| Classical dances: what are their main types?

Dancing is an art form that needs to be learned. And regardless of whether it will be a waltz, a zumba, or some more modern direction, it will not work right away to make the movements correctly. It is best to enroll your child in a studio that offers dances for beginners, as they will quickly teach you how to perform various exercises. The basis of the choreography is just classical dance. This category also includes ballet art. Here, the correct movements have been practiced for more than a dozen years.

Sometimes the question arises: why bother with the old when there are many more modern trends? Moreover, up to a hundred different styles are offered: hip-hop, shuffle, popping, go-go, etc. But it must be remembered that everything new originates precisely from classical dances, the foundation of which was laid several centuries ago. Only in the classics can you comprehend the most graceful movements of your body: arms, legs, body, head. All these movements have been constantly improved, and today there are even special rules on how to perform them.

Thanks to classical dances, flexibility and coordination of movements develop. This will strengthen the musculoskeletal system, will provide an opportunity to learn how to control your body. Walking movements will become beautiful and elegant, so even on the street it will immediately become noticeable who is dancing. Classical choreography is generally considered to be ballet. This style is very complex and an adult is unlikely to be able to learn how to perform movements. Therefore, parents send their children to classical dance schools at an early age.

Ballroom dance is a harmony of movements and music. All steps and movements are clearly spelled out here. You need to watch your posture, the position of your body. Both music and costumes are chosen for a specific performance. But it is necessary to take into account the fact that ballet is different:
- classic;
- romantic;
- modern.
Therefore, parents should immediately decide what kind of ballroom dance the child should learn.

But ballroom dancing also belongs to the classics. There are different directions, but they all fall into two general categories:
- European;
- Latin American.
The European category includes waltz, tango, foxtrot, as well as quickstep. But in the Latin American category of classical dances there are a little more, but the most basic are: samba, rumba, jive, cha-cha-cha and paso doble. If it is desirable to start practicing ballet at an early age, then there are no age restrictions for classical dances, and you can start learning at any age.

Types of dances taught in the club and in general

Samba

Brazilian dance in double meter; in an expanded sense, the word "samba" is applied to all dances of Brazilian origin. There are two different types of samba: the rural samba, which typically has sharp syncopation, and the urban samba, which has a smoother rhythm. Samba Carioca ( carioca- one of the names of a resident of Rio de Janeiro) is a stylized urban dance. IN professional music samba was introduced by E. Vila-Lobos and Camargo Guarniero.

Cha-cha-cha (Cha-cha-cha)

A dance using the mambo or rumba rhythmic structure was first performed by the Cuban América Orchestra in 1953. The main clock scheme is slow, slow, fast, fast, slow and the last three rhythmic beats corresponding to the syllables "Cha-cha-cha". In the first recordings of the dance on records, it was called mamba. The rhythmic section gradually grew larger and the dancers adjusted to the new slow rhythm, doubling the time signature on counts of 4 and 1 and replacing light hip movements with three pas; after four years, the initial rigidity of the model was overcome, and three pas began to be performed with a typical Cuban swing in the hips.

As in most Latin American dances, the charm of Cha-cha-cha is not in the intricacy of the movements, but in their grace and naturalness.

Rumba

Modern cuban dance African American origin. Rumba is performed in four beats, and the rhythmic pattern changes almost every measure; in general, syncopation and repetitions are characteristic of the rumba rhythm.

In the pubs of Havana, Rumba is often performed to the accompaniment of ensembles using improvised materials - for example, bottles, spoons, pots. The main theme of Rumba is usually eight bars, it is dominated by the rhythmic beginning, while the text and melody are in the background. Rumba entered popular American music in the 1930s.

Jive (Jive)

Jive originated in the 19th century in the southeastern United States, and some believe that it was Negro, others that it is a war dance of the Seminole Indians. The fate of the reincarnations of this dance is endless: from Ragtime to Swing in the 1910s, to Lindy Hope already in the 1920s, to Jegberg in the 1930s and 40s, to rock, boogie in the 1950s, and finally from B- Bop is already a modern version of Jive. One of the eternally fashionable dances that does not leave anyone indifferent.

