Encaustic. wax painting

06.03.2019

This art involves the creation of paintings using molten wax of various colors. Such works are still found in excavations. Ancient Greece. Early Christian paintings still retain their bright colors.

All you need to work is:

  • paper;
  • iron;
  • wax pencil.
You need to take wax of a certain color or even use several shades at once and apply them to a warm iron. Left to hold this warmed up metal tool on paper, placing the base flat or edgewise. Now let's talk about this in more detail.

Wax painting: necessary equipment and materials for encaustics

Anything can be depicted. If you are an aspiring artist, then you will be able to do abstract paintings. If you have experience in creating canvases, then you can depict clear landscapes.

The main material that is required in the work is artistic wax with colored pigments. It is sold in specialized art stores. If it is not possible to purchase such wax, then use crayons for drawing and wax pencils. They can be purchased at the stationery store.

You will also need:

  • glossy thick cardboard;
  • soft cloth for polishing;
  • lining on the desktop so that it remains clean during work.
If you have the funds and decide to get serious about this art form, then buy a special encaustic iron.

If this is not possible, then use an ordinary household iron, but it should be small in size, have a sole without holes and a temperature controller.

You will need toilet paper and napkins or a rag, with these materials you need to clean the sole of the iron in order to change the color of the wax to a new one.

If you have a hair dryer that can adjust the temperature, then you can use it. Then use wax pencils as materials.

If encaustics becomes your permanent hobby or even a source of income, then you will need to buy a special heating rod called causaria. It will help to depict small details and ornate patterns.

Encaustic for beginners

For those who have just decided to master this interesting technique, it will be useful to know what tricks you can use when working, these are:

  • smoothing;
  • edge work;
  • impression;
  • nose work.
Smoothing is the main technique used in this technique. To use it, turn the iron over so that its heating surface is on top. Put the wax in here, adjust the temperature so it melts but doesn't run.

When the material acquires such a consistency, it will be necessary to run the iron over the surface of the paper, but without pressing hard on it so as not to burn it. A trace of the desired shape should remain on the sheet.

Working with an edge allows you to create various stripes. This technique is used to draw grass, flowers. First you need to proceed in the same way as in the case when you applied the impression in the smoothing technique. Now put an iron on this drawing with an edge to get a strip desired length. Remove excess wax with a soft cloth.

In order to make veins in the drawing using the encaustic technique, you need to apply paint to the paper base, and then put the sole of the iron on it for a few seconds. At the same time, it should lie like a glove, they should not fidget.

To create fine details of the picture, you need to dip the tip of the iron in melted wax, and then attach it to the canvas in the right place.

Encaustic - master class with photo

Now that you have learned the basics of this art, it's time to move on to practical lesson. It will be easy for beginners.

Take:
  • wax pencils;
  • white sheet of thick cardboard;
  • glue;
  • hair dryer with adjustable temperature.

Pencils should be the same size, if any of them are longer, cut them from the side opposite the rod to equalize with others.

Spread the upper part of the sheet with glue, attach the wax blanks here tightly to each other with the tip down. When the glue dries, bring the hair dryer to the tips of the wax pencils, turning it on at the strongest power. In this case, the workpieces will begin to melt, and the wax will gradually flow down.

If you need strict vertical lines, then hold the sheet of cardboard in the usual position. If you want to achieve interesting special effects, then rotate it from side to side.

If you are satisfied with the result, then put the work on a horizontal surface and wait for your masterpiece to harden.

Such an art object will decorate a home or become an unusual gift on New Year or for another holiday.

The next master class will allow you to create a beautiful abstract painting.

To implement the plan, you will need:

  • thick paper;
  • a small iron without holes on the sole;
  • wax pencils;
  • paper that can be lined work surface.
Set the iron to nylon and heat it up. Turn this tool upside down and place wax crayons on top. Wait for them to start melting.

