When was Kurt Cobain born? Controversial version of death

08.04.2019
Kurt Cobain is an American rock musician and singer, songwriter, artist, soloist of the cult rock- Nirvana bands. Even during his lifetime, he became a symbol of his generation, and Nirvana's style influenced many of today's famous musicians.

Childhood and family

Kurt Cobain (Kurt Donald Cobain) was born on February 20, 1967 in the town of Aberdeen, Washington, in poor family car mechanic Donald Leland and housewife Wendy Elizabeth. Kurt had Scottish, English, Irish, German and French roots. In 1970, the boy had a sister, Kim (Kimberly).

According to relatives, already at the age of two, Kurt showed the ability to music - even then he sang with might and main songs Beatles. Later, Cobain discovered the music of rock legends - AC / DC, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen and Kiss.

He often went to rehearsals with his aunt and uncle, who performed in a country ensemble. At the age of seven, Aunt Marie Earle gave Kurt a Mickey Mouse drum kit.

When the boy was only 9 years old, his parents divorced. This had a very strong effect on him - he became gloomy and withdrawn, it seemed to him that the former world collapsed before his eyes.

Cobain later admitted: “Then I was ashamed of my parents. Because of their divorce, I could not communicate properly with my classmates. I wanted so badly to have an ordinary complete family with mother and father. I wanted that reassurance and protection from them, and because I didn't have that, I got mad at my parents for years."

For some time, Kurt lived with his mother, but then moved to his father. At this time, Kurt's uncle, whom the boy loved very much, committed suicide. Soon his father remarried, but Kurt could not get along with his stepmother and left his father. Then he began to live with Donald's parents, then with relatives on his mother's side.

At the age of 14, Kurt began learning to play the guitar. His first teacher was Warren Mason, a musician bands The beachcombers. Soon Kurt met the members of the Aberdeen Melvins band. It was then that Cobain became interested in punk rock - his tastes were influenced by the famous British Sex Pistols, whose music he did not even hear at first, but only read about it in magazines. He was very interested in the description of the Sex Pistols style as "little music and a lot of screaming", and he wanted to create something similar himself.

After leaving school, Kurt wandered a little, but then he still got a job - for some time he worked as a cleaner in the hospital where he was born. On May 18, 1986, Kurt was arrested for trespassing and drinking alcohol. He served eight days in prison.

The birth of Nirvana

Kurt Cobain founded the band in 1985 Fecal matter, which included bassist Dale Crover, drummer Greg Hokanson and Kurt Cobain himself as vocalist and guitarist. The team disbanded a year later. Kurt wanted to create new group, so he started distributing the Fecal Matter demo. The recording was heard by guitarist Chris Novoselic, a friend of Kurt's.

New team, in which a third member soon appeared - drummer Aaron Burkhard, changed several names, as a result, the choice was stopped by Nirvana. In 1988, the band's first single, Love Buzz/Big Cheese, was released, and in 1989, Nirvana's first album, Bleach, went on sale.

In 1991, Nirvana's second album "Nevermind" appeared and literally shot to the masses. This was not expected, and the musicians themselves did not really want it - the hype and admiration of the crowd were not included in the plans of the group defending its independent sound. The album sold out at 400,000 copies a week - such numbers were not dreamed of by their colleagues in the shop, Sonic Youth, who collaborated with the same label. In 1992, "Nevermind" moved the album "Dangerous" by Michael Jackson on the Billboard 200 chart.

Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

The main breakthrough of the album was the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", although the first single was planned to be released more melancholy, but no less explosive "Lithium".

Cobain later admitted that he hated "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the countless times he had to perform it in concert. Nevertheless, it was this song that literally became the anthem and protest of generation X, and the subsequent "Ys" and "Zets". Kurt hated popularity even more - the crowds of fans at concerts gave him more and more discomfort, and the ridicule of connoisseurs of alternative music pissed him off.

Nirvana - "Lithium"

Released in 1993 new album groups - "In Utero" with the popular songs "Heart-Shaped Box", "Rape Me", "All Apologies". Despite the fact that Nirvana tried to make the sound heavier on this record, the disc sold well, and the catchy compositions were a success with the listeners.

