Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky was born into the family of an official Dmitry Grigorievich Ushinsky on March 2 (according to the new style), 1824 in the city of Tula. Childhood and high school years were spent in a small father's estate on the outskirts of the city of Novgorod - Seversk, Chernigov province. His mother, Lyubov Stepanovna Ushinskaya (née Kapnist), gave her son an excellent upbringing and herself prepared Seversk Gymnasium for admission to Novgorod. Konstantin studied unevenly, but early discovered the ability and inclination for literature and history. His writings in literature were the best in the class, but in mathematics he did not stand out for success. The artistic warehouse of the personality of the future teacher was also manifested in the fact that Ushinsky young years began to write poetry and retained a poetic passion until the end of his days. Interest in the book, in reading, instilled in him by his mother, grew over time into a penchant for literary creativity.

After graduating from the Novgorod-Seversk gymnasium, K.D. Ushinsky entered the law faculty of Moscow University, and not the philological faculty, where his romantic and poetic nature could incline him.

University time (1840-1844) became for Ushinsky the beginning of a serious reflection on life. In addition to attending lectures and working on the primary sources provided for by the program, he studied in depth philosophical writings Hegel and other thinkers. Conversations with professors T.N. Granovsky and P.G. Redkin also encouraged him to do this.

In May 1844, Ushinsky graduated from Moscow University as the second candidate of law and was left at the department of the encyclopedia of jurisprudence to prepare for the exams for the title of master, giving the right to teach at the university.

In the summer of 1846, KD Ushinsky, as one of the best graduates of Moscow University, was appointed to the post of professor at the Demidov Lyceum in Yaroslavl.

The Yaroslavl Lyceum - a privileged educational institution for the training of senior government officials - was founded in 1803 by a miner P.G. Demidov. He was equated with law faculties. In the 40s years XIX V. in his syllabus new branches of knowledge on finance, economy, management and state law entered under the general name of cameral sciences or cameralistics. They outlined wide circle information and on history, geography, political economy, philosophy, etc.

Ushinsky's lectures on cameralistics, as well as his speech "On cameral education", delivered at a solemn meeting of teachers and students of the Yaroslavl Demidov Lyceum on September 18, 1848, were distinguished by their particular liberality. “The arguments of a young professor about the rule of law, about science in general and cameralistics in particular, about the spiritual and economic life societies and states were perceived either enthusiastically or warily. Not everyone understood Ushinsky's thoughts that cameral education is ultimately called upon to improve people, to awaken the creative forces of the people. And the adherents of antiquity seemed completely doubtful to his bold conclusion that there was no longer any need to "dig into the ancient ashes to find a phoenix there", and that general education should change its direction and correspond to the "spirit of the times" - the new state of science, the industrial development of the century.

KD Ushinsky turned out to be a worthy student of T.N. Granovsky - and paid for it with his career as a professor. The reason for his dismissal from the lyceum was his unwillingness to comply with the order of the Ministry of Public Education on the submission by teachers for viewing of detailed notes of their lectures. In early September 1849, the young scientist was forced to leave the Lyceum.

Since the autumn of this year, the St. Petersburg period of the life of KD Ushinsky began. For almost half a year he remained out of official service. And only in February 1850 was "according to his desire transferred to the Department of Religious Affairs of Foreign Confessions as an assistant clerk." His service as an official of the Ministry of the Interior for four and a half years gave a fairly tolerable material support, but the spiritual life remained outside the Department.

Perhaps the bureaucratic service interspersed with journalistic and translation work would have continued, but in July 1854 the department in which Ushinsky served was abolished, and he himself found himself out of state.

Three months without service, without a permanent salary, the wife is waiting for the birth of her second child. Casual earnings of either a writer, or a journalist, or a translator could not provide a tolerable life for the family. Only at the beginning of November 1854, by a lucky chance, KD Ushinsky received a position as a senior teacher of literature at the Gatchina Orphan's Institute. It was a closed secondary educational institution with about 1000 pupils and more than 70 teachers. Among them are remarkable Russian teachers, whose names are included in the annals of Russian pedagogical thought: A.G. Obodovsky, E.O. Gugel, P.S. Guriev.