Now bring the iron to the paper sheet and start moving it horizontally in one direction and the other. Try to keep the colored stripes as little as possible to intersect each other and mix with each other.

As you understand, the principle of smoothing was applied. Now you need to use the print method. To do this, press the iron against the surface to leave uneven prints on it. You can make a few more prints on each to achieve an interesting effect.

Wait for the encaustic painting to cool slightly and after about a minute polish its surface with a soft cloth.

Inexperienced viewers are unlikely to understand what you have made of this work beautiful and very effective. After you practice on simple patterns, you can move on to more complex ones.

Encaustic - a master class for experienced

If you have everything necessary tools, then the work should not seem too complicated even for craftsmen with little experience. Here's what you'll need:

  • hob;
  • iron;
  • paper;
  • foam rubber;
  • textile.
First, secure the sheet to the hob with masking tape.

To draw a landscape, take a wax crayon or pencil of blue color and start shading it at the top of the sheet. Since the cardboard base will be heated, this will not be difficult to do.

Mountains are drawn next. To do this, put the chalk Brown on the soleplate of the iron, turn the tool over, heat it.

Then place the flat iron on the surface of the sheet, depict the peaks and the mountain system, using some encaustic techniques.

If you need to shade the paint, use a piece of cloth or a sponge for this. To make mountains surrounded by greenery, depict it with a chalk of this color. Draw other elements of the picture, after which you can frame it.

Wax painting technique on paper

Encaustic technique allows you to get very beautiful landscapes. You will be convinced of this now. See what wonderful paintings the craftswomen create.

For work you will need:
  • an iron for encaustics or a regular travel iron of a small size without holes;
  • glossy cardboard, thick photo paper for printers on which photographs are printed is suitable;
  • colored crayons;
  • napkins;
  • soft cloth.
First you need to heat the iron, but not too much. Turn it over and put crayons on the sole of this device desired color.

When they become soft, you can use them, but without waiting until the wax begins to flow down from the surface of the iron.

Apply melted wax to glossy cardboard, swipe from left to right. At the same time, make a small semicircle with an iron.

Carefully, so as not to burn yourself, wipe off the wax from the surface of the iron with napkins and put crayons of a different color here. When they melt, place the iron on the right side of the sheet and swipe to the left, then to reverse side and again to the left.

Now you need to remove this wax from the iron with a napkin and melt brown on it. Make the so-called otlips with the prepared solution. In this case, you need to apply the iron to the paper and quickly lift it. They do this several times.

It remains to mark the small details. For this, the methods listed above are used. Run the edge and then the tip of the iron over the drawing to depict a bush.

Look how beautiful it turned out. Since the picture is made with wax paints, it will sparkle charmingly.

The encaustic technique is also good because you can come up with a plot for a picture right on the go. By making several movements with the iron, placing the wax in a random order, you may find that you have painted something that was not intended before.

The craftswoman from the next master class depicted the bird in this way on her masterpiece. But first things first.

First she took:

  • heat-resistant glossy cardboard;
  • German and Russian wax crayons;
  • iron;
  • towel;
  • napkin.
In order not to get dirty workplace, you need to lay a towel on it first, and a napkin on top.

Now you need to put white and blue crayons on a warm iron, start drawing with them.

Turn a sheet of cardboard and cover it with wax using an iron on the other side. Now you need to draw clouds with the edges of the iron.

If necessary, occasionally wipe the sole of your instrument with a tissue. But if you use the same colors, then you don't have to.

Looking closer, the craftswoman saw that a bird appeared on the canvas, however, a little strange. It was decided to finish her feathers with the tip of an iron.

You can make adjustments using a toothpick or a pointed wooden skewer. With it, you remove the excess, draw something, clean something.

Now you need to make prints to depict grass, bushes. To do this, put green and brown chalk on the iron, apply them to the desired part of the picture.

Tree crowns are depicted as follows. Put a little brown or green wax on the tip of the iron and draw this detail of the picture with this part of the tool.