Nirvana was for the most part an apolitical group, but Kurt often used the status to draw attention to issues such as homophobia, sexism, racism. At some concerts, he arranged improvisational performances, shocking the audience.

Nirvana - "About A Girl"

Despite the fact that many consider Nirvana the progenitors of the grunge genre, this is not entirely true. Kurt Cobain's band brought the genre into the mainstream of rock music, but its founding fathers include Soundgarden, Melvins and The U-Men. "Grunge" from English means "dirt", "neglect", "anguish", this style is characterized by dirty guitar sound, sound distortion, "lazy" vocals with wheezing and screaming.

Personal life of Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain met Courtney Love around 1989 or 1990 at one of the concerts in Portland, where she also performed with her band. In 1991, Courtney met Kurt again, and an affair began between them. In 1992, Kurt and Courtney got married on the Hawaiian island of Waikiki. At this time, Love was already pregnant, and on August 18, 1992, she gave birth to a girl, Frances Bean Cobain.

Shortly before the birth of her daughter, Courtney mentioned in an interview that she used heroin during pregnancy, but when she found out about her situation, she gave up drugs. She had no idea what such a confession would turn into for her: after the birth of Francis, a case was initiated against the Cobains to deprive them of their parental rights. The trial lasted several months, as a result, the Cobains won the case, but were required to undergo regular drug tests. Kurt was deeply hurt by such suspicions, because he was loving husband and caring father.

Drug addict

From childhood, Cobain was in poor health. He suffered from chronic bronchitis and severe pain in the stomach, which the doctors could not diagnose. From the age of 13, Cobain used marijuana, smoked, took drugs and hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD. He began using heroin in the hope of getting rid of stomach pains, but they only became more frequent, and the drug quickly became an addiction.

On March 4, 1994, in Rome, Cobain almost died from an overdose of Rohypnol. He took about fifty pills, which he then washed down with champagne. Courtney found him unconscious and called ambulance. Then Kurt said that it came out by negligence, but many were sure that it was a suicide attempt.

On the 20th of March 1994, Cobain decided to undergo therapy at the Exodus rehabilitation center in California. On March 30, Kurt flew to Los Angeles to begin treatment. However, on April 1, he escaped from the hospital.

DeathThe true cause of the death of Kurt Cobain is still unknown to anyone

After cremation, some of Cobain's ashes were scattered over the Wishka River in his native Aberdeen, and Courtney kept some for herself. An unofficial place of worship for the memory of the singer is a memorial bench in Viretta Park, which is located near last home Cobain in Seattle. The greenhouse above the garage where Kurt's body was found was demolished in 1997 and the house was sold.

"The Last Days" (Trailer)

In addition to numerous documentaries about the life and death of Kurt, Gus Van Sant dedicated the film The Last Days to him in 2005, in which Michael Pitt starred as the legendary musician.

February 20 to the leader American group Nirvana Kurt Cobain would have been 45 years old.

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington, near Seattle. Kurt was of mixed Scottish, English, Irish, German and French blood.

Kurt's father was 21-year-old Donald Leland Cobain, a mechanic at a service station, Irish by birth, his mother was Don's wife, 19-year-old Wendy Elizabeth Cobain ( maiden name Freudenberg, Irish German descent who changed several professions during her life. She worked as a teacher, and a secretary, and a waitress in a bar. Kurt also had a sister, Kim (Kimberly), who was born in April 1970.

At the age of two, Kurt showed an aptitude for music, which is not surprising since he was born into a family of musicians. According to Aunt Marie Earle, Wendy's 14-year-old sister, at the age of four, the boy sang and wrote songs. She even tried to teach him to play the guitar, which she herself played, but nothing worked. Kurt enjoyed listening to songs by artists such as The Beatles and The Monkees; he often visited rehearsals with his aunt and uncle, who were performing at that time in a country ensemble. Wendy sang well, and his great-uncle Delbert made a career as an Irish tenor in The King of Jazz (1930). Cobain has been described as a happy, excitable and sensitive child. When he was seven years old, Aunt Marie Earl gave him a Mickey Mouse drum kit. Kurt loved drawing his favorite cartoon and movie characters like Aquaman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Disney characters like Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Pluto. Here's what Kurt had to say about his childhood.