The teacher's and then the inspector's work opened his eyes to a new reality for him, much more complex than the one he had to deal with in the Yaroslavl Demidov Lyceum. He found himself at the base of that pedagogical pyramid, at the top of which he had already visited and about which he said that it is enough for a university teacher to know his subject well and present it clearly. Below, at the base of the pyramid, this is completely insufficient, despite the apparent simplicity, the elementary nature of the relationship "adult-child" and the cognitive narrowness of children. Child's world, its originality and beauty were revealed to Ushinsky, a poet and artist at heart. He rushed into the depths of this world, trying to unravel the mysteries of the formation of human consciousness and behavior, to penetrate into the origins of human life. This was encouraged not only by the state educational institution, but also native family. By the beginning of September 1856, he had three children: a son, Pavel, and two daughters, Vera and Nadezhda. And it is no coincidence that the first educational book by KD Ushinsky was called "Children's World" and was conceived while working in Gatchina, when another child was expected in the family. And when the book saw the light, two more sons were added to the family: Konstantin and Vladimir.

Here, in Gatchina, it was conceived and " native word". True, this educational set (the ABC and a book for reading) saw the light of day only at the end of 1864. A very difficult period of the teacher's life and work lay between the idea and its implementation. It was in Gatchina that Ushinsky became a teacher. Prior to that, he was a teacher (professor), official, writer, journalist, translator. And in the "children's town" Ushinsky found his true calling. From here began his ascent to the pedagogical Olympus. Here came to him the glory of a Russian teacher and children's writer, whose stories were included in the "Children's World and Reader", which became a model of an educational book for reading in primary school, and his little stories came out of the cramped covers of the textbook and found a long independent life as individual publications up to our time (“Petushok”, “Russian fairy tales told by K. Ushinsky”, “Bishka”, “Stories”, etc.). In the preface to the first edition of Detsky Mir, Ushinsky explained the purpose of his book for initial classroom reading. It should be “the threshold of serious science; so that the student, having read it with the teacher, acquires a love for the serious pursuit of science.

The spirit of that time, the trends of changes in women's education in the West and the revealed ailments of the Russian elite education (the Corps of Pages, the Smolny Institute, etc.) prompted the Mariinsky department to make improvements in the educational department, to begin reforms, primarily in the most privileged institutions. Reformers were needed. Usually they were ordered from abroad. For the Smolny Institute, however, an exception was made. The reformer was found in his department. It turned out to be the class inspector of the Gatchina Orphan's Institute, K.D. Ushinsky, whose project for a teacher's seminary was shelved "until better times" in the Educational Committee of the Office of Empress Maria.

Pedagogical activity Ushinsky at the Smolny Institute, which lasted more than three years (January 1859 - March 1862), was the most intense and dramatic. It began with Ushinsky drawing up a project of educational transformations for the noble and petty-bourgeois departments. While this project was being considered by the council of the institute and approved by the highest, Ushinsky at the beginning of April 1859 submitted a petition to the Ministry of Public Education for permission to publish the critical-philosophical, pedagogical and psychological journal Ubezhdenie.

At the end of February 1860, the Office of Empress Maria approved Ushinsky's project on the transformation of the classes of the Smolny Institute. Almost simultaneously, the memorandum of the Minister of Public Education E.P. Kovalevsky was approved on the instruction of K.D. Ushinsky to edit the Journal of the Ministry of Public Education (ZhMNPr), and on March 9, 1860, K.D. appointed editor of ZhMNPr. In parallel with this huge versatile literary and pedagogical work, Ushinsky was completing preparations for the publication of the educational book "Children's World and Reader". This should also include the practical verification of this textbook in lower grades Smolny Institute, as well as participation in the "Thursdays" held in the wing of the Smolny, where the inspector's apartment was located. Colleagues usually gathered on "Thursdays" and talked on a wide variety of topics - from new literary and pedagogical publications to intra-institutional educational affairs. Back in 1861, after leaving ZhMNPr, Ushinsky was going to go abroad for treatment. But urgent business and literary affairs forced him to postpone the trip. However, in the spring of 1862, he was forced to apply for dismissal from the Smolny Institute "due to poor health." In the Council of the Institute and in the Office there were influential dignitaries who were sympathetic to Ushinsky. They transferred him to the Educational Committee of the Office of Empress Maria and sent him on a business trip abroad to study the production women's education in countries Western Europe. Thus, Ushinsky's salary was preserved, which, together with additional payments from the Mariinsky department for business trips, allowed the family to live quite comfortably. By the time of his departure abroad in the spring of 1862, Ushinsky had five children; upon his return to Russia (1.XI.1867), a daughter, Olga, was born.

