The famous Commissioner Cattani in an unequal struggle with the Sicilian mafia. In the 80s, the adventures of a fearless policeman were followed by the entire Soviet Union. Three decades later, everyone's favorite series "Octopus" returns to the screens again. Viewers of the MIR TV channel will be the first to see it.
“Your company makes a gift to viewers. This is the world premiere. Completely restored series in HD quality. As far as it was possible for the film of 1983,” said Tim Shevtsov, content distributor for the film supplier company Sprut.
The film was restored in Italy for 2.5 years. The full digital version was prepared for the 30th anniversary of the film in 2014, but was only made in time for the 33rd anniversary. Processing old film is a completely manual process.
“It happens that you can do 50 meters in a day, and sometimes you can do 1000. It all depends on the quality of the film. It happens that you take a film, and it falls apart in your hands,” says film restorer Svetlana Lemp.
Gosfilmofond knows what it's like to feel every frame. One episode of the film is two kilometers of film, 48 episodes - almost a hundred. You can go around Moscow along the Moscow Ring Road. Centimeter by centimeter, restorers are looking for glues undermining. Then dirt and dust are removed from the whole film, cleaned with ultrasound and chemicals. No employee will ever tell you how long a process will take.
“They are all individual, each film. She has her own relationship. They dry differently and need to be handled differently,” said Nadezhda Saplina, head of the Gosfilmofond restoration section.

After that, the digitization itself takes place. A reel of film is placed in a special scanner, and the film is pulled over the lens. From each frame, the device takes a digital picture.
“Once we get a digital version of a film, once it's scanned, we can do whatever we want with it. Coloring like Cinderella, removing scratches, dirt, trembling and the most time-consuming is color correction. We can return our favorite, legendary films to the viewer, which will allow the viewer not to switch to another channel,” said Vladimir Kotovsky, head of the Gosfilmofond digital processing section.
“The work was carried out titanic. This can be compared to the restoration of frescoes in Sistine Chapel”, - concluded Tim Shevtsov.
The digital version is more than four million frames. Each image was also processed manually. But it was worth it: it seems that the picture was not edited, but simply shot again. It was as if there were no three decades between that Cattani and the present.
