He trained as a lawyer and became an actor. He started his career at 25, and at 43 he is not yet married - and he himself is surprised by this. Interview with Gerard Butler, for whom there is no concept of "late" and who sees happiness only in the present.

His assistant is a sweet, discreet-looking middle-aged woman. It is she who opens the door to my London hotel room, where our interview is scheduled. The usual star practice is to rent a luxurious suite in a five-star hotel for meetings with journalists, and all conversations take place officially, even somewhat official, with an indispensable agency condition not to ask the star "questions personal nature". This means that asking about wives, lovers or, God forbid, children is not allowed under pain of being expelled from the suite. And it even surprises me that Butler's assistant does not say anything to me in the usual inflexible tone in such cases. I even clarify: what if I ask about something ... so to speak ... well, not very about cinema. She shrugs, "Ask whatever you want, Jerry doesn't hide anything from anyone." Nothing from anyone?! It just doesn’t happen that way: perhaps the main concern of the stars is to hide something from annoying journalists…

But when "Jerry" walks out of the next room, I understand what was behind the assistant's reaction. Gerard Butler does not at all give the impression of a soul wide open. But he gives the impression of a man of exceptional strength. Height not less than 190 cm, clarity of facial features, open look light, transparent gray-green eyes. Antique to become - not without reason it was he who was chosen for the role of King Leonidas in Zack Snyder's 300 Spartans. Decisiveness of movements - of course, he was the conqueror Attila in the television series of the same name. Genuine cordiality to the interlocutor - and who else could play in the most piercing, most touching? Even the impersonal design suite seems to be illuminated when it appears. warm light. Next to Gerard Butler you feel comfortable and protected. And now I will never agree when he is called a "sex symbol". If he is a symbol of anything, it is true masculinity. It's all about her. It's about her.

psychology: The name given to Russian box office your New film- "Man in great demand" - seems to match your image in the movies and in public consciousness. Emphasized masculinity, masculinity - to what extent does this “trademark” correspond to the real you?

Gerard Butler:

Secrets of trademarks are not disclosed! But if you are asking seriously...then the answer will still sound frivolous. The fact is that here in Scotland I am completely a common person, absolutely average Scot. So I myself was amazed that in America, in this very masculinity, supposedly characteristic of me, people see a peculiarity and ... strange, but special attractiveness. Well, her cinema in me and exploits. Moreover, I do not put any negative meaning into the word "exploitation". I do not want to sound like a cynic, but we all enter the life market with our product. And such is the harsh truth of life that the product that I could initially offer was, yes, masculinity, italicized in the general “movie text”. But it happened by itself, without my conscious participation. I'm used to a different feeling. At home in Glasgow, I was just a "male person" to myself.

But is there something behind the concept of "masculinity" for you?

J.B.:

Perhaps the lack of flimsy ambivalence, unambiguity. That is honesty with life, with others. Perhaps it is my Scottish speaking in me - we are confidently standing with both feet on the ground. When we laugh, we really laugh. In grief, we can cry, because we really experience grief. We always look into our eyes. We make a decision once. We have no hindsight. Stones in the bosom - too. It turns out that this is such masculinity, which can be characteristic of women. Even more: masculinity is especially characteristic of women. And in this sense, I am a convinced feminist.

In what sense exactly?

J.B.:

I don't see any difference between people based on gender. For me, there are no prescribed roles for women and men in society. Moreover, in modern world gender is increasingly becoming a subject free choice. What I don’t believe in at all is this: a man is a hunter and protector, a woman is weak and must certainly be endowed with a maternal instinct.

"I DON'T WANT TO LOOK CYNIC, BUT WE ALL ENTER THE MARKET OF LIFE WITH OUR PRODUCT"

So you're not a defender?

J.B.:

I am definitely a protector. But not because I'm a man. I am a defender simply because I am stronger than many.

But you are not shy about your weaknesses - you recently went to a drug treatment clinic and then talked about it in detail.

J.B.:

I am convinced that not being ashamed of your weaknesses, not hiding problems is a sign of strength. It is what it is. And there's nothing to hide. I really became addicted to painkillers after two injuries: one old, received on the set of "300 Spartans", the second - a new one, hit the rocks during the filming of "Wave Breakers", I'm a surfer there. Well, the old Scottish fondness for old Scotch whiskey is no joke either. But if you decided to fight a painful addiction, then you told yourself that you were addicted. And sometimes confessing something publicly is the only way to get yourself to admit it.

You said you could cry. And I somehow badly represent you in tears.

