I don't have a tablet. I draw very little, and I'm afraid that if I buy it, it will either quietly gather dust on the shelf, or the time, which I already have very little, will be spent not on the goals that I pursue in life. But in fact, drawing with a mouse suits me quite well, this, of course, may seem strange, but it's true.
I use Photoshop CS5 and a Logitech mx518 mouse.
It has been serving me for 5 years, it is very convenient, straight lines, which everyone is so afraid of, are drawn without difficulty. Although I can’t sketch a human figure (it’s also not easy on paper), but here is an example of a sketch of an eye drawn from scratch.
The main difficulty all the same is the lack of knowledge and experience.
I will try to outline the main features of drawing with a mouse:
It is much more convenient to paint with a standard soft brush. hardness(Hardness) ranges from 20 before 70% . flow(pressure) 40% . Opacity(Opacity) is also generally low, but it depends on the situation. I'm afraid that this point can cause negative emotions, because almost all the use of a soft brush is frowned upon, but drawing with a mouse with it is much more convenient. There is no way to adjust the degree of pressure, and therefore, if you take a hard brush, the strokes will turn out to be very rough. So you have to be careful.
I repeat, since it is impossible to adjust the degree of pressure, I additionally use an eraser with a small opacity to erase the ends of the lines a little.
Lots and lots of clicks. In general, you need to very quickly not only click on the drawing itself, but also be able to change the size of the brush, its hardness, transparency and switch to the eraser and back, this should be worked out to automatism.
Now, actually, about the drawing itself.
The idea appeared more than a year ago, and I no longer remember how this image arose in my imagination and what inspired me. I removed some stages in order to get rid of fruitless transformations, since for lack of knowledge in the process I have to change a lot. The end result is different from what I originally posted here, I have finalized it. It is not good to somehow lay out a lesson when he himself is dissatisfied with the drawing.
I was supposed to draw a girl whose hair turns into water and fills a huge lake. I always do first pencil sketch(but since the idea appeared more than a year ago, it has not survived) and circled in Photoshop. As you can see, the idea was a little different and I already started to implement it, but something didn’t work out.
A year later, a slightly different picture presented itself to me, I thought that it must certainly be a waterfall, and not just a stream. Therefore, I changed the sketch already in Photoshop, if there is a base, then this is not a big deal. Work permit - 3773x5500.
The next step is to define colors, which is always difficult for me, despite the fact that I clearly understand where and what color should be. To do this, I create a new layer on top of the sketch. I’ll mention right away that in the future I will create many layers on top, gradually gluing them to the base. I do not use a clear palette, I take colors by eye, or with an eyedropper from already drawn parts.
With the image, I work evenly, but, perhaps, I will highlight the stages of the face, since it is difficult to catch the changes on a small scale.
I start to detail the face, outline the hairstyle. To paint the skin, I use a large, soft brush with a low opacity to soften the color transition. In the process, I turn the face, add more juicy shades of orange, yellow, burgundy tones.
I draw hair with broken lines and erase their ends. First I take a thick brush and gradually make it thinner and thinner. By this principle, I draw absolutely everything, not just hair.
Now back to the whole picture.
At this stage, the main task for me is to correct the anatomy, to prepare a certain framework for further detailing. To do this, I look at the references, I choose a huge number of them, so it is impossible to single out any particular one. Either with the help of transformation, or by drawing over I correct the body. More specifically, I designate the environment.
Then I try to enrich the palette of colors, I add a lot of shades. I draw the sky, I go through the hair and skin with the same colors, trying to make it radiant. Using a hard brush, I make the dress transparent in the leg area, detailing the bodice. I paint the mountains in the background, copy them along with the sky and reflect vertically to make a reflection in the water. Initially, there was a pendant around the neck, which later seemed out of place to me.
I draw the hands and change the look of the braid, instead of the usual one I draw " spikelet”, Because I didn’t take into account the fact that it was he who turned out to be near my face. I draw the sky, the waterfall, the reflection in the water in even more detail, I outline the stems of the plant on the rock.
I had a feeling that there was not enough space around, so I expanded the canvas a little. Fog began to appear below and flowers on the plant.
And finally, I apply 2 Alien Skin Exposure 2 filters. It turns out 2 layers on top of the picture:
1. Color Film - Kodak Ektachrome mid-1970s (blue) (lower contrast slightly, Opacity 20%);
2. Color Film - Fuji Provia 100F (Opacity 20%);
On each layer I erase too dark or overexposed areas.

8. About blending modes and clipping mask
We have come to the stage where we want to edit our work. But how? Let's figure it out. Photoshop has such a thing as blend modes. The blend mode button is right above the layers and defaults to "Normal". To open a window, you need to click on it with the left mouse button and select any mode by the same LMB click. In addition, there is such a thing in Photoshop as a clipping mask. It is called by right-clicking on the layer (In order not to accidentally turn part of the picture into a clipping mask, create a new layer and right-click on it). What does a clipping mask give us? In fact, this is an analogue of the "Attach layer", which SAI users are probably familiar with. The clipping mask limits the drawing area from the entire sheet to the one drawn on the previous layer. If you create a clipping mask above another clipping mask, they will affect the layer the first mask is attached to. That is, if we draw with an example of our portrait, then the mask will only affect the last layer, where we finalized the drawing. It doesn't work out well. However, without using masks, we will paint over all the layers below. Oh! We covered the background!
