A wise and brave Indian is a big serpent. Chingachgook - Big Serpent

29.03.2019

A character in a series of novels by an American writer. North American Indian from the Mohican tribe. A young leader, a brave and fair warrior, respected by friends, inspires fear in enemies, kind and wise.

History of creation

Fenimore Cooper - 19th writer century. Then the type of "noble savage" was widespread in the literature. Chingachgook refers just to him.

In that era, there was an opinion that people who had never encountered modern civilization, have some innate nobility and virtue that distinguishes them from the "spoiled" civilized man. Idealized characters of this type were displayed in the literature of the era of romanticism, which includes the work of Fenimore Cooper.

In addition to Cooper's noble Indians, Thomas Main Reed's chief Osceola is shown as such, a character named Queequeg in Herman Melville's Moby Dick. The image of the "noble savage" continues to live in popular culture and in last time was embodied in the Avatar film series, where aliens are presented in this vein.

Last of the Mohicans

"The Last of the Mohicans" - the second and most famous novel Fenimore Cooper about the white hunter Nathaniel Bumpo and the Indian Chingachgook. The heroes are trying to save two daughters of one of the British commanders. The girls ended up on the territory of the English fort just at the time when the Indians with tacit consent allied French massacre there. Trying to save the eldest of the sisters, the only son of Chingachgook dies, leaving the hero "the last of the Mohicans."

No less famous is the novel "St. In this, the hero is helped by the same hunter Bumpo, who was nicknamed St. John's wort. Bumpo is accompanied by a fellow traveler - Harry March, who wants to get attention from the beautiful Judy Hatter. Judy lives on the lake with her old father and younger sister. At the end of the book, the reader is in for a lot of tragic moments, but Chingachgook still manages to return the bride, who later becomes the hero's wife.

Beloved Chingachguk stands out among her fellow tribesmen with a beautiful, pleasant and quiet voice, for which she received the name. Wa-Ta-Wa is the Delaware word for "quiet, quieter." The heroine possessed, in addition to charming voice, sharp mind and beauty. She gave birth to Chingachguk's only son, who was named Uncas.

In the third novel, Pathfinder, Chingachgook and Nathaniel Bumpo help the sailor Charles and his young niece Mabel to get to the fortress on the shores of Lake Ontario, where the girl's father serves.

Cooper wrote and published the first book in the series, The Pioneers, but according to internal chronology, this novel is the fourth. The novel, in particular, describes how Chingachgook died. The hero who lived through so much dangerous adventures, dies peacefully as an old man, after which Nathanael Bumpo, a friend of the Indians, sets off to look for new lands in the west.

Screen adaptations

In 1990, the director's two-part film "St. John's Wort" was released in the USSR. The film is based on the novel by Fenimore Cooper. The role of Chingachguk is played by Georgy Pitskhelauri, and another actor is voiced by.

In the film, Chingachgook's beloved Wa-Ta-Wa fell into the hands of people from a hostile tribe. The hero, in order to free the woman, resorts to the help of a friend - white hunter Nathaniel Bumpo, nicknamed St. John's wort, drawing him into a military conflict between Indian tribes.

The film gives an idealized picture of the life of the prairie Indians, shows how the first European colonists lived in North America, how their relationship with the indigenous inhabitants of this land was built. The film shows the point of view of both.

Before that, in 1967, another adventure western based on the novel "St. John's Wort" was released in the GDR under the name "Chingachgook - Big Serpent". The role of Chingachgook was played by a Yugoslav actor and stuntman who became famous for the roles of the Indians. In 1983, the actor played the leader White Feather in the film of the same name, before that - the Indian Vigilant Falcon from the westerns "White Wolves" and "Trace of the Falcon". In total, Gojko Mitic starred in 13 westerns filmed by the German film studio DEFA. In the Russian dub, Chingachgook was voiced by an actor.

Here the Indians find themselves pawns in the war between Britain and France. The British want to take over French colonies in North America. Alien troops set the local tribes against each other. The French turned the Huron tribe against the Delaware tribe. Chingachgook's bride, Wa-Ta-Wa, the leader's daughter, falls into the hands of the Hurons. The hero, together with a friend, a white hunter nicknamed St. John's wort, is going to free the girl.

