What paints, brushes, finishes to choose for paintings by numbers?

About paint

Acrylic paints are an excellent option for creating such artistic masterpieces. The intermediate layer will dry in just a couple of minutes. Once you have used the paint, seal it well enough and it will keep for several months. If you are putting off starting creative process, you bought paint in a can, but didn’t open it, don’t worry, it can be stored in this form for several years. But keep in mind that acrylic paint, if it has dried, cannot be diluted with anything.

Therefore, after opening the container, it must be closed very well. If there is a dried layer on the lid of the jar or on its edges, remove it, and only then tightly seal the container so that the seal is not broken.

As mentioned above, it is better to first cover the fragments of the picture with paint of the same tone. This is due not only to the convenience of painting, but also to the fact that then you will not have to open a jar of paint of a certain color several times, which will significantly extend the shelf life.

About brushes

It is important to choose the right brush. If you need to paint a large area, then use a flat one. If you need to draw individual details, then use round brushes. So that there are colors the desired shade, rinse the brush well in water after using a certain color, then blot it with a napkin. If this is not done, water may get into the already applied paint and change its tone.

It is necessary to wash the brush every 5-7 minutes if you paint with one color for more than this time.

For those who like to drink a cup of tea or coffee during a break from creating their masterpiece, the following recommendation: before you go to relax this way, rinse your brush, otherwise the paint will dry out and the painting tool may become unusable. At the end of the work, this also needs to be done, wipe off excess water, dry the brushes well, then they will last you a long time.

How to draw color by number paintings

For beginners, it is better to use cardboard, it is cheaper than canvas. It has less grain, making it easier for beginners to create their first masterpieces. It is a cheaper material than canvas. To make a picture on cardboard look complete, it needs to be framed. To do this, you can take a photo frame, which is relatively inexpensive.

A canvas requires a more expensive frame and the canvas itself costs more than cardboard, but if it is already stretched on a stretcher, then it is not in danger of deformation due to moisture, like a painting with a base on cardboard, if it is not framed. When you become more experienced in this handicraft, you will be able to draw on canvas and feel like real artists.

You can choose a frame for your work based on the following tips:

  1. The frame should fit first of all to the picture itself, and secondly to the interior.
  2. For small artistic masterpieces, choose thin frames. If the canvas is medium or large in size, then wider and more voluminous frames will be very appropriate here.
  3. If you hang your work not close to the wall, leave a gap of 0.5–1 cm, then the painting with a stretcher, made on canvas, will look more voluminous.

The following recommendations will help the painting remain in great shape for a long time.
  1. If you want your finished work shined for as long as possible bright colors, protect it from exposure to ultraviolet radiation. To do this, coat with matte acrylic varnish.
  2. If you want your painting by numbers to shine, then use a glossy varnish. But in this case, you will need to hang it correctly, since too bright lighting and a switched-on light bulb can glare on the canvas when viewing the image.
  3. To ensure that your masterpiece retains its original appearance for a long time, do not store it in a humid place or where there are temperature changes. Otherwise, the canvas tension will weaken and the stretcher may become deformed.
  4. If you bought a set for paintings by numbers, then cover your art with its packaging to protect it from mechanical influences, light, and dust.

“Anyone can become an artist!” - today this motto is more relevant than ever. Yes, don’t be surprised, nowadays anyone can feel like the inventive Leonardo da Vinci or the expressive Van Gogh. What is the reason for this phenomenon? In paintings by numbers, which are gaining more and more popularity in the 21st century. After all, they allow you to reveal creativity to everyone who craves it, even without sufficient experience or free time.

We draw according to the “all inclusive” principle

What’s especially nice is that any set for home painting already includes everything you need: numbered jars of paints, one or more brushes, instructions, a check sheet for checking shades, divided into sectors and marked with numbers on cardboard or canvas with a stretcher, varnish mixture and wall fastenings for the finished painting. You can start creating right away! But first you have to choose desired basis paintings and learn coloring life hacks.

Cardboard vs canvas

Experienced paint-by-numbers believe that it is worth starting with cardboard. After all, this material is very cheap, but at the same time it is able to absorb excess paint applied to it, which is important for beginning artists. But cardboard does not give the paintings the texture and “realness” that canvas gives: slightly rough to the touch, already primed and stretched on a real stretcher. The canvas, in turn, is available with a monochrome numbered outline or a colored one. The latter type of canvas is suitable even for elderly and visually impaired people, as well as children, because... coloring becomes intuitive. It’s better to start with small formats and clear subjects: animals, fish, birds, landscapes, nature or flowers. But to drawing people, angels, icons or complex architectural structures It’s worth switching over after mastering the basic techniques of number painting.