Ushinsky's thoughts about the folk school of the period of his stay abroad gave off a significant "foreign" flavor. Only after returning to Russia did he clarify his ideas about the Russian folk school - not without the help of the zemstvo teacher N.A. Korf, although both extracted initial ideas from the school and pedagogical heritage of Pestalozzi. However, Korf proceeded from the demands of practice, and Ushinsky from the truths of science. Both agreed, in the end, that "the Zemstvo school must finally lay a solid foundation for public education in Russia ...". “Realizing that the new zemstvo school could become truly popular, Ushinsky planned his near future more precisely, although the incompleteness of Pedagogical Anthropology (he was working on the third volume) and precarious health forced him to be prudent even in confidential letters to N.A. Korf : "Write a book for folk school has been my favorite dream for a long time, but it seems that it is destined to remain a dream. A little higher, Ushinsky wrote: "If my health pulls, then, as soon as I finish the third volume of Anthropology, I will deal exclusively with public education." Korf found practical use Ushinsky's "native word" in the schools of the Aleksandrovsky district, about which he informed him, and previously published in his "Reports" the results of these applications. Ushinsky noted that "many more applications have been made" than he himself could count on. Therefore, he intended to remake the "Native Word", orienting it to the rural (zemstvo) school.

The plans were not destined to come true. "Crumpled and crumpled", according to Ushinsky himself, he was preparing to move away from the pedagogical field.

His main attention was focused on the creation of a Russian folk school, as well as on issues of women's education (for several years he served as an inspector at the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens). In the field of public education, Ushinsky focused on the traditional values ​​of the life of the people. In the advent of the era of capitalism and industrialization, he saw "dirt" and "debauchery." And he argued that only the church and the school can lead "our simple people ... into a larger and freer sphere."

Ushinsky theoretically comprehended his pedagogical practice in a large two-volume work “Man as an Object of Education. Experience of Pedagogical Anthropology” (1868-1869). Many of the conclusions of this work are not outdated today. Also, certain provisions of his article "Native Word" (1861) are not outdated. In the preface to the book "Children's World and Reader" (1861) Ushinsky wrote that the appearance of this work was caused by "modern need". The material was divided into sections: "From nature", "From geography", "From Russian history", "The first lessons of logic". The reader also included works by foreign authors.

The second educational book created by Ushinsky was "native word" for younger children. She, like the first, had big success. Just like "Children's World ...", "Native Word" the word is composed on the basis of folklore, to which Konstantin Dmitrievich assigned an extremely important educational role, and on the best literary samples. Ushinsky also strives here to give children a system of real knowledge, to preserve the encyclopedic breadth.


Products for children. Ushinsky not only possessed a pedagogical talent, but also proved to be a wonderful children's writer. His works, placed in educational books, contain a clear moral lesson and carry concrete knowledge to readers. For example, "Children's World ..." opens with an entertaining story "Children in the Grove", which talks about the perniciousness of laziness and irresponsibility. The brother and sister went to school, but, attracted by the coolness of the grove, they rushed to it, and not to the school. The stories "Winter", "Spring", "Summer" and "Autumn" give an idea of ​​the change of seasons. Simple concepts, clear language, calm intonation - everything is conducive little reader to the perception of the information contained in these stories.