Released in 1992 American film adaptation novel "The Last of the Mohicans" under the same name. Directed by Michael Mann. The role of Chingachgook was played by actor Russell Means, an Indian by origin, public figure and rights activist.

The script of the film differs significantly from Cooper's novel. The plot is as follows: the Indians of the Huron tribe attack a military escort, which accompanies the daughters of an English colonel on the way to the fort. Chingachgook and his son Uncas, along with Hawkeye, a white hunter who became Chingachgook's adopted son, set off for a port besieged by the French to rescue women and help the surviving British.

Having penetrated the fort, the heroes learn that a traitor has wound up in the camp of the British - this is an Indian, an escort guide. The military authorities refuse to provide reinforcements to the British, and the fort has to be surrendered. Women again find themselves in the hands of the Hurons. Chingachgook and Hawkeye try to save them, but a tragic ending awaits many of the heroes of the tape.

Quotes

Many people remember the phrases of Chingachgook from Soviet film"St. John's wort":
“- And what is this mug?
- It's not a mug! This is the Great Serpent. He brings butterflies to life!
“- She [Wa-Ta-Wa] is so young, fragile, tender, she cannot be treated roughly.
- But Chingachgook loves Wa-Ta-Wa very much.
- Promise that you will never beat her, never force her to carry heavy loads, chop wood, tan hides, reap bread, give birth to many children. She's so...
“Why is she needed then?”

I mentioned Goiko Mitic last year, but I decided to publish the material about him this year. Fortunately, there is a good reason: on June 13, he turned 75 years old!

He planned to become a coach physical education and connect your life with sports. Short in stature (1.8 m, 83 kg) but very strong build, he could be called the "Balkan Schwarzenegger". But fate decreed otherwise, and he was remembered as the chief Indian of the Land of the Soviets.

On a hot summer day on June 13, 1940, he was born into the family of a farmer in the town of Leskovac (now Serbia). But the war came and father Zhivojin left his family and went to the front to fight the Nazi invaders, taking an active part in the partisan struggle. The boy was raised by his mother and grandparents.
As a teenager, he was fond of handball, football, athletics and gymnastics and made plans to become a sports coach, becoming a graduate of the Belgrade Institute of Physical Education. Later, he became interested in rowing and was even a member of the Yugoslav national team in this sport. However, everything changed with the beginning of the 60s, when he was invited to act in films.

The future Indian made his debut as a stuntman in the film "Lancelot and the Queen." But soon he moved to East Berlin (Germany was then divided), where, thanks to the films of the DEFA studio, he starred in the role of the Indians who brought him success and world fame. Remember the lines of the Kharkov group "Different People":
"A poster hangs that somewhere
Cinema from DEFA studio
You'll slip through without a ticket
And Gojko Mitich forever!"

It was the DEFA studio (abbreviated from Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft) that became the turning point in the life of the actor. In 1963-1965, he starred in his first Indian roles in five West German westerns based on the novels of Karl May, among them: Apache Gold, Winnetu - the son of Inchu Chun, Among the Kites, etc. In 1965, he played the main role Tokey-Into in the film by the Czech director Jozsef Mach "Sons of the Big Dipper" (GDR, Yugoslavia).

In 1967, he played Chingachgook in the film "Chingachgook - Big Serpent" directed by Konrad Pentzold based on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper "Deerslayer". Goiko Mitic becomes extremely popular in the Soviet Union, the favorite of teenagers throughout of Eastern Europe. A clear profile, a beautiful figure, fearlessness and nobility, a proud look, wonderful body control and undoubted acting talent of Gojko Mitic made him the idol of millions of moviegoers. I will add that the role of Chingachgook in the 90s in one of the Hollywood films was also played by Russell Means, a native Indian, a fighter for the rights of Indians, now deceased. For material about Russell Means, see the article "Heroes of AIM"
In 1988, the last thirteenth film in the series of westerns about the Indians was released - "Hunters on the Prairie of Mexico" directed by Hans Knötschtz. In the 80s and 90s, individual films with the participation of Gojko Mitic were purchased for distribution in the United States.
Goiko Mitic tried to get away from the Indian theme - he played the role of Fabiano Fabiani in the film adaptation of Victor Hugo's play "Mary Tudor" - the film "Love and the Queen" (1977).