Using the impression technique, draw leaves on the trunk and branches, and apply adjustments with a skewer.

The heroine did not like the first bird, so she painted a tree crown in this place. But then I decided to draw a seagull white color. To do this, you need to scratch the outline of the bird with a tip. wooden stick. Dip it in melted wax and paint on the details.

It remains to polish the masterpiece with a soft cloth and you can hang a picture or give it as a gift for any holiday.

How to draw with an iron - technique for beginners

The next master class will allow you to create a picture in red and yellow tones with dark patches.

Even those who think they can't draw can draw it. To do this, they only need:
  • A5 glossy cardboard;
  • wax children's crayons;
  • iron without holes on the sole with a thermostat, which is designed for dry ironing.

The temperature of the iron should be as low as possible, so set the thermostat to the wool or silk ironing position. Arrange the crayons on the sole of this tool so that the yellow is at the bottom, the orange is below it, the red is even lower, then comes the dark pink and burgundy.

Paint the bright sky with this colored rainbow using the smoothing technique. To do this, simply move the iron over the surface of the paper as if you were ironing from right to left and vice versa.

Wipe off excess wax on the warm surface of the iron with a napkin and place crayons of a different color here. Which can be seen in the next photo.

You also need to iron the sheet horizontally with back and forth movements. This way you will make the main background.

To draw with an iron further, you need to dissolve the black chalk on its tip. Use this part of the working surface of the iron, making an impression on paper with its tip.

Next, using this technique, make prints at the bottom of the sheet and create fabulous vegetation.

To wax further, use the sides of the iron. Place it on edge against the applied background to make vertical lines, such as grass.

After you have made an impression with black wax, you will have a certain pattern left on the tip of the iron. Do not wipe off this coating, make prints further, you will get an effective result.

Such an encaustic is also suitable for beginners, as it does not require special skills.

Now draw with the tip of the iron, for this you need to pick up a little wax with the nose of the iron and drive it in the drawing, creating black flowers and leaves here.

See how to wax birds. To do this, put a dot on the desired part of the picture with the tip of the iron. Then with ribs draw two wings for each bird.

The final chord is polishing the image with a soft cloth. It will turn out radiant and brilliant.

When you practice on such works, you will be able to create masterpieces with smaller features in this technique.

To reproduce such an apricot blossom or sakura branch, take:
  • black cardboard;
  • white marker;
  • wax crayons;
  • iron;
  • soft cloth.
First, draw on dark cardboard with a white marker the outline of the future flower.

Hold the iron in right hand, and in the left take a green crayon. Place the tip against the iron so that the wax melts slightly.

If you are better with your left hand, then hold the tool and crayon in the way that is convenient for you.

Start filling one half of the sheet first, moving the iron up and down. Do not tear it off the cardboard so that you get a continuous layer. Now fill in the second half of the sheet in the same way.

Take a pink chalk, melt it on the tip of an iron and start recreating a pink petal.

In the same way, complete all the elements of the flower. Those petals that are closer to the viewer need to be filled in last to create volume.

Apply brown paint to the tip of the iron and make a twig. Form stamens from yellow and brown.

To make the flower look more realistic, you need to lightly scratch with a special tool from the core to the beginning of the petals. To do this, you can use a pointed wooden stick.

With the same tool, you can scratch the wax where it is not needed to make the contours of the petals and flowers more even.

If the elements of the picture are already frozen, you can put the canvas on a heating surface so that the wax softens slightly and removes excess or draw veins on the sheets. After the final polishing of the painting with a soft cloth, you can proudly admire the result of the work.

Yes, if you try, then the iron will become a tool of a talented artist.

The presented works are more capable of adults, and even warm irons should not be given to small children for work. Therefore, get acquainted with the variety of this technique, which kids are happy to do.

