid here to philosophy and surrealism, which are more than enough here. The speeches of the characters make you think about the meaning of these phrases. And I have to say it goes to the series only for the benefit.

The animation in the series is generally good. For the 97th year, it looks very tolerant and decent. True, some frames are repeated from series to series, which is not good.

The music in the anime is just amazing. It is also well chosen, and the opening theme deserves special praise, because it perfectly conveys the spirit of the series.

Well, of course, it is also worth noting the Russian voice acting from the now deceased studio MC Entertainment. It is executed just fine, and Anfi's voice in this voice acting deserves a separate plus. Lord, when I hear this voice, it immediately becomes pleasant in my soul.

However, the show does have its flaws. First, the undisclosedness of some secondary characters, and the second ending. Yes, the ending of the anime seemed to me somehow mediocre, I expected something more epic. It is also worth noting that in the series there are many moments with assault on women, to be honest, I have never seen so many BBPEs in any anime. Well, everyone will perceive this fact differently.

As a result, I can say that it turned out very interesting and has already become cult anime Yuri genre. It also has interesting story, And attractive characters. By the way, some compare this series with Code Geass, which I also adore, but believe me, Code Geass and Revolutionary Girl Utena have nothing in common except for similar main characters. Well, I will recommend “Young Revolutionary Utena” for viewing, I am sure you will like it.

    What is this cartoon about?

Incest, pedophilia, homosexual relationships, suicidality, rape (albeit metaphorical), animal life, assault, seduction of minors and other rich bouquet of all kinds of cruelties and perversions - this is far from full list what you will see in this cartoon ... And there will also be flying elephants!

    Sorry again.
    What is this cartoon about?

ABOUT true friendship and selfless love, about honor and nobility, about the desire to follow your ideals despite all obstacles, and the desire to keep your ideals as pure and high as they were in childhood, even after childhood inevitably ends. About self-giving, about faith in miracles, which is sometimes so difficult to find... About overcoming oneself - one's fears, one's insecurity, one's weakness, one's low desires, one's stupidity, one's selfishness... About something so main and important, that it is impossible to formulate this in the words of Dostoevsky: "If only you wrote whole volumes and explained your thought for thirty-five years."

I first watched "Utena" a year and a half ago. 39 episodes and a movie in two days. I swallowed this cartoon in two days and then digested it for almost half a year ... For the first couple of weeks, I generally walked like a sack on the head - this cartoon just took out my brain and, probably, still does not want to give it back. I read a lot of reviews then, an interview with director Kunihiko Ikuhara, even found working materials for the cartoon right up to the rough storyboard - I wanted to understand so much: how, how did people think of doing such a thing ?!

When I first started watching the series, I already knew that I had to watch until the end: I rarely watch anime without first reading reviews. Yes, and the sad experience of the "Evangelion" abandoned in the middle ... Which I nevertheless took on the second attempt and now humbly join those who preach about the genius of this work. Many compare "Utena" and "Evangelion", and rightly so - Ikuhara himself wrote that he was inspired by the creation of Hideaki Anno. Interesting fact- some characters in these cartoons were voiced by the same seiyuu. Personally, I think that these cartoons are talking about the same thing, it's just cast in different forms. But when you understand main point, it already becomes, in general, it doesn’t matter: the heroes fight on large robots or on swords and swords, whether they agree to pilot the Evangelion or put a rose in their buttonhole. After all, the main thing is for what, in the name of what, they do it. Everyone has their own motives, but to accept the challenge, and not to run away from it, not to run away from oneself, means at least one step closer to the Revolution.

"Utena" tightens gradually and inevitably. And if in the first episodes I frankly squandered some moments, then later I could not miss a single second of the series. Replays? It was when watching this cartoon that I, perhaps, for the first time understood the meaning of the sacredness of such a concept as "ritual". Preparation for a duel is a ritual, it is an opportunity for the viewer to comprehend what he has just been shown and the opportunity to predict what will be shown now.
Truly, this cartoon is like a mirror. Those who seek meaning will find it. Those who do not seek will remain meaningless. Here, the truths inherent in the plot are not chewed up and are not served on a silver platter. This cartoon requires internal intellectual and emotional work, it is impossible to watch it passively - then it is better not to look at all. Don't expect its creators to answer all your questions for you. Don't expect them to ask all the questions for you.