J.B.:

And in vain. Sometimes it seems to me that I consist of extremes: either I have a reinforced concrete frame and I show unique perseverance or mutton stubbornness, or I melt like a chocolate bar, especially under a woman’s gaze ...

Starring

In the near future, two films with Gerard Butler will be released on our screens.

Gerard Butler in the movie "Wave Breakers", 2012

Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel in 'The Hot Man'

Your parents divorced, you grew up in the so-called incomplete family, with Mother...

J.B.:

Yes, I was one and a half years old when they broke up. My father, as I found out later, was an amazing, immensely charming, cheerful, generous and completely irresponsible person. I saw him again when I was already 16. I returned from school, and my mother says: father is waiting for you in a restaurant not far from our house. He came to the restaurant and recognized his father only by his sister next to him - she was sitting with him at the table. The only thing I could say then was: “Why were you not with us all these years?” And then I cried for three hours ... In any case, then I felt that in us ... how to say it ... pain is preserved. Unspoken, unmanifested pain, resentment can sit in us for years. And it's good if they splash out sometime in tears. Bitterness is worse. It was then that I instinctively came to the conclusion that feelings should be given vent. It's healthier and more honest. Yes, my mom is like that too. Real fighter. Sometimes, it happens, I say: come on, mom, to hell with it. But she - no, she doesn’t let anyone down and is not afraid of a direct skirmish. This, of course, is a character, but also a completely conscious position too - honesty in relations with the world.

Does her opinion mean a lot to you?

J.B.:

And it always has and always will. Anyway, when I was kicked out of a high-profile law firm in disgrace, she was the only person to whom I didn't know how to say it. And not because he was afraid of her condemnation. The fact is that it was a failure of the positive program, as they say in psychological brochures. I was an honors student in school, received a scholarship to the law faculty of the University of Glasgow. And at the same time, our family is actually from the working class, and my admission to law school became something like “Wow, one of ours at the university!”. That is, I always wanted to become an actor, even played in the Scottish youth theater teenager. But as a matter of life ... The Scottish actor was then alone in the whole world - Sean Connery ... In a word, I decided to achieve the real. He practically shone at the university, even became president of the faculty law society. And after university, I was hired as an intern at a serious Edinburgh law firm with an established reputation, centuries-old, I must say. I was supposed to go through a two-year internship, after which I would receive a work license and be accepted into the same firm - these are the rails of a lawyer career. But something in me clicked, twisted and… broke. I was 24, success turned my head, parties began before breakfast, I was arrested a couple of times for “hooliganism” - I loved to fight ... In general, a week before I qualified as a lawyer, I was fired to hell, and quite deservedly so. Of course, I survived the shock - before that I was a permanent winner. Besides, he walked edinburgh festival, and I was in Trainspotting, based on the Irvine Welsh novel, which later became the Danny Boyle film Trainspotting. The guy who played leading role, was just a phenomenon. He moved so freely, fell into hysterics so easily, portrayed glitches so masterfully ... And I sharply, piercingly, painfully felt that I could be there, on stage. But everything is lost, I’m 25, I didn’t become an actor and I won’t anymore, and I was fired even from lawyers ... I know what it is to feel lost, to become unreasonably aggressive ... And at the same time, nothing scared me more than the need to say about your ruined mother! I was afraid of upsetting her and afraid of her disappointment. And when I said it, I realized that it would not be worse, and now I can do everything. Then he told his mother that he nevertheless decided to become an actor, and moved from Edinburgh to London. And the failure actually turned out to be a success. Although at first I worked in the kitchens of restaurants, as a waiter, I showed in malls how electric toys work. The top of my occupation at the time was telesalesman at the Sofa Store.

“FEELINGS SHOULD ALWAYS BE GIVE OUT: SO HEALTHY AND HONEST. BITTERNESS WORSE"

But what was your mother's reaction?

J.B.:

I thought for a long time that she was judging me, that I really disappointed her. But two months later I received a letter: "If you are happy, I will be proud of you."

You are 43 - and many are wondering why you are not married and not even seen in any serious relationship ...

J.B.:

I just have a talent - a talent for keeping my secrets. There were relationships that lasted 5 years, 2 years, and no one, not a single tabloid found out about them. But they vying wrote about Jennifer Aniston, they depend much less on age, Hilary Swank and about 50 other actresses with whom I starred, or just acquaintances with whom I spoke at an official reception - that's where I have a passionate romance ... But You know, about three years ago, when a new acquaintance asked me if I was married, and I answered that no, I was not married, the person usually said: well, you are still young. And now I noticed that people react more with surprise, like - why is that? Yes, I myself now react to this fact with surprise.