Ushinsky never misses the opportunity to turn from specific descriptions to higher matters, to conclusions aimed at spiritual development. The story "About a Man" begins with the words: "I am a man, although still small, because I have the same soul and the same body as other people." Next comes detailed description human body, and at the end - a reminder: "Man is gifted with a beautifully arranged body, gifted with life, gifted with a soul - free, intelligent and immortal, desiring good and believing in the Creator of the Universe." In "Children's World ..." in the section "From Russian History" Ushinsky's stories about important historical events are printed. Ushinsky created his stories from history, relying on Karamzin and Ishimova's transcription of his "History of the Russian State".

The special value of his stories about nature, about animals (“Complaints of a hare”, “Bees on reconnaissance”, etc.) lies in the fact that nature is shown in them as an integral and beautiful world full of secrets.

Ushinsky's works about children (for example, "Four Desires", "Close Together, But Boring Apart", "Cowardly Vanya") are distinguished by subtle psychology and teach children life lessons using simple examples. The author tactfully suggests what you need to get rid of in yourself, what shortcomings in character can interfere in the future. Here Vanya, left at home alone, was frightened of the dough in the kneader: it puffs on the stove and suggests a brownie. Ushinsky edited folk tales for children. He preferred them even to a well-written literary work. He highly appreciated poetic world folk art, considered a fairy tale the best means for "understanding folk life".

In the fairy tale "The Man and the Bear", processed by Ushinsky, the cunning man persuaded the bear that it was better for him to take tops from turnips, and roots from wheat; “Since then, the bear and the peasant have had friendship apart.” In another tale - “The Fox and the Goat” - the Fox, having fallen into the well, assures the Goat that she is just resting here: “It’s hot up there, so I climbed here. Books by K.D. Ushinsky "Children's World and Reader" and "Native Word" had a very great influence both on the later study guides as well as literature for children in general. The pedagogical principles of Ushinsky were used by Leo Tolstoy in compiling the famous ABCs.

Around our farm, along the ravines and wet places, there were many snakes.

I'm not talking about snakes: we are so used to a harmless snake that they don't even call him a snake. He has small sharp teeth in his mouth, he catches mice and even birds, and, perhaps, can bite through the skin; but there is no poison in these teeth, and the bite of the snake is completely harmless.

We had a lot of snakes; especially in heaps of straw that lay near the threshing floor: as soon as the sun warms, so they will crawl out of there; they hiss when you approach, they show their tongue or sting, but snakes do not bite with a sting. Even in the kitchen under the floor there were snakes, and as children used to sit on the floor and sip milk, they crawl out and pull their heads to the cup, and the children with a spoon on his forehead.

But we also had more than one snake: there was also a poisonous snake, black, large, without those yellow stripes that are visible near the snake's head. We call such a snake a viper. The viper often bit the cattle, and if they did not have time, it happened, to call the old grandfather Ohrim from the village, who knew some kind of medicine against the bite of poisonous snakes, then the cattle would certainly fall - they would blow it up, poor, like a mountain.

One of our boys died of a viper. She bit him near the very shoulder, and before Ohrim came, the tumor passed from the arm to the neck and chest: the child began to rave, thrash about, and died two days later. As a child, I heard a lot about vipers and was terribly afraid of them, as if I felt that I would have to meet a dangerous reptile.

They mowed behind our garden, in a dry ravine, where a stream runs every year in spring, and in summer it is only damp and tall, dense grass grows. Any mowing was a holiday for me, especially when they rake the hay into piles. Here, it used to be, and you will begin to run around the hayfield and throw yourself at the shocks with all your might and wallow in the fragrant hay until the women drive away so as not to break the shocks.

That's how this time I ran and tumbled: there were no women, the mowers went far, and only our black big dog Brovko lay on a shock and gnawed at a bone.

I tumbled into one mop, turned around in it a couple of times, and suddenly jumped up in horror. Something cold and slippery swept my arm. The thought of a viper flashed through my mind - and what? A huge viper, which I disturbed, crawled out of the hay and, rising on its tail, was ready to rush at me.

Instead of running, I stand as if petrified, as if the reptile has mesmerized me with its ageless, unblinking eyes. Another minute - and I was dead; but Brovko, like an arrow, flew off the shock, rushed at the snake, and a mortal struggle ensued between them.

