The concept of maho-shojo was based on a combination of traditional Japanese views on women and the Western mentality, where special attention is paid to growing up and the formation of character. Magical girls usually access their power using some sort of magical item, such as a locket, magic wand, ribbon and the like. To activate the force, concentration on an object, various manipulations with it, the pronunciation of appropriate phrases, various acrobatic techniques, and sometimes elements of martial arts are used. The girl usually reincarnates, for example, her clothes change, appearance, sometimes age. Frames of such reincarnation, called henshin, do not change from series to series, which leads to significant cost savings in the production of the series. Sometimes, although the appearance of the heroine does not change too much for the viewer (so that the connection with the character is not lost), other characters cannot recognize her in her reincarnated form.
One of the key features of the magic shoujo genre is that the main character has to hide her supernatural abilities from others, which leads to the need to lead a double life. Other frequently used templates are mysterious handsome men who also have special abilities and come to the rescue in difficult moments; talking pets or magical creatures that serve as helpers and advisors; a close friend who does not have magical abilities and is unaware of the existence of magic (as a rule, a friend is a constant target for attack by hostile forces).
The concepts of love, peace, good, evil, friendship, etc., as a rule, are very idealized and serve as the motive for the actions of the main characters. Behind the constant sorties of hostile forces is usually the main enemy, who can only be defeated by the end of the series; sometimes after the victory the heroine loses her abilities.