With or without rules?

Certainly, contemporary art no longer has clear instructions on “dos” and “don’ts”, and the rules modern art exist solely to violate them. But for this you need to know them at least a little, and therefore, before you start unpacking the treasured box with canvas and paints, it is worth studying online encyclopedias in order to learn or refresh your memory of the concepts of light and shadow, line and shading, perspective and plane, front and background, color separation and contrast...

And if you are still a beginner and do not have experience in creating paintings by numbers, then it is better to strictly follow the instructions that are in each set. And when you master the basic techniques of this type of painting, you can already develop a wealth of your own techniques and tricks. Moreover, there are not so many basic techniques that significantly facilitate drawing.

"Magnificent Four" methods of coloring pictures by numbers

There are 4 principles for painting a canvas. You will remember them without difficulty, because they are unusually logical and functional, they are already suggested to anyone who draws common sense and convenience.

From light to dark

By painting over white, yellow, blue or pink areas at the very beginning, you will avoid accidental marks. After all, it is much easier to erase or cover up a pastel shade with another color than a bright or dark color.

If you color all the large details of the picture at the very beginning, then you will not only avoid the blunders and blots mentioned above, but you will also be able to correctly arrange the nuances and draw small details, put the right strokes and highlights. This way it will be easier to compare the “small things” with the main semantic spots of the picture: you must admit, by painting over the vase and the three largest buds in it, it will be easier for you to place medium-sized flowers and leaves of the bouquet next to each other.

Moving in this direction, you will definitely not smear the design already applied on the edge with your shirt sleeve or elbow. As a rule, it is in the middle of the picture that classical artists place main image, be it a hut in a pastoral landscape or a bowl of fruit in a delicious still life.

How to hold a brush and make strokes?

The brush is easier and more comfortable to hold in the same way as you hold ballpoint pen. Your hand should have support. This is enough so that you do not get tired, and the picture turns out neat. To begin with, you should master the usual strokes: just try to paint over each numbered fragment as evenly as possible, making smooth movements with the brush from left to right (if you are right-handed), applying paint in an equal layer of thickness, without going beyond the contour.

Once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with layer thickness, shading, and even dot painting if that calls for it. artistic design. For example, if you need to draw a heavy rain cloud saturated with water. After all, its lower part is rough and dark, which is well conveyed by small ripples of dots, and threads of rain descend below, which are easiest to imitate with short oblique strokes.

Bright mix: how to mix paints correctly?

As a rule, the paints in a set are already mixed, which is why there are so many numbers in it, because each of them means a certain shade, which sometimes differs only by a fraction of a tone from the previous one. If in the process of drawing you run out desired color, it is quite possible to mix it yourself from existing paints. They usually run out first light colors, because there are usually more light spots in a picture than dark ones, and therefore you just need to slightly dilute with white the tone that is closest in shade to the one you need. It is best to do this on a palette or a sheet of cardboard, and not directly in a jar, so as not to accidentally spoil the entire mass of paint.

Effective and impressive: blurring the boundaries

This is amazing, but with just two techniques - creating clear or blurred boundaries - you can give the picture depth, expressiveness, and professional look. To understand in which area it is worth making the clearest possible outline, and where to slightly blur the edges, just carefully examine these places on the sample reproduction.

This is shine: 3 unique types of varnish

When the painting is ready, you will probably want to give it a gloss and protect it from dust, cracking and fading by covering it with a transparent protective base.

Matte Acrylic varnish is good because it dries unusually quickly and also gives the paints additional brightness. Literally a couple of 6-8 hours after covering the painting, you will be able to proudly hang it on the wall and invite your family and friends to your own vernissage.

Gloss, as the name implies, gives the image a special shine and smoothness. This is a plus if you want to smooth out some roughness, but a minus if you want to emphasize volume. The aforementioned matte finish does a better job of imparting texture.

Craquelure truly magical: it allows you to nobly age completely in moments new picture, covering the surface with a network of intricate cobweb cracks, turning a newly created portrait or landscape into an elegant antique.