The dog tore the snake with its teeth, trampled it with its paws; the snake bit the dog in the muzzle, and in the chest, and in the stomach. But a minute later only shreds of the viper lay on the ground, and Brovko rushed to run and disappeared.

But the strangest thing of all is that from that day on Brovko disappeared and wandered no one knows where.

Only two weeks later he returned home: thin, skinny, but healthy. My father told me that dogs know the herb they use to treat viper bites.

Children in the grove

Two children, brother and sister, went to school. They must have been passing by a beautiful shady grove. It was hot and dusty on the road, but cool and cheerful in the grove.

Usedom was very rich and lived luxuriously: perhaps the very nickname of Usedom, or Vsedom, he received from the fact that in his house there was absolutely everything that could be found good and expensive at that time; and the owner himself, his mistress and children ate only on gold and silver, walked only in sables and brocade.

There were many excellent horses in Usedom's stable; but neither in Usedom's stable, nor in all of Vineta was there a horse faster and more beautiful than Catch-Wind - that's how Usedom called his favorite riding horse for the speed of her legs. No one dared to ride Catch the Wind, except the owner himself, and the owner never rode any other horse.

It happened to a merchant on one of his trips to commercial affairs, returning to Vineta, ride on your favorite horse through a large and dark forest. Dismounting from the horse, whose flanks were rising high from fatigue, the merchant immediately, rattling Catch-Wind on his lathered neck, solemnly promised: no matter what happened to him, he would never sell or give his faithful horse as a gift to anyone, not drive him away, no matter how he did not grow old, and every day, until his death, let the horse go three measures of the best oats.

But, hurrying to his wife and children, Usedom did not look after the horse himself, and the lazy worker did not lead the exhausted horse properly, did not let him cool down completely and gave him water ahead of time.

Since then, Catch-the-Wind began to fall ill, to frail, weakened on his feet and, finally, went blind. The merchant was very sad and for half a year faithfully kept his promise: the blind horse was still standing in the stable, and he was given three measures of oats every day.

Sedentary then bought himself another riding horse, and six months later it seemed to him too imprudent to give a blind, worthless horse three measures of oats, and he ordered to release two. Another six months passed; the blind horse was still young, he had to be fed for a long time, and they began to let him go one measure at a time.

Finally, and this seemed to the merchant hard, he ordered that the bridle be removed from Catch-Wind and driven out of the gate, so that he would not take up space in the stable in vain. The workers escorted the blind horse out of the yard with a stick, as it resisted and did not go.

Poor blind Catch-Wind, not understanding what was being done to him, not knowing and not seeing where to go, remained standing outside the gate, head down and mournfully moving his ears. Night fell, it began to snow, and sleeping on the rocks was hard and cold for the poor blind horse. She stood in one place for several hours, but at last hunger forced her to look for food. Raising her head, sniffing in the air to see if there might be even a tuft of straw from the old, haggard roof, the blind horse wandered at random and constantly bumped into the corner of the house, then the fence.

In the middle of Vineta, on the square where the veche met, a large veche bell hung on four pillars, by the ringing of which the people gathered and which anyone who considered himself offended and demanded court and protection from the people could call. No one, of course, dared to ring the veche bell for nothing, knowing that for this the people would get a lot.

Wandering around the square, a blind, deaf and hungry horse accidentally came across the poles on which the bell hung, and, thinking, perhaps, to pull a bundle of straw from the eaves, grabbed the rope tied to the tongue of the bell with its teeth and began to pull: the bell rang like this it is strong that the people, despite the fact that it was still early, began to flock to the square in droves, wanting to know who so loudly demands his trial and protection. Everyone in Vineta knew Catch the Wind, knew that he had saved his master's life, knew the master's promise - and were surprised to see a poor horse in the middle of the square - blind, hungry, trembling from the cold, covered with snow.

It was soon explained what was the matter, and when the people found out that the rich Usedom had driven out of the house the blind horse that had saved his life, they unanimously decided that Catch the Wind had every right to ring the veche bell.