And yet - do you feel happy?

J.B.:

In my opinion, happiness is if we live now, in this moment, realizing that only our present is real ... I would like to live in a stream of happiness. The happiness of feeling the reality of your existence. I think now I finally stopped living only work. Drove the Harley through the southern states. Learned to surf. I played football with my nephews… But I’m listening to myself now… God, what an idiot I am! I drove, studied, played ... Where am I running?

Three strange places he visited

Los Angeles County Jail, where he ended up "drinking" during a year-long trip to America after graduation and where he was chained with eight of the same hooligans.

Betty Ford Center for Alcoholics and drug addiction , where, Butler admits, “they stimulate the desire to escape from there as soon as possible - everything is so balanced, so aesthetically pleasing, the interiors are admired there, and the landscapes are intoxicating ... And therefore I want to recover as soon as possible and return from this puppet world into the real one.

Poor suburbs of Johannesburg (South Africa), the so-called townships, where Butler starred in the film "Machine Gun Preacher" by Mark Forster, where dwellings are sometimes built from cardboard boxes and where they live, according to the actor, "perhaps the poorest, but undoubtedly the most open people in the world".

Gerard Butler comes across as one of the most famous womanizers in Hollywood. However, the actor himself, who will soon turn 40, is very worried about the fact that he is still alone.

Gerard admits that he has long been ready for family life but still can't find the woman of her dreams. Perhaps the new movie The Naked Truth, in which Butler stars, will help the movie star make that quest more successful. After talking with the actor, MK-Boulevard found out Gerard's priorities for women.

UNCLOSED MATERIALS

Gerard Butler was born on November 13, 1969 in Paisley (Scotland).
One of his first roles was in the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).

World fame came to the actor thanks to the films The Phantom of the Opera (2004), where Butler played the Phantom, and 300 Spartans (2006), where he played the role of King Leonidas.

He also starred in the films Lara Croft - Tomb Raider 2 (2003), P. S. I love you ”(2007),“ Nim Island ”(2008),“ Rock and Roller ”(2008),“ Gamer ”(2009).

— Gerard, your hero Mike in the film "The Naked Truth" is a rather ambiguous type: a boor, a chauvinist, a lover of greasy jokes. Did you think long and hard before accepting this role?

- I didn't think about it at all. I immediately agreed, as soon as I started reading the script. Because almost every phrase made me laugh. Yes, Mike is a scandalous, sassy, unrestrained, sometimes unbearable type. But he's still good and damn charming. Plus, I've never played a character like this before.

Do you have anything in common with him?

- Well, of course there is. Mike often expresses very questionable things. Me too. Probably because I'm from Scotland. In America, the Scots always say something that drives other people into a slight stupor. (Laughs.) And Mike has quite interesting philosophy about intersexual relations and sex.

- Do you share his opinion about the fact that men have only one sex on their minds?

“Honestly, when men hear such statements from women, they must admit that this is partly true and that they often have such thoughts. While I probably shouldn't be answering this question, it can backfire on me because people will think, "What the hell is this idiot saying?" (Laughs) But in fact, every man is a bit chauvinist and sexist. And sometimes we think like Mike does. But not always!

- Men first, as a rule, evaluate a woman with their eyes. What do you pay attention to first of all?

Yes, it is foolish to deny that we first evaluate a woman with her eyes. But here's the thing. In most cases, we do not have the opportunity to talk to a woman in order to understand what kind of person she is. More often than not, you just walk past her on the street, or drive a car, or collide in an elevator. So we just look at a woman, note to ourselves whether she is sexy or not, and move on.

What woman would you call sexy?

- I can see a woman in a very short skirt and wonder: “Why is she doing this? Because it looks terrible!” Another time I might think, "Oh, what beautiful legs." It all depends on how a woman behaves. By and large, sexual attraction lasts no more than three seconds. For me different women may seem sexy. Some because of the way they present themselves. Others attract with their thoughts and actions. Sometimes it turns me on just because she is very gentle with me or just loves me. And sometimes none of this works. And what also attracts me in a woman is that she knows when to shut up at the right time. Maybe it's time for me to shut up after that. (Laughs.)

- So what is the most important quality should a woman possess to get your attention?

She must have a good sense of humor. I also like spontaneous women who can surprise you. And I just love gentle and kind. When girls show me this, I melt.