A very strong influence on Jive is provided by such dances as Rock'n'Roll and Jaterbug. Jive is sometimes referred to as Six Step Rock and Roll. Jive - very fast, consuming a lot of energy. This is the last dance that is danced in competition and the dancers must show that they are not tired and are ready to perform it with more dedication. The fastest of all ballroom dances.

Paso doble

"Paso Doble" means "double step". Although Paso Doble is closely associated with Spain, there are many French terms in it, and this, as some experts note, is reminiscent of the fact that Paso Doble was originally French dance. The militant, restrained rhythm of Paso Doble, undoubtedly related to flamenco, conquered all of Spain, a country in which bullfighting is considered the most ancient and true tradition of the people.

Spanish culture has always preferred the taste of death, challenge and risk. Paso Doble is based in part on a bullfight. The partner represents the bullfighter, and the partner represents his cape or muletu(a piece of bright red cloth in the hands of a matador), sometimes a second bullfighter, and very rarely a bull, usually defeated by the final blow. The nature of the music corresponds to the procession before the bullfight (el paseillo), which usually takes place to the accompaniment of Paso Doble.

Competitive Paso Doble is technically very difficult to perform. Music consists of three main accents (themes). The first accent is divided into the introduction (false accent) and the main part. Most often, the third theme is a repetition of the first. At competitions in sports ballroom dancing, the first two themes are most often performed. However, in addition to the competition, there is also a public form of this dance, widespread in Spain, France and Latin America. It is this Paso Doble that is danced in numerous clubs and dance centers around the world.

Slow Waltz (Slow Waltz)

It originated in the old folk dances of Austria and Southern Germany. The name comes from the German word walzen- “rotate”, “circle”. The closest predecessors of the waltz can be considered a fast "German dance" and slow waltzes - landlers which came into vogue ca. 1800. German dances are found in J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart and L. van Beethoven.

The first mention of, in fact, the waltz dates back to about 1770. At first, this dance aroused strong resistance from both guardians of morality and dance masters. For some time, the waltz existed within the framework of the English Country Dance (country dance), but soon gained independence and came out on top among ballroom dances popular in Vienna, Paris, and New York.

Viennese Waltz

Although the Waltz was a huge success and made a splash at many courts in Europe, in early nineteenth century, the official attitude towards the Waltz was very cautious - at balls in Vienna itself, the waltz was allowed to dance for no more than 10 minutes: the hugs of the gentleman and the lady in the dance were considered not quite appropriate. But it was no longer possible to stop the waltz, and when in 1815, after the victory over Napoleon, the congress of the victorious allies was held in Vienna, the waltz was selflessly danced at all the balls - charming, magical, brilliant. It was then that the waltz acquired its specific feature - an accentuated rhythm, which made this dance more elegant and more romantic.

Tango

Tango is a unique fusion of traditions, folklore, feelings and experiences of many peoples, which has long history. With the creation of the first sociedades de negros at the beginning of the 19th century in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, the word "tango" began to call both these societies themselves and their dance parties. What was played at these parties had little in common with the music that had spread in émigré circles on the Río de la Plata since the mid-19th century. In the ports of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, different cultures merged into one new one, with which the new settlers identified themselves, the tango known to us appeared.

Quickstep

Quickstep (Foxtrot) - by origin fast dance in double meter, performed somewhat slower than One step, after which the Foxtrot gained popularity in the United States approx. 1912. After the First World War, due to the spread in dance music " jazz style”, the term “Foxtrot” came to refer to any jazz-like dance music in two beats (except Latin American tango and congas). In the 1920s, various types of Foxtrot were popular, quickly succeeding each other, among which the Charleston and Blackbottom can be distinguished.

Slow Foxtrot

In the early 1930s, a calmer slow fox("Slow Foxtrot"). He reached his popularity in the 40s of the twentieth century. Melodies written by Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and many other musicians have become real classics. The characteristic steps in the Slow Foxtrot are long and gliding. The rhythm of the dance is less than 30 beats per minute.