Auxiliary materials

Before starting work, you should cover the table with newspaper or film, install bright, but not glaring lighting, and also stock up with toothpicks and cotton swabs. The former will help you draw even the thinnest lines, while the latter will be useful for promptly removing excess paint or correcting a bad stroke. You may also need an additional set of brushes best quality and different diameters, a palette and even an easel if you are going to paint outdoors or in the country.

Don't forget to put a sippy cup of water on the table and some disposable napkins. But don’t rush to open all the jars of paint right away: acrylic thickens quickly, so open them step by step, number by number.

Frame for a man-made masterpiece: choosing the ideal frame

Acrylic perfectly imitates classic oil paint, and therefore it is worthwhile to arrange the finished picture with dignity. A textured, slightly recessed and gilded or silver-plated frame in the Baroque style: with fine ligature, vignettes or vines will suit almost any subject. After all, then the image will acquire the proper volume and become worthy decoration your home art gallery!

Do you admire the paintings of great artists, but are deprived of talent in painting? Do you dream of creating a work of art, but you yourself can only depict “stick, stick, cucumber - here comes a little man”? Do you want to instill a craving for high art to your children, but don’t know how?
There is a way out.

This is a coloring by numbers. It allows anyone to draw their own real picture.

The principle of creation is exactly the same as in coloring books that are familiar to us from childhood: the outline of the image is divided into separate areas that need to be painted over with a certain color. Only now, instead of a small piece of paper - a large canvas, instead of pencils and markers - brushes and bright acrylic paints, and, of course, instead of simplified sketchy plots - full-fledged compositional landscapes, still lifes and portraits.

So, what is a paint-by-numbers kit?

Firstly, this is the base (canvas), that is, the canvas. The base has the texture of canvas and is pre-primed. Contours are drawn on it future painting and the numbers of paints that need to be painted over the corresponding areas are indicated.

The canvas has dimensions that exactly correspond to the dried size of the finished painting (in this case, it is 40 x 50 cm), and allowances for attaching the canvas to the stretcher. The subframe itself is not included in the delivery set, but you can very easily make it yourself from slats with a cross-section of 20 x 20. However, if you are an amateur in carpentry, you can look for kits in China that include a collapsible subframe.

The canvas is sent rolled up. During transportation, mechanical damage to the canvas is possible, which can radically ruin appearance paintings. Therefore, a sleeve is inserted into the roll to protect the canvas.

Secondly, this is a set of acrylic paints. The paints are packaged in small jars marked with numbers. The paint numbers correspond to the numbers of the areas to be painted on the canvas. This set uses 24 colors. The paints are ready to use. There is no need to worry: the volume of paints of each color is guaranteed to be enough for the entire picture.

Thirdly, these are brushes for painting (there are three of them - of different thicknesses) and a set for attaching a picture to the wall (but the hooks are only suitable for wooden, plywood or plasterboard walls).

And finally, a scheme for applying paints to canvas and miniature color image future painting.

The entire set was packed in an “envelope” with inflatable air cavities and was not damaged during the shipping process.

The “drawing” process is quite simple and accessible to anyone, even those without any drawing skills. Moreover, it is accessible to children - after all, they enjoy watching how adults draw and willingly try to do it themselves.

You just need to carefully and carefully paint over the areas on the canvas with paint of the appropriate color (number).
Paints applied to canvas dry quickly, so images adjacent to the newly painted areas can be painted over after a very short period of time - this significantly speeds up the work. Paints do not dry out in closed jars, so the “painting” process can be interrupted at any time and resumed from the same place later. This is especially true for children, for whom “inspiration” can temporarily leave at any, most unexpected moment.
Just don’t forget to rinse your brushes in water before changing the paint color and at the end of the work phase.

Several stages of “writing” a still life by a child:

In final form:

The resulting picture looks good. All that remains is to build a frame from a baguette - and welcome to the vernissage (on the wall)!

The time spent working on a canvas depends on the pace of drawing, the size and complexity of the painting.

Of course, a painting “painted” by numbers is inferior to a real artistic one. visual work as in the drawing small parts, and in terms of color rendition. This, so to speak, is the cost of the limitations of the color separation method. You can fix it by applying additional strokes and mixing. different colors to obtain intermediate colors. But this is a more advanced level. I think that those who have the slightest understanding of these issues do not need such coloring books...

In general, in addition to the general aesthetic effect, drawing pictures by numbers helps develop a child’s attentiveness, accuracy and perseverance.

And for an adult, it is a distraction from everyday routine worries, a pleasant hobby, and even a kind of anti-stress therapy.

We are happy with the purchase.