Filmed on TV, plays in television series: Roberto Florani in the TV series Forbidden Love (1995-2008), Archive of Death, etc.
In 1985-1989, Gojko Mitic directed five feature television films for children about the adventures of two dolls "Jan and Tini".
In 1973-1974, he acted as the scriptwriter for the films "Apache" and "Ulzana. Fate and Hope".

Today Goiko Mitic lives in the Berlin suburb of Köpenick. Since 1975 he has been working in the theater. Since 1992 - actor of the Mecklenburg Theater (Schwerin).
From the last theatrical works- Indian in the play "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", a role in the musical "Alex Sorbas".
Since the mid-1980s he has been playing the role of Winnetou at the annual Karl May Theatrical Festival in Bad Sageberg near Hamburg. Leading in the 80s sports program on television in the GDR.

In 1996, memoirs came out of print - "Gojko Mitic: Memoirs", Frankfurt am Main, Berlin. Ullstein Publishing.

Until 2000, Goiko Mitic remained a citizen of Yugoslavia (Serbia), then he took German citizenship (Germany).

Vigilant Falcon named ... Wolf (Interview 2001)
Köpenick, the easternmost district of former East Berlin. Here, in the bar of the Marriott Hotel, a luxurious super-hotel on the picturesque bank of the Spree, I was assigned a meeting by a man whose name sounded like a symbol of courage, kindness and justice to the boys of the 60s and 70s. Films with his participation, according to own confession, stared Valery Todorovsky. For some, he remained in the memory of the Son of the Big Dipper or Chingachgook, for others - Osceola or Tekumze. For me, the legendary Goiko Mitich remained the Vigilant Falcon for the rest of his life.

* * *
In those years, with the onset of warm days, forest plantations and lawns along many rivers of Eastern Europe became "Indian forests" and "prairies", cord and fringe disappeared from shops, willow bushes thinned out, and bruises and scratches on boyish elbows and knees were a matter of special pride - they were marks from arrows and darts. Schoolchildren went ten times to each film about the Indians, and in the games they literally “knocked out” for themselves the right to be the “leader of the Redskins”.

... Sitting in a comfortable cabin silently rolling through the whole of Berlin train, I thought about the upcoming meeting. In order to meet with the idol of my childhood, for three months I sifted through all the telephone directories to no avail, called a lot of institutions - “the main Indian of Europe” was “elusive”.
But still, luck smiled at me: one good friend, having got a job at the Babelsberg film studio, one fine day came face to face with legendary actor, and on the last day of my stay in Germany, I went to the former suburbs, afraid of not recognizing my childhood idol.
Vigilant Falcon, as befits a real Indian, appeared suddenly, but I could not help but recognize him. Mitich, who has been living in Berlin since 1967, has hardly changed: the same courageous cheekbones, a penetrating look with a sly look, a strong torso. The handshake is steel, the gait is soft, but confident. Gray hair in thick hair and wrinkles on the forehead unobtrusively remind of age.

- How old are you?
“I’m already a member of the 60-year-olds club,” Mitic laughs, orders coffee, gently stops my hand with my wallet: “You are my guest ...

- Tell us about yourself: how did the film actor Goiko Mitic appear?
— I was born on June 13, 1940 in former Yugoslavia, in the town of Leskovets. Our family was small: mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, me and my brother Dragan. My brother, unlike me, chose a decent profession, he is a lawyer.

- And what "indecent profession" did you study?
- I was an avid athlete, as a boy I firmly decided that I would become a physical education teacher. After graduating from high school, he entered the Belgrade physical culture institute but never became a teacher. Many films were being shot in Yugoslavia at that time, a myriad of joint productions were opening. Some student athletes, including me, worked part-time on the set. Basically it was extras, but not ordinary. I did scenes that required riding skills, difficult and dangerous stunts. And during the filming of one English film the director - it was Conuel Wilde - noticed that I was very similar to the main character, whose role, in fact, he himself played. Soon I was approved for the position of his understudy. I was then 22 years old.