The graphics are annoying at first. I have repeatedly convinced myself that even the most wildly designed characters become stunningly beautiful when you get to know them better, when you become not indifferent to them, when you start not only to empathize with them - to see yourself in them. Memesis... After watching the first episodes, the backbone of the main characters seemed to me a bunch of moral freaks. I thought: “Well, now the idealized main character will give them a rustle, teach them the truth-womb!” The standard antagonism for such plots suggested itself good guy- a bad guy. "But with each new series with surprise, you begin to discover that the heroine is not as idealized as it seemed at first, and the "gathering of moral freaks" turns out to be people with deep spiritual wounds, with problems that they cannot solve without help main character. And the expected antagonism turns into something completely different, which is impossible to formulate in words ...

Music deserves to be downloaded as an OST and put into the player. Believe it or not, Sunny Garden was the first thing I learned to play the piano, when I first sat down to play it at the age of 25.)

Directing. She is simply brilliant. I, perhaps, will agree that the cartoon is not very well drawn, but HOW it is directed! A classic three-act development of the conflict with a climax at the end of each act, both at the level of the meta-plot and in the micro-plots of the sidelines. Reminiscences, parallel editing, forcing suspense, metaphor and interweaving of plot allusions... What is the Shadow Theater alone worth! I watched these inserts several times, just to understand what they are about, how it relates to the plot of the series. The metaphors are just great!
Amazingly written motivation of the characters, absolutely alive, completely falling into the character of each character of the reaction. Remember how the scene in which Juri tries to punch Ruka in the face is played out! And crazy Nanami? At the end of the series, she becomes almost the most adequate character and, with consciousness completely uncharacteristic of her, tries to straighten the brain of Utena, who is in prostration. Tsuwabuki in a slipping sheet, Onion Princess Wakaba, Mickey's mouse playing music in empty rooms, Toga and Saionji decomposed on the hood. Looking out of the darkness with almost demonic glasses Anfi...

Prince, princess, witch - like stone, scissors, paper from the game known to all. The conditions of the game are stipulated, but it is impossible to predict which combination each of the characters will throw. Who will end up being the real prince? real princess, a real witch... What? Do you still think that these are three different characters? At some point in my viewing, I generally had a suspicion that in this cartoon there is only one character - this is the viewer himself, and everyone he sees is just cockroaches in his head. And these cockroaches have their own cockroaches... This is no longer just a mirror - these are two mirrors placed opposite each other.

The ending in the cartoon is truly Buddhist - there is no death, there is only immortal life, generating itself in ever new worlds. For some reason, she reminded me of the ending of Maria Semyonova's books about the Wolfhound. The circle closes and at that moment you understand something very big and important. And it is unbearably painful to look at the members of the Student Council, who could not break out of their world of illusions... What could be more sad than to die unborn?

It seems to me that you can write about this cartoon endlessly. And still not being able to tell what it is about. With the same success, you can ask yourself the question all your life: why was I born in this world? - and never answer it even after death. Because there is no death, there is only a new awakening - "now it's my turn to go to you." After watching "Utena" you begin to believe that this is really so.

In a word, gentlemen who have ears to hear, let them hear. You cannot enter this cartoon twice and after watching it you will never be the same again.

P.S. For those who liked "Utena", I would also like to recommend another cartoon about the revolution, drawn 18 years earlier - "Rose of Versailles" for viewing. They have something in common, although they are about different things. And, yes, the "Rose of Versailles" also needs to be watched to the end - you just need to endure the beginning there, then it will be fine.

One of my favorite anime franchises, the Sailor Moon franchise, is still considered the most prominent representative of this genre.

And I must say that this is only for the benefit of the series.

The first one is the non-disclosure of some secondary characters, and the second one is the ending. Yes, the ending of the anime seemed to me somehow mediocre, I expected something more epic. It is also worth noting that in the series there are many moments with assault on women, to be honest, I have never seen so many BBPEs in any anime. Well, everyone will perceive this fact differently.

As a result, I can say that it turned out to be a very interesting and already cult anime of the Yuri genre. It has an interesting plot and engaging characters. By the way, some compare this series with Code Geass, which I also adore, but believe me, Code Geass and Revolutionary Girl Utena have nothing in common except for similar main characters. Well, I will recommend “Young Revolutionary Utena” for viewing, I am sure you will like it.