At the age of 14 Kurt gave up drumming and started learning to play the guitar given to him by his uncle Chuck for his birthday. Warren Mason, musician of The Beachcombers, became his first teacher. Around the same time, he became interested in punk after reading an article about the Sex Pistols in Creem magazine. It was almost impossible to buy their records in Aberdeen, so he had a rather vague idea of how such music should sound (according to him own definition- “three chords and a lot of screaming”), but in his heart Kurt was already on fire with the idea of creating a punk band. Soon he met the members of the Aberdeen Melvins, who played music that combined elements of punk and hard rock (later this style was called "grunge"). At the Melvins, he met Chris Novoselic.

In 1985, Kurt formed a group called Fecal Matter; It consisted of bass guitarist Dale Crover, drummer Greg Hokanson and actually Cobain - vocalist and guitarist. About a year later, the team disbanded without releasing a single disc; after that, Kurt began to distribute the demo of Fecal Matter among his acquaintances - he wanted to create a new group. One of the tapes went to Chris Novoselic, Kurt's friend. For a while he seemed to forget about it, but a few months later he suddenly started a conversation with Cobain about how they should form a rock band (he listened to the tape and liked the material). The newly formed team (in which a third member soon appeared - drummer Aaron Burkhard) changed several names: "Skid Row", "Ted Ed Fred", "Bliss", "Pen Cap Chew", but in the end it was chosen " Nirvana ". "I was looking for a title that was pretty or nice," Cobain explained. In 1988, the group's first single, Love Buzz/Big Cheese, was released, and the following year it went on sale. debut album Nirvana Bleach.

In 1991, the 2nd album was released Nirvana - Nevermind, which was very popular; compositions Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, Come As You Are became hits on MTV, the disc had the status of "diamond". Cobain was puzzled unexpected success album: “I certainly couldn’t let my ego admit that we are so big that we deserve so much attention… I felt stupid that there are many bands in the underground scene that are as good as us, or better than us, but for some reason only we attract attention. He also noted that he was somewhat dissatisfied with the sound of the disc - very much, in his opinion, "smooth" and "pop". But, be that as it may, it was with the release of Nevermind that Nirvana gained popularity and commercial success, and Kurt was proclaimed the "voice of a generation" (a title that he denied all his life).

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love first met in 1989. Subsequently, both claimed that even then they were imbued with mutual sympathy for each other. In 1991, Love met Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. He brought her back to Kurt, noticing that Cobain and Courtney had a mutual interest in each other; soon the couple began an affair, and in 1992 Kurt and Courtney got married (by that time Love was already pregnant with their child). According to Cobain, he "couldn't believe how happy he was": "At times I even forget that I'm in a band, I'm just blinded by love ... I know it sounds strange, but it's true."
Frances Bean Cobain was born on August 18, 1992, the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

Kurt was a loving husband and caring father, which, at first glance, did not really fit with his image. “Every time I watch a television show about dying children… I can’t stop crying,” he writes in an unsent letter to his father. - Every day I am haunted by the thought that I can lose my child. I even get a little nervous when I take it in the car, afraid of getting into an accident.

On April 8, 1994, an electrician named Gary Smith arrived at the Cobain home at 171 Lake Washington Blvd East in Seattle at 08:30 to install the security system. Smith rang the house several times, but no one answered the door. Then he noticed a Volvo car parked in the garage next to the house, and decided that the owners of the house, perhaps in the garage or greenhouse, which was located directly above the garage. Smith checked the garage, then climbed the stairs to the greenhouse. Through the glass door of the greenhouse, Smith noticed the body and assumed that someone was sleeping, however, looking closely, he saw blood at the left ear and a gun lying across the body. So it was discovered Kurt Cobain . At 8:45 a.m., Gary Smith called the police and the local radio station. Kurt left a suicide note written in red pen. Below is full text this note.