Once upon a time there lived a brother and a sister, a cockerel and a hen. The cockerel ran into the garden and began to peck at the green currant, and the hen said to him: "Don't eat, Petya!     The formation of coherent speech is one of the most difficult tasks facing teachers and their pupils at senior preschool age. native nature is a powerful source from which children draw knowledge and impressions. A wonderful teacher and writer, he lived almost a hundred years ago, his stories are surprisingly vivid and close to children, they reveal small and big secrets of the vast world that they are just beginning to learn.     All these and many other fairy tales, stories and jokes, just as well known to everyone, were composed by Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky, others were retold.

    Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky was born more than one hundred and fifty years ago, in 1824.

    He spent his childhood in Ukraine, in the small town of Novgorod-Seversk and studied at the local gymnasium.

    The gymnasium, Ushinsky recalled, was housed in an old, dilapidated building that looked more like a barn than a school: “The windows in the old frames trembled, rotten floors, filled with ink and trampled with heel nails, creaked and jumped; split doors pretended to be bad, long old benches , which have completely lost their original coloring, have been cut and written over by many generations of high school students. There was nothing but something on these benches!     But the director of the gymnasium I.F. Timkovsky is a writer and historian, kind and educated person, managed to instill in high school students respect for knowledge, for science, and those high school students who studied well enjoyed great respect among their comrades.

    After high school, Ushinsky studied at Moscow University. After graduating from university, he became a teacher himself.

    At first he worked in Yaroslavl, then he was appointed to teach Russian literature - as the lessons of Russian language and literature were then called in schools - at the Gatchina Orphan's Institute, where orphans lived and studied.

    When Ushinsky began teaching at the Gatchina Institute, he found that his students and students knew very little about all subjects.

    He saw the same thing at the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens, where he was later transferred and where the daughters of the nobles were brought up. The girls were sure that buns grow on trees, and when one day they were asked to write an essay "Sunrise", they could not even explain why the sun rises and sets.

    But the worst thing was that they considered learning a martyr's torment and punishment.

    And so it is in all schools.

    Ushinsky loved children very much and sympathized with them very much: it was really difficult for them to study. The textbooks they studied with were boring and incomprehensible, and the guys had to memorize them in order not to get a bad mark.

    And so Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky decided to write such a textbook, according to which it would be easy and interesting for children to study. And when learning is not torment, then the student both studies and learns more successfully.

    And Ushinsky compiled two such textbooks for elementary school. They were called "Native Word" and "Children's World".

    "Native Word" and "Children's World" were not at all like the old boring textbooks. They were clear and very interesting. You’ll start reading them and you won’t tear yourself away: you want to know more about what is written on the next page.

    Ushinsky placed fairy tales in his books - he heard some of them in childhood and now retold them, and some he invented himself.

    He composed stories about what is close to children, what surrounds them in Everyday life: about animals and birds, about natural phenomena, about the children themselves - about their activities and games.

    He told the children that the bread they eat, the clothes they wear, the house they live in, are all the work of people, and therefore the most necessary, most respected person in society is a worker: a peasant, an artisan, a worker. .

    Together with his friend, a young teacher Modzalevsky, Konstantin Dmitrievich composed poems and songs that were so easy to remember. They are also included in his books.

    Among those songs was this one:

    Ushinsky's books revealed to children big and small secrets of the vast world in which they were just beginning to live and in which there was so much unfamiliar, incomprehensible and mysterious.

    And most importantly, they revealed the biggest secret: what is the joy and happiness of a person. From the stories and fairy tales of Ushinsky, it was clear to everyone that only a kind, honest and hardworking person can be happy.

    For the first time, Ushinsky's books "Native Word" and "Children's World" were published more than a hundred years ago. Many generations learned from them: not only our grandparents, great-grandparents, but also great-great-grandmothers and great-great-grandfathers.

    And today's schoolchildren read and love the stories and fairy tales of Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky.

    And we can say with confidence that these stories and fairy tales will be read and loved by many, many more new generations, because people will always respect work, knowledge, honesty and kindness.