Mambo (Mambo)

To Haiti mambo- this is a voodoo priest, for the villagers - a judge, a doctor, a fortuneteller, a spiritual mentor and an organizer of dance fun.

However, there was no dance with that name in Haiti. First similar dances appear in Cuba, where there were large settlements of Haitians. The invention of mambo is attributed to Perez Prado, who performed it at the La Tropicana nightclub in Havana in 1943. In New York, the dance first appeared in New York's Park Plaza Ballroom, a favorite hall of black dancers from Harlem. Mambo made a splash in other clubs in 1947 - in the Palladium and others famous places, such as The China Doll, Havana Madrid and Birdland.

A modified version of "Mambo" (the original dance that Prado danced was greatly simplified - a large number of acrobatic elements were thrown out) was presented to the public in dance studios, resort hotels, in New York and Miami nightclubs. The success was complete! The happy mambo dancers have become endearingly called "Mambonics". The mambo craze didn't last long, today the mambo in the West is just one of the popular Latin American dances. The teachers came to the conclusion that this dance is one of the most difficult, in terms of technique and musicality.

Merengue

Latin American dance of Dominican origin, also adopted in the United States. Moving in double meter, the dancers emphasize the first beat with a walking step, and on the count of "two" they make an inward movement with their knees pressed against each other. The cheerful, slightly syncopated dance melody consists of two periods of 16 measures each. A typical merengue consists of an intro (jaseo) and interludes (jaleo).

Salsa

A style of Latin American music, translated as "sauce", with Native American, Spanish and African ingredients. The term "Salsa" was coined in the 1920s by Chano Pozo, a Cuban percussionist, an immigrant of the first wave to America from Cuba. The boom of Salsa came in the 70s, when huge salsa festivals began to be held in the USA, in Africa and Latin America, gathering stadiums, and a huge number of CDs were recorded. New York immediately made Salsa more commercial and, thanks to the powerful broadcast radio stations of New York record companies and the active distribution of CDs, this particular product reaches us. Indigenous Latin American Salsa is warmer and not so popular here.

Hustle

Translated from English means "hustle, crush." Pair dance based on improvisation and "leading".

The progenitor of the Hustle (more precisely, of all its versions performed on three and six counts) should be considered the Latin American Hustle. Life was given to him by street dancers from among the numerous gypsies and Hispanics (mainly Cubans) in the southern part of the US state of Florida. Trying to adapt their own dance skills (Salsa and swing served as the source material West Coast) to completely inappropriate, but insanely popular Disco rhythms in the early 1970s, the dancers created a unique precedent - a dance in which three movements are performed in four beats of a bar (Latin American Hustle is performed in six counts of “one-two-and-three -four-five-six" - 1-2-&3-4-5-6). The resulting dance was first known as Disco Swing, but in New York it was considered a variation of West Coast Swing and continued to be called West Coast Swing.

Forro (Forro)

Forro (or Foho) - Brazilian folk and social pair dance, which gained its greatest popularity after the Second World War. According to one version forro comes from the word forrobodo, meaning a big noisy party or "noise, din, excitement." According to another version, the word forro derived from English expression "for all"(for everyone - English). English engineers during the construction of the Great Western railway(Great Western Railroad) hosted weekend dances for both their staff and the general public ("for all"). There is also a third version: the word comes from the number of locomotives that English engineers used when ramming railroad tracks, "40" or "Four-oh", simplified by the Brazilians to " forro».

Three main rhythms are distinguished in the Forro dance: slow (xote), original (baiao), fast (arrasta-pe). slow rhythm xote considered the basic style of all Forro. It is quite primitive and easy to implement. Due to the slow pace, the character turns left and right are easy to master even for beginners. Rhythm Baiao takes as a basis xote, but with some additions. So in Baiao the tempo of the dance increases, and swings are added. To cope with the increased rhythm, the dancers make fewer movements on the dance floor. Last Rhythm arrasta-pe is very fast xote. Depending on the region of Brazil, Forro can be presented in several more dance rhythms: xaxado, coco, embolado.