For Bodda it is spoken

In the language of an experienced simpleton who would rather be castrated, an infantile whiner. This note will be fairly easy to understand. All warnings from 101 punk rock lessons over the years. from my first exposure to, let's say, ethics related to independence and the perception of your community, turned out to be very correct. For many years I have not felt excited when I listen to or create music, and also when I read or write. I can't put into words how embarrassed I am about this. For example, when we are backstage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowd begins, it does not move me, like Freddie Mercury, who seems to have loved, bathed in the love and adoration of the crowd. This is something I admire and envy to no end. The fact is, I can't fool you. None of you. It's just not fair to you or me. The worst crime I can imagine is ripping people off while pretending I'm having 100% fun. Sometimes I feel like I have to start a timer before going on stage. I tried everything in my power to be grateful for it (and I am grateful, God, believe me, I am grateful, but this is not enough). I appreciate what I am and we have touched and entertained a lot of people. I'm probably one of those narcissists who only appreciate something when they lose it. I'm too sensitive. I need to become a little deaf in order to regain the enthusiasm that I once had as a child. During last three tours I felt a lot more grateful to all the people I know personally and to the fans of our music, but I still can't get over the annoyance, guilt and compassion towards everyone. There is something good in all of us and I think I just love people too much. So much that it makes me fucking sad. Sad little, sensitive, ungrateful, fish, Jesus man! Why don't you just enjoy it? I don't know. I have a goddess wife who oozes ambition and compassion, and a daughter who reminds me too much of who I was. Full of love and joy, kissing everyone she meets, because everyone is good and will not harm her. And it terrifies me to the point where I can hardly do anything. I can't bear to think that Frances will become the pathetic, self-destructive death rocker that I have become. There are good things in my life, very good things, and I am grateful, but from the age of seven I began to hate all of humanity in general. Only because it seems so easy for people to get along with each other and have empathy. Sympathy! I think it's only because I love and empathize with people too much. Thank you all from the depths of my burning sick stomach for your letters and care in last years. I have too much of a fickle, capricious child! I no longer have passion, so remember: it's better to burn out than fade away. peace, love, compassion. Kurt Cobain

Francis and Courtney, I'll be at your altar.

Please don't stop Courtney

for the sake of francis

for her life, which will be much happier

without me. I love you. I love you!

The protocol of the inspection of the scene was drawn up formally, without an in-depth analysis of the details. According to one version of the investigation, Cobain injected himself with a dose of heroin that was incompatible with life, and shot himself in the head with a gun. Forensics also concluded that Kurt died on April 5 and his dead body stayed in the house for three days. There is also speculation about the deliberate murder of Kurt. The list of suspects unofficially included Courtney Love.

After cremation, some of Cobain's ashes were scattered over the Wishka River in his native Aberdeen, and Courtney kept some for herself. The unofficial place of worship for the singer's memory is a memorial bench in Viretta Park, located near Cobain's last home in Seattle. Kurt Donald Cobain (1965-1994) is one of the famous musicians XX century, founder, vocalist and guitarist legendary rock band Nirvana.

Childhood

The boy was born in 1965 in the small town of Aberdeen. His father was a mechanic. He was a car repairer. Mother periodically changed classes, worked as a teacher and a waitress. In general, it was the most ordinary, unremarkable family.

However, the same could not be said about the boy's immediate family. His uncle (mother's brother) was a member of The Beachcombers. My aunt was a talented touring guitarist. But greatest success achieved by his great-uncle. At one time he was a famous tenor.

Thanks to this environment, the boy's abilities did not go unnoticed. He was not yet three years old when he already listened to music with pleasure and performed songs by The Beatles. For a long time this British group remained his favorite. Later, he discovered many others that are legendary in our time.

Kurt grew up as a sociable and inquisitive boy. But everything changed when my parents divorced. He was only 9 years old, and the usual well-established life had already collapsed.

At first the boy stayed with his mother, but then he decided to live with his father. However new wife the latter did not find a common language with him, so Kurt again changed his place of residence and began to wander around relatives.

The suicide of his beloved uncle was an even bigger blow for Cobain than the collapse own family. Many believe that it significantly influenced the fate of the musician himself.

After graduating from school, Kurt for a long time rushed about in search of his corner and work, until he ended up behind bars for drinking alcohol and illegal entry into private territory.

The birth of Nirvana

The first group created by Cobain in 1985 was called Fecal Matter. She existed less than a year, but became an important step on the ladder to fame. It was the recordings of Fecal Matter that attracted the attention of like-minded people to Kurt, who, together with him, founded a new group and gave it beautiful name Nirvana.

