It seems to me that this story is not only and not so much about cancer. Emphasis on something else: this is a film about life, about how to become free, open your heart to love and the whole world. The author of the novel, John Green, says that " short life can be interesting," and he's right.
Both the book and the film are not like what is usually written and filmed in this genre. Is not traditional history the fight against the disease, there are no common clichés in it ...
And from this the story becomes even deeper and more beautiful. I was very touched by the book and didn't want to go on set just to show how good I can be at crying and acting powerful emotions. Everyone who took part in the creation of the picture sought to convey the essence and mood of the book. For me, this was the most important thing.
Was it hard to tune in to the right emotions?
The most difficult scenes were given in which you had to cry a lot - it was hard both emotionally and physically. After them, I needed to somehow be distracted - I would come home, cook popcorn for myself and go to bed.
Which scenes were the easiest?
Love. They were different from most love scenes in films for young people. It seems to me that very often our society is somehow condescending towards the feelings of teenagers: “Yes, it’s very nice, but they don’t know what real love". Looking at adults, one would like to ask: “Do you know yourself?”
Your partner in the film was Ansel Elgort, with whom you also starred in Divergent. How did you work together?
Ansel and I became very close. While working on the film The Fault in Our Stars, we visited several hospitals and met with cancer patients. We both learned a lot from them. I'm glad he got the role of Gus. At the audition, he played so that we just opened our mouths. I then thought that it was better not to find anyone better than Ansel.