Was the movie about Indians?
- No, the events of the film unfolded in the Middle Ages. Every day I put on heavy armor, took a huge pike in one hand, a shield in the other, and with two fingers I held the horse by the reins. The essence of the trick was that about two hundred more horsemen rushed after me, I fell, and they rushed past me, above me.

- In short, a form of suicide ...
- You may not believe it, but in all my life I have not received a single serious injury. In dozens of takes of hundreds of the most incredible stunts, I had no fractures or dislocations.

- By the way, could you share the secret of the youth of a 60-year-old man?
- Everything is very simple. I rarely drink, and only good wines. I don't smoke, but I do sports every day. A man must take care of himself. Belly at any age is a sign of promiscuity.
...So, this was my first experience in a big movie. And the first success. The specialists then said: “Boy! You did great!” Soon there was another job, then another, and one fine day I realized that the choice life path made.

But still you were not an actor.
- Not for long ... One professor came to the gym of our institute, a teacher theatrical art. He needed to keep himself in shape. And I needed his knowledge. I started taking private lessons.

— Mr. Mitic, do you remember your first acting work?
- Certainly. It was an Italian film. Signor de la Notte - a small role with almost no text, the Venetian catacombs, the clanging of swords, dark nooks and crannies ...

- Well, the first big role- still the image of an Indian?
- There was such a series of West German films about Winnet. In the first of them, the role was small, in “Vinetta-2” - more, and in the third tape - “Among the kites” - I already starred in one of the central roles. With the prime ministers, we traveled a good half of Germany, and everywhere I was well received ...
Then there was a joint project Studio "DEFA" from the GDR, Yugoslav filmmakers and Czech director Josef Mach. 1965 "Sons of the Big Dipper" - my first the main role and my first acquaintance with the GDR. I remember the script really sunk into my soul: I literally swallowed it in one night! Everything about it was different from the John Wayne films that I saw as a child, from those that I starred in before. For the first time, an Indian nation was not represented by a kind of wild horde that ravaged the settlers with barbarian raids. Courageous, persistent people who fought for their independence appeared on the screens. And this, generally speaking, was historically true.
I remember that it was easy for me to communicate with the Czech director: they rescued my native language and Russian, which I studied at school as a compulsory subject.
The film was a huge success in many countries. Together with him, fame came to me, my role was fixed, and the Indian theme became popular. Soon, two German directors, one after the other, shoot as many as twelve films on an Indian theme. 1966 - Chingachgook by Konrad Petzold. 1967 - "Trace of the Falcon" by Gottfried Kollwitz, then - his own "Apache", and again Petzold with "White Wolves" and "Oceola" ...

— I heard that all these films were shot in record time. short time, and many of them in the USSR ...
- It took no more than 60 days to shoot one tape. We were looking for nature similar to landscapes North America, Mexico. That's why they filmed at your place: in the Caucasus, in the Crimea, and most often in Uzbekistan. Funny story occurred near Samarkand, during the filming of "Apache". We needed extras riding horses, and we turned to a neighboring village for help. There were many who wanted to, but… God, what an effort it took us to persuade the “Apache” from the “Navoi” collective farm to undress to the waist, and then calm them down: they laughed so hard at each other!..

- And with you "comedies" happened?
- At the beginning of my career, there was one very funny case. Oh, this German grammar! .. I already knew the language quite well, but, like all foreigners, I got confused in verb forms. In one episode, I had to say one phrase, something like “We fired at the convoy of pale faces!” ... And the verb “schiessen”, as you know, in the past tense is damnably confused with “scheissen”. In short, the scene came out next. A motor, a clapperboard, a valiant warrior in combat plumage at full gallop stops his horse and, already in close-up, with a formidable expression on his face, reports to the leader: “We crap the wagon train of the pale-faced ...!” All film crew just collapsed on the ground laughing.

Let's go back to your youth. What sport did you do?
- Athletics, handball, football, gymnastics, but almost everyone. After all, I wanted to become a physical education teacher who should be able to do everything. I was not a pro and did not participate in the championships, although I could make a good javelin thrower.