Already the first single, released in 1988, made it clear that future stars appeared in the world. The album Bleach was a huge success, the number of fans of the group began to increase in geometric progression.

The second album, Nevermind, was released in 1991. It was he who allowed the group to go to world stage. Nirvana was talked about on all continents, and the group's compositions topped the most prestigious charts. Kurt Cobain himself has become the idol of a whole generation who heard their own thoughts and ideas in his songs.

In 1993, Nirvana released the last studio album In Utero. With this collection, the team wanted to show that their music is not intended for the masses, but world fame, rather characteristic of pop culture, does not interest musicians. However, contrary to all plans, the album still went down in history.

Personal life

Despite the image created on stage, Cobain turned out to be a loving husband and father. His acquaintance with Courtney Love led to an early marriage of the musicians. In 1992, their daughter was born. Her parents gave her the name Frances Bean.

Most Cobain fans never accepted Courtney. For them, she forever remained a woman who ruined the life of an idol, and then became the reason for his departure. Be that as it may, but Kurt loved his wife and doted on his little daughter. Most likely, their family would have lived happily ever after if not for drugs. And not predilection for them both parents.

According to the stories of Courtney herself, she repeatedly tried to deal with her husband's harmful addiction. However, many people close to them claim that she herself was far from white and not at all fluffy.

In March 1994, Kurt agreed to undergo another course of treatment for addiction, but his desire quickly dried up. On March 30, he entered a rehabilitation clinic, and escaped two days later.

Death

April 8, 1994 was a black day for all fans of the artist. Kurt Cobain was found dead in a greenhouse own house. By official version He died from a gunshot to the head. He shot himself, as the discovered suicide note.

To this day, the musician's fans claim that he could not have committed suicide. However, nothing can be proven.

Kurt Cobain was cremated and his ashes were scattered over the river in his hometown.

Kurt Donald Cobain. Born February 20, 1967 - died April 5, 1994. Songwriter, musician and artist, best known as the vocalist and guitarist for the North American rock band Nirvana.

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 at Grays Harbor Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington, the son of housewife Wendy Elizabeth (maiden name Fradenburg) and car mechanic Donald Leland Cobain. Cobain's pedigree included Irish, English, Scottish and German roots. Cobain's Irish ancestors migrated in 1875 from the county Northern Ireland Tiron to Cornwall, Ontario, Canada and then to Washington. Cobain has a family younger sister, Kimberly, born April 24, 1970.

Kurt grew up in musical family: his maternal uncle, Chuck Fradenburg, performed with the band under titled The Beachcombers, Aunt Mary Earle played guitar in various local bands, great-uncle Delbert made a career as a tenor and appeared in the 1930 film King of Jazz. He showed interest in music quite early: according to his relatives, already at the age of two he sang the songs of The Beatles with pleasure. At the age of four, he wrote his first song about a trip to a local park. At the age of seven, he received a drum set from Mary Earl as a gift. In addition to the ability to music, he showed himself as a talented little artist. In this he was encouraged by his grandmother, a professional artist.

For some time the boy lived with his mother, but he did not have a relationship with her new friend, 22-year-old Mike Medak, and he moved to his father in Montesano. Donald soon married Jenny Westby, who had two children, Mindy and James. In January 1979, Jenny gave birth to another child, Chad, stepbrother Kurt. But Kurt also did not get along with Jenny, and therefore he had to leave his father - the boy lived either with Leland and Iris, Donald's parents, or with relatives on his mother's side.

At the age of 14, Kurt gave up drumming and began learning to play the guitar given to him by his uncle Chuck for his birthday. Warren Mason, musician of The Beachcombers, became his first teacher. Around the same time, Kurt became interested in punk after reading an article about the Sex Pistols in Creem magazine. It was almost impossible to buy their records in Aberdeen, so he had a rather vague idea of what such music should sound like (by his own definition - “three chords and a lot of screaming”), but in his heart Kurt was already on fire with the idea of creating a punk band. Soon he met the members of the Aberdeen Melvins, who played music that combined elements of punk and hard rock (later this style was called "grunge"). Chris Novoselic also came there, as a result of which they became friends.