9. Color highlights with blend modes
To emphasize special places in the picture, to show light or just to overlay a gradient on top for "pretty" we can use the same blending modes. In the picture, I marked the places where the light can fall. Create a new layer with the value "Soft light". Using the brush tool, paint White color to designated places. Let for example I used a five-minute sketch, but even from it you can see that there is a certain feeling of volume and atmosphere.
10. Gradient and Blending Modes
Create a new layer with the value "Soft light". To use the gradient, you must select the button that is under the "Eraser" and draw a straight line on the picture. There are different types of gradients, but for now we'll only look at the default. If you did not select a gradient from the menu that automatically appears in the second upper panel and opens by clicking on the arrow, then the gradient will correspond to the colors of your palette. If your first color is pink and the other is blue, then your gradient will be pink-blue. The gradient can be only one, gradually dissolving, color. To change the structure and color of the gradient (for example, if you still chose a swatch from the menu), open the same menu of gradient swatches. The first two gradients correspond to the colors in your palette. The first is two-color, and the second is translucent. Draw a gradient line on the layer with the value "soft light". It seems that our drawing has become a little warmer =)
11. A little about curves
Hm. Let's draw a bunny. At some point, you decided that it turned out too pale. Don't worry, it can be fixed. In my case, the "Correction" window is located above the "Layers" window. If you do not have this window, left-click on the "Window" item in the very top panel and select the "Correction" item. You can choose any icon on the panel and experiment. For example, I'll take "Curves". Let's put a random value of our two points and our bunny will become much brighter! You can take more than two points on the curve, although you generally only need these two.

And now, when our image is almost ready, we can edit the color to give the picture atmosphere, lightness, etc. and so on. Playing with brightness and contrast. Today I will talk about the tools of the group. There are four in total.
- Brush. Simulates painting with a real brush. You can change its size, color, shape.
- Pencil. Perhaps the most understandable instrument of the group, because the pencil in real life Everyone has definitely used it. If the contours of the lines drawn with a brush are blurred, then the pencil lines have clearly defined edges.
- Color replacement. Recolors already drawn objects. Thanks to it, you can easily change the color of an element already in the picture.
- Mix brush. New Tool, which also simulates a brush, but with it you can mix colors on the canvas and on the brush itself, set the moisture content of the paint, etc.
Now let's take a closer look. Create a new Photoshop document with a white background and experiment with the tools: painting is rewarding, fun and won't hurt anyone. To display the tools, double-click on the icon with the left mouse button or once with the right mouse button.
Brush
If you have ever painted with a brush (and you did paint), then you do not need to explain the meaning of the tool. After activating it, you will be able to draw by holding the mouse button over the canvas.
Take a look at the options bar: all the settings for the brush, like any other tool, are there.
Clicking on the icon will access the brush settings. Here you can choose a brush from a ready-made set or create your own template. You can set the shape, size, hardness and angle of the tool.
But you can fully enjoy the settings by executing the command Window -> Brush of the main Photoshop menu.
In the left part of the window there are checkbox tabs that allow you to configure, enable and disable certain properties of the brush.
- Brush print shape. The tab that is open by default, on which the parameters we have already considered are located.
- form dynamics. Using the elements of this tab, you can configure how the brush properties will change directly during the drawing process.
- Drawing. The scatter slider allows you to change the density and width of the generated lines. The counter sets the number of scattered elements - the larger the value, the thicker the brush draws. The fluctuations of the counter allow the elements to spray unevenly. If you select the Both axes checkbox, then the paint will also be sprayed horizontally.
- Texture. Here you can select a picture pattern and customize it. In particular, set the brightness, contrast and depth of colors.
- You can add another brush to the main brush, the settings of which are set on this tab.
- Color change over time settings: Hue, Saturation, Brightness, Purity.
- Allows you to set dynamic changes in saturation and transparency.
- The settings determine how the virtual hand holds the hand. In particular, you can set the appropriate tilt angle, rotation and pressure.
- Noise. This is the checkbox by which you will add noise to the brush trail.
- Adds paint to the edges of the brush print, creating the effect of watercolor painting. The tool does not have a settings window.
- Overlay. Checking the box creates the effect of splashing paint from a spray can. The longer you hold down the mouse button, the stronger the effect.
- Smoothing. The checkbox is checked by default. Remove it if you want the outlines of the drawn lines to become clearer and sharper.
- Texture protection. Check this box if you want the default texture of the selected brush to not override the one you set.
These settings should be enough literally "for all occasions." Experiment to understand their practical application.
Pencil
With this tool selected, you can create sharp, crisp, thin lines as if you were painting with an ordinary pencil. The tool parameters are the same as the brush parameters, even the settings window will be the same (Window -> Brush).
On the options panel, in addition to the icon that opens the template set window, there are several more elements.
Color replacement
The tool allows you to recolor already created objects, and the abundance of settings makes it possible to do this with the highest quality, while maintaining textures. You can change the values either on the options panel or in the window, which is opened by the command of the main menu of the program Image -> Correction -> Replace Color.
Mix brush
This tool differs from the already considered regular brush in that it allows you to mix the color of the brush with the color already in the picture, achieving a finer processing of the image. The settings are almost identical to the parameters of a regular brush, and we have already talked about it.