Encaustic technique for children

Invite the children to do encaustic in the style of pointillism. The following master class will help you master this needlework yourself and teach it to children.

Draw on a sheet of paper with a simple pencil outlines of the future masterpiece. For example, this is a rooster.

So that you can draw it, we suggest attaching a sheet of paper to the template presented and simply redrawing it.

Since encaustics still involves heating the wax, so be with your child during class. Place the candle in a suitable container, light it. Have the child hold the crayon over the candle flame until a drop forms. After that, it must be quickly transferred to a certain area of the picture.

The work requires patience, accuracy, but the result will be amazing. Such three-dimensional picture will be the pride of parents for their child.

If the children are very young, then you do not need to show them the method of creating a picture with a burning candle, but rather teach them how to create masterpieces using the pointillism technique using the cold method that is safe for them.

Winter drawings will come in handy now. To make them, give the children:

Let the children dip cotton swabs in white paint and create from it falling snow, stars. The tree in the center of the composition can also be made in light colors to be seen - it's winter.

Adults or older children can use white wax crayons and heat them up to create works, thus mastering the art of encaustics.

To consolidate the material studied, watch the video that will help beginners and older children to master drawing with hot wax even better.

If you have already practiced enough, then try to create scenic landscape along with the author of the next video.

And today, on the advice of our Lyudochka Martynova ( Thanks a lot, dear!) I will tell you about the drawing technique, which in Lately became popular with our and foreign craftswomen - encaustic!
(If you have any ideas for a little bit of everything or finished material for her - write to us!)

In the list of women's hobbies, this very encaustic takes pride of place - a kind of painting that was used in ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece.

Encaustic (from other Greek - burning) is a painting technique in which binder paints is wax. Painting is done with melted paints.

What is it and where did it come from?

The history of encaustics or the art of waxing, as we have already said, has its roots in hoary antiquity. The first works of art created in this way date back to the era ancient rome, but the technology of drawing with hot wax for a long time remained a secret behind seven seals. A variety of encaustic is wax tempera, which is distinguished by its brightness and richness of colors. Many early Christian icons were painted in this technique.

The first samples of encaustics were discovered in Egypt, in the Fayum oasis (“Fayum portraits”). These were posthumous picturesque images of the deceased. In the future, the Greeks used the encaustic technique to create early icons. The most striking iconographic example of the encaustic technique is the image of Christ Pantokrator (VI century), located in the Sinai Monastery (lower left).

The first attempts to revive ancient art were done in the middle XVIII century, and the third wave of encaustic popularity came in the middle of the 20th century. However, she is not very widely known in creative circles.

In ancient times, people took colored wax and polished wooden planks as a basis. Today everything is much easier. As a canvas, ordinary glossy cardboard is used, and instead of colored wax, wax pencils (or crayons), which can be easily purchased at an office supply store, are perfect.

As for the brush itself, here, no matter how paradoxical it may sound, you will need an iron. Yes, the most common iron with a smooth sole. Such a tool is now available in the bins of every hostess. Of course for modern technology encaustics have already invented a special professional iron, but it is quite expensive, and it is not so easy to get it.

By the way, today this art is so popular that special kits are even sold in stores for creating encaustic paintings at home.

What is the drawing technique?

At first glance, painting a picture with an iron may seem like a strange and impossible task. However, in fact, everything is much simpler and no more complicated than ordinary drawing.

The iron in the encaustic painting technique acts as a brush. It must be heated to the melting point of the wax. It is not difficult to determine this, just take a pencil and touch it to the sole of the iron. The chalk should flow smoothly over the hot surface. Do not allow "boiling wax". As soon as the temperature regime is set, you can safely take on the creation of a masterpiece.

On the heated sole of the iron, wax of the desired color is melted and applied to glossy cardboard with light movements. You can apply several colors of wax crayons on the sole of the iron, they do not mix, but very interesting transitions are obtained. The wax is transferred to the cardboard by stroking or applying movements. Small parts draw with the tip of the iron, and the veins are created by imprinting (the iron is applied to the cardboard and lifted). Grass, bushes, trees are drawn with the edge of an iron.