In 1984, Wendy Cobain married Pat O'Connor, an alcoholic dock worker who once broke Wendy's arm. Kurt returned to his mother's house, but his relationship with his family did not develop well. After leaving school, he decided not to go to art college; his mother put him before a choice - either he goes to work or leaves home. He had to leave. For most of the rest of the time, Kurt lived with his friends, moving from house to house every day. Often he had to sleep in the yards of friends' houses, the rest of the time he spent in the library, "waiting for the end of the day." According to Kurt, he lived for some time under the bridge of the Uishka River, which inspired him to write the song "Something in the Way". Later, he still had to get a job. On May 18, 1986, Kurt was arrested for trespassing and drinking alcohol and was imprisoned for 8 days.

In 1985, Kurt formed a group called Fecal Matter; It consisted of bass guitarist Dale Crover, drummer Greg Hokanson and actually Cobain - vocalist and guitarist. About a year later, Fecal Matter broke up without releasing a single disc; after that, Kurt began to distribute the Fecal Matter demo among his acquaintances - he wanted to create a new group. One of the cassettes went to Krist Novoselic, Kurt's friend. For a while, he seemed to forget about it, but a few months later he suddenly started a conversation with Cobain about the fact that they should start a rock band (he listened to the tape and liked the material). The newly formed team (which soon included a third member - drummer Chad Channing) changed several names: "Skid Row", "Ted Ed Fred", "Bliss", "Pen Cap Chew", but in the end "Nirvana" was chosen. "I was looking for a title that was pretty or nice," Cobain explained. In 1988, the band's first single, Love Buzz/Big Cheese, was released, and Nirvana's debut album, Bleach, went on sale the following year.

In 1991, Nirvana's second album, Nevermind, was released, which became an unexpected breakthrough for the group into the mainstream. The single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", to everyone's surprise, became a hit on MTV (although "Lithium" was originally supposed to be the lead single from the record). sudden success Nirvana on the international stage brought the Seattle grunge scene to the attention of the public and spawned a wave of imitators. The media called Nirvana "the flagship of generation X", and Cobain himself - "the voice of the generation." Cobain himself experienced discomfort from the unexpected popularity that had fallen on his head: he himself saw himself primarily as a representative of the independent rock scene, and he was annoyed that he had become the idol of the masses. The band's next album, In Utero, was deliberately made much heavier and darker in order to scare off the general public and proclaim Nirvana's return to its "independent" roots (the album was produced by Steve Albini, leader of the noise rock band Big Black). However, the album, although it did not become as successful as Nevermind, was still popular with listeners and reached high positions in the charts.

Although Nirvana was an "apolitical" band and did not place as much emphasis on social issues as many punk bands did, Cobain nonetheless used his fame to get his message across to the public. He was an active advocate for the rights of women and gays and supported pro-choice (despite the fact that he personally admired motherhood and women mothers), as a result of which he received repeated threats from militant pro-lifers. The liner notes for the Incesticide compilation included the words: "If any of you hate homosexuals, people of a different race, or women for anything, please do us a favor - go fuck yourself and leave us alone! Don't come to our concerts and don't buy our albums."

Family life:

Kurt Cobain and his future wife Courtney Love met in 1990 at a concert in a Portland club, where both performed with their bands. Courtney, who, according to her, saw Nirvana at a concert in 1989 and already drew attention to Cobain, immediately showed interest in him, but Kurt behaved evasively. He later explained: "I wanted to be single for another year, but I realized that I was really crazy about Courtney, and it was difficult to stay away from her for so many months." In 1991, after learning from Dave Grohl that Cobain had a keen interest in her, Courtney again began to "stalk" him. They began an affair. In 1992, Love discovered that she was expecting a child from Cobain, and on February 24, 1992, their marriage ceremony took place on a Hawaiian beach in Waikiki. Courtney was wearing a dress that once belonged to actress Frances Farmer, whom both newlyweds admired, and Kurt was dressed in pajamas - "because he was too lazy to put on a suit."

The daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain, was born on August 18, 1992. She got her name from Frances McKee, the vocalist of Cobain's favorite Scottish twi-pop band The Vaselines. Shortly before the birth of the girl, it happened sadly famous interview Courtney with Vanity Fair's Lynn Hirshberg: In it, Courtney mentioned that she used heroin for some time during her pregnancy, not yet knowing that she would have a child. Hirshberg, however, made it look like Love continued to use drugs after she found out she was pregnant, and expressed her "concern" about what was happening. Courtney said that the journalist distorted her words, but she insisted that she had records. The Cobains did not immediately realize that because of this article, a huge stain falls on their reputation. Shortly after Frances was born, they had to deal with law enforcement - the Los Angeles Department of Children's Affairs filed a case against them to deprive the spouses of parental rights, based precisely on this publication. Litigation lasted several months, as a result, the Cobains were still allowed to raise their daughter on their own, but they were required to regularly undergo drug tests. Kurt was deeply offended by what was happening, believing that against him and his wife was real war, and compared himself with Frances Farmer, whom many considered the victim of a conspiracy (in 1942, the actress, who had visited the USSR a few years earlier and was suspected of communist sympathies, was forcibly hospitalized with manic-depressive psychosis and subjected to a lobotomy). The following year's album In Utero featured a number of scathing references to the Hirshberg article scandal and the "witch hunt" launched by the press against Courtney Love.

On April 8, 1994, an electrician named Gary Smith arrived at the Cobain home at 171 Lake Washington Blvd East in Seattle at 8:30 a.m. to install a security system. Through the glass door of the greenhouse, Smith noticed the body and assumed that someone was sleeping, however, looking closer, he saw blood at the left ear and a gun lying across the body. The greenhouse above the garage where Kurt's body was found was demolished in 1997 and the house sold.

Kurt Cobain holds the record for earning more after his death than during his lifetime. As of 2011, the copyright holders of his work have earned over $800 million.

On April 5, 2011, a monument to Kurt Cobain was unveiled in Aberdeen, Washington. The monument is an enlarged concrete copy of one of the musician's guitars, over which a bronze ribbon "flutters" with lines from the band's song "On a Plain". The opening was attended by Nirvana's first drummer Aaron Burkhard and Kurt's grandfather Leland Cobain, with whom Kurt had a very warm relationship.

The Kurt Cobain Museum has opened in Seattle, where his manuscripts, guitars, photographs, etc. were displayed.

On July 27, 2011, in Aberdeen, Washington, the City Council wanted to name a bridge after Cobain, but Aberdeen authorities refused to do so due to the fact that he showed hostility towards this city and its inhabitants.

In September 2013, the house Kurt Cobain grew up in was put up for sale. The object was previously valued at $67,000, but the musician's mother, Wendy O'Connor, set a price of $500,000 for it. The musician's relatives say they are ready to consider partnership proposals to make a museum in the house. According to them, stencilled names of his favorite bands are still on the walls in Kurt's room. “We decided to sell the house to create Kurt's legacy,” the musician's sister Kim Cobain told the agency. - Of course, we have mixed feelings, because we all loved this house very much, many wonderful memories are associated with it. But our family left Washington State a long time ago, and we feel it's time to leave home." The house was built in 1923. The Cobains bought him in 1969 when Kurt was two years old. He lived in this house until late adolescence: up to nine years - with both parents, and after their divorce - with their mother.

Kurt Cobain - the legendary rock musician, actor, super popular performer, was born in a suburb of Seattle on February 20, 1967.

Childhood

Kurt was the firstborn in the family of a simple auto mechanic and a waitress. However, his mother had an excellent education and for some time she worked as a teacher. But when the family had children, it took a freer schedule to spend more time with them. Three years later, a girl appeared in the family, Kurt's sister.

When the parents were too busy, the children were often left in the care of their mother's sister, Aunt Marie Earle. She was fond of music and often listened to AC / DC, Queen, Kiss and others popular groups, to which he became addicted with early childhood Kurt. By the way, it was his aunt who discovered his extraordinary musical ability. He could sing a musical phrase of any complexity.

For his seventh birthday, Kurt got a super-nice surprise - a children's version drum set, a gift to your beloved aunt. But on the eighth he was waiting for the sad news about the divorce of his mother and father. She greatly undermined the psyche of the baby, who loved both. At first, the boy stayed with his mother, but very soon moved to his father.

After his parents divorced, he became very withdrawn. Kurt didn’t really like to communicate with strangers before, but now his only outlet was an imaginary friend Bodd, because of whom his mother even took him to a psychiatrist, who, fortunately, did not find other oddities in the boy.