- I subscribed to “Junge Welt” in my youth and I remember the picture on the first page: Gojko Mitic in gymnastic leotards performs an exercise on the rings ...
- This is a frame from the TV movie "Second Love - a Public Man." He had an ideological background, calling on young people to go in for sports and increase the sports glory of the GDR. Many then worked with children on voluntary, and I played the role of such a social coach. I was connected with the TV of the GDR by the so-called "sport watch" - a series of programs for children. In general, there have been many works in film and television in which I am not only an Indian. In the television movie Love and the Queen, based on Hugo's Mary Stuart, I played the part of the Queen's lover. Was Spartacus, d'Artagnan, Robin Hood. Recently starred in a TV movie on ZDF as a Mexican.

— How many works are behind Goiko Mitic? Which actor did you particularly enjoy working with?
— I have starred in more than forty films, and it is easy for me to work with all of them. We always had one team, one common goal. No squabbles and intrigues… Truly friendly relations connected me with Rolf Hoppe, my partner and eternal “pale-faced enemy” in Indian films. Poor Rolf... He got hurt not only on the set. The fact is that the enemies of the Vigilant Falcon were hated as much as they loved him. Rolf, on the other hand, was taken literally by the audience outside the screen, identifying with the images of the villains that he perfectly created in the cinema. He complained more than once that his daughter at school every day in tears proves to her classmates that her dad is kind and good and that in fact he is a friend of the Vigilant Falcon.

- Are you married?
- Not yet. And never was. I am not alone, but a piece of paper and a stamp are not as important to me as just a strong union of a man and a woman.

How do you like the unification of Germany? After all, there are problems ...
“Whatever they say, it’s great. On the eve of the 10th anniversary, many artists responded to this event. For example, with the author's program I went to different cities countries. And what happened in Dresden, where the main celebrations took place! Thousands of people in the streets and squares, noise, laughter ... The fall of the Berlin Wall - greatest event in the history of Europe. Of course, its ruins in the minds of people - both East and West - will interfere with true unity for a long time to come, it will take a lot of time to overcome the remains of this wall, you need to find the courage to start a lot inside yourself from scratch ...

How are you, for example?
- After the fall of the Wall, many East Germans were left out of work, the actors too - after all, not all were known to Western film producers. In this regard, I may have been more fortunate than others. And the most interesting thing is that my second birth as an actor took place at the Babelsberg studio (former DEFA) in the Marlene Dietrich pavilion, the very one where I first auditioned for the role in the film “Sons of the Big Dipper” ... Today I am already regularly invited to act in films, on television, play on stage. And, of course, every summer there is the famous Karl May Festival in Bad Sageberg. The current performance open sky based on May's novel "The Oil Prince", in total watched by more than seven thousand viewers. The role of the “pale-faced” villain, swindler and murderer was played by Matthew Carey. And I was the leader of the Indians for the ninth time. The splendor of these performances is not only in the spectacular crowd scenes, but also in the ability to use animals: horses, dogs, birds of prey ...

- I have long wanted to know: have you met real Indians and have they watched films with your participation?
— Yes, but it became possible only after the unification. One American journalist became interested in my films, then showed them on reservations. We met, and at one fine moment I was visiting real Indians, who, by the way, observe their ancient traditions. They adopted the Vigilant Falcon. I felt myself happy man when our helicopter was greeted with drums and songs. The Indians all wondered how a pale-faced European had created such truthful images of their ancestors. And most importantly, I was accepted into the tribe. The leader said so: “You are our brother!” So now I'm a real Indian. Named Wolf.

But why wolf?
“One evening near the fire, the old leader asked me to close my eyes, concentrate and imagine that I was an animal. At the same time, it was impossible to dictate an image to your subconscious, everything had to happen by itself. I saw myself as a wolf. After I told the chief about this, he gave me this name.

- Bundeswehr troops participated in the military campaign in Yugoslavia ...
— This topic is not only complicated… It hurts me — during one of the NATO bombings my mother died… No, I have no anger at the soldiers and officers. I hate politicians who play with our destinies, who decide for God who will live and who will die.