Mastering the secrets of encaustics is quite simple, it is not at all necessary to be an artist, and the beauty of this activity lies in the fact that you can create both alone and with your child. And age special significance does not have. So, for example, if the baby is 2 or 4 years old, then he can search for and give a pencil of the desired color. Thus, the mother will calmly draw, and her baby will study colors and shades. If the child is already older, then he can safely be connected directly to the process, having previously explained all the safety rules (after all, the iron is hot).

The attraction of encaustics.

Encaustic drawing technique has many positive aspects. First of all, this is a great way to calm down, a kind of antidepressant, however, like any other needlework. Drawing will help you get distracted and leave all your experiences on cardboard.

Second positive side this wonderful craze is the availability of materials. Glossy cardboard and wax crayons do not need to spend a lot of money, but you can buy them at the nearest stationery store. You don’t need to buy a special iron; old-fashioned Soviet-made equipment will do just fine. If this is not the case, then you can purchase a small road-type iron. Here it is fundamentally important that the sole is smooth, that is, without the steaming function.

The third advantage of encaustics is cleanliness and order. After it, you do not need to wipe the paint off the walls and floor, you do not need to run to the bath and wash your hands. Wax does not splash around, does not spoil the manicure, and even if a drop falls on the surface of the table, it will quickly cool down, turn into a solid state, and it can be easily removed like a mote.

And another plus for an exciting hobby. It doesn't take long to create a masterpiece. One painting will take only 10 to 30 minutes. In addition, your hobby can be turned into an additional source of income, so to speak, to combine business with pleasure. Why not?

13 But I

What is encaustic?

List of lessons:

Far from new and not quite familiar, but this wonderful hobby called encaustic - wax painting technique. Painting, where multi-colored melted wax is used instead of paints.

A bit of history

Many ancient Christian icons were depicted in this type of painting. The earliest specimens were found in the Fayum oasis of Egypt (hence the Fayum portraits). On the found samples were afterlife images of the dead.

Further, the Greeks began to use this painting technique to create the first icons. The most colorful iconographic painting of encaustics is the image of Christ Pantocrator in the VI century, located in the Sinai monastery.

WITH mid-nineteenth century there were attempts to restore the encaustic.

In the middle of the 20th century, Moscow artists V.V. and T.V. Khvostenko.

What is the originality of the work

Paintings created with wax can be preserved for a long period of time, without losing all the picturesque characteristics. The fact is that the wax is quite durable to the effects of the surrounding climate. It is considered the most reliable material for art. The evidence is paintings over a thousand years old, which have survived to the present day.

Encaustic fascination feature adds uniqueness end result, because it is difficult to guess. And this, if you do not create an abstract picture. But the still life - how the wax will behave, what surprises from mixing and combining will be - it is not possible to assume.

Drawing skill

The image of a drawing involving an iron seems to be a very unusual and impossible task. However, everything is simple, almost like elementary drawing. The iron in this special technique of painting images is a brush.

Currently, a special encaustic iron has been created, but it is both difficult and expensive to buy it.

Before starting work, the iron must be heated to the melting temperature of the wax. To check the temperature, you need to touch the surface of the iron with a wax pencil: if it spreads smoothly, then the iron is ready.

Wax must not be allowed to boil.

When the iron is ready to work, they begin to create a masterpiece. Wax of the desired color is melted on the iron and applied with gentle, gentle touches to glossy cardboard.

Learning the tricks of this painting is easy, and it is not necessary to be a painter.

The whole highlight of needlework is that you can create a masterpiece both alone and together with your child, having told him in advance about the rules for handling a hot iron.