Soon the father had a girlfriend, who then moved into their new house. Not too sociable strange teenager did not find with her mutual language and began to often leave home, spending the night now with some relatives, then with others.

Needless to say, with such a lifestyle, he had practically no time for normal studies, and he had practically no desire to take lessons. But somehow he finished school.

The birth of Nirvana

Kurt began to seriously study music at the age of 14, when he managed to get a real guitar. And he was lucky with the teacher - by a lucky chance, he became a musician from The Beachcombers, guitarist Warren Mason. He instilled in the boy a feeling musical style which made his game recognizable.

At the same time, the boy first met the other side of musical parties - alcohol and drugs. At the age of 19, he even served 8 days in prison because he and his friends got drunk into someone else's house and yelled songs there. At the beginning of his musical career he was often interrupted by odd jobs, and sometimes even had to go hungry.

He made his first group in 1985. The guys learned seven rock songs, occasionally they managed to perform for little money in local clubs. But, after stretching like this for about a year, the musicians fled to different sides. Kurt began distributing non-professional recordings of his band in the hope of collecting another one.

Kurt's friend Chris Novoselic was the first to decide to join, and a little later they got a super professional drummer Aaron Burkhard. The team remained without a name for a long time, which changed before each performance, since for some reason all the options did not suit one of the participants. And only on NIRVANA did all three finally agree.

glory and death

The band's first album, Nevermind, simply tore apart the listeners, and its main hit became almost a youth rock anthem. In the blink of an eye, the team became super popular. But it turned out that the guys themselves, and especially Kurt, were not ready for such a turn of events. The musicians were increasingly drowning in alcohol and drugs, and their performances were often accompanied by scandalous stories.

So, in 1992, they simply smashed crazy expensive equipment on the MTV stage, where they were invited to perform at the opening ceremony as stars. Cobain simply hated his main hit, which by this time sounded from almost all American windows. And it was he who was asked to perform by the organizers of the show.

Kurt, on the other hand, insisted on performing his favorite composition, the title of which translates as "bury me." Naturally, the management of MTV was categorically against it. We agreed that Nirvana would perform another hit, Lithium.

But Kurt decided to avenge the spent nerves and the first chords of the introduction with "Rape me" sounded, which shocked the audience. But then the band continued to play "Lithium", effectively splitting the instruments on the final chords.

The more famous the group became, and this happened after the release of each subsequent Nirvana album, of which there were only three with the participation of Cobain, the stronger his heroin addiction became. Incidentally, he himself last day claimed that he was taking drugs solely for medicinal purposes, in order to drown out severe stomach pain before performing or recording.

In April 1994, Cobain's body in his own house discovered by an electrician who through the window saw him lying next to a gun and a pool of blood. According to the conclusion of the doctors, death came from a shot in the head, but such an amount of heroin was found in the blood that Kurt would not have survived anyway.

Since there was a suicide note on the table, addressed to the same imaginary friend who had not disappeared since childhood, they did not conduct a criminal investigation, but attributed everything to a banal suicide under the influence of drugs. However, there were those who unofficially believed that Cobain was killed. The body of the musician was cremated, and his ashes were scattered to the wind.

Personal life

The only love of his life was Courtney Love. Although in his early youth he was popular with girls, which he used without any twinge of conscience, changing one partner for another. For Courtney, he immediately had a deep feeling, but for almost two years he did not give up, not wanting to commit himself to a serious relationship.

The initiator of their romance was Courtney, who liked Kurt back in 1989, when Nirvana was just gaining momentum. A year later, she managed to officially meet him at one of the musical parties. But only in 1992, when Courtney became pregnant, Kurt agreed to formalize their union.

With Courtney Love. Wedding.

The wedding was strange. It took place on a Hawaiian beach. Courtney was in wedding dress, taken from a friend, and Kurt himself is in striped pajamas.

The daughter of Kurt and Courtney also inherited a love of art from her parents, but she put it differently - the girl became famous artist. She practically does not remember her father - at the time of his death she was not even two years old.

With daughter

Courtney, until the last day, heroically fought her husband's drug addictions and even called the doctors and the police a couple of times when he locked himself in the room, threatening to commit suicide. But she failed to pull her husband out of the drug quagmire.