— Your hero teaches Abby — the heroine of Katherine Heigl — how to seduce a man, tries to reveal her sexuality in her. At the same time, he is a very good listener and therefore gives right advice. Are you good at giving advice?

- I think so. There were several moments in my life when I came for advice, and this taught me how to be a good adviser myself. When someone addresses me, I try to fully understand the essence of the situation, I start asking questions why you did this or said that. Many are surprised at this, they do not expect such compassion, interest and even, I will not be afraid, wisdom from me.

- There is an opinion that men are more vulnerable than women, especially when they are surrounded by other men. Do you agree with this?

- I think men can be more vulnerable because they have much less opportunity to show it and discuss it. It is hard for a man to talk about his weakness with a woman, because he does not want to seem less than perfect to her. But it is difficult for him to show his vulnerability to a man, so as not to be considered a weakling and a nurse. It's not easy to walk up to your buddies and admit that you've been ripped off or that you're afraid of something. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it doesn't happen very often. Women are much more open with their girlfriends. And on men they dump their weaknesses to the fullest. (Laughs.)

Mike also tells Abby that a person needs to explore their own body first before someone else can give you real pleasure. Do you agree with this?

— Absolutely. And I don't see anything wrong with that if a woman learns to understand her sexuality and her body. I also agree that a man needs to constantly learn to understand female body and masculine for a woman.

- The main characters are sexually attracted to each other, however bed scene not in the film. But there is an incendiary latin dance

“I was amazed at how hot it turned out. Although during the shooting of this scene, I can’t say that I felt super sexy. Before filming the picture, I took a few salsa lessons. But when I learn something, I often get nervous. For example, for the film "P. S. I love you” I learned to play the guitar and sing. But when we started filming, I realized that I couldn't do both at the same time. If I play, I can't sing. If I sing, I can't play. And if I play and sing, I can't move. Here I was also afraid that I would not be able to dance salsa, I would not remember all the movements. But everything happened so easily and naturally that the scene turned out just great.

— Your hero says a lot of obscenities. How did you feel when you uttered such phrases in front of women?

“The fact is that this is my usual way of talking. And that was one of the reasons why I got this role. One day at dinner with the producers, I was throwing all these greasy, obscene, sexist jokes. They, having heard this, considered me a worthy candidate for the role of Mike and offered to read the script.

- And the last thing: would you like to know everything about women? Or would it be better to keep a secret?

Good question. We are all trying to find out as much as possible about each other. But on big deal, just agree or disagree with certain things. I will never study women thoroughly, and they will never fully understand me. And in this film, the very opportunity to look at each other with different parties barricades: a feminine vision of the thoughts of men and a masculine vision of the madness of women.

BY THE WAY

The comedy "The Naked Truth" tells about the war of the sexes.

Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a successful television producer with strict moral principles who dreams of meeting perfect man. Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler) is the host of the TV show The Naked Truth with a chauvinistic outlook on life, who loves dirty jokes and is convinced that women exist only for sex. They can't stand each other. But when a potential lover appears on the horizon, Abby is forced to turn to Mike for advice.