The ancestor of modern Forro is the Brazilian accordionist, composer and singer Luis Gonzaga (1912-1989) . Salsa had a huge influence on the formation of modern Forro dance. It was thanks to her that the spins of the dancers and numerous turns appeared in Forro. The dance is most popular in the northeast of Brazil.

One of the most beautiful views art is dance. This is an expression of emotions, feelings, thoughts, a story about what is happening, the past and the future with the help of music, plasticity, gestures, rhythmic movements. The dance conveys to the audience all the passion, the performer and the author of the work, all the energy and even the inner world. So, even in childhood, we learn what dance is. Remember, two stomps, three swoops? This is not just a series of movements that instill a sense of rhythm and train visual memory. This is the first formation of an image embodied in movement. What was the image then, the answer is simple. Fun, joy and rhythm! This is what it means to dance in childhood. And what's next? Where do we encounter it?

Folk dance

The first folk dance appeared in the ancient tribes, when men danced around imaginary prey before hunting. They put a lot of meaning into their movements, a huge amount of emotion and a fierce desire to defeat the beast. Over time, dances moved away from this plot and beauty, musicality, lyrics, sensual emotionality began to appear in them more. Every nation now has its own. By studying them, one can understand what a folk dance is and what determines its characteristic performance. If this is a Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian dance, the movements in them are smooth, beautiful and wide, like the area where these peoples live, they reflect the calmness and breadth of the soul, the beauty and majesty of nature. And if we look at Georgian dance, then we will see in it mountainous noisy rivers, waterfalls, hot scorching sun, stingy vegetation. After all, the dance movements are sharp, rigid, precise - in men, and in women they are smooth, but mean, short, the steps are small, floating.

classical dance

Classical dance is ballet. There are no plots in it, and fairy tales, and legends, and myths, even literary works classics are the basis contemporary ballets. In them, the dancers must have much greater skill, since it is necessary to tell a complex story without words, only with the help of body movements. There are many performances that are even impossible to imagine in another genre! Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Carmen and many others. Classical ballet in a modern performance is distinguished by a variety of movements, boldness of elements. On his example, you can very simply explain what dance is. The definition is as follows: it is a combination of plasticity, rhythmic movements, gestures, with the music that the dancer moves to. Most often, the dance has its own plot, it tells a story about life, about love, happiness, as well as about human evil, betrayal, about the struggle of these two principles.

Modern dances

If a round dance is a dance, ballet is a classical dance, then what are young people demonstrating on the streets, laying a sheet of wood slabs on the asphalt? This is called the buzzword subculture, and the dance is breakdance. There is no plot, mood, passion, emotions, good and evil. There is only a technical execution of tricks and tricks. It looks beautiful, spectacular, but it has a secondary relation to art. Because this is a real sport, for strong and strong guys.

To express the emotions and feelings that overwhelmed them, expectations and hopes, our ancient ancestors used rhythmic ritual dances. As the person himself and the social environment that surrounded him developed, more and more different dances appeared, becoming more and more complex and refined. Today, even experts will not be able to name the types of dances - all that have been performed by people for centuries. However, dance culture, having passed through the centuries, is actively developing. On the basis of folk and classical, new and modern styles and trends appear.

What it is?

Before considering what types of dances are, let's clarify what it really is? The most short-lived and most complex of the arts, in which the human body and its plastic possibilities are used to create a unique image, is dance.

It is impossible without the personality of the artist and music. Performer based on content piece of music, builds a "picture" of the dance and embodies his vision and sensory perception in motion. This action can be used as a way of social communication and self-expression, a competitive sports discipline and part of a religious cult, as well as a demonstration art form that is constantly evolving and changing. All new styles and forms, different types of dances appear in it, the variety of which puts even specialists into a dead end.

History of appearance

The very first dances of people were ritual, performed by them in the hope of a successful hunt or a bountiful harvest, healing the sick or winning a war. Over time, rhythmic movements were generalized, which was the beginning of the formation of ethnic art, which each of the peoples has its own characteristics and traditions. Types folk dances All the variety of dance steps originated from the basic types of human movements - running, walking, jumping, swinging and turning. Over time, the following types of folk dances appeared: domestic (for oneself), as well as performed for show - cult and stage.