What are your wishes to the readers of this interview?
Peace, happiness and good health! In parting, Goiko Mitich left his autograph and wish to the readers of RT, and in Russian ...

Chris Columbus' film "A Night with Beth..."

Did you know that the "father" of the American adventure novel, the first North American writer to achieve worldwide fame, wrote his first book ... on a bet? And today is his birthday, by the way!

James Fenimore Cooper was born in 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, but soon the Cooper family moved to the state of New York, where he founded the village of Cooperstown. Tam James Fenimore receives a school education, after which he goes to study at Yale University, but, without completing the course, he enters the maritime service, which takes place on Lake Ontario, where US military ships were created in those days.

In 1811 Fenimore Cooper marries Frenchwoman Susan Augusta Delancey. Once, while reading to his wife some boring novel, Fenimore threw it away in his hearts and declared that it was not at all difficult to write something better. His wife took him at his word, there was nowhere to retreat. So in 1820 the first novel was published. Cooper"Precaution". The author published it anonymously, knowing the prejudice of English literary society To American writers. And he did the right thing. Critics were ruthless, but not because of the origin of the author, but because the novel showed complete ignorance of the author of the real England, where the novel takes place.

But cooper does not lose courage, criticism probably only encourages him. And in 1821 his second novel, The Spy, or the Tale of no man's land". What provided this novel with success, and its author with worldwide recognition? They were provided with a good choice of characters. They became brave and proud people"frontier" - the border zone of development by the colonizers of the Wild West. They do not live by the laws of a prim society of immigrants, but they honor and respect the traditions of the Indians.

Film "- Big Serpent" (1967) - film adaptation of the novel Fenimore Cooper "St. John's wort, or the First Warpath" (GDR)

Such a find was the reader's favorite image of Nathaniel (Natty) Bumpo, who first "revived" in the novel "Pioneers" (1823) and continued his journey in the novels "The Last of the Mohicans" (1926), "The Prairie" (1827), "Pathfinder" ( 1840), "St. John's wort, or the First Warpath" (1841). About the features of this original character, created by Cooper, can be judged by his nicknames on the pages of the novel - Hawkeye, St. John's Wort, Pathfinder, Long Carbine, Leather Stocking.

A series of five "red-skinned" novels Cooper- this is a kind of adventure epic against the background of the history of wars between two colonial powers, where on the one hand - the British colonies, on the other - the French who own Canada and their Indian allies. Natty Bumpo clearly does not support the "civilizing" predation of his fellow tribesmen and their unwillingness to reckon with the rights of the Indians. But the author's skill in describing the virgin nature of America, the relief of vivid characters, the indisputable success with the reader forces critics to recognize James Fenimore Cooper as the American Walter Scott.

K / f "Pathfinder" (1987) - Soviet adaptation of the novel Fenimore Cooper Pathfinder with Andrei Mironov as Marquis Sanglie

Even after the release of the novel "The Spy" in 1821, the spouses coopers move to New York, where the writer immediately becomes a prominent figure in the circles of writers fighting for national authenticity American Literature. Success Fenimore Cooper in 1826 he even brought him to the post of American consul, and for 7 whole years he was a writer in Europe.

This life stage appeared in the trilogy about times European Middle Ages- the novels "Bravo, or In Venice", "Heidenmeier" and "The Executioner" (1831-1833), as well as in five volumes of travel notes.

In addition to European themes and the epic about the conquest of the Wild West, there were Fenimore Cooper another direction, to which he treated with special love and awe, is the "marine" novels. Weakness in front of the sea and ships originated in the writer during his service on Lake Ontario. This is how novels were born. Cooper"The Pilot" (1823), "The Siege of Boston" (1825), "The Red Corsair" (1828), "Sorceress of the Sea" (1830) and, finally, the fundamental work "History of the American Navy" (1839).

Movie "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992) - American film adaptation novel of the same name Fenimore Cooper

The last 30 years of life, the most fruitful, Fenimore Cooper spent in parental home in Cooperstown. Died in 1851.

Artworks Fenimore Cooper filmed more than 30 times, boys and girls read his books for the third century in a row. And we'll go read!