Gerard Butler, 39, talks to Katie Mala about falling in love, being homesick, and the ugly truth about men.
Gerard Butler is in that pleasant stage of fame where he balances, apparently happily, between superstar status and obscure rumors about him. Lavishly showered with starring roles over the past 5 years (Phantom of the Opera, 300, RocknRolla), the former Scottish lawyer - still a Scot, albeit with an American accent, has the opportunity to simply walk the streets of Los Angeles with his little pug, Lolita, ("little doggy for big man”), already famous enough to be stopped by the paparazzi, the actor's pals, and a nutcase who offers him a candle of prosperity and a prediction that he will produce his next picture. "I produced my last one," he informs her sweetly.
Butler's life is not complete without dark side. According to press reports, he is awaiting a court date for an incident in which he allegedly attacked a photographer. By law, he cannot comment widely on this. He says that some paparazzi are "terrible" - those "who try to make you miserable in order to make money", and that's exactly the kind of thing he has a problem with.
At 39, Butler considers his relatively recent success difficult to define (measurable). "Who do you think I am?" he laughs. But his shares will rise after the release " The naked truth”, a romantic comedy in which he starred in tandem with Katherine Heigl. The plot is based on how differently men and women view relationships, he says.
Question: Do you think women have any idea about the ugly truth about men?
Butler: If women could hear what men are talking about when they are not around, it would all be over. You would all become gay or take a vow of celibacy. There is that sensual, superficial, carnal aspect that makes up the worst side of men. And this part is like, “Don't talk too much on a date, laugh at what I say and don't expect anything to come of it. But then they, too, can fall head over heels in love.
Question: And you?
Butler: Love is something I have definitely experienced a couple of times. Nothing came of it, it made me crazy, but I absolutely want to experience it again. It's all about this fucking time. A couple of years ago, people said, "You're young, you're single, you couldn't be in a better position." Two years later, they say, "Oh, you're that old already." What's happened? Did I spill acid on my face?
Question: But you have a reputation for being the new Hollywood womanizer.
Butler: I really had a lot of fun. Now I'm more serious about things, I don't play the fool anymore, as I did before. It was much more fun when
I was not under surveillance (could get away from the radar). Now going on a date means it will get a lot of press coverage. I would be lying if I said that my personal life at the moment is great. Actually, she's pretty pathetic.
Question: Undoubtedly fame has increased your demand. If in real life everything goes to six points, then with popularity it is at least eight.
Butler(laughs): I think it's always been 8 and a half. In general, I think what helped me in the profession (game) was the lack of confidence in my appearance and attractiveness while I was growing up. I think it got me into trouble, but it also taught me how to be an idiot, to be funny. Good-looking guys were cool, but I definitely never felt like that.
Question: Perhaps this has changed now?
Butler: There is nothing better than that when people appreciate you highly, but this is not the most. Fans are fantastic, they give value to your career, but that doesn't mean you want to marry them. They put you on a pedestal and it's very hard to date someone like that.
Question: And then there are the glory hunters.
Butler: Such people do not fit into my ideal girl at all.
Question: Before you went into acting, you were fired the day before you qualified as a lawyer because of your spree. Wild times behind?
Butler: Drinking was a huge problem for me. At that time, it seemed that all dreams were destroyed, and drinking served as a support (support). I was a crazy drunk - jumping off buildings, hanging off bridges. But they helped me - I do not drink for 12 years. I cleaned up, except for coffee and Coca-Cola.
Question: do you miss scotland?
Butler: More and more. Not being with your family leaves a feeling of emptiness, you are not as confident on your feet as you would like. It's good (calmly) to be at home.
Question: Are you still looking for something?
Butler: I always look ahead. But I have a secret inner confidence that everything will be very good.

Despite the fact that the actor was born in Scotland when he was six months old, Gerard Butler's family moved to Montreal. The boy's parents wanted to organize their own business there, but soon divorced. Little Gerard stayed with his mother, and they soon returned to their homeland.

Since their family lived not far from the local theater, the grown-up Butler regularly dropped in there and even participated in some productions. At school, he was also a diligent student and did well in various subjects. Despite this, the mother was not enthusiastic about her son's hobbies. When it came time to choose a further place of study, Gerard agreed to study law so as not to upset his family.

As in school, at the university Butler was one of the best students and even became the head of the student society of lawyers.

First failures

Despite the successful completion of the university, he still decided to go to Los Angeles to try to become an actor. Unfortunately, Gerard's dreams did not come true. After spending a year and a half of his life on numerous screen tests, he achieved only one role, in the film "The Bodyguard".

A string of career failures continued with terrible news for the young man: his father was diagnosed with cancer. By that time, our hero had not seen own father. After the funeral, the failed actor went to Scotland.

Although a legal career and a nine-to-five job did not bring him much pleasure, he got a job in big firm and found an ally - Alan Stewart. Together they went through a lot, and Alan tried to save Butler from discouragement after work. They started a rock band called "Speed", but that didn't really make Gerard happy.

The first steps to an acting career

The man finally realized that he was created for acting career when I saw with my own eyes the play "Trainspotting". He saw the production in Edinburgh, and a few days later he arrived in London to try his luck again becoming a professional actor. Before he was noticed, he had a chance to try many ways to earn a living: a waiter, a salesman, an ordinary assistant in the theater. However, after some time, not without his courage and even some impudence, Butler was noticed and invited to audition. Of course, many of these paintings were not very successful, but he was already noticed and remembered. An important milestone for the actor there were shootings in the 2006 film "300 Spartans", where he played not last role. This was followed by several more serious works, thanks to which Gerard Butler gained popularity.

Stormy romances

Gerard's personal life is surrounded by mysteries and, of course, the paparazzi often caught him with new passions. There were rumors that he dated Rosario Dawson in 2007. Gerard Butler and his girlfriend appeared together at social events, but it is not certain that they were in a relationship.

After Dawson, the personal life of this talented man was connected with Shanna Moakler. This happened in 2008, but Gerard Butler did not confirm these rumors in an interview about his personal life.