Main directions

Among the various dance styles and directions can be called the following, the most popular and well-known:

  • classical;
  • romantic;
  • modern.

2. Ethnic (folk) dances, reflecting the essence and rituals, traditions and rituals of certain peoples. Among them are the following groups:

  • European;
  • Asian (oriental);
  • African;
  • Latin American.

Each of them contains different kinds folk dances: group, individual, pair and others.

3. Historical - these are dances popular in past eras and performed today, for example, ballo, contradans, polonaise and others.

4. Ballroom, including two main programs: European and Latin American. Here is the name of the types of dances included in the Latin program:

  • jive, also called West Coast Swing or Lindy;
  • rumba;
  • samba;
  • paso doble;
  • cha-cha-cha.

Ballroom dancing of the twentieth century developed on the basis of European dance, in which turn of XIX-XX centuries breathed new life African and Latin American music and dance culture.

In the 1920s in England, a special Council for Ballroom Dancing emerged under the Imperial Society of Dance Teachers. English specialists standardized all the dances known by that time - the waltz, fast and slow foxtrots, tango. So arose competitive dances, and since then ballroom dance has been divided into two areas - sports and social dance. In the 1930s and 1950s, the number of standard ballroom dances increased due to the fact that five Latin American dances were added to them (in this order: rumba, samba, jive, paso doble, cha-cha-cha).

5. In the standard European program, the following types of dances are performed:

  • Argentine tango;
  • quickstep, or fast foxtrot;
  • Viennese waltz;
  • a slow waltz, in which the trajectory of the dancers, unlike the Viennese, is not limited to a circle, but can vary;
  • foxtrot, characterized by undulating and slow, smooth and sliding movements.

Argentine tango

In tango - everything is like in life ... You live every moment - not knowing what awaits you in the next ... and if you try to plan or predict further movement, then there is no drive and as a result you run into a wall ...

Tango - the relationship of two - here and now - like inhaling and exhaling ... and no one will ever know what is happening inside the couple's space ... this is a secret conversation ... without words ... through the body ...

6. Sports dances. Modern dances are divided into those that have appeared:

  • in the early to mid-twentieth century;
  • from the middle of the XX and at the beginning of the XXI century: - club: - street.

In this article, we will consider in more detail what types of dances are in modern choreographic art.

If in the old days dancing was perceived only as an art form, then the complication of technical and choreographic requirements for performance led to the need for excellent physical shape of those who do it. Today, the main types of sports dances are, first of all, ballroom dances. Their feature is the execution by partners of a set of certain mandatory movements and figures to predetermined music. Ballroom sports dances evaluated at competitions consist of three parts: compulsory, original and free.

Over time, new musical and choreographic styles and trends appear. And now such modern views sports dances like break or locking, jumpstyle or pole dance(pole dancing), attract more and more fans from different age groups. To participate in competitions in these areas, athletes need not only excellent choreographic, but also physical training. For those who do not seek to win international competitions, but try to keep their own body in good shape, fitness classes in various dance techniques can be recommended. Twerk, high heels, go-go, strip plastic, belly dance, zumba, sexy R&B, ragga, booty dance - these are the types of dance most in demand among the fair sex. Girls are attracted to them not only by the opportunity to correct the figure, but also to improve plasticity and increase their own self-esteem.

Beginning and middleXXcentury

Such a division into two stages is not accidental. According to many performers of the beginning of the last century, dance as an art form was supposed to reflect new reality, and not adhere to the canons of the old ballet schools “frozen” in time. At this time, such choreographic directions arise, which are still popular today, such as:

Free dance.

Contemporary (Contempo).

Jazz Modern.

Let us dwell in more detail on each of them, since they had a great influence on the formation and development of many styles and trends of modern dance art.

free dance

First of all, this is a special worldview of the performer, formed under the influence of Nietzsche's ideas. Performer, denying the canonical rules ballet choreography, sought to combine dance and real life, manifesting itself as a liberated spirit of creativity. It was on the basis of the free style that such trends as modern and butoh, jazz-modern and contemporary were born and developed.