What is the temptation

This type of needlework has many positive aspects:

1. Great way to relax. In order not to lose heart from the monotony of everyday life, it is possible to distract yourself with encaustics, and all negative emotions transfer to cardboard.

2. The materials for this art are in the public domain. Glossy cardboard and wax crayons are inexpensive and can be purchased at any stationery.

3.You can do without a special ironing. A common Soviet iron with a smooth sole will do (this is fundamentally important). Even a travel iron will do.

4. Cleanliness and tidiness. You don’t have to wipe the paint off the floor, you don’t need to wash your hands either. Wax in different sides does not splatter, manicure does not deteriorate.

5. It takes 10-30 minutes to create a painting. Thanks to this beautiful plain sight creativity, everyone can show their individual vision and skill. This unique technique gives you the opportunity to be creative and experiment. Having mastered the art of drawing unusual method, you can decorate your home, make original gifts.

Passion for encaustic from a hobby can easily turn into small business. Everyone knows that handmade work is very valuable. Thus, it will be possible to combine business with pleasure.

Non-traditional drawing technique. Encaustic

Master class with step by step photo. Encaustic drawing.

Stages of work:
To work, it is necessary to prepare a working surface for cardboard so as not to stain the necessary material around with melted wax. We lay the material in two layers, then newspapers, and put cardboard on the newspapers.

We set the temperature regulator to "silk" or "wool". There are irons with dots. We put between one and two dots.

In encaustic, there are five basic methods of working with an iron.
The first step is smoothing.
We apply a certain color to the sole of the iron with wax crayon

We iron the cardboard from one side of the edge to the other without stopping. Draw the sky.

We wipe the remnants of crayons from the sole of the iron with paper towels.

Apply wax crayons to the sole of the iron again

We iron the bottom of the cardboard. Draw the ground.

The main background of the work turned out. We change the substrate from newspapers to a clean one.

The second method of drawing is a print.
We apply the iron to work, and then sharply lift it up. We got streaks.

The print can be done as follows: on the tip of the iron, melt the wax crayon of the desired color. Then we apply the iron to work and lift it sharply - it turns out a bush.

Third reception - work iron edge.
We put the iron with an edge to work with the finished background and lead it up. This is how white
lines (grass, bushes)

In this photo, the techniques of imprinting with the tip of the iron and the edge are clearly visible.

Fourth reception - drawing spout iron
With this technique, you can draw small details (flowers, birds)

We put a dot on the nose of the iron with a wax crayon and transfer it to the drawing. From the dot we draw a check mark - a bird.

The fifth technique is drawing with the sole up.
We put work on top of the iron, when the cardboard heats up, you can draw details wax crayons.

The photo clearly shows this drawing technique (dark flowers in the distance, yellow flowers, in the upper right corner - a bird)

We rub the finished drawing with a soft cloth or paper towel until it shines.
The picture will become bright.

Work is ready!!!

Thank you for your attention!

encaustic

(from Greek enkáiō - I burn), technique wax painting. The binder for colorful pigments is wax. Wax paints have been known since Ancient Egypt, but encaustic painting was widely used and developed in Greco-Roman art, especially from the 5th century BC. BC e. Most famous works made in this technique are Fayum portraits.

Melted paints were applied to the board with a brush or a caestrum - a metal rod with a spatula at the end. The wax hardened quickly, forming an uneven surface, which intensified the impression of three-dimensionality of the image. Sometimes, when depicting eyelashes or to deepen the shadow, deep grooves were made with the edge of the caestrum. Encaustic works are characterized by a special texture of writing. In some Fayum portraits, the scrupulous elaboration of the face is combined with a broader pictorial manner in the transfer of clothing, written in more liquid strokes. The authors of other works resorted to melting paints to create a smooth, like a varnished surface (a brazier with hot coals was kept at some distance from the portrait, from which the paints warmed up and fused into a single mass).
The Hellenistic encaustic technique was also used in early examples icon painting, later giving way to tempera painting.
